      The sad thing is that he used to be a normal kid whose father worked in an embassy. The beginning of the episode implies that they've moved to Washington DC not much earlier, though, and that he still felt like he didn't fit in. The villain played on this feeling, falsely promising him to make his problems disappear.

    • @Disneyfan82
      @Disneyfan82 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Sad, but true. That's what viewers need to understand and that's why it's important for parents to sit down and talk with their kids about these bad situations and why they should say NO to drugs. But also if someone they know and love is in trouble, they should tell an adult they trust, explaining the difference between telling and tattling, especially when their life is in danger.

    All these people in the comments saying it's too dark for a kids show, need to shut up. This is showing kids the dangers of drugs, you're never too young to learn about stuff like this. Just think about the kids with parents who do stuff like this on a daily basis. They see it everyday, and already know what it does and how it affects people, why shouldn't other kids learn about it??? This is a topic that should never be kept from kids. Teach them at a young age, instead of waiting till their older, because it might be too late to persuade them at all.

      Well, it's too late now. So how can you see a mild death on a children's show? I already know about illegal drugs before this show's episode (I never grew up with it but I'm getting interested at it).
      And called it dark. Well, not every story is all about cupcakes and rainbows you know. It's all about how we live in a world where evil lurked around us.
      Seeing cartoons with guns and smoking. Does kids turned them into a thug or something? Nope. Kids are no thugs! It's purpose was used for entertainment and life lessons. We know some today kids stuff have no purpose at all.

    • @RenegadeX28
      @RenegadeX28 5 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      It's definitely dark compared to what cartoons are nowadays. Cartoons and family shows won't even dare touch these subjects anymore because parents would be like 'ZOMG KIDS SHOULDNT WATCH THIS STUFF". When I watched this episode back then, it definitely worked...drugs are something I never touched because for a good chunk of my childhood ...I remembered that BLISS episode. I was eight when I saw this, and boy did I never forget it.
    I never thought much of Captain Planet as a kid, but whatever else you might want to say about it, I think it REALLY handled this subject right. The entire episode really stuck with me, and this scene burned itself into my brain.
    (Some of the commenters are saying stuff like "90s kids were tough" or "90s cartoons weren't afraid to show dark stuff". They're really not correct ---- one of the reasons this scene was so effective was BECAUSE it was so unusual. Characters almost never died in kids' shows, let alone right on screen. So when it happened, it sure got your attention.)
    We all laugh when we look back at most of those anti-drug PSAs from the '80s and '90s, but unlike those, this really showed how being addicted to drugs could affect you physically and mentally. What stuck with me more than anything else was how much physical agony Boris and Linka were in. The direction and the voice acting did an excellent job conveying that. But in particular I never forgot the last scene, where they're reassuring Linka that eventually the pain will subside, and she replies that the pain isn't as bad as the pain of losing her cousin.
    Ouch.

    All the people saying stuff like "cartoons weren't scared to be dark/violent back then" have some selective-ass memory. Moments like these are memorable BECAUSE it was so rare for cartoons to actually depict death. I mean jeez, a whole generation of imported cartoons got censored to the point where you couldn't even say the words "die" or "kill." Spider-Man couldn't throw a punch, and every rando in NYC had a laser gun. Cartoons were HEAVILY censored during this period.
    Basically, if you honestly believe that '90s cartoons were more violent, then you probably haven't WATCHED a cartoon of any sort since the '90s.

      @@lyricalfriendsranzzyandpla4388 the cartoons nowadays geared towards the same age group as Captain Planet tend to be more violent (ex. Spider-Man cartoon geared toward the same age group). While no drugs are shown violent content that belongs in an R rated movie are shown including blood in some cartoons. Drugs were shown back then (or a reference to them) but with a goal of delivering a message to the audience regarding the detrimental effects towards the user. On that Captain Planet episode such allusion is made with the fictional drug “blitz” and the addiction acquired by one of the planeteers is shown and the death of one of her family members in order to show the end game of drug addiction.

      I believe the mentioned in the episode that specific drug "Bliss" builds a tolerance unusually quick so they had to make higher and higher doses to get their high. Though the guy chugging half the bottle was a bit excessive he'd already been well past the point were a single pill could sate him.
