"The fallen leaves tell a story. A story of destruction and rebuild. About a tarnished turned into dragon who made a new world fitting for his newly adopted form. The world was unformed, shrouded by fog. A land of gray crags, archtrees and everlasting dragons"
An age shrouded by fog, a land of grey crags, archtrees and everlasting dragons but in time a Fire will occur, and disparity will brought about together with the fire. Heat and cold, life and death, and, of course, light and dark.
The feeling I got when I discovered the dragon lord completely by accident and on my own was unmatched to anything I've felt in the game before, it was breathtaking
After the enemies and bosses I’ve encountered in Farum Azula, I was deterred from ever wanting to return to that place and explore any further, so of course I missed the boss. You’re lucky you encountered the boss on your blind play through man, there’s no other experience as thrilling as finding a huge secret in a FromSoftware game
I went into the dragon lord chamber after leveling I was 120 anyways he is weakest not to destined death or anything else he is weak to Dragon lighting lol I two shotted him
One thing I've seen mentioned that I like the idea of: it says Placidusax is waiting the return of his God. If you look at how he's posed in his arena, his silhouette is similar to the one the two fingers in the round table take when trying to commune with the Greater Will.
I may be wrong but it seemed more to me like it was a reference to a cocoon state. Like je was Frozen in Time in a chrysalis. More like a symbolic stance
Actually that’s a really good observation. Nothing seems to suggest that Placidusax and the ancient dragons were enemies of the Greater Will. It’s important to note that the Greater Will is not a god - it’s an Outer God, specifically. Marika is a god, and one becomes Lord by becoming consort to a god. That’s why Mohg declares himself Lord of Blood, with Miquella acting as his consort and god. I think the god that fled/disappeared was probably the Greater Will’s agent before Marika, and Placidusax was that god’s Lord.
Interesting, however Placidusax is also missing a head and part of his tail, if you look closely while fighting him you can see his tail has been cut short, and their appears to be a Neck Stump near his left shoulder, and as the video says their is evidence that this head was lost in the war with the golden order. Also Greyoll is 1 of only 2 FEMALE dragons that we know of. and if the Dragon Outer Gods choses Vessels like the Greater Will, perhaps the missing Dragon God is also Female. also I am only theorizing but Greyoll could be Gransax's or Placidusex's Mate. in the case of Gransax she is Large enough to nearly match Him. but instead of producing Ancient Dragon Offspring she produces more plentiful Lesser Dragons which many have VERY potent power anyway being more tied to the lands between, examples include the Rot Dragon, a standard if powerful fire dragon, a Dragon of Ice and a Dragon of Glinstone. What we dont see from these lesser Breeds is the Telltale Red Lightning or even standard Gold Lightning. If She was Placidusax's Mate (basically the God of the Dragons Outer God), perhaps she was affected in a way similar to Marika, sort of Imprisoned and Unable to bear Full Ancient TYpe Dragon Offspring any longer. in this regard we could Theorize that the Ancient Dragons are more like the Empyrean's that would appear under Marika's rule. Powerful Beings that could have Succeeded her as the Dragon Queen/God. instead she ended up bearing the dragon equivalent of omen children. Also speaking of Empyrean Children, Ranni states she knows of only 3 of Marika's Children which can claim that title, Herself, Malenia, and Miquella. Also I believe that when Ranni cut away her Empyrean Flesh, it Droze her mother a little mad because she surrounds herself with her "sweeties" all female sorceress's with poorly functioning legs. However the Frenzied Flame Ending Proves that their was a 4th which Ranni did not Know about, Now whether or not Melina really is the Gloam Eyed Queen or just a facsimile i can't rightly say. but Ranni seems to have Modelled her Doll body very similar to Melina's looks, and Melina teaches us how to use runes, and gives us the spirit whistle that calls Torrent. Only the Finger Maidens and the Empyrean's would likely have the knowledge to turn Runes into power. However Melina also tells us Early on that she was tasked with a job by her mother "who lives in the Erdtree" this is a direct connection to Marika. Melina therefore must be an Empyrean, she was not born to either of Marika's Consorts and was likely Born before the choosing of Houra Louh as Marika's first Consort and his renaming. The young Girl surrounded by wolves we see in Faram Azula Statues/Art work if she is Marika, born among the beast men or Raised by them she likely had a Life in the Dragon City. What if the Greater Will watched as the Dragon became complacent, high in the sky none could challenge their power, but they also lacked interest in the lands beneath them. It offered a young girl and her beastman half brother immense power, in exchange for becoming it's Vessel in the lands between and ushering humanity into a Golden Age, because it had seen that the beastmen were degenerating into more primitive forms and their minds wasting away. Accepting the bargain the Elden beast and Elden ring were Given to this young woman but a side effect was her having a baby soon after, which would go on to Create assassins, ushering in Death to those who the Greater will decreed must die. The Black Knives seem to utilize a fraction of the Rune of Death forged by Ranni after she stole it from Maliketh. but the Original Assassins were the Godskins, beings which were similar to the Crucible Knights in that they took on aspects of certain foes, but they also Wielded the Black Flame, fire powered by the Rune of Death. That is Until Marika thought their Power was growing too much so she handed the Rune of Death to Maliketh who sealed it and its power away, but not before those flames were used to Burn Countless Dragons im sure. The rest as they say would be history, of course these are just my random thoughts.
@@Necrotaku999 how so? The godskins only had 1 enemy the demigods. Only when the rune of death was sealed by Maliketh would they see the power of their black flame weaken. Thus making them innefective as Demi-God assassins. Their mistress was the gloam eyed queen which due to her purple eye we can surmise is our own Finger Maiden Melinia or whatever her name is. Who says her mother inside the Erdtree gave her a task to facilitate the destruction of a god or outer god. Marika also gave our own blacksmith in the hold the task of forging a god slaying weapon. But one had already been forged. The gloam eyed queens own sword the godslayer but it relied on the now diminished power of the black flame. So we have Melena/Gloam eyed queen who claims to be a daughter of Marika living within the Erdtree. Tasked with aiding a tarnished in killing Marika/the Beast and breaking the greater wills hold on the lands between, so that the people could be free of the meddling outer god. The rest is speculative theory, which i have pieced together from lore videos, so if it contradicts item descriptions then the lore videos i have watched also are wrong in their presentation of lore and their theories. That includes this video.
It would be cool to fight Placidusax in his prime with all the heads. What we fight in game is a basically broken and beaten husk and he still manages to kick ass. Lots of parallels with Redahn now that I think about it.
I'm hoping a future DLC gives us a lot of those gods and bosses at their best through shenanigans'. Cured Melania, Godwyn, Grandsax, Prime Placidusax, Rotless Radahn and of course, Adult Miquella.
@@ZenKrio most of those unless we somehow travel back in time arent going to happen. And we killed killed Malenia so curing the dead is pointless. Miquella and an awakend godwyn are the only 2 plausible ones again unless we travel back in time. But if we go back in time i would rather see a rising Marika, maybe we help her to establish the golden order. Or meet the Gloam Eyed Queen, or Snow witch. However Fromsoft rarely uses DLC to actually answer established mysteries. Instead using it to introduce new characters and mysteries.
"The eye of the storm is the only place which stands still" This was brought to my mind when you mentioned the themes time standing still and the storm. In the eye of the storm; azula, time stands still, while in the rest of the world, it's flowing forwards
You dont need to sacrifice a maiden to reach Farum Azula, you can sacrifice yourself and still make it. Alexander threw himself into the fire so he could fix his body and that's how he made it.
he does say "usually my sacrificing a maiden" and mentioned that to get there you just have to light the giant's furnace (no matter how you end up doing it, but maidens apparently always light it without external factors like the frenzied flame)
@@MikesChannel1108thats one way technically, but when i travelled there it seemed that im on some stranded little concrete block way further from the main farum azula complex. No site of grace to be found anywhere near. the only way i could go back was to either fast travel back to any site of grace i have unlocked already or diecand spawn by the four belfries.
Since Maliketh is described as a half-brother to Marika in one of his remembrance descriptions, I think the statue of the girl surrounded by wolves that we find in his boss room is a young Marika, surrounded by her beastly kin.
@@hugo-pg5tv That can still be after they were already associated together. Iji says Blaidd and Ranni used to play together and this was before her path of becoming empyrean, could be the case with Marika as wel
It likely is a representation of Marika, even if it is only symbolic. It could simply be a representation of the concept of Empyrean and Shadow in the time of the Golden Order, which was co-opted from the original concept of loyalty between the Beastmen of Azula and their Lord Dragons. The shrine of a girl and her loyal hounds represents just that: the unbreakable loyalty and love between a dog and their mistress/master, which we see very clearly in both the stories of Malekith and Blaid. I think it was likely fashioned for/by Malekith (or his more lucid persona, Guranq) in an attempt to calm his separation anxiety after being sent to Farum Azula with the Death rune.
Possible. But it could also be something older than the Golden Order. I think it likely has something to do with Albinaurics, like Latenna, and their bond with wolves.
3:20 "Placidusax is nowhere to be found" Actually you can find him. From the Beside the Great Bridge site of Grace, if you look out westward, you can see him inside the stone of the floating city.
@@GoddHoward77 but remember , placidusax on the amulet had 4 heads, but when the player finds him, he has 2 heads cus the other 2 were cut off and he also has 4 wings but his lower back right is somehow cut off or damaged.
Interestingly enough, 'sax' means stone in latin. If one pays close attention, the dragons all seem to have a resemblance to a statue being given life. 'Placidus' means calm (like he said in the vid), 'Fortis' means strong, 'Grandus' or 'Gran' means large, 'Lansea' means lance. So basically this means that 'Placisusax was probabbly known as a calm dragon .His fight is oddly very calm even though he demonstrates immense power. 'Fortissax' was clearly known for his badass strength. His OST itself shows a lot power and authority, which he clearly had in a period before we find him weakened by blight. 'Lanseax' was probabbly known for her piercing power, and Gransax was clearly an enormous dragon (the one we find dead in Leyndell), probabbly the biggest of them. What makes them all related is that they're all made of a significant amount of stone.
Also, gravel stone crafting material supports this further, as it's "stone chunks thought to be parts of ancient dragon scales" or something similar, might have paraphrased it a bit
The reason why Alexander is in Farum Azula is because he probably jumped into the fire (Which is the same that happens to the Lord of Frenzy). He stated in Mt. Gelmir that he was looking for a stronger flame to temper his body, that flame being the giant's flame. He also can be summoned in the fire fiant fight which rëenforces the idea that he was trying to temper his body in the Giant's flame but ended up in Farum Azula.
Whats interesting to note of Dragonlord Placidusax is that for some reason Miquella's Needle has the interaction to ward off outer gods only specific to his arena. Making me speculate that whatever old, possibly an outer, god he worshipped was a lot more powerful than any of the existing outer gods trying to ascend demigods to gods. Also the fact that no one knew about the whereabouts of Dragonlord Placidusax place hence why he isnt affected by bonus damage of Dragon weapons because he never went out of his place during the war, making me believe that the heart of the storm is a place unseen by any outer god currently known. Leading to my point that the outer god influencing Miquella is probably the same outer god that left Dragonlord Placidusax. I mean its coincidental that the curse of Miquella is eternal youth and age operates on time, Placidusax might've been an Elden Lord but he was no demigod so the outer god had no plans for him as he cant ascend him to godhood but he guards the arena as if waiting for a new god to be reborn.
Miquella’s needle works in the arena because it’s outside of time, or in the past, so you’re removing the curse of the frenzied flame before you even got it
That explanation is kinda wack imo. I think a more reasonable one would be to say that since you are outside of time, it's both imperfect and perfect at the same time. When the needle was imperfect, it staved off the rot, but being perfected, it actually does the job and is rid of it.@@Bundpataka
I’ve been thinking on it, but what if the reason why Placidusax’s God left was because the meteor that hit Farum Azula WAS the Elden beast and the god left because it was a small fish when compared to the “Greater Will”, so he left when the first signs of its influence came to the lands between, it would also explained why the dragons attacked the golden order in the first place since the people of Lyendell revered the thing that killed their city.
The only reason this theory might not make sense is that the Elden Beast is the Elden Ring, the Elden Stars incantation says as much. How would a Dragonlord, who brandished an older Elden Ring as Elden Lord, be supplanted by the arrival of the Elden Ring? You know what I mean?
@@whatthebeardoin3160 The Elden Beast became the Elden Ring, it is stated. But we have another example of the game referring to something becoming another in Marika's quote about Radagon "not yet becoming" her. Is it possible that the Elden Beast bound itself intrinsically to the already existing Elden Ring, like how Marika and Radagon were bound? And how the Erdtree linked its roots to the Greattree.
@@elias.t You know, I love elden ring and all souls games, but sometimes I wonder if some of those paradox are pure bad writing that get a pass because players think it's actually a super smart plot
@@hyper_channel believe it or not, most of the dualism in this game is taken from earlier sources, I don’t think it’s bad writing, I like the way this game portrays things, and if you subscribe to the alchemy theory, then look at elden ring as if everything was an agent right?
Playing as a “Dragon Knight” on this run, Placidusax was my goal from the beginning of the game. Entering that arena was amazing, especially not having seen that cutscene on my previous playthrough. His fight was spectacular and it took everything I had to take him down. His design, the score, even the run through Farum Azula to his boss room was an incredible experience. Not a fight I’ll soon forget. My favorite of the series.
This one was really fun for me to make, but there's so much more about Farum Azula that was beyond the scope of this video. I'll probably do another video in the future that focuses on Maliketh and the beasts to cover my thoughts and findings. Thanks for watching, and feedback is still always appreciated.
@@thanhuong8752 that's interesting. You might be on to something. The detail is really something. From software really puts a lot of thought into their games
Man Faram Azula has to be one of the most confusing and mysterious areas in the game, despite how it ties with so many characters in the game. Definitely not helped by how time is convoluted there. I believe one person mentioned how the "god" referenced in Placidusax's remembrance might actually refer to a god-figure like Marika (who was considered a god by the denizens of the Lands Between), since the title of Elden Lord is normally referring to a consort of a god like how Godfrey and Radagon became Elden Lords by marrying Marika. His remembrance doesn't say "Outer God", which would have been specifically mentioned if so, like with the Formless Mother, Scarlet Rot, and the Outer God of the Deathbirds, so maybe Placidusax's god-consort fled rather than an Outer God, since there's no mention of the Dragons having their own Outer God compared to the Rot, Deathbirds, etc. Plus, the Dragons not having their own specific Outer God and instead having their god/empyrean fleeing would explain the presence of the unique Elden Ring formation in Malekith's arena. Maybe it's what the Elden Ring would look like if the Rune of Death wasn't removed? One thing that confuses me about Faram Azula is the presence of Beasts like Malekith. If I remember correctly, Beasts and Dragons seem to represent some factions of primordial life from the Crucible, maybe before even the Elden Beast came to the Lands Between, since the Beast Incantations state that Beasts were among the first to gain intelligence, and of course the stone scales that grant the Ancient Dragons their immortality and god-slaying capabilities. So, if Beasts were that ancient, then how exactly is Malekith Marika's half-brother? Marika and her fellow Numen are for all intents and purposes aliens/extraterrestrial beings from another world and not native to the Lands Between. How are Marika and Malekith related? You made an interesting point in how it seems that in order to reach Faram Azula you have to sacrifice a Kindling Maiden to get there, but what about in the Frenzied Flame ending? Melina is no longer working with us, so how could we as the bearer of the Frenzied Flame arrive at Faram Azula without a kindling maiden? Is the purpose of kindling maidens to bring us to Faram Azula, or is it more specifically to bring us to Destined Death? Melina's dialogue seems to insinuate that the role of a kindling maiden such as her was to bring the Tarnished to the road to Destined Death. So Marika "betrayed" Malekith by banishing him to an area outside of time, so that he can be slaughtered by the Tarnished at a later date, despite him following her orders completely, from slaying the Gloam-Eyed Queen, to holding onto the Rune of Death. Also I'm surprised you didn't mention how Miquella's Needle could only be used in Placidusax's arena and nowhere else in the game. If there is DLC I believe that time travel might work like it did in DS2 where the "time-travel" involved going into people's memories of the past and altering events in their dreams and memories to get certain items and talk to people of the past. As the demi-god most affiliated with growth and dreams, Miquella seems to be an important character who will be needed for us to travel to the past, whether physically or through dreams and memories. Awesome video nonetheless though!
"It is said..." Perhaps this indicates that this is what the common man knows and believes? And I doubt your avarege farmer joe in the lands between know's what an outer-god is. For all that we know, Placidusax may have very well *killed* is outer-god. We straight up don't know.
We become elden lord but we don't have a consort and the descripion is told wrong cuz if we translate the japanese to English it says the lord of eld and it elden lord can just be way to describe him as a ruler over the land between and the giants have an outer god but it doesn't straight up say outer god just god and the place we fight malekith may have been built after cuz the elden ring came with the elden beast and placidusax is older than the elden beast.
Wanted to add a small idea, I believe and correct me if I am wrong that ranni refers to blaidd as her brother. When in actuality he has no actually familial relation to her, he was a gift given to her by the fingers when she was a child and she has known him all her life. What if the same applies to Maliketh? Also something else to note blaidd goes mad because ranni directly oppose the greater will and takes actions to free her self and the denizens of the greater wills influence. Marika seems to have done something similar in the form of the shattering, possibly causing maliketh to begin losing himself. I mean as Gurranq he constantly seems to be in a position of nearly losing himself. But this is all just some food for thought
The description of his remembrance doesn't say that his outer god fled but his god which might refer to a god figure like marika instead , the outer god of the dragons could be the greater will itself which might explained why placidusax is called elden lord and there's an ancient looking elden ring in farum azula , maybe the greater will eventually saw the ancient dragons unfit to uphold the elden ring so he chose marika to be his new god puppet , he's also missing 2 maybe 3 heads so he could have been a god and an elden lord at the same time like marika and radagon
"It is said..." this basically shows what your common-Joe believes or have heard. And I don't think common-Joe know's what an Outer-God is. Besides, the pose that Placidusax makes when we enter his arena is very similare to when the Two-Fingers are communing with their outer-god, The Greater Will.
@@hugo-pg5tv are we sure when the elden ring came into the lands between exactly ? When know it's long ago but we don't know in what age perhaps it's even older than the dragons
He was fairly challenging when I beat him But he was the only boss I never got even slightly agitated fighting (until I got me hit by his lasers when he had 3 inches of health) super fun and visually stunning fight
Your videos are amazing, well written and brig a lot to the table. It just occurred me that Godrick tried to get the power of dragons by force with communion and blood magic, while Godwyn befriended dragons, learned with them and became powerful due to this alliance. Oh, Godrick.
We know the outer gods send meteorites as vengeance, often containing gods themselves, so seems like the meteorite that struck Farum Azula could be something similar, if not the same meteorite that contained Astel.
@@Skibbutz I don't believe it was the Elden Beast due to the nature of the Ruin Greatsword which fell from Farum Azula. This sword is primarily a magic based weapon, and its attacks are similar to the fallingstar beasts, while the Elden Beast uses holy attacks, and not magical attacks.
@@Skibbutz That doesn't seem possible, since to be Elden Lord, Placidusax would need to be consort to the current host of the Elden Ring, and I don't see how that'd be possible if the Elden Beast hadn't hit the Lands Between yet.
4:55 And 2 years later with the DLC finally out, now we know the reason why Placidusax looks like that. Speaking of reversing time, I'd love to witness that reason.
The "god" that Placidusax was consort/elden lord to was probably the Dusk Eyed Queen, it's almost too good to be true if you look at and compare the evidence. Firstly and most importantly is she is cited as a "chosen empyrean" meaning she was at LEAST a candidate once. The only other characters who are empyreans (that we know of) are Marika and her children, who all came after the Dusk anyways. That narrows the candidates to...just her. She is also the first owner of Death and leads an army of literal God-killers in a primordial age of many minor gods, which would make her the chief authority amongst them but more like a psuedo-god like Marika was, hence why they are always called "Queen" despite being so much more. Recall only these specific empyrean psuedo-gods can make someone Elden Lord, not just any god will do. Placidusax's god is also stated as "was fled", very specific tensing, as in forced to flee...like after losing a war? Hmmm, and her sword states she was "defeated" by maliketh, not killed, just defeated (like how the fell god was during the War of Giants?) After this she basically just vanishes from all records and descriptions, put the two together. I'm also willing to bet that Marika is her daughter/sister by some convoluted means as empyreans seem to be a direct lineage thing, explaining her usurpation power struggle blah blah blah GRMM you know the deal although none of that is important to my theory. I feel pretty good about this theory but if you know any other empyreans/factors feel free to help. 99% certain the dlc will be about her and/or Miquella btw, since they're the only characters besides Melina with such open ended backgrounds, and From loves their time travel.
@@hugo-pg5tv No conformation of that and farum has a design for a primordial elden ring that's different from the current one more than likely the dragonlords
@@dakarai47 perhaps this is where the alchemy themes of Elden Ring comes in to place. I mean there are loads of connections to that stuff in the game, the Elden Ring being the Philosopher's Stone. But yeah, the Elden Beast is the source of the Erdtree. And the Elden Beast *is* the Elden Ring.
I’ve come to think that the meteor that struck farum azula was the one containing the elden beast, it would make sense based on the timeline they seem to be painting with it frozen in that moment since the rise of the erdtree
I like these theories. There are a lot of meteors that hit TLB and manifest in different cosmic forms. I think it is great to connect the meteor that hit FA as the Elden Beast/Ring that heralded the end of the Dragon's age. Placidusax probably reigned as Elden Lord over TLB which included the Crucible of Life. I think Marika used the Elden Ring to tie the Crucible to the Greater Will/Golden Order and grow the Erdtree out of it, building the capital around it. By removing the Rune of Death she bound all souls to return to the Crucible/Erdtree and could feed its growth through conquest. It's possible that the outer god the dragons worshipped was the Greater Will or even the One Great which fled or split off and left the dragons as evidenced by the gold magic/lightning. Placidusax could have entered his trance either soon after FA was struck to preserve it or he could have been wounded in the war with the Erdtree forces and entered it after to keep it up with whatever he had left and await their god to return. I think the dragons manifested the storms to keep FA floating after their the meteor struck/their god fled and after being defeated Placidusax entered his trance to keep the crumbling at bay. Either way, Maliketh stayed in FA to guard the Rune of Death and that symbol in his room probably depicts the Elden Ring with the Crucible as its earliest representation while they were still associated. Could either view it as a symbol that they conquered the dragons, one of their first enemies, when Maliketh took up residence, or as evidence that the dragons also worshipped the Greater Will or One Great and included the Crucible in that.
Pro tip if you fight him with a faith build: Use the Darkblade incantation. Two swipes of it with 60 faith and it chunked him down nearly 1/3 of his total hp. My fight with him with a lvl 110 character lasted under a minute
@@eliblaster9006 Yes it's the incantation you can get from a remembrance of the main boss in the same area you fight Placidusax. Or it must be called Blackblade sorry it must of slipped my mind
This is my absolute favorite bossfight in the game. I have grinded this dragon more than 200 times. The most difficult part of the fight now is if the host of fingers can live long enough for me to kill it. If you're on PC and find a summon sign named "Comfort D Dragon" Summon me and do your best to survive. I'll kill it for ya. (group password MortDrac to find me easier)
I think the point in time faurum azula is when we reach it is in the future, since even if we kill maliketh, gurranq is still in the lands between, but if we do his quest first, then maliketh responds to recognising the player
Placidusax is by far my favorite boss. The arena, the fight/abilities/moveset, the music oh god the MUSIC!!! Makes you feel like you're fighting something truly legendary and otherworldly. Imagine fighting him in his prime.
not gonna lie, on my first character I didn't see the prompt to lay down to get to him and just thought fromsoft was trolling me with a path that led to nowhere..... found it on my second playthrough and was blown away that I missed that boss of a boss
Fought this guy for the first time yesterday, still thinking about it today. What a fantastic boss fight. Still early to call it, but have to say its very high on my rankings of soulsborne bosses, probably top 5
The first time I saw Placidusax it was because I somehow encountered a glitch that let me warp to his boss room via the map, despite never even having been there. I spawned inside Placidusax and immediately started fighting him, and each time I died, I would respawn in the same place since it was considered my most recent grace (even though there wasn't a grace). I won eventually, but I was close to softlocking my game. A lot of folks have talked about how amazing it is to find Placidusax's boss fight all on their own, and yeah, I have to agree.
GRRM being a co creator makes me on edge on how deep things like etymology can go in some cases. An example being that Fortis is traced back to Latin, meaning strong, and with the case of placidusax I'd assume there to be meaning to any dragons name if it has sax in it, however lansseax is different in it's spelling but lans can be traced as shorthand for a Germanic surname based on a word meaning shining or holy land, and then there is of course the interesting choice for the ending sound (Saks) to be spelled differently here, and in fact is spelled the exact same way as the seax knife and has an etymology shared with sax tracing to a Germanic word meaning to cut so now we have various names that translate roughly to be some form of cutting, ie strong, calm, or to do with the holy land (which is where you find lansseax). Does this have any deep lore implications, prolly not but Mr Martin sends me down these rabbit holes
Okay an additional note is Gransax who's spear does not give much to work with but who is noted as the cause of the draconic tree sentinels who's armor sets mention his assault on Lyendell inspiring them to fight dragons by becoming dragons, and while I found nothing for Gran, the croatian granne is translated to branch meaning Gransax, the only dragon to breach Lyendell's walls and therefore the greatest threat by dragons to the Erdtree, is by name the branch cutter
What I find also interesting about the dragon lord, that he has also 2 other wings behind his front wings, which shows that he lost two of his four wings in a battle maybe
I really hope they do something in the DLC that involves seeing some of the demigods we fight in the game at they’re prime or as normal NPC’s we can interact with. I say this because I specifically really want to see a young radahn as an NPC with a cool quest line, maybe helping him stop the stars, because he’s such a cool character
would be neat to have a time paradox quest line where you can do a melania quest line where if you have her sword. You are the teacher who teaches her waterfowl dance the irony would be great
What may help is looking into the names. From does not make this easy at all so this may be a long post but it may help with lore. If you just google farum you'll come away thinking farum means "father" because of a dutch town name but the lands between prefer latin. Further searching will find mentions of "farum" in ecclesiastical and medieval latin works. That makes it much more difficult because most latin courses and online references teach classical latin Digging and you'll find some people on reddit who think it means lighthouse in latin. It actually refers to a specific lighthouse. Farum is latin and comes from the greek pharos. Pharos is the island on which the lighthouse of alexandria once stood. The lighthouse was famously destroyed in an earthquake Pharos may be directly related to pharoah in greek meaning "big/great house" and that word eventually became the greek word for egyptian royalty, but if it actually is then that has been lost to time Azula comes from the latin word "blue" So we may get a glimpse of farum azulas function through its name. It may not have just been a temple but rather a way to guide people. The blue could represent the lighthouse in the sky, or it could be seen as a guideway point for blue phantoms who are PCs sent to defend other PCs from invasion in game As for placidusax it's important to remember latin words have many meanings. English likes to use much fewer definitions to convey a thought. Placidus means "gentle, calm, mild, peaceful". Placidusax is far from gentle or calm so I feel like he is named for the peaceful quality he created while elden lord "But why use placidus and not pax/pacem to mean peace?" you might add. Peace to romans was just the state of winning a war. It is different from our concept of peace which is the state of no war. They had entire rituals around great victories. Peac is always in the context of war. Pax Romana is the state after augustus won the great civil wars. If two sides fight and one side wins, only the winning side has peace. Therefore I feel like placidus would be better way to convey our concept of peace, which is the calmness from no war. We must also look at the second part of his name. Latin loves to cram two words together. Sax probably comes from latin saxum, saxi meaning "stone". It fits a major feature of the dragons, which is their stone appearance Placidusax probably means "peaceful, calm stone". While we're at it Gransax means "tall, large, fully grown stone" and fortissax is "brave, powerful, strong stone" Dragons names appear to be referencing their qualities. Placidusax was probably an elden lord who resided over an era without much war Personally I feel that because of his name, his powers, and the name of farum azula and the function of the structure it was based on that it may have been a guide and placidusax may have used his powers to light the way down below. Rather than being the dragons main holy temple, it was instead maybe a way to guide the people to the holy area. Like the dragons version of the erdtree or something. It was only after he was attacked that his powers turned into the nuclear hellfire lightning breath we know of from the fight. The golden order attacked the dragons and what was peaceful and useful had to turn violent
Placidusax and Lichdragon are the only two bosses I missed on my initial playthrough because I had no idea they existed. Did both on the second playthrough since I looked up anything I'd missed. Both great cinematic fights but I'd rate both a 4/10 on difficulty. None of the dragons are hard beyond their 1 shot mechanics if you don't know them.
In Shadow of the Erdtree, Bayle the Dread is shown with the other two heads of Placidusax on his body. So that must explain why Placi was missing two. There’s also a priestess who wants the tarnished to slay Bayle in the name of Placi
my assumption is that Farum Azula was destroyed by the Elden Beast arriving via meteor, and that same impact is what sent the eternal cities underground
***One thing you failed to mention, if i understood correctly, it seems the giants were allies to the dragons then later betrayed them to help the era of the erdtree come forth... I found that text next to the her so grave mountaintop or something like that but yeah i understood from that that the giants were allies to the dragons, giants then decided to betray them and put the fire out to bring the new era. What if the fire was turned off because it was a way to teleport, or somehow gave the dragons strength? Kind of off that the giants with that message engraved in the sword cemetery thing emphasized that the giants were the cause for the erdtree era to start
On the bridge before you enter the Maliketh boss fight, you can see the remnants of Placidusax on a stone wall? The heads and that damaged tail look VERY similar to our Dragonlord. I linked a pic of that wall on my previous comment (got probably auto deleted).
A good video! But I believe it's flawed on two points: The god that abandoned Placidusax is more likely the vessel for the Elden ring made god and then fled for an unknown reason. Possibly because the "god" was mortal and saw an end to it's reign? You could draw parallels between the abandonment of the greater will by the shattering and perhaps the exile state of Farum Azula in the air. 2 is that the beastmen was chosen as foundation in the walls, I perceive that a rock burial is akin to a root burial in "modern times" and is a great honour. The dragons became a wall of living rock to protect their lord when they perished, something that a people of beastmen granted intelligence probably would sought after. And like always with these games, I wonder if the truth lies somewhere in between...
it's kind of odd that so many people talk about theorizing who the storm lord is, but i'm pretty sure we find him, or at least the ashes of him when you go back to the first area of the game and enter the previously closed door beside the church we start in
When I thought this boss and saw him charging up an attack I ran away and the way it cuts off the music before slamming the ground was epic can't believe how fromsoft hide some of there best work
I would think that the cult of Dragon Communion were enemies of the Dragons and Dragon worshipers. Lore in-game states that the Dragons viewed "communion" (killing them and eating their hearts to gain their power) as a grave sin, their Dragon hunters wore body parts of hunted dragons on their armour."
By far one of the most challenging yet enjoyable bosses in the game. Absolutely phenomenal arena and boss design, the opening cutscene took my breath away.
There used to be 4 fingers in the time of the dragons, after plaxy lost one head he was the 3 fingers maddened by revenge and embraced chaos, once he lost his 3rd he began the 2 fingers trying to make peace in the world. Plaxy when first seen is 2 heads pointing up with wings wrapped around him forming a hand showing peace. the 2 fingers in round table hold are the 2 last fingers of plaxy, and he is the primordial crucible.
*People datamined a unimplemented ending. Where both three-fingers and two-fingers are being stitched together as one, resembling a true god. And dragon's god images on the windows sort of resembles a golden order arc on top of it. So it might be that Dragons god was shattered into two different beings, and one became a golden order.*
it's also kind of cool to note that if you die upon first meeting him, you can fast travel back down to his fight, but you'll be trapped spawning there since it counts as your last site interacted with, but personally i see it as getting trapped within Placidusax's own time prison, dueling steel and bone with the lord until he can no longer
@@berserker5551 now that i think about it im not entirely sure if it was supposed to happen, cause i dont remember even getting to him, but his site of grace showed up so i kinda got trapped in there, saved me that nasty run tho
Okay, this is a bit of unorganized rambling, but hopefully someone likes at least some of the ideas here. So in my opinion, the War against the Ancient Dragons directly preceded the events leading to the shattering. Maliketh's presence in Farum Azula is not for no reason. He was Marika's shadowbound beast, and his presence there to me implied either (or both) of the following 1. He was there to be kept "on ice" for when Marika needed something deader than dead OR 2. He was there to do battle with the Dragonlord, b/c the Dragonlord was likely a god in true that could only be killed be Destined Death. Maliketh was probably the one who wounded Placidusax, as there aren't many beings who could even pull that off if point #2 is on the money. But in the course of this battle, conspirators working with Ranni (or Ranni herself) managed to steal a piece of the Rune of Death from him. Deprived of the complete Rune of Death, Maliketh found himself unable to kill the Dragonlord completely. Meanwhile, Godwyn, negotiating a peace and friendship with Fortisax, is murdered by the Black Knives-- possibly because he was effectively conspiring with a rival to Marika's Golden Order. Fortisax, enraged by the murder, bands together with his sister and Godwyn's knights and creates the seed of the Dragon Cult as it would be adopted in Leyndell. Regarding Godwyn's murder itself, I'd go a step further and speculate this might be where the Radagon/Marika schism comes into play... Radagon is demonstrated considerably more loyal to the Greater Will/Elden Ring itself than Marika ultimately is, and he did not have a direct familial bond with Godwyn. He may well have ordered the assassination, but as a consequence, Marika then sought to shatter the Ring. Ultimately, with the Greater Will fled, and the Dragonlord and Maliketh both in hiding, a leaderless Leyndell turned to sources of guidance and leadership that would have been heretical during the Order's zenith-- an Omen King, and the Dragon Cult.
Skipped back through this and didnt see if you touched on this or not; but in the center of the area, you see the fossil of Placid in the walls, but you only see two heads. I think part of him was destroyed, and put/fell into those walls as fossils, and the remains were kept in that time loop/dimension where he retreated to.
An "Age of Dragons" ending would be awesome, the ancient dragons and their lightning fascinate me
I wonder if it would entail freeing Vyke in some way and liberating him from the frenzied flame
Yes saame. There so cool.

@@Beem0b0t maybe you could burn for vyke or free him from the frenzied flame in placidusax's arena. the same way you free yourself.

What got me was Dark Souls 3. The moment you see the cathedral and see the name of the location. Gave me goosebumps
Look up see flouting dragon and lightning everywhere...I don't want to be here anymore!
I went into the dragon lord chamber after leveling I was 120 anyways he is weakest not to destined death or anything else he is weak to Dragon lighting lol I two shotted him
Played on release, well before the guides were made so I had similar experiences, aswell as stupidly fighting Radahn before stormveil or Raya Lunaria
@@jennaherman3859 my god, you said a lot of things that are direcly contradicted by tons of items descriptions
Literally all the coolest boss battles in From Software's games are past their prime; it's part of what makes them so cool :)

well i mean i killed the dragon in one go. then again I was rocking bleed while beating the crap outta him with a mimic tear at the same time.

You don’t require a maiden, as those who choose the flame of frenzy make it without one

Since Maliketh is described as a half-brother to Marika in one of his remembrance descriptions, I think the statue of the girl surrounded by wolves that we find in his boss room is a young Marika, surrounded by her beastly kin.
Malekith was given to her by the greater will so it doesn't have to be marika
I think it likely has something to do with Albinaurics, like Latenna, and their bond with wolves.
does this mean that there is a beast whose power is equal or greater than Malikeths power??!?!?!?!??!

That makes sense because of that specific move placidusax throws out that cuts out all sound, making it a “calming” state before he blows it up
The reason why Alexander is in Farum Azula is because he probably jumped into the fire (Which is the same that happens to the Lord of Frenzy). He stated in Mt. Gelmir that he was looking for a stronger flame to temper his body, that flame being the giant's flame. He also can be summoned in the fire fiant fight which rëenforces the idea that he was trying to temper his body in the Giant's flame but ended up in Farum Azula.
Placidusax's boss room and the way he just floats there with the storm behind him until you approach is just 👌
He’s intimidating asf
Godfrey was an Elden Lord as well, and he was no demigod. You don't need to be a demigod to become an elden lord to the outer god you worship.
the reason the needle only worked in Placidusax's boss arena is because the needle was imperfect
The god that left Placidusax was unlikely to be an Outer God, since a God and Outer God are distinctly referred to as two different things.

It can't be the greater will cuz the greater will came with the elden beast and that was way after the dragons
@@hugo-pg5tv are we sure when the elden ring came into the lands between exactly ? When know it's long ago but we don't know in what age perhaps it's even older than the dragons
@@GILGAMESH069 the elden ring came with the elden beast

He was fairly challenging when I beat him
But he was the only boss I never got even slightly agitated fighting (until I got me hit by his lasers when he had 3 inches of health) super fun and visually stunning fight
In my solo run with no ashes he killed me like 30 times but I didn't even get mad because he's so fun
it's fun and very interesting to think that The Crumbling Farum Azula resides beyond time
Your videos are amazing, well written and brig a lot to the table.
The meteor that struck Farum was mostly the Elden Beast. Astel was sent later

And 2 years later with the DLC finally out, now we know the reason why Placidusax looks like that.
Seems to far into the crackpot realm of things
Well the elden ring came after placidusax
@@hugo-pg5tv No conformation of that and farum has a design for a primordial elden ring that's different from the current one more than likely the dragonlords
@@dakarai47 perhaps this is where the alchemy themes of Elden Ring comes in to place. I mean there are loads of connections to that stuff in the game, the Elden Ring being the Philosopher's Stone.
But yeah, the Elden Beast is the source of the Erdtree. And the Elden Beast *is* the Elden Ring.
I cant believe I never saw your video sooner this is such good lore coverage thank you
I’ve come to think that the meteor that struck farum azula was the one containing the elden beast, it would make sense based on the timeline they seem to be painting with it frozen in that moment since the rise of the erdtree
It’s a good thing we fight these bosses when they’re past their prime. There’s no way we’d beat them otherwise. Especially Dragonlord Placidsuax 🐉
I love listening to your videos while I’m at work
Thank you for this good sir. His theme and fight were just so epic. Def one of my favorite bosses in souls series

This is my absolute favorite bossfight in the game. I have grinded this dragon more than 200 times. I think the point in time faurum azula is when we reach it is in the future, since even if we kill maliketh, gurranq is still in the lands between, but if we do his quest first, then maliketh responds to recognising the player

God your videos are so well made!
Lol imagine going back in time and just having casual conversation with the friendly demigods before the shattering
Such amazing content, you deserve more attention. Well done
very well put-together video. subscribed
The way the farum azula timeline works is so freakin cool
You are the teacher who teaches her waterfowl dance the irony would be great
Seeing Placidusax with 5 Heads and unbroken body whould be a sight to behold.
i am completely obsessed with Elden Rings’ dragons
What may help is looking into the names. From does not make this easy at all so this may be a long post but it may help with lore. If you just google farum you'll come away thinking farum means "father" because of a dutch town name but the lands between prefer latin. Further searching will find mentions of "farum" in ecclesiastical and medieval latin works. That makes it much more difficult because most latin courses and online references teach classical latin
Digging and you'll find some people on reddit who think it means lighthouse in latin. It actually refers to a specific lighthouse. Farum is latin and comes from the greek pharos. Pharos is the island on which the lighthouse of alexandria once stood. The lighthouse was famously destroyed in an earthquake
Pharos may be directly related to pharoah in greek meaning "big/great house" and that word eventually became the greek word for egyptian royalty, but if it actually is then that has been lost to time
Azula comes from the latin word "blue"
So we may get a glimpse of farum azulas function through its name. It may not have just been a temple but rather a way to guide people. The blue could represent the lighthouse in the sky, or it could be seen as a guideway point for blue phantoms who are PCs sent to defend other PCs from invasion in game
As for placidusax it's important to remember latin words have many meanings. English likes to use much fewer definitions to convey a thought. Placidus means "gentle, calm, mild, peaceful". Placidusax is far from gentle or calm so I feel like he is named for the peaceful quality he created while elden lord
"But why use placidus and not pax/pacem to mean peace?" you might add.
It fits a major feature of the dragons, which is their stone appearance
Placidusax probably means "peaceful, calm stone". While we're at it Gransax means "tall, large, fully grown stone" and fortissax is "brave, powerful, strong stone"
Dragons names appear to be referencing their qualities. Placidusax was probably an elden lord who resided over an era without much war
Personally I feel that because of his name, his powers, and the name of farum azula and the function of the structure it was based on that it may have been a guide and placidusax may have used his powers to light the way down below.
Great video! Keep up the great work!
my assumption is that Farum Azula was destroyed by the Elden Beast arriving via meteor, and that same impact is what sent the eternal cities underground
This was one of the coolest bosses ever.
The intro to this boss fight still gives me goosebumps , absolute masterpiece
But I believe it's flawed on two points:
The god that abandoned Placidusax is more likely the vessel for the Elden ring made god and then fled for an unknown reason.
And like always with these games, I wonder if the truth lies somewhere in between...
it's kind of odd that so many people talk about theorizing who the storm lord is, but i'm pretty sure we find him, or at least the ashes of him when you go back to the first area of the game and enter the previously closed door beside the church we start in
Imagine, if Placidusax had Dialogue... boy would he have some stories to tell
SO MANY times I wish we could have had actual conversations.

You can see placidusax's dead body fossilized in farum azula in the side of a cliff. The only time you go back in time is when you fight him
By far my favourite boss in the game, it’s such a spectacle and his last stand laser attack is just unbelievably fucking awesome.
We fight Placidusax at his absolute weakest … imagine him in his prime.
Love your content sir!

Theory: a Forgotten warrior had fought Placidusax and managed to sever 2 of his heads. A “Nameless King” if you would
Okay, this is a bit of unorganized rambling, but hopefully someone likes at least some of the ideas here.
So in my opinion, the War against the Ancient Dragons directly preceded the events leading to the shattering.
Maliketh's presence in Farum Azula is not for no reason. He was Marika's shadowbound beast, and his presence there to me implied either (or both) of the following
1. He was there to be kept "on ice" for when Marika needed something deader than dead OR
Ultimately, with the Greater Will fled, and the Dragonlord and Maliketh both in hiding, a leaderless Leyndell turned to sources of guidance and leadership that would have been heretical during the Order's zenith-- an Omen King, and the Dragon Cult.
if we were to "fight" Placidusax at his full power (all heads, not looking like moldy bread, etc.) it would probably be impossible
Our ability as a species to imagine such things gives me hope. We are truly the children of our ancestors
The -sax suffix indicates that he, like many dragons, plays saxophone in his spare time.
I feel like we may have more than one large dlc because of how vast elden ring and it's lore is
