Double Knitting: Two color ribbing
Double Knitting is a way to knit two back to back pieces of fabric at the same time with two different colors. It's a fun way to add extra warmth to your knitted piece and provide a unique two color pattern. In this video I will show you how to do double knitting in a ribbing pattern with circular needles. The double knitting ribbing makes a great cuff or band for a two color double knitted hat. It's simple to do and I provide step by step easy to remember instructions.

    I love this pattern and the beautiful edges. I also watched your other video on creating beautiful edges. I have followed along with your video and instructions at least 10 times and have to keep starting over, because I keep getting an extra stitch at the end of the right row. I can't figure out what I am doing wrong. I believe I am following along exactly, except your video cuts off before ending your right side row... I end up with an extra stitch... brioche stitch then two single stitches at the end. Then when starting the wrong side, I have three single stitches before the first brioche. Is it something obvious that I am doing wrong?

    • @jacqknits
      @jacqknits 19 ชั่วโมงที่ผ่านมา

      Thanks for reaching out. I'm sorry you having trouble here. I just did a swatch of this stitch to confirm that my instructions are correct in the video. Here are a couple things you can look out for to ensure you are ending up with the correct number of stitches: 1. Be sure you are casting on an even number of stitches. When you count your stitches after knitting a row, count the brioche stitch as one stitch. 2. The start of each row should alway be two single stitches followed by the brioche stitch, and the end of your rows should always be one single stitch proceeded by the brioche stitch. 3. Be sure you are remembering to do your yarn over stitches throughout your stitch pattern. Especially don't forget the first yarn over. It is the 2nd stitch you are doing to start each row. It's an easy one to forget. The first stitch is a knit stitch for the right side row or a purl stitch for a wrong side row. Then the first step of your stitch sequence is a yarn over. 4. Verify that you are doing your yarn overs and your slip stitches correctly as to which direction you are doing the yarn overs and where your yarn is when doing the slip stitches. Yarn overs should have you wrapping the yarn over the top of your needle, not from underneath. 5. It appears that somehow you are creating an extra single stitch at the beginning of your wrong side row. Double check that your first few stitches are as follows: P1, YO, Sl1, BRK1. Look back then at what you just completed. It should be a single stitch, a brioche stitch and a single stitch. Then continue with the YO, Sl1, BRK1 sequence. You should be ending your row with that YO, Sl1, BRK1 sequence and then have one stitch remaining which you will slip. I hope this helps. I was trying to reproduce what you were seeing with your stitch count, but was not seeing it on my end.

    • @Be4givN
      @Be4givN 16 ชั่วโมงที่ผ่านมา

      I figured it out. I was doing an extra YO after the purl at the beginning of the WS because of the way I hold the yarn. Yay! I can start my scarf now!

    Can you also do this without the middle section as well ? Im looking to do a square shaped cardigan and was curious about this stitch

    • @jacqknits
      @jacqknits วันที่ผ่านมา

      Absolutely! By eliminating the middle section you will create a square. So after you complete Section 1 with increases at the start of each row, you will jump right to doing decreases at the start of each row and that will form your square. Great question. Happy knitting!!

    • @jacqknits
      @jacqknits 4 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Yes, I show both ways in this video. The first part I'm showing how to do it one color at a time for those who don't like holding the two colors of yarn and knitting them at the same time. Then about the 16:35 mark in the video I explain how to knit both colors in the same row bringing the yarn to the front and back. So both methods are shown here in this video. I call the first the slow and easy method and the second way the faster, but more difficult method (difficult for beginner knitters).

      It may also be where you are holding your yarn when doing the slip stitch. Be sure your yarn is in front and you are slipping purlwise at the end of the wrong side row and your yarn is in back and you are slipping the stitch knit wise at the end of the right side rows.

    • @jacqknits
      @jacqknits 11 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Its always hard to say exactly how many stitches will work well without doing a trial to see if it fits well. I would suggest for a 3 weight yarn to use a size US 4 or 5 needle. You will want to cast on a number divisible by 12. I would first try casting on 108 stitches to see how that fits. The hat I made is a bit large so you may find that sticking with 96 stitches may be good as well. You can also go up or down in your needle size to make an adjustment. It will also depend a bit on your tension. I hope that gives you a starting point. Feel free to share here what worked for you. Happy knitting. 🧶

    Hi there! Did you make a slipknot in the beginning? Also for the 6 needle are you using the exact size yarn you’d usually need for a 6? Hope that makes sense lol i am a beginner 😂 So excited to try this!! ❤

    • @jacqknits
      @jacqknits 17 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Hello and thanks for the questions. When I cast on I do not start with a slip knot. I find that just creates a bulky knot at the start of your cast on that isn't necessary. Rather the first wrap of the yarn over the needle creates that first stitch. For more instructions on casting on you can refer to my video here: th-cam.com/video/YaP6i22sByE/w-d-xo.html As for the yarn and needle, I'm using a worsted weight yarn (usually identified with a "4" on the package for this weight of yarn). You would normally use about a size 7 or 8 needle for that weight but because I want the mitten to be a bit more dense and warmer for when complete I went down a couple needle sizes to a size 6. That makes for a tighter knitted mitten and give it a bit more warmth. Hope that answers your questions. Have fun.

      Thank you. Yes the magic loop is a great way to knit in the round without needing the exact size circular needle. I also have a couple videos on the magic loop. I do a lot of knitting with both the magic loop and DPNs. Happy knitting!!

    Is it absolutely necessary to add two stitches to your row? I'm doing a baby blanket that has 10 stitches of garter stitch at the beginning and end of the row.

    • @jacqknits
      @jacqknits 21 วันที่ผ่านมา

      No you don’t have to add the two stitches. Just use the first and last stitch of your garter stitch in each row for these salvage stitches.

      Hello. Thank you. I do not have my own pattern for newborn size. But I did a quick search on Raverly and found this pretty popular pattern if you want to check it out. www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/perfect-newborn-socks

      Whenever you see an instruction followed by additional numbers in parentheses ... those numbers in the parenthesis indicates what you would do for the other sizes that this pattern includes. I talk about this sizing instruction in my video at about the 5 minute mark. But in your example the instructions read that you would Purl 2 for the smallest size but you would purl for 3 stitches for the next size, and 5 stiches for the next two size. You may want to watch that section of the video for a more full explanation on how to read the instructions for multiple sizes. I hope that helps.

    Thanks so much for this video! I have come across a pattern that directs to use only 3 dpns total. The stitches are suppose to be divided on only 2 dpns and then use the third to do the knitting. I have tried this and cannot figure out how to do it. Do you have any suggestions? Any suggestions/advice appreciated!

    • @jacqknits
      @jacqknits หลายเดือนก่อน

      I have not heard of that. What is the pattern making? I agree that would be a bit difficult to do. I did find this video that talks a bit about this method. Maybe this may help? th-cam.com/video/jh5QEl9lUv0/w-d-xo.htmlsi=5l3ScvUHT3NZGi25

      @@jacqknits Thanks for the reply and the video! It is for a pattern for fingerless gloves with finger weight yarn so there are a lot of stitches. According to the video, only 3 needles total is for when one has a small number of stitches so it is not clear to me why the author of the pattern would want to only use 2 needles. I may try and adapt it for four needles if the pattern doesn't become too hard to make it work. Thanks, again!

    • @jacqknits
      @jacqknits หลายเดือนก่อน

      that would be what I would do. Try it with 4 needles. I don’t see a reason why it would be necessary to use only 3.

    For that staggered pattern you simply start that round with the last two stitches of the pattern repeat instead of the first two. It's similar to shifting the beginning of a round really 🤷🏽‍♀️ Hope that helps.
