I’m a guy who went from a 5’6 120lbs high school-college XC-track runner to 200lb bodybuilder/powerlifter in my 20’s to early 30’s and now a 150lb distance runner at 37. For me it was fun to push my body beyond what I thought was possible for myself in both aspects, but at the end of the day all roads lead back to running for me. There’s just something about that runners high. The discipline required on the mental/physical side and entering a pain cave that you have to stay in for extended periods that will test your will on a level I’ve yet to find in anything else I’ve done in athletics. I still weight train now but not for size or power but rather for the overall health of my muscles and joints and to help my body perform more efficiently and effectively in my endurance endeavors. I’m honored to have met Nick on the starting line in Buffalo last year and I hope one day to meet him on the starting line of another race, because watching first hand what he was able to accomplish in the endurance world in such a short time frame was truly inspiring and made me hungrier than ever!
100% agree with you that all roads lead back to running, that's what's happened to me as well. But I have to let you know that there is one other exercise that competes with running in the ability to enter a pain cave and stay in it for extended periods of time, that's rowing. Im excited to hear the podcast with Thomas. My go-to preworkout meal is either a well balanced breakfast with quick carb before my workout or i will mix BPN whey protein into 0% fage and top it with fruits, granola and honey!! SO good!!!
over the last 2 years of "serious" running/marathons, I have definitely lost muscle mass on my upper body. i attribute it to primarily not making enough time to sufficiently weight train. As well as not consuming enough protein (heavy carb diet while in a training block). this winter i really want to focus on strength/size and put running on the back burner. Im gonna max at 20 miles a week (which is super low for me) and do more speed work rather than easy slow miles, as well as get back into the gym. I dont expect to put on massive amounts of weight/muscle but would just be content with stalling muscle loss come next spring when i really up the running again.

Hey Nick. You always post awesome and educational content keep it up! I have a question. Can't you get the same nutritionist results without taking all those laboratory supplements and eating high-nutrition foods such as: eggs, broccoli, oats ect..?
I's worth considering the opposite - If running(aerobic training) really helps improving weight lifting(anaerobic training), will these big muscles help improving running performance in some way in return?
Yes. Pure Strength in the lower limbs will increase the explosive power that you exert when your foot pushes against the ground. On the other hand if you train muscle resistance in the gym, you will handle the longer distances better
Great video. Good explainers without preaching or lecturing. Good idea putting the blood work out there. Should make that a regular thing to show the supps are tested and substance free.
Nick you can’t get rid of the Birthday cake Whey. I mixed it with oatmeal cookie and it taste like a dunkaroo dipped in the birthday cake icing. It’s too good! Give it a try.
So, as a former infantry dude would you consider a hybrid athlete to be the ideal athlete type for an infantryman? Or should muscular endurance be the target?
Very interesting. I always found eating enough to be an issue. I focused on my protein and fats to ensure that even if calories were not ideal, I wouldn't lose to much muscle. Upping carbs can help, but my job wouldn't allow frequent feedings so it just left me with low blood sugar if I couldn't get a meal in. Focusing on protein and fat first and carbs after to fill in the gaps helped me. Albeit, I doubt I would have had the reserves to run a marathon.
From what ive seen, the argument is not that it burns muscle, but that if youre both running and building muscle, your body is not going to prioritize building as much muscle as it could if you were just lifting alone.
The answer is it depends… in the end its really hard to train and improve 2 different domains concurrently (there are plenty of studies that show this). Can you run and lift at the same time? Yes, is it optimal, not likely.
@@DrRussell the reality is that it's all gonna come down to: how much muscle you are starting your program with and how much mileage you're putting in.
He might be. But my guess is he ain't. He has his own supplements so he can create anything he wants to gain muscle. Sense he's in off season he putting on gains. When he was training for his marathon he lost some muscle but he maintained most of it. U just have to know how the body works. And he eats a ton of protein. But again that's just my opinion doesn't mean it's right.

Thought your testosterone would be higher. But it works and is good to know. Just turned sixty and mine was below 200. Was referred to a urologist and was put on Androgel. Every few months my test doubled until last month it was 1648. Although I didn't feel any different from when it was 720. Urologist said I needed to get it back down and was considering putting me on the testosterone pill after it came down to normal levels.

Hey Nick. You always post awesome and educational content keep it up! I have a question. Can't you get the same nutritionist results without taking all those laboratory supplements and eating high-nutrition foods such as: eggs, broccoli, oats ect..?
I ran 1,300 miles so far this year and put 10 pounds onto my frame!
Do his ranger prep program it’s killer
@@snideraustin45 Thanks. I'll look into it.
Have you never thought of competing in CrossFit? Seems like your new training directly correlates with it.
Nice looks huge!!
Nick looking saucey. Those traps don't lie.
Good video though.
Keep up the good work, this is my wife's account. My name's Triston, keep up the hard work and effort!
Epic pre-workout meal there 🔥💪😋🥣🍯
Thanks, great video, great information, 🇵🇹💪
From what ive seen, the argument is not that it burns muscle, but that if youre both running and building muscle, your body is not going to prioritize building as much muscle as it could if you were just lifting alone.
drone shot in the beginning went federal
someone call the cops
The answer is it depends… in the end its really hard to train and improve 2 different domains concurrently (there are plenty of studies that show this). Can you run and lift at the same time? Yes, is it optimal, not likely.
That’s right, while both are beneficial it’s better to cycle them
When roids are in play nothing burns muscle, this should be a key point in the topic, i don't think Nick abuses them but he certainly is on something.
But who cares?
@@jameshowlett4314 all of us natties who are trying to find good advice
@@DrRussell the reality is that it's all gonna come down to: how much muscle you are starting your program with and how much mileage you're putting in.
Depends on the interference effect really. Running a few miles vs long distance training makes a difference.
He might be. But my guess is he ain't. He has his own supplements so he can create anything he wants to gain muscle. Sense he's in off season he putting on gains. When he was training for his marathon he lost some muscle but he maintained most of it. U just have to know how the body works. And he eats a ton of protein. But again that's just my opinion doesn't mean it's right.
love this content!!!
Hey man my names Sam, big ups from the uk 🇬🇧 question: Would really like to know how you compensate or adjust to recorded calorie exertion on your smart watch? It’s pretty common they aren’t exactly 100% accurate and a couple hundred calories difference could really alter the timescale it takes to achieve your goals whether that’s building or cutting! Keep up the sick videos man you’re a legend!
I can see Coach Greg making a response video from this... AGAIN!!
I do LISS cardio, incline 14 at 3.8mph on the treadmill for one hour everyday post workout. No I don’t think I’ve been growing but it all just comes down to diet 100%.
That's not cardio. That's lazy body builder mamby pamby whatever. At a min put it on 5mph and at least slow jog.
None of this holding onto the treadmill BS.
I'm 6'6 275 10% and run before and after weights.
I too used to do the bodybuilder so called cardio. Its all bullshit. Crank it up to 12-10min mile pace then take it from there.
@@morelife6508 you're ignorant for thinking I hold onto it, you trained wrong and your brain made assumptions. Don't need to run for good endurance, I still have a sub 6 minute mile and can run at a 10-12 min pr mile pass for 1.5-2 hours. Not changing my regiment if I don't need to. Test levels are above 700, blood is on point and doctor assumed I was an athlete due to low heart rate and hence EKG came out perfect. I've been maintaining for 3 years after doing 6 of bulking and cutting and I do cardio for my health and I look fucking sick year round
The guys over at Mind Pump recently talked about weight lifting belts. You obviously use one so I'm wondering your theory behind it.
@ Nick B .. Where can I go to learn the proper running form ..
Juiced out of his mind
Probably less than you think. Who cares anyway, you probably drink alcohol which is far worse and completely pointless
Wrong
What's that t-shirt? It's sick.
bro how do you get those smooth running shots they look amazing!
Can you talk about meal timing, running and lifting timing? I can space my runs too far out from lifts due to a busy schedule. Any tips?
Running just seems to strip muscle from my legs which feels horrible as leg training is very hard. Im only talking about 5k runs once or twice a week. Ever since I stopped running I've gained inches in thickness around my legs.
Those leg day shorts are a vibe 😂 What brand are they!?
