Can you imagine what he felt like when he saw her there after all those years? I know I would totally get lost on what I was talking about lol I love this trilogy
I read that the trilogy was inspired by Linklater's time he spent with a woman named Amy Lehrhaupt. Linklater had hoped she would show up at a screening one day, but unbeknownst to him she had died in an accident in 1994. Jesse and Celine's reunion must have been what Linklater had hoped for.
I remember watching this in the theater and that moment in the editing when they switched from flashbacks to Celine standing in the bookstore. My heart skipped a beat.
In real life Ethan Hawke is a great writer as well, while he has a natural knack for dialogue (evidenced by many of the brilliant and fascinating verbal exchanges that take place in this movie). The man is quite versatile, this generally superb actor, writer, director, this pretty good athlete, this outstanding and articulate conversationalist, and a real handsome ladies man (and a real good and entertaining dude as well). Much respect and admiration for Ethan Hawke!
Man i could just feel how his heart jumped when he saw her. I wouldn't be just lost for words I would make a scene, bawling hysterically on the ground all curled up seeing the person I missed million times i could ever miss anyone combined. Atleast in my head. Probably he does here too lol
Actually the third one is not that good. The big move of Linklater was to create this, second movie. The first one was just a very sweet piece of playful art, but the second movie was elevating the whole concept. The characters became real humans with very deep interactions. The second movie does not exist without the first one, the first one got a huge extra meaning by the second one.
@@anujoseph_10 Because it could not decide what to do. You are right, some parts were about real life - those were great. But at some point the characters started to actively hurt each other, so instead of an interesing dynamic it was just awful. Before Sunset has actually great scenes for comparison: in the car and on the boat the two characters also show some not-so-nice, realistic manner, they lash out a bit. But it works, they are just human, they have a micro character development in this intense day, in this film. In Before Midnight it went far behind. Especially Celine went very far on hurting her husband. Jesse's opening monologue about his actual writing was just lame. For me Before Midnight is about bad writing. It is not all bad. It is just not good. I started to watch it like two actors doing something, not to people living their lives in an interesting way.
I Love that the book idea is about a flashbook and he's describing the character remembering his first love while the movie flashes back to him remembering her.
Ethan Hawke must be the luckiest lead actor in the world. He always get to do variety kind of interesting movies, from romance, sci-fi to action and very good ones too. And this is a classic!
I wonder how he held himself back to his seat and dialogue instead of just jumping off his chair at seeing her long lost love ...right there. In front . ah!!
I actually wrote an english paper that is a lot like his "next book" not the same story or anything but the same concept. That was before seeing this movie too.
she tells him she was there on purpose right after they meet. it was her favourite bookstore and she learned about his book and European tour from a newspaper I think
It's a symbol of innocence and purity and youth. The character doesn't have a daughter, he has a son, here he's just making associations of ideas. It's quite bold to put the two things together, but I would say it manages to not be creepy
Ethan Hawke is an Academy Award nominated actor who has been in over 100 films. But that slight pause when he saw Celine will always be his best work.
Akshita Katyal HBO MAX
I agree and I'd like to add that Julie Delpy was brilliant, too
Ethan Hawke and Julie Delpy should’ve been nominated for Best Actor and Actress at the academy awards that year.
Can you imagine what he felt like when he saw her there after all those years? I know I would totally get lost on what I was talking about lol I love this trilogy
I would start crying and my voice will tremble.
Heart would do a sudden pole vault into my asophagus.
Every part of me would burst
How perfect is the fact that he says "time is a lie" as he sees her?!
That's some good writing, timing and acting
And editing.

Wow, that's so sad 😢
Where did you read this? That’s so incredibly sad 😢
That made me cry
@d R They kept in touch but the distance was too much and it fizzled out. I think he hoped the movie would reconnect them and we'll never know.
Link later is really the last name? 😮
1:57 That's exactly how it feels like to see your crush show up. Your heart skips a beat.
When their eyes meet is just wonderful
Notice how the final scene is Celine dancing. I love this film so much
I love the vulnerability in his face at 2:11. Both he and Delpy are such wonderful, subtle actors.
I remember watching this in the theater and that moment in the editing when they switched from flashbacks to Celine standing in the bookstore. My heart skipped a beat.
1:51 One of the best examples of editing in any film.
Just visited this book shop today because of this movie. I love it
they have bugs in there, you know? :)
Same, it was a pilgrimage!
Where?
yes, I love this movie, and when we went to paris, I went to visit this book shop. I am from hongkong.
@@sho2sho2sho what bookshop is this?
Wonderful film, you can just feel Jessies shock and delight as he see's Celine after all those years.

i dont know what it is but i just love their conversation so much.

It's been 4 years. The magic doesn't fade away. Don't think it ever will.
Such a brilliant of use of flashbacks.
Man i could just feel how his heart jumped when he saw her.

I strongly feel like this trilogy is a gift to mankind from a man himself. One of the best ever

@@karamcsandwhy do u think the third one ain't good? Because it shows the harsh reality of life and not some cinematic bullcrap?

I just really want to read this book, wish it was real!
Me too! I am actually considering making a short film now! XD

0:24-0:56 are 30 seconds that completely changed my outlook on life. Happiness is in the doing, not in the getting what you want.

what a beautiful piece of editing
"i always kinda want to write a book that takes in the space of a pop song."
_let me sing you waltz..._
Yup.
The first two films in particular are loaded with foreshadowing and references to earlier scenes.
1:50 That cut 👍
Ethan Hawke must be the luckiest lead actor in the world. He always get to do variety kind of interesting movies, from romance, sci-fi to action and very good ones too. And this is a classic!
The pulse rate and the warmth at that moment.
I wonder how he held himself back to his seat and dialogue instead of just jumping off his chair at seeing her long lost love ...right there. In front . ah!!
I think this is one of the greatest scene any movie has ever shown
The most bizarre thing is the answer to everyone's thought was standing right there, Celine in the flesh.
U can see Jess sorrow face while telling the story
U can clearly see how he been through in 9years
His next book idea is reminiscent of Slaughter House Five. Which I love .
I actually wrote an english paper that is a lot like his "next book" not the same story or anything but the same concept. That was before seeing this movie too.
No lie I squealed when he saw her.
I read this "No Lie" as "No Light" at first, if you know what I mean ;)
I have the script, and it says...
*Celine shows up*
She had it ALL planned. Come on!
darcyissues can I read it too please? I'm begging you 😅
Elvio Cuellar you can buy it online. I bought it last year at Shakespeare & Co.
she tells him she was there on purpose right after they meet. it was her favourite bookstore and she learned about his book and European tour from a newspaper I think
Honestly, I still have no idea what Jesse’s next book is going to be about…
1:54 really kills me XD
9 years, after all that time, still
😢
Why didn't he think of this idea earlier? She'd have magically appeared instantly, like she did।
She barely aged from 1 to 2, and he barely aged from 2 to 3 IMO
Love this film
He looks A LOT better in the new one. Better than she does, actually

Anyone else find that daughter-girlfriend story kinda creepy or weird? Like, his daughter dancing reminds him of his ex-girlfriend dancing?
