He had a back injury that almost left him paralyzed in 1965. As a result he was on pain killers, and became addicted to them. I believe it was 78 when he kicked them, but lived with pain for years after.
I met him when I was a teen. I was in Bye Bye Birdie at the Long Beach Municiple auditorium in Long Beach ..way back when...I was sitting with Del Moore , one of Jerry's friends and he called Jerry at home early in the morning. Jerry's kids answered the phone first and then got their dad and Del said. I have a gal that wants to meet you. Jerry got on the phone and was very kind to talk with me.We only talked a minute but then I got to meet him in person during the run of show too. Great man!
Just when you think it is impossible to be any more impressed with Mr.Lewis ...you see an interview like this! I drove JL's immaculate white w/ red leather 19'79 custom Seville and parked it in his garage next to his Rolls Royce... while I worked at the Cadillac Dealership in Las Vegas over 20 years ago! The word "legend" is over used...but when speaking of Jerry Lewis or Frank Sinatra you really have to move up to the next word 'ICON'! God Bless Jerry Lewis!
I've always thought of Lewis as a genius (comedic and otherwise)... but after watching a bunch of these segments, the only adjective I can come up with, in summation, is "generous."
