    I've always had the notion that Kelly is a savant of human movement & anatomy. He was 10 years a head of the mobility movement and myofacia release techniques that you see everywhere now.

    Been searching my whole life for this Kelly's information. It almost feels like I've been starved of this knowledge. Have no idea why this isn't taught at school...
    The mainstream fitness industry casts a thick veil made up of regurgitated information on how to "look good" in a an unstable, energy leaking body. It is clear to me that modern cultural values have largely ignored the importance of this knowledge. It's been a long journey sifting through oceans of misinformation, plenty of injuries through sports and life. Been through some really negative thinking cycles and had lost a lot of confidence in my body to do things like participate in sports or just do everyday things.
    I've grown up now and am grateful I have access to leading thinkers like Kelly to learn from. I just bought his book 'The Supple Leopard' last week and am looking forward to using both his TH-cam videos and writings as a reference to help heal and perform maintenance on my body-schema.
    Thank you Kelly, you have no idea how much your words mean to me.

    Kelly is an absolute visionary! Only the second person I have ever heard use the word "Tensegrity" to describe the human body. A brilliant thinker and a gift to the word of human movement. Please post all videos of this workshop or provide info on how to get the full recording. Thanks

    This sounds like it is based on the principles of The Feldenkrais Method but he's taken it in his own direction with his own wisdom. That's a great idea, the more people teach mobility, maybe more people will begin to practice mobility. Nice work!

    For all of you saying "I wish this was taught in PE".
    I'm a middle school PE teacher and this IS my curriculum. My students ALSO play dodgeball because it is super fun but every single student in my class is taught all these principles and I teach 250+ kids a year. We're out there trust me. in fact, I rewrote my standards to include the language of 1 joint rule, 4 step brace sequence, and the laws of torque specifically.

  • @orangeiceice12
    @orangeiceice12 10 ปีที่แล้ว +15

    Kelly Starrett should check out Wing Chun... the principles he teaches gave me the tools to understand the design language behind different martial arts and movement systems. There's a grid of possible movement patterns, and choosing to focus on this is choosing not to focus on that. Boxing chooses to internally rotate the hip joint through the heel and knee to generate torque to fire very powerful shots. Wing Chun chooses to keep feet neutral, spine stabilized, elbows in, and blocks with external rotation of the shoulder joint (palm upwards and flat in tan sau, fingers vertical and pulling towards you in pak sau) in order to maximize stability, compactness, and central/forward focus, and ensure that all pressure put on a punch or block is born by the spine and not the shoulder joint.
    Some design principles are universal; for example, boxers, wrestlers, wing chun fighters, are all compact in their own way. Some design principles are purposeful choices that preclude other choices and imply other ones. For example, the Wing Chun stability/foward-focus principles mean that I can't throw a boxing hook. Or, on the other hand, if someone puts pressure on my forward hand in a neutral Wu Sau position, that's fine, I face it with my spine. But, if they put pressure to the side, my hand rolls in, pinkie pointing upwards, shoulder joint interally rotated into Bong Sau, ensuring that their pressure remains born by my spine and not by the shoulder joint.
    It's like discovering the Golden Ratio in everything from the nautilus to the Milky Way. It reinforces the fact that there can never be a perfect martial art, just an optimal compromise.

    If you tweak your back that is not a CNS injury. I may have misunderstood Kelly and PLEASE disregard this comment if I did, as I watched it over and over and that is what I think he said. A CNS injury is going to result in a shutdown of communication from the CNS to the rest of the body; of course, depending on the level of the injury will dictate the level of a shutdown. The CNS is working WELL if you are in discomfort after tweaking your back because it's telling you that something is not going well. It feeds you back information to make a change so that things can come back to harmony or homeostasis. That is the beauty of a healthy CNS.

    A schema for movement should apply to all people, especially elite athletes because of their mastery of the schema (e.g. the powerlifter organizing spinal position before a deadlift). Maybe sprinters have slight external rotation because they adhere to the schema. They "twist" their toes into the ground. They are creating torque in an open system. Also, a sprinter's knee does not pass his hip when accelerating, which is when external rotation is most pronounced.

    The full webinar is over on creativeLIVE under "Maintaining Your Body Kelly Starrett". Two other thinkers exploring bio-tensegrity in detail are Stephen Braybrook (see @BraybrookSJ) and Phil Earnhardt (see @floatingbones). I'm still uncertain of how it relates to practical challenges in the gym but an intriguing idea for sure.

    Dr. Starrett,
    I use a number of your principles coupled with some Thomas Meyer, Grey Cook, and others in my chiropractic practice. I often struggle with "diagnoses" because once I get someone in the office and past their original injury, they "get it" and come back whenever they need new advice or notice that something "just isn't right." Often, they begin catching problems and presenting to my office prior to having a "diagnosable" injury. Are there overfiring/underfiring diagnoses that you use with your patients?

    The one thing I don't get - Look at all of the top olympic weightlifters, their snatch and clean catch, full squat position is always "toes out".

    • @boxxer221
      @boxxer221 10 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The closer you have your feet in the squat position the more you are allowed to turn out the feet as it's easier to create torque, and top olympic weightlifters are also very efficient at creating that torque. If you look at top powerlifters with their wide stance their feet are virtually pointed straight forward as they cant create that torque with a wide stance and toes out.

      @TotalathletictherapyJAL 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Take the basic principles out of it an many of the other parts will come naturally to you. Work on your posture and using your glutes to fire and created external rotation of you hips which will help put your pelvis in the correct place as well as rotate your legs to a neutral position and begin recreating your arch. All with a simple butt squeeze. From there work on holding tension at 20% all day long in both your butt and abs to keep upright and in good position. Focus on this while standing and when you sit down and get up and you will already be setting yourself up for better movement.

    This guy would be a lot more popular if he spoke in a simpler language. He keeps using all these big, generalized pseudo-intellectual terms without explaining them.

    • @Kavemaster
      @Kavemaster 9 ปีที่แล้ว +24

      +nathonas
      that's ridiculous. if you want to talk about something you must use the appropriate terms. If we were talking about engines. We might need to say something about a "Camshaft". Pissy folks who dont want to learn anything might furrow their brows at the term "camshaft" and whine, "why dont we call it a rod wit egg shaped bumps on it". need i say more?
      Kstarr is wildly popular. And unapologetic about using "big fancy words" like flexion, extension, tension, shear, dorsiflexion etc. you need to know these things to be able to talk about them. Watch enough MobilityWOD Vids and you'll be a pro at using those "generalized pseudo-intellectual terms"

    • @Fintdoh
      @Fintdoh 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +nathonas I agree enirely. I think he's very self-regarding. He likes to blend this low-key bro thing with totally unnecessary jargon. If you cant explain something simply you dont understand it well enough.

      +nathonas Lmfao. "Pseudo-intellectual terms". Buddy, pick up a basic anatomy book and within the first couple chapters they will have covered basic movement terminology. It's not "pseudo-intellectual", or even that intellectual. It's actually basic as hell.

    I cringe when I hear people say this guy is the "real deal". Just like any good snake oil salesman, he uses a lot of big words (in this case a lot of medical terminology). So the immediate natural reaction is "Wow he's a genius!". But if you actually analyze what he says it's largely "fluff "(aka b.s.). He's great at turning a very minor point into a long, overly technical, grandiose speech . Great salesman for sure. People have been eating this stuff up for hundreds of years and this year is no different.
