@@ZappaGetSlappa I am a zoomer who joined during that late tag 2 and Tekken 7 stages of popularity, but I did to have and play every Tekken before hand and because I don't have a nostalgic bias towards them, all the tekkens before 5 have aged pretty poorly lmao
@@ZappaGetSlappa gameplay is very stiff and slow, everything is way too floatly. The models and sound design are incredibly dated, voices constantly chip or feel out of tune with the world they are in, the endings..oh god they so awkward. And hot take: the OSTs aren't that iconic or good compared to other fighting games around that era

The gameplay and roster are the best in the series and until 8 was the most graphically impressive, but there obviously is lesser things in it that aren't as good. But it sure as hell is better than the first 6 Tekken games and the fact it survived as long it did and is still mainstream and the rest aren't says all you need to know

I was 20 in 2001 when I got a PS2 and Tekken Tag Tournament. It was mind blowing for me. This was the generation when home consoles began to surpass arcades. I was the first one my circle of friends that got a PS2 and we all loved TTT. There were, like, 10 of us and we were all in awe over the graphics. It was the game that was the showcase of the PS2, for us. So much that we all got together at one of our friend’s house (the one whose parents were around the least 😂) I brought my PS2 and TTT and we’d drink and play TTT all night. Some of us weren’t even fans of fighting games and still everyone wanted to play.
What you just described is what I miss most about gaming. The communal aspect where all of your friends would get together in one place and just play. Sure, we have online but it’s just not the same.
One of the things I find interesting about Tag 1 is that is kind of the birth of Lee as we know him today. Prior to Lee getting his Hitman stance in Tag 1, he was pretty much just a moveset clone of Law with a smidge of Paul and Kazuya.
Yup that hit man stance was a great addition to his move set! Also that infinite leg kick combo!

Yea Lee felt.distinct in this although he shared some moves with law and kazuya....it upgraded the tekken 2 characters majorly since t3 was such a major game changer
I fucking love Tag’s ost, Both Arcade and PS2 versions. Ogre’s theme, Jin’s, Character Select, Xiaoyu, Unknown, the Staff Roll too. It’s such a special game man. There’s just something about it that other games don’t have and not even Tag 2 has it. I love it

This was the game where Korean Backdashing , haha step , and wave dashing was discovered and the Koreans (Seok) showed it to the world . The first legend of Tekken is Jang Iksu, who was Arguably the best Mishima player. This was really early in the internet days with regards to videos and forums. It was really an amazing time in fighting game history.

The graphics on the PS2 version are crazy. PS2 in general was such a massive upgrade from the PS1.
The only two things that you forgot to mention, the fact that this game has all of the characters from Tekken 1, 2, and 3, so you can play the original Tekken 1 and 2 roster characters in Tekken 3 gameplay, and the other thing is that with the pair play mode you could also play co-op. So two players could just be on a team and play arcade
I remember when the second Tag Tournament came out and many were psyched and freaking out over Jun returning in that game, and that eventually led to her returning for realsies in Tekken 8. In retrospect, I wonder if 2000's Tekken players did the same over Kazuya returning in Tag 1 which to his return for realsies in Tekken 4.
Oh yeah we did. I'm a lifetime Kaz main, and was hyped as hell when he returned for TTT and especially T4. It helped that he was top tier (well, A tier in T4) in both games despite having a limited move set, and despite having WGF nerfed in 4. He also had a soft counter to Jin's JFLS bullshit, which made him one of the strongest matchups for Jin (who was god tier in T4).

yeah and the tag from Kazuya to Devil TRANSFORMATION was nice (cuz they were still 2 separate characters). he was the only character that could technically "solo" their opponent besides Unknown in the final stage.

Tekken Tag HD on PS3 was also great for us Europeans since we could finally play it in 60Hz instead of original PS2 version that was 50Hz.
Tag 1 is still my FAVOURITE Tekken game to this day
Tekken Tag Tournament was the game where if I saw it in an arcade, there was a fairly good chance that was going to be the only game I play there.
The soundtrack is godlike! Especially Xiaoyu's theme and Ogre's theme. I was a bit thrown off by the tag mechanic, but I still had so much fun playing it, both alone and with friends. A solid entry in the series.
Tag 1 is also what i consider to be the point where the series started to get serious with it's competitive scene.
Also one buggy issue with Tag 1 is that it has P2 advantage. As when performing combos on P2 side it would tag you in closer to the opponent and allow you to have bigger combos.

@@21Handguns T3 did have a scene but it's balance is just so hilariously nutty. Which is why Tag 1 is a lot more popular. (Despite it having some ridiculous stuff itself)

Dude, you can't imagine how much I was hyped and loved this game. I was so much a fan of the Tekken franchise by this point and when I saw the first video of the game I couldn't believe how cool it looked. Made me REALLY want a PS2.
Namco basically said hey remember how Tekken 3 blew everyone’s mind. We are going to take that and flip it on it’s head with better gameplay and score with more techno sounds.
Tekken Tag has always been my favorite. The tag combos, the big roster, the timing. Everything about it has been perfection. As a poor kid growing up, the arcades were awesome but expensive so fighting games were the way to stretch your quarters. I was unstoppable at this game. Had people flocking around me to watch others fight me til no one would fight me anymore. Loved this game so much. I really hope they make another Tag game soon or add it as a game feature.
Same. Throw in 50p in the arcade cabinet, and no one could take me off until I had enough, and we had to leave. I had fun for hours.

The music in this game is golden.
The beginning of Tekken’s golden age, which imo is the entire PS2 era 😍. So many nostalgic memories of playing this on my PS2 back in the day, until the game unfortunately stopped working 😢. Thank goodness for the HD version on PS3 though, which I still have to this day 😁👍

I grew up playing Tekken Tag and still love it till this day.
Well in my country (Philippines) the Arcade Version of TTT is much more popular than the PS2 back in the days. When you went to any mall with arcade you can always see a bunch of people flocking in the TTT Arcade cabinet. It's common to see people with atleast 10 win streak. I miss those times, now arcade centers are literally dead.

I think the limitations to the extra content in Tekken Tag 1 had to do with it being put on a CD versus DVD. If it was put on DVD on launch, you would see incredible endings vice the ones you have on this except for Unknown. This game is still incredible and I revisit it every once in awhile…including the arcade version
4:30 Once again, tag juggles remove all the red health that can be regenerated. When the offscreen character has rage, they juggle with 30% more damage.
Some tag juggles do half health ie: Michelle df 3+4 TAG Julia uf4, FC1, df4~3, df4~2, bf N 2
I've said this in the past, but I'll say it again. Max, I love hearing you speak at length and in depth about games. You have a way of making your enjoyment and passion almost tangible when you put your thoughts and opinions into words, and to me, it especially comes through when you do these Legacy series. This is what I keep on coming back for. Rock on, dood!
I remember growing up as a kid and playing little house tournaments with my cousins using the multitap box for 4players to play together shit was SICK
dual development of ps2 and DC with SolCal, and TT2, 2 platforms that couldn't be more different when you're trying to get the most out of them....how hard was Namco working back then.
Honestly the arcade ending theme of tag 1 even with how funny it is might be top 5 songs in the series.
As someone who's not only tekken life but gaming life in general started with Ps2 tag 1. This video is so nostalgic for me
I got three brothers, so the whole multitap tag battle was our ultimate 2v2 experience! We also had Timesplitters and Crash Bash, but those were free-for-all for the most part, so teaming up in TTT was something exhilarating.

I got back from the gym and i only have two Tekken themes on my playlist. One is Jin Kazama from Tekken 3 arcade, and the other is Ogre from Tekken Tag, the the orchestra one. Amazing

TTT is peak out of the classics & deserves similar praise to the level T3 & T2 get. Everything was on point and the game still holds up to this day
Tag 1 is my favorite entry in the series. I got the game with my PS2 and spent hundreds upon hundreds of hours playing it. I love this game so much

This game holds a special place in my heart. This game was my introduction into competitive gaming. Playing in arcade tournaments, bowling alleys, bingo halls, and apartment rec centers while lugging around tables, CRT TVs, and ps2's were some of my fondest memories.
Tekken Tag blew my mind as a kid. Didn’t think graphics could get any better. Phenomenal achievement.
9:48 The only CG ending in Tekken Tag Tournament is Unknown's ending, but yes the rest are in-game renders.
I really like that ending because Unknown's appearance and her eyes make you question if this really is Jun Kazama, or a different person like what was mentioned in art books about Unknown's early creation. I think it mentioned she was originally going to be Jun Kazama's sister. Then they left it unanswered when the game released, and then Tekken Tag Tournament 2 canonized it that Unknown is Jun Kazama. I really wish it could have been a sister of Jun and have her own unique move set instead of being another character model with random character's move list similar to Mokujin.
I still love the look and atmosphere of TTT1. My only gripe with the PS2 version is that it came on a CD, or the black/blue disc. Usually I find that when the PS2's laser starts to break down and give disc read errors, CD games are the first to go, and both TTT1 and MvC2 end up as casualties until you can fix the issue. If the game had released on DVD, I would have spent much more time with it.
So this explains why my disc eventually stopped working. I thought it was a disc problem.

And DOA2 was never supposed to be on PS2. Someone on the development team secretly ported the game to the PS2.
You are so right about the OST. I stumbled across it not too long ago and it was one of the biggest nostalgia hits my brain has ever had. I was instantly transported back to back to 2000 with memories of playing nothing but this on my friends brand new PS2. The Bouncer saw no play.
busted my ps2 out for the first time in years last night- my roommate and i were running up tekken tag for hours, and absolutely geeking to the soundtrack. personal fav track is the eddy stage.
awesome to see so much love thrown at tag 1. As kids, my brother and I had a ps2 and this was the only dedicated fighting game we ever had for it growing up.
I remember working at the local movie theater in my neighborhood and Tekken Tag Tournament being there. I remember that it looked like Tekken 3 with tag mechanics. But when I finally purchased the PS2 version I was like "did I buy the sequel?".
Tag 1 was so much fun cuz we would run all sorts or tournament style nights just off the name alone. Amazing game
I just finished a playthrough of this very very recently. There is actually 1 CG ending in the 38 endings, which is Unknown's. Still very felt that all of the others play the same music and are so short/simple. But some are a treat!
I might’ve started with Tekken 4 last year but Tag is what got my entire friend group into Tekken when I brought my PS2 to college. We’ve all been playing 7 for the past few months since then but I’ll always be nostalgic for Tag for that alone, doesn’t matter if I wasn’t even born yet when it came out.
The first time I've ever played Tekken Tag was when I was 9 years old. I was on a field trip for Arabic class (my class got good grades on an exam so our teacher treated us to a day out) and I found an arcade machine, it was like getting a glimpse of the future. By that point, it was several months out before the PS2 launch and it was quite an experience. I eventually played it on PS2 until '04 since Tekken 4 left me somewhat cold.
This game made me fall in love with the Changs even more ❤️ Such amazing characters
Tekken tag never gets enough love. Had the original TTT and I absolutely loved TTT2 Wii U edition with the included DLC and modes like Tekken Ball, and have been waiting all this time for TTT3. But alas, I doubt Namco will ever do this now that we arrived at Tekken 8, past a decade since the last one, with no hint of a Tekken Tag Tournament 3 in the wings.
Usually they do a Tekken Tag game after they do three mainline games and if anything is to go by maybe after Tekken 9 we might eventually get Tekken Tag 3 in the future, you have to remember Tekken Tag 1 came out after the first three games and Tag 2 came out after Tekkens 4, 5 and 6

Man I love Tekken tag tournament as a kid back then! After playing alot of Tekken 3, it got even better! Playing the heck out of Tag tournament on Ps2 before going to school everyday! I wish I could back but very excited to play Tekken 8! Only a week away!

I remember this being the first game in the series that i played competitively. This game is so fun when it was in the arcades.
I can clearly remember being absolutely bummed about the fact that the round ends when only one player dies, as opposed to other tag games like marvel vs. games where you need to KO both characters to win the round.
This was the first game I rented when I got my PS2 that year, played the hell out of it and thought the graphics couldn't get any better. My mind was BLOWN! I remember picking up Tekken Hybrid randomly at a Best Buy and finding out there was an HD version of the game and played the hell out of that like I did with the PS2 version. The soundtrack is just godlike to say the least, with King, Xiayou, Yoshimitsu, and Eddy's tracks my favorites.
I played countless hours if tekken tag all the way from when it came out to today. This is by far my favorite tekken game. The music was so great. Unbelievably nostalgic to see it here.
...just realised the intro to Tekken 8 has references to TTT with the editing to the intro the boys did on this. Wow.
Tekken tag was THE Tekken game of choice. With every house expected to have a copy, four controllers and a multi-tap. It actually became a problem, as although many of us gave 4 a chance, we still found ourselves needing to be weaned off Tag to keep up and git good with 5 when it dropped.
I still play TTT 1 to this day. Just too good, I attended my first Evo in 2000 and had so many fond memories in my local Arcade.
This is one of my favourite fighting games. It took all that made 3 great and improved upon it. I am still coming back to it from time to time. The OST is peak tekken and I love it
I just loved that Tag brought back all the characters to make a wild roster.
For me, a personal favourite. I didn't know it was available until 2 years later along with Resident Evil: Code Veronica when my friend let me lend them for a week or so.

Omg!!! Tag 1 was my game. I got my friend who is not into fighters to buy it on launch day. I didn't have a console at the time. Eventually I would buy it off my friend and buy my own console with my first credit card. The graphics were ahead of its time. It took Namco only 10 months to make. The sick thing is, you could play 1 Vs 1 to simulate Tekken 3. About 4 years later a cheat disk would allow me to run the game in NTSC. I owned the Pal version. The game was so much better. Good times. Oh! Btw the game had ONE cgi ending, Max. It was unknown's

Tag 1 is the only Tekken game I’ve ever owned, got it for Christmas along with a new PS2 and a couple other games back in the day. Had a lot of fun bowling and scrubbing through the arcade while salivating over the graphics.
Hey Max, big fan. I’ve loved fighting games since I’ve been able to hold a controller. I’ve never been very good at them, but I find them incredibly fun. I’m casual af but have wanted to learn and become “decent”. I appreciate your love for the genre and your skill.
I’d love to “git gud” but I’m not sure I have it in me. So seeing you grind it out and have fun and success in fighting games is amazing to see.

Best soundtrack ever for a fighting game! I loved listening to this music all the time when playing as a kid! I would spend hours and hours playing this amazing game!!! My favorite characters were Paul and Law. 10/10 game!
TTT's soundtrack is my favorite, too. Some of my favorite music in any fighting game. I played recently and thought it might just be nostalgia, but no, it still holds up when compared to every other Tekken soundtrack since. Every track is a banger.

PS2 version is stunning of course but I honestly really like how the og arcade version looks. Like Tekken 3’s arcade version but beefed up. Also the low poly models look great imo, some of the PS2 models are a bit uncanny valley.
I brought my whole PS2 and CRT setup with a multi-tab to my college, so we could go ham on this game. It was great! 👊 The girls actually had a blast with it too.
Really fun to see my childhood game still be enjoyed by people slightly younger than me

For the longest time this was the only game I had for my PS2. Tag is a wonderful game. Still has my favourite character select theme in any game.
Recently saw Tag 1 in an arcade for the first time and I was SHOCKED seeing it looked so different from the PS2 version :o
Now if only Bandai Namco made a PS5 version of Tekken Tag Tournament 1 & 2 with improvements to the visuals and online with roll back net code.
