- Felix Contreras | April 28, 2017 - In many ways, the traditions of flamenco and jazz could not be further apart, but in the hands of a few Spanish jazz musicians, these two worlds commingle and find common ground. Antonio Lizana is one such musician, both a saxophonist and vocalist with one foot firmly planted in each tradition. As a vocalist he has mastered the Moorish, note-bending improvisations that make flamenco singing so beguiling, while the fluidity of ideas he expresses as a saxophonist place him in the time-honored tradition of composing while playing.
The magic of Lizana's performance behind Bob Boilen's desk happens when the two musical worlds wrap around each other, like helical strands of sonic DNA. One is no greater than the other - perfect complements that point to a common African root.

Tiny Desk Concerts never cease to amaze me at the quality and diversity of acts.
Bob Boilen is one of the greatest curators of music on the face of the planet, and the team he has around him that document these artists are the best in the business. Tiny Desk Concerts have been the source of my favorite performances of many a song by artists that I love, and the start of many obsessions when I discover new artists. There are many other fantastic music series out there, Mahogony Sessions, Sideshow Alley, Sofar, Le HibOO to name a few off the top of my head, but in my mind Tiny Desk holds a special place alone.

Just moved to Granada, Spain, and saw that this guy is performing for free at the Museo Caja Granada tonight. Research led me to this video, and I am so excited now to see his show. I LOVE flamenco, and am fascinated by his modern, fresh take.
i had the luck of seeing a concert of this great artist in my town in seville, less than 30 assistants, open air, a great experience. i cant believe how underrated he is

Toured Spain many years ago. Great audiences, warm and generous, even if I thought we didn’t play great they still wanted 3 or 4 encores. Fascinating country, but I could never wrap my mind around flamenco, crazy stuff, in a good way.

I almost didn't watch because I thought it was going to be some BS musica jazz. But this performance is so pure, passionate, and precise. It is absolutely genius, even if it is foreign to your ears, it quickly becomes a mind trip, which you can feel even in the dulled down corners of your soul. Enjoy. Love . Peace.
