      I hate him due to what I found out later in the game. When you first meet him he has splashes of blood on his cloth and he knew right away you are maidenless. Did it ring a bell ? He probably killed the maiden who is supposed to guide the tarnished at the beginning.My suspicion is confirmed later on when Varre asks you kill a maiden as an initiation to see Mogh .
      Varre is literally trying to prime the tarnished early on to either die( go find Godrick at early lv) or get recruited by Mogh if Varre finds the tarnished worthy( defeating Godrick). Either way Varre is a manipulator, and I despite him.

    Still upset there's no Lord of Blood/Mohgwyn Dynasty ending. Dung Eater gets one, but not Varre? Mohg? With all that grandeur and talk of bringing upon a new dynasty it's sooo insane there's not an ending related to Mohg or Varre, easily one of the most interesting questlines with one of the most disappointing/hollow endings.
    Also the reason Varre's eyes aren't red is likely tied to his outfits description, this part specifically: "Of the surgeons that were abducted by the Lord of Blood none were able to tame the accursed blood. None but Varré, that is; though he was an exception."

    • @VLimit11
      @VLimit11  2 ปีที่แล้ว +177

      I think other pieces of cut content suggest that there may have originally been factions that the player could join at some point in development. The bloody fingers and the volcano manor in particular seem like they were originally intended to be deeper than in the final release of the game.
      Also, I definitely agree on your point about Varre's eyes. That feels intentional, at least to me.

    • @jesusojeda7850
      @jesusojeda7850 2 ปีที่แล้ว +99

      Ranni's ending is the only one that you really follow through most of the game. The only other character that truly deserved some kind of ending by virtue of the magnitude of her quest is Millicent. The endings are one of elden ring's weak points, most feel rushed and undeserved.

    • @James-ne3lc
      @James-ne3lc 2 ปีที่แล้ว +74

      It's pretty obvious that Mohg trying to become Miquella's consort wouldn't amount to anything since he was unresponsive. Even when you ask Gideon about it he tells you to just leave Mohg alone since what he's doing is pointless.

    • @lerosallyn9279
      @lerosallyn9279 2 ปีที่แล้ว +61

      Nah all lore in the game points to Mohg’s dynasty never being able to come to fruition. Trying to give an ending related to it wouldn’t make sense at all because Miquella is dead after being removed from the Haligtree. The Formless Mother that Mohg spoke to doesn’t hold any power intrinsically in this realm. Even Gideon says to just leave Mohg alone cause there is no way his dynasty actually succeeds. Even the Dung Eater has a more sensible reason for his own ending, using the pox to curse future generations, rather than some Omen with blood magic feeding an already dead body to start a dynasty.
      It is an interesting questline, but if there was a Mohg ending, it defeats the purpose of environmental storytelling that the writers have done with Mohgwyn Palace. Maybe I’m biased but I feel like a Mohg ending would be too out of place. Everyone involved in this “dynasty” is either dead or insane and maybe that’s the point.

    Another clue hinting towards the corpse in the chapel of anticipation being our maiden is that you loot the tarnished wizened finger (the item that allows you to write messages) from her, and, the message in front of her on the ground reads “Though the path be broken and uncertain, claim the throne of elden lord!” We could infer that this message was left by her, for the tarnished.

      I mean, she kept saying "My apprentice" during all her lines lol. Also, she never once forced her will upon her player but merely asks for help but states that if you don't want to, it's perfectly fine. The way she respects you is actually very impressive because most other characters don't, unless you literally bonk them to death first.
      So yes, she did. She invited you over to Raya Lucaria if you side with her at the end of her questline as an honored guest. Sellen's goals were dubious, but I don't think she was evil, merely misguided. I believe the other sorcerers she used to fuse into a graven mass were all willing to be subject to her experiments, even if she used trickery to get her way.

    Varré's voice actor did a brilliant job, as you said you can hear the insincerity in his voice if you say the two fingers were magnificent and if there wasn't an option to talk to him again and say they seemed off you would probably want to make a new character to see his response to that.

    My own personal take on the 'Guided by Grace' scenario is that all proper Tarnished are guided by Grace when they first enter, though many lose sight of it later (Nepheli mentioned that she once saw grace, but no longer does). Roderika, however, isn't a Tarnished in the same sense as the Player Character; she was a noble who for some reason fell out of favor, and her family got rid of her by claiming she was touched by grace and thus needed to go to the Lands Between. In reality, it was a polite way to exile her and be fairly sure she couldn't come back.

    The maiden in the chapel is implied to have been killed by the spider found not too far from her. Given that there's a gaping hole in the ceiling and the door is barred. It's also the closest enemy that has a reason for being their, that being that they are actively hunting tarnished for grafting. It's fair to assume that the maiden barred the door trying to barricade herself in, but was killed after the grafted spider came in through the ceiling.

      @Bill Clinton Enjoyer It is the only reasonable explaination as to how the maiden died. The grafted scion was the only one in the area hunting tarnished at the time. It would explain why there was a struggle in that room as well as the hole in the ceiling.
      Even if the grafted scion didn't make the hole in the ceiling, it did wound the maiden before she locked the doors and was the closest enemy with a reason for hunting the maiden.

    You're right when you point out that we shouldn't rely on cut content to inform us about the game's world without taking it with a grain of salt, but I still think it's interesting to consider that in cut content, Varré would have been able to take us to the Roundtable Hold himself, meaning we wouldn't have needed to have Melina do it.

    • @RevengedSevenfold
      @RevengedSevenfold 2 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      This is super interesting, it kinda hints that qe could have had a nimber of characters be our "Maiden" as it were. True and proper NPCs that help and guide us to the ending we desire.
      We kinda do see this through Ranni in the Age Of Stars, as well as Hyetta in the Frenzied Flame and Fia in the Age Of Dusk. All characters that give huidance to an end of the story in the Lands Between.
      If this is a strong theory, perhaps the choice of "Maiden" made it too easy for the player to decipher if this was a game changing event/consequence.
      It also sort of hints at the possibility of romance options via these questlines. There are a few more NPCs who could have fit the role of guidance upon the player to have multitudes of endings. Characters that come to mind are Tanith of Volcano Manor, Patches, and of course, Varré.
      After writing this, I'm a bit sad it didn't come to fruition, but it doesn't take away from the experience Elden Ring delivers.

    I've seen in a comment under another Elden Ring lore video claiming that the characters that get a "bad ending" are the ones who are consumed by their ambitions/wishes/weaknesses/etc.
    Following this idea, Varré would be the result of an excess of love, unable to contain or temper it, Varré is in the end consumed by his own love for Mogh and his Dynasty. He had some affection to the Tarnished in a fatherly way I think, and because of this affection he let the player get to the Mausoleum which will ultimately lead to Varré's and the Dynasty's dismise.

    It always surprised me how almost flirty Varre’s tone of voice becomes when he starts calling you lambkin - that in addition to him always talking about love and being under the service of Mohg, the one and only gay icon, Varre be looking a bit fruity.
    Also that scene where you’re given the bloody fingernail. I mean come on. He 1000% is into the player character, no matter which body type you pick. This comment started out as a joke but I think I’ve convinced myself.

      The image I got of the entire Mohgwyn dynasty project was one of a small, but delusional group of people. Varre, while I think he is right to be sceptical of the existing order and the 2 Fingers, seems weak, thinking he's smarter than he actually is. He's not seeing Mohg's delusions of grandeur and he places all his hopes in someone who clearly never cared about the tarnished. He's misguided to say the least. At the end of the day, Mohg is no better than the 2 Fingers.

    I wish the quests in elden ring were a tad more explicit in explaining what the heck is going on - my interpretation of this quest was that you tell Varre you are having doubts about the two fingers just to test him, and when he opened up and told you about the lord of blood and all that, you were just playing him to be able to kill mohg like a good tarnished. But it's confusing - you are given an audience with the lord of blood and he just comes out of a cocoon and tries to kill you, there's should have been some explaination as to what you were doing

  • @Kamishi845

    It is my belief that Varré was looking to steal the player's strength sort of like the ultimate villain trope. He acts like your friend and like he cares for you, just so he can betray you just before you're too strong for him to handle. Except for Varré, he miscalculated the situation and he did get defeated. I'm uncertain about the details of the Japanese here, but in the original Japanese it was mentioned that Varré has a much more intimate form of speaking to the player as if they're a married couple already (there's no equivalent to that in English, so they essentially used the word "lambkin" as a replacement for that), so Varré's questline is obviously supposed to mirror Mohg's relationship with Miquella to some extent. So like Mohg, Varré doesn't actually care for the player, as much as he just wants them to elevate him to the status he believes they deserve.
    I can't say this with certainty but it's probably likely that Varré also used the Japanese word "ai" for love rather than "daisuki", with the former being a more intimate, deeper but also conceptual bond between two or more people or between a person/people and a concept e.g. a nation, and the latter is what I'd say is how English usually understands love as something you like a lot e.g. I love chocolate. In Mohg's lore, love plays an integral role especially vis-a-vis becoming an Elden Lord and between an Empyrean, and the love manifests as a mixture of bloody fluids (Mohg's "laying" with Miquella by essentially injecting Miquella with his blood would certainly make many people associate it as a form of rape).
    It is also notable that Mohg's lore has strong connections to pregnancy, childbirth and abortion, and it is not too farfetched to see Varré as he is dressed up as an earlier style for midwives rather than the surgeon most people see him as. That the player has to kill a maiden and stain a piece of cloth with their blood makes sense from a conceptual perspective, because a) it was very common and still is in many parts of the world, to die of childbirth and childbirth can be a very bloody ordeal and b) according to many cultures across the world, what separates a maiden i.e. an unmarried woman from a married one, is that she has laid with her husband on the wedding night and the proof of her virginity is the bleeding from her broken hymen. Varré really suggests that you go rape a woman to prove that you're the real deal and ready to have kids, essentially (which he wants to have with you but doesn't say it), because you're maidenless i.e. you were supposed to be married but you no longer can, so he offers an alternative to family union which doesn't necessitate marriage.
    And that's honestly just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to Mohg's and Varré's lore. Varré's weapon is a bouqet of red roses - in at least western culture which Elden Ring is mostly modeled of, a bouqet of red roses usually represents love between spouses and is a common decoration during the wedding.

    like who is she talking to? curse peddler. she said. if she's talking to varre, then yea, sellen should be stronger than him. but who's behind varre again? mohg. if sellen know all about the curse of the bloody finger. she should also know who is the demigod behind it. there is no way in hell sellen would be able to threaten mohg. so yea.. that threat.. kinda doesnt make sense in a way.
    maybe at first, they designed sellen to be as strong as rennala, but scratched it off in the final game.
    instead, they would just give us with a generic witch hunter enemy for that quest.
