Hi abbey! Could you do a video discussing growing up in a household that fosters disordered eating and how to cope/create a safe place for your own kids?

I've been following Autumn for a few months and I really enjoy her and her content. She often says in her videos that you need to do what works for you. I am focusing on macro tracking right now and seeing great results after a year-long weight plateau. I am experimenting with intermittent fasting, which is how I found Autumn because my body seemed to be doing this naturally. The higher amounts of protein I am eating keep me satiated and I am not waking up feeling hungry and I am less hungry in between meals. She also says that you have to find balance in your eating and that restricting yourself to your IF eating windows could leave you missing out on social activities, traditions, etc, but she says to do what YOU want. I don't follow IF every day but I do when I can.

younger women who havent gone through menopause need to do a shorter fast and alternate days so thats perfect and im in a similar boat! expiramented with my macros for a few months and found something that works, i also did a bit of a reverse diet i bumped up 50 calories a week for 2 mo going from arpund 1600 to close to 1780 and that honestly jump started my weight loss again i just stayed in my same macros :)

Agreed. I've been following Autumn for over a year, and she definitely does not approach IF or nutrition from a "one size fits all" approach. She encourages people to consult their doctors when necessary, and she nearly always says that everybody is different and will have their own unique dietary or fasting needs. I LOVE the knowledge that she shares, and I really appreciate when she points out that certain ingredients may not be great for people with insulin resistance or who are sensitive to carbs. I think her approach isn't for everybody, but for people who are serious about getting their daily nutritional and protein needs, avoiding unnecessary insulin spikes, and staying satiated, she is amazing!

Autumn helped me understand that I can get healthy and it doesn't have to be complicated. I was sick and unhealthy, I needed to make a change. I struggled trying to do diets and always failed, but she taught me how to make a lifestyle change without being scared to eat delicious foods. I lost 10lbs within the first 2 weeks off her free content. Side note: I'm not intermittent fasting. I appreciate that she's there trying to help educate.

When I was a teenager with an ED which revolved around ‘clean eating’ and low carb, the only way I can describe the feeling her videos give me is frazzled. I remember watching a million videos that gave laundry lists of what is okay to eat and what isn’t. How many calories is too many, are carbs okay? It totally deflated me. Health shouldn’t be this complicated.

Love Autumn. She is the 1st person I’ve seen effectively explain satiety hormones. Game changer for me. Also 1st time in my adult life I haven’t been plagued by symptoms of hypoglycemia! Turns out eating 6 carbohydrate packed meals/snacks actually make it worse, not better, even with whole grains & protein. And yes, those puréed bananas do spike insulin.
Btw-I’m not diabetic anymore, either. No meds either. Not all off her content, but her explanation of insulin & hunger hormones (in free content) was key. People who eat ample fats& protein don’t have nearly as much of a problem with carb restriction. Try it

I was literally obsessed with reading labels and minimising carb intake, but because I was eating so much fat that my body wasn’t used to, my cal intake was at a surplus anyway. Thank you for calling this out, because I think it’s so important we stop demonising carbs.

I did 18-6 IF for about 8 month and I focused only on sugar and carbs… after about 8 months it stopped working and I started to gain weight. Autumn was a godsend to me. Her recipes and advice about protein and fiber helped stop the weight gain and made me feel sooo much better. It took a while, but the scale is starting to move down again, although much slower now. But I feel so good, I’m okay with it.
The good: great recipes, protein fiber emphasis and her advice on how to reduce sugar in your diet. My sugar cravings, that started to come back when IF/Keto stopped working, are gone. Her emphasis on having and maintaining muscle is also great.
The bad (actually not bad, just not helpful for me): she seems to emphasize gut health and bloating a lot… not an issue for most people. She emphasizes not getting enough salt… again, not an issue for most people. And while her recipes are great… they do NOT fill me up for 3-4 hours like she suggests (maybe because I’m not skinny little Autumn), so I do find my self adding a few chunks of frozen banana or extra pineapple in her smoothies, and I do grab a snack of eggs or cashews now and then.
Overall, she has solid advice, great recipes, and her plans are easy to follow by comparison to other plans I’ve seen. I like her protein powder to. But if you’ve struggled with EDs, I wouldn’t recommend Autumn… I can see how her high energy, fast talking and little rules could trigger obsessive tendencies in some people.

I find that with ED, it's highly individual and even depends on where you are in your struggles. As someone who struggles with disordered eating, I actually find her plan very beneficial for me. I NEED the structure a stricter plan offers. It's so easy for me to rationalize a little of this and a little of that. The slope is very slippery for me. I am in a place currently where one "treat" involving carbs and/or sugar will derail me for weeks. Once I've been clean for quite some time I have an easier time bouncing back. Just, not right now.

I'm also an RD and I've been skeptical about the whole IF/low carb thing so I decided to wear a CGM (continuous glucose monitor) for a couple months. I was shocked. Anything I ate with substantial carbs for breakfast sent my glucose soaring. But later in the day, I could handle carbohydrates much better. I think it's from the high cortisol levels in the a.m. so now I do lower carb in the morning and wait to eat them later. I feel more energetic and have less fatigue in the afternoon. Just food for thought!

Interesting! I've noticed that I feel jittery but tired when I eat carbs in the morning. Much better with a high protein/fat snack (like handful of macadamias) and then carbs a little later on. SO MUCH MORE ENERGY! And appetite. I used to not have any appetite in the morning either. But a small protein snack seems like it signals to my body that fuel is coming, so it can ease off the cortisol or adrenaline to pick up the slack.

IF has really helped with my GI issues as well as spacing out meals, but I have to eat breakfast because of medication now and I don’t want to skip dinner because I’ll get hungry before bed, so I had to stop. @@thedeels7522 there is a lot more to the story. Bananas are high in carbs and sugar. If you eat that as a once off every now and then (e.g once a month) it won't do anything to you. However, most people don't stop at just one banana (anyway, buying one banana is weird and impractical right?). People are encouraged to eat lots of fruits in a day, plus wholegrains and legumes. Thats a lot of sugar everyday in the form of carbs. All carbs break down into sugar once its processed by the body. Fruit is nature's candy and should be treated as such. Carbs should be treated with caution. I'm not saying you can't ever have them but insulin resistance is a global issue, and even skinny people can be insulin resistant. For me, regardless of what I do, if my heart rate is up my sensitivity is up. Walking is the biggest thing that effects my sensitivity. In the title it says Autumn Bates does Keto ( *she DOESN'T, and has said that she doesn't, she just avoids a few foods because her body doesn't process them well* ). In the thumbnail it also said "SO MANY RULES" *which is also untrue.* What she talks about aren't hard and fast rules. She doesn't say never eat oatmeal for example, she's saying hey if you're sensitive or have trouble processing carbohydrates, you might want to look into trying something else, and your body might be happier.

I actually followed a bit of autumns plan for a little over a month and I lost some weight. I don't know how much because I don't have a scale but I lost a pants size and everyone noticed. I got up and had keto coffee the way she makes it, work out, (waaaayy less than she does because I'm out of shape literally fifteen minutes of yoga or cardio that's it) then immediately make one of her smoothie recipes but I'm with you on the fruit in the smoothie. I always added more fruit than she did. For dinner I just did random keto recipes didn't like her dinner recipes. I only quit because it was hard to not eat any sugar. But I felt great. She has a video where she talks about "treat meals" instead of "cheat days." And that really helped me stay emotionally satisfied. I didn't go crazy but I would just have some carbs in my treat meals while still keeping it balanced. I loved your perspective though I think it will help me find a balance 🤗 I only worked out once a day for a short amount of time and I ate a bigger dinner than she did. I think intermittent fasting worked for me because the keto coffee and the smoothie both kept me feeling very full and the timing of when I ate thins really helped me avoid snacking

First of all .... no food is off limits with Autumn. Starchy carbs are "suggested" for treat meals not part of your daily consumption. The grass fed suggestion that seems to bug Abbey is also a suggestion because what an animal eats (animal by products) is what you will be consuming. Bread and Pasta sorry to break it to you all is not a necessary food item to survive. You might as well slap the fat to your butts if you are carb sensitive . The oatmeal Autumn again "suggests" you omit for your first meal of the day is for those that are very carb sensitive. I lived on friggin steel oats for breakfast and it got me no where accept a stomach that consistently protruded no matter what I did. I eat a smoothie for breakfast and I dont use grass fed products all the time then no snacking I eat my lunch and then eat my dinner. I do the 14:10 fasting .... I work in the real world and so I break my fast at 8am and last meal before 6pm. I stopped running 2 miles a day on the treadmill beating myself up in bodypump classes and switched to walking through the day ... my cortisol was way out of whack. Not every lifestyle works ... but me going through a very painful menopause nothing was working ... this does. My blood pressure is back in the normal range ... I fit into my clothes better and look like I have a female shape again. Those of you that stopped following .. nothing wrong with that ... I am looking at most of the post and looks like you guys are overthinking IF with carb sensitivity eating .. forget the "Keto" coffee ... Make coffee and use half&half or heavy cream ... no sugars which again she suggests also. There is no reason to stuff your face with these bars Abbey it getting paid to push .. its fake food. There is also no reason to eat bread pasta cake pies ice cream daily except to fill an emotional hole. Here is the short breakdown for Autumn's nutrition .. eat three meals only .... make sure they are satisfying so you dont go looking for something sweet salty etc. Dont eat low fat anything it does not keep you full and you will again go looking for the bad stuff. Drink your water . Pick one day a week to eat something that is not very healthy but you enjoy and eat it without guilt - life is meant to be enjoyed. This is a long post sorry but Abbey seems to cherry pick . Anyone that pushes fake food such as protein candy bars is not looking out for your best interest .. just sayin

Ultimately I didn't hate the program while I was doing it. It wasn't until I got off of it, that I realized I missed carbs SO much and realized the keto coffee could never compare to just plain old milk and coffee. Also, It was also pretty hard to fit into my social life. I mean there's eating methods that are good for everyone. I Intermittent fast and eat a clean ketogenic diet. I have completely turned around and put 3 autoimmune conditions and PCOS into remission.
It's what works for me and it is supported by my neurologist, rheumatologist, and endocrinologist.
I mean I am not so intense as this example ... but the combination has been amazing for my health.

I have been eating similar to Autumn in the past 3 years. I have endometriosis, and keto and IT helped me. I was feeling super unhealthy, my body was not functioning anymore. I lost 20 quilos. Today I feel the healthiest that I have ever experienced. I do not take any medicine. I healed myself with diet and exercises. It makes me feel so free! It is off course super hard to keep this diet, difficult to eat in restaurants. And I eat bananas or carbs during weekends, but not everyday anymore. It worked for me. And it can work for a lot of women that suffers with endometriosis. We live in system that spoils us all the time with their ready food, services, etc. Doing keto and IT made me to regain the responsibility of my life back to my hands. I love your videos. But strict diet do not need to be demonized, as it can mean freedom to some people ;) I just want to share that we can see the same diet from different angles. Best, Clara

I've also been doing IF and following AB's YT channel for advice, tips & general guidance. I have no other underlying conditions, other than being perimenopausal & gaining weight around my belly. I started IF last year in May, in the height of a stressful period where I also developed heartburn. I had read that eating too late might be the cause of my heartburn and in reading more, I started seeing articles about IF and came to YT to get ideas from others. I found Autumn to be rather middle of the road, she encourages flexitarians, vegans and meat eaters alike! I did the bullet coffee for a while but then stopped once I felt I could just have regular coffee and not eat until Noon. Like you said; some people are looking for a bit more structure in their eating & she fit that scope. I've lost most of my belly fat, I still do keto but give myself a few cheat meals every weekend & I continue to lose weight slowly. I'm also much happier & no longer have heartburn! To each his own, I guess ;0)✌🏾

I have been doing IF for several months now and did lost weight and improved my BMI. I was overweight before this. However, unlike August, I ate normal meals with moderate portion size when I break fast. I don't subscribe to low carb diet, as I have tried it before but didn't work. In fact, when I reduced meat intake, it worked. There's just too much denigration of carb and many of the criticisms are not backed by real science.

Autumn seems really nice and knowledgeable, and a lot of her followers have found success! I even bought one of her programs back in 2020. But I was overwhelmed with all the rules, time schedules, having to buy oddly specific ingredients (celtic sea salt??), and just feeling hungry ALL the time. I think this downward spiral into Autumn's keto/intermittent fasting program was my final straw with fad diets. This kicked off my journey into fixing my relationship with food, improving other factors in my life (sleep, exercise, etc), and finally feeling like I was seeing results that weren't just weight loss. So I guess I have something to thank Autumn for?
Also, thank you, Abbey, for all the resources and wisdom you share on this channel. Your content continues to educate me! (The pop tart+Greek yogurt+fruit recipe has been a game-changer!) You are an ACTUAL resource that everyone should turn to when trying to navigate food and diet culture!

I began to follow Autumn's concepts from about August last year and have dropped nearly 30 lbs which makes me very happy. I tried IF a year earlier and ended up gaining so I wasn't happy. Her information about getting enough protein in my system has really made a difference for me, especially with satiety. Also, she has said she doesn't eliminate carbs, she uses them consciously, such as having pizza occasionally or chips and salsa. I am a 'recovering carbaholic'. I often ate a big sandwich for lunch and then had potatoes or rice for dinner, often in rather large quantities. Since replacing those items with things like cottage cheese, Greek yogurt and more vegetables, I am losing weight in a way that is encouraging while also healthy.
Finally, if someone wants to be an 'influencer', using correct pronunciations is important. It is 'sandwich' not 'samwich'. Also, 'air quotes' may be almost as annoying as using 'like' about 20 times in one sentence. I know, Autumn is big on the air quotes which is why I listen to her videos but can't watch them. Sorry for my rant. Just one guy's opinion.

  • @makdem4603

This video is so cringe. Calorie counting is non existent in autumns plan. She teaches concepts of getting fat, protein and fiber in each meal with satiety being the goal. Not sure how that is “restrictive.” But yea, to each their own. I find it to be a great plan that fits easily into my lifestyle and makes me feel better than I ever did when I was a slave to my blood sugar levels. Just found this video to sound quite catty and read from a teleprompter, which was distracting.

I think the big discrepancy here is that you keep using "a healthy body" as the baseline, when her numbers on Americans and type 2 diabetes/insulin resistance are correct and worsening. So while you obviously know what you're talking about and aren't saying anything incorrect, you seem to be ignoring the hard fact that most Americans looking into weight loss are fighting a systemic problem that research shows involves insulin resistance, over consumption of sugars, and (according to one of my husband's doctors) that we don't tend to eat three meals a day and fast and sleep all night anymore, but tend to eat five meals a day plus snacks and sleep less. And that we've tended to do these things for decades before the problems they've created get so bad we absolutely need to fix them.
I understand why you're arguing for a less restrictive diet. I think it's an important and essential case to make. But your arguments are based on a decreasing population of healthy people in a mostly American audience where many of our foods are so low quality that the corporations have to make completely different versions for Canada and the UK. Most Americans who don't go against the grain when it comes to food (pun intended) will eventually need to do something extreme about their insulin resistance and weight.
Or move to another country. I know the only time I lost weight with literally zero effort, my pants literally falling off me in 4 months, was a semester abroad in the Caribbean. Due to a misunderstanding, I ended up living off fast and convenience store food. But it was pretty much zero beef, zero corn, zero high fructose corn syrup, zero hormones in everything, less bread, and more fish than I'd ever eaten in my whole life before or since. All of the fast food was more like home cooked street food than McDonald's (which had failed on the island). Conversely, many people who come here from the islands gain weight and eventually get the typical trifecta of diabetes, high blood pressure, and heart disease that plagues the black community in the US.

T2 Diabetes is a worldwide problem. It's a terrifying disease that CAN be avoided through the correct diet and exercise. I believe it only makes sense to limit sugar (carbs) when sugar is, at the core, what causes diabetes. There are thousands of new diabetics diagnosed everyday. My dad is diabetic; he is virtually blind and has had both legs amputated. He is on chronic insulin. My mom told me that the medical aid company is pushing up the Co- payments on insulin because there are basically too many diabetics that need insulin now which drives up the price. My country is VERY carb centric. There is a correlation here.

Post menopausal woman here. For me IF and watching my carb levels has helped with weight and my insulin levels. Everyone is different and I think you just need to experiment & find what works for you. For me tropical fruits, bananas, oatmeal etc really spike my blood sugar. High carb just doesn’t work for my “older” body. That’s just me ..I’m in no way keto though. Dr Jason Fung is the best authority on IF in my opinion if you try it out.

Same thing for me. 63 years old and high carb doesn't work for me either. Everyone is different. I am not Keto either. I do not feel deprived of anything I feel like I am eating great and best of all feeling great. If I want the "bread", I'll eat it as a treat, If I don't, I won't. A big thing for me was snacking, I don't snack anymore between meals and I don't feel the need to. That was a huge problem for me. People do IF for all kinds of reasons not just to lose weight.

eating carbs first thing in the morning spikes your insulin level and then it drastically dips. It the same as if you ate a candy bar that rush of sugar and then the low hits. The recommendation is to eat protein fat fiber as your first meal ... the other two should have some carbs ...

“Bougie grass-fed label” what the heck kind of commentary is that?? This highlights a problem I find with basically all dietitians, obviously b/c of their training, which doesn’t emphasize or scrutinize the issue at all, is the issue of food quality. So she’s actually saying conventional dairy is on par with grass-fed dairy? Wow. That’s just ignorant. And another thing, they frequently raise eyebrows if every statement or assertion isn’t backed up or substantiated with a study, it’s completely obnoxious and impractical. Studies can be valuable and even invaluable but they are not the end all. They’re more of a starting point or a part of the bigger equation. Pioneers find things out by trying a different route than what’s been proven or different than what prevailing theory is and sometimes you succeed and sometimes you fail, there’s nothing wrong with that, it’s actually part of the process and regardless of whether or not you have a study to back up your course of action, every person will still be doing some trial and error as there is no one size fits all and everyone has to understand and uncover their own bio individuality amongst even the best studied and proven theories. I’m generally not on board with dietitians, obviously right, but this lady is a particular turn off with her delivery and snobbish know-it-all approach. Not impressed, actually, quite unimpressed.

Hey Abbey! I was wondering if you have an opinion on intermittent fasting and the South Asian population. I've heard there's a lot of benefits because of the way our ancestors used to starve for long periods of time. Personally, when I tried intermittent fasting, I ended up reducing my LDLs, triglycerides, cholesterol, and HbA1c. And I've heard this from a lot of South Asians. (I couldn't keep it up though cause I would get ridiculously hungry at night, but since stopping my HbA1c has gone up again). So I was wondering if you know if this is actually helpful in this population.

Hi I am South Asian and was prediabetic. I reversed it through fasting, and low carb. I doubt she will believe it helpful to south asians as she follows a lot of old mainstream research. You can try taking some berberbine. Its a substitute to metformin that lowers blood sugar and cholesterol.
