I absolutely love these detailed retrospectives of older competitive games. Tekken's history in particular has always felt like a mystery to me. Super happy there's more on the way!
My brother pulled off that twin lancer combo on me when he was practicing on his ps1. It took me so long to learn it from him and by the time I mastered it, he already bought a ps2 and starting playing tekken tag. God i miss those days lol
@@elbowpastatime You said 'it's like I'm 5 again', from which I inferred that you were 5 at the time T3 was released to console (T3 was released to console in '98). Apologies if I'm mistaken about that.
Tekken 3 was the fighting game of my childhood. I love how so many years later it still gets the same love as it did before. A shoutout to Dinosaur (and, of course, Arya himself). They did this game all of the justice it deserves with their script and narration.
I often wonder what a "Tekken All-Stars" type game would be. Take the most broken elements of every character from every game, and mold them into one. See what kind of CREATURES you create with that.

Tekken All-Stars already exists. Its called Tekken Tag 2. Its really good and with customisable soundtrack for each stage from ANY tekken before it! Has every character (except gon) and you can play it 4 players at the same time. Probably my fav of all time.
@Valkyrie ALTER Third Strike was released in 1999. But Elena's first appearance was in SFIII: New Generation which released within a month of Tekken 3. So essentially both characters were born at the same time. And if you think Elena in 2D SFIII plays anything like Eddy from the 3D Tekken 3, I don't know what to tell you.
Eddy was much less effective against a skilled player that knew his moveset. He was a death sentence to pick against me and I loved hammerfisting him with Heihache & Paul.
@Valkyrie ALTER not trying to glorify him. Just recognising him as a unique fighting game character is all. I don't use him but when 3 came out, he really stood out against the rest of the cast. Seems odd to do a retrospective and not mention him. Have a good day.
Amazing video as always Arya, keep up the good work! Also, some bits about Tekken 3 moves The last hit of Jin's 112 can sometimes go straight past the opponent's face, which is just hilarious to look at. Two wimpy punches feel powerful and the stronger blow just does nothing. The second hit of Heihachi and Hwoarang's uf+3,4s are unblockable if you time the 4 as late as possible Jin can get a df2 after CH b,f+2, and the df2 itself gave you a tight, but possible electric. Jin's ws4,4 deals 40 damage, a lot more than the normal df4,4. His hellsweep can deal 48 to 51 damage instead of 44 to 47, if you do a crouch dash and release, then press 4,4 instead of dashing in for a df4,4. Law's Junkyard can pass through enemies in some juggling attempts. Gon's immune to all throws, and probably meant to be immune to all highs, but he's still vulnerable to electrics.
Tekken 3 is the reason, why I love playing Tekken so much to this date, Its indeed the pinnacle of fighting games, a cult classic, also I would put Paul/King in top 5

I remember playing Demo One version over, over and over again and loving the game back in 1999. My parents bought the full version after I begged and begged, fell in love with King and Paul and I'm still there over 20 years later.
Doctor Bosconovitch is my most used character in Tekken 3. He may not be a top tier, but once you figure out how to control the old man, he is endless fun.
God .. I played this game so much in the arcades here in Brazil. It was years and years playing on the PlayStation too. Tekken 3 is for sure the best fighting game of my life. In the Tag Tournament version I was almost unbeatable with the duo Jin Kazama and Ling Xiaoyu. Soo many memories. Thank you for post this.
Oh, the memories.. I remember how amazed i was of the different outcomes a round can have because of the 3d and all the fine mechanics the game had. Playing Xiaoyu against Yoshi was always something amazing to witness.

Knew most of these stuff already since i revisited and researched older Tekkens myself recently, but i just couldn't but watch this video with all it's great visual presentations (especially showing the inputs with a FF7 esque little textbox). Keep up the great work. Btw, i would argue Ogre being stronger than Jin solely because of his waning moon
The casual tier list looks a lot different. For playing against people who don’t know how to play, picking Paul puts your opponent in a nightmare situation. “Why is Phoenix Smasher so good? Stop spamming Phoenix Smasher. Stupid broken character,” they’ll say. It always works.

Great dissection. No other game has blown me away such as Tekken 3. Graphic jump was insane. I saw Lei transitioning in to his 5 forms king fu and I was sold. Lei still my main to this day.
I really hope this becomes a series. It's strange how many people pine for some golden age of Tekken where the game was amazingly balanced and combos all did fair damage. Not a single Tekken game has ever been like that, no idea why people think that
Anybody else find it ironic that True Ogre was suppose to be tougher than regular Ogre but it was the exact opposite. Ogre was a much tougher fight because True Ogre was massive and as you said, that was kind of death sentence in T3.
Wow, this video is amazing! It brings me back so many good memories from my childhood... It will be so good to see a Tekken 4 video like this one. Keep it up the good work and again Arya, thank you so much for your videos

3 and 5 of this legendary series are by far the best ones. Especially 5 with possibly the best opening to a game ever and with T3 within itself, the arcade version. Pure diamonds.🤘🏻
I genuinely don't know any female fighting game character that is middle aged or older. Sonya was portrayed as middle aged for the first 10 mins of MK 11.
Amazing video. Such a trip down memory lane for me. I remember playing (and sometimes winning) against Ryan Hart in the days of Tekken 2 but that Jin EWGF just destroyed in 3. Plus they took away my Bruce so I had to pick some new characters up. Loved seeing this!
i still remember the day i witnessed the first images of tekken 3 on a game magazine.. i kept looking at it almost everyday!! the cg renders of the character still awesome even today!! i really miss jin being the hero protagonist.. it fit him so well.. sadly he became like a drama queen later.. which is boring..
My initial impression of T3 was disappointment. It went from the amazing individual stages (the Acropolis, Taj Mahal, Korean Temple etc) in T2 to dull generic shared stages. The great soundtrack full of ethnic music was replaced mostly by generic themes. The worst thing though was losing all my favourite characters Baek, Bruce and especially Kazuya. I thought at the time a Mishima without mist step was clunky. mist step could be used for a lot of things not just faster CDs. Before wavedash and teching you could use mist step to extend your crouch dash and pressure people especially on oki. Mist step could also be used as a sidestep if timed well. I remember that Gamesmaster footage at the end. I saw that episode when it was on tv. It was an exciting time as T3, VF3 and SF3 all came out around the same time. VF3 was the most impressive though.
Agreed. Tekken 3 came out shortly after VF3, and while it added tech rolling, which is huge & VF wouldn’t get until 4, if you look at the games side by side, VF’s desire to push the technological envelope puts its graphics & sounds well above tekken 3.
@Tcb bct Quite a lot of stages are shared between characters in 3 and many of them are bland looking. In Tekken 2 from what I remember only the 2 palette swaps share a stage with someone everyone else gets their own unique distinctive stage with music really personalized for them.
@Tcb bct That's what I mean there were a lot of shared dull looking stages in 3. In Tekken 2 only the palette swaps Alex and Angel shared a stage with anyone. Panda wasn't in Tekken 2. In 2 Nina's stage is the Acropolis, Anna the Taj Mahal and Jack a brightly lit industrial site at dusk. In 3 they share the same boring looking factory. The music is personal preference but I like 2s way more. Both of Kazuya's themes are amazing and there's so much variety.
@Tcb bct This was my impression of the 2 games at the time. I didn't get a chance to play Tekken in the arcades until TTT1, Tekken wasn't a common arcade so my thoughts are about the console versions where Tekken 2 got a much improved arranged soundtrack. I know some of the Tekken 1 themes were reused in T2 but because I only played T1 briefly before 2 it mostly sounded new and fresh to me. There were also lots of new ones. Anna had her own spot on the character select screen and her own stage. Julia and Heihachi are not palette swaps and neither are Paul and Bryan or Nina and Jack.
Here to appreciate the science of Tekken. I played them all (beginning with 3, then 2, then 1 and then from 3 onwards in order), except the most recent one, and I have to say the third one remains my favorite.
I played a demo setup for this in a walmart in Traverse City, Michigan when it came out and remember the set I played against a shopper ten years my senior vivididy to this day. The shit felt so great and fluid to play at the time. It was the Mario 64 of fighting games. This game and SFA3 were a part of my playatation childhood and to this day might be my game with the most hours spent played to least amount of mechanics understood at the time ratio. Great stuff.

Pretty much my favourite Tekken game ever. Nothing will ever come close to this. The gameplay, the soundtrack, the massive combos, sound effects, game modes, stage design and Tekken Force mode were all perfect. I will always love this game.
Quality content well done. I wonder is there a place when one can read on all the tekken 3 specifics when it comes to its mechanics, since I guess there where more quirky stuff then was in this video for brevity sake.
I'll NEVER forget playing an 8 vs 8 match against my older brother, for both of our last characters being yoshimitsu, and at the very end we both ko'd eachother resulting in a draw. Tekken 3 and tag tourney 1 will forever hold a place in my memory.

@@ShurikRubik wtf dude are you like using a bot or are you just one of those people that have no lives i have seen you in like almost every comment
That music brings me wayy back
Tekken 3 music strongly molded my tastes in non-mainstream EDM a decade later.
No mention of Eddy? Regardless of tier, he was a truly unique character with a great confusion/mixup game. Sick video though man. Ggs
@Valkyrie ALTER lol. Yes... just mash the buttons with eddy and you'd win.
Have a good day.
eddie was for noobs .... i destroyed many of them with perfect wins.
Amazing video as always Arya, keep up the good work! Also, some bits about Tekken 3 moves
The last hit of Jin's 112 can sometimes go straight past the opponent's face, which is just hilarious to look at. Two wimpy punches feel powerful and the stronger blow just does nothing.
The second hit of Heihachi and Hwoarang's uf+3,4s are unblockable if you time the 4 as late as possible
Jin can get a df2 after CH b,f+2, and the df2 itself gave you a tight, but possible electric.
Gon can hit by di electric because jin is doing jin thing being emo while being a golden boy

This was the first Tekken game that I played. Eventually I'd go back and play 2 & 1, but my first Tekken was in fact, Tekken 3.
The Tekken 2 Demo was my 1st crush. But damnit Tekken 3 was the love of my life
Thank you for post this.

the quality of this video was top tier, not only did it bring me back i also learned new things.

Oh, the memories.. I remember how amazed i was of the different outcomes a round can have because of the 3d and all the fine mechanics the game had. Playing Xiaoyu against Yoshi was always something amazing to witness.

Btw, i would argue Ogre being stronger than Jin solely because of his waning moon
Really didn’t know the composer for Nier: Automata also did Tekken, really cool!
The casual tier list looks a lot different. For playing against people who don’t know how to play, picking Paul puts your opponent in a nightmare situation. “Why is Phoenix Smasher so good? Stop spamming Phoenix Smasher. Stupid broken character,” they’ll say. It always works.

@Tcb bct Tekken 7 is awesome. I disagree.
Depends on how you look at it. In terms of gameplay T7 is awesome, but the storyline has been probably the worst so far in the series.
This was beautiful. Cant wait for the TTT retrospective 😍
Great dissection. No other game has blown me away such as Tekken 3. Graphic jump was insane. I saw Lei transitioning in to his 5 forms king fu and I was sold. Lei still my main to this day.
I love the tone when we select character and announcer said "ROUND ONE"..so electrify👍
Ah yes the origin story for many tekken players. Its nice to see some respect for the past
This game always makes me emotional and nostalgic, thank you.
Ogre was a much tougher fight because True Ogre was massive and as you said, that was kind of death sentence in T3.
cant wait for tekken 5 retrospective
This is a great idea for series, very informative, straightforward and concise. Keep it up!

nice work guys, good video.
T3 has the best soundtrack of all tekken, and tekken is in need of a similar time jump, refinment.
In my honest opinion Tekken 2 had the most legendary soundtrack. However Tekken 3 still stands well compared to the dubstep of T6 and T7.
Dude I loved the thumbnail you used for this video!
Julia and Heihachi are not palette swaps and neither are Paul and Bryan or Nina and Jack.
editing is just amazing on this video !!!
Each character with 20 moves each
Good times...
That and there wasn't a bloated ass roster like there is in T7.
Here to appreciate the science of Tekken. I played them all (beginning with 3, then 2, then 1 and then from 3 onwards in order), except the most recent one, and I have to say the third one remains my favorite.
I wish Bandai Namco hires an Indy Developer to Remaster Tekken 3.
