From of the Yiddish Glory project: the all-star supergroup that has come together to resurrect Jewish songs of World War II in the Soviet Union that were thought lost to history.
A tremendous discovery was made in Kiev, Ukraine. In the manuscript department of the Ukrainian National Library, archivists found a number of sealed boxes. They contained hand-written Yiddish documents dating back to 1947. Upon examination, it turned out that the pages contained thousands of songs, written by Yiddish-speaking Jews in Ukraine during World War II. Leading Soviet Jewish ethnomusicologists and linguists, including the legendary Moisei Beregovsky, had archived this music by Jewish refugees, Jewish soldiers in the Red Army and Holocaust survivors, who had defied Hitler in song. Stalin’s authorities arrested Beregovsky and his colleagues in 1950, and the documents were sealed. Scholars believed them to have been destroyed forever. University of Toronto professor Anna Shternshis learned of these songs buried deep in the archive. None has been performed in nearly 70 years. Until now. Shtershis worked with Psoy Korolenko, a poet, philologist, and performer of Yiddish music, reconstruct the tunes for these songs. The process was similar to that of archaeological digs, as they analyzed scarce supplementary notes, contextualized the lyrics, and took a leap of imagination.

Loyko (violins, guitar): The virtuosic Russian trio of classical, conservatory-trained violinists Sergey Erdenko and Artur Gorbenko, and guitarist Mike Savichev has made a career performing Roma (Gypsy) music magic at an elite level, completely reinventing the genre and pushing the performance limits of their instruments. Anna Shternshis is the Al and Malka Green Professor of Yiddish and the acting director of the Anne Tanenbaum Centre for Jewish Studies at the University of Toronto. A specialist in Soviet Yiddish culture, she is the author of the book Soviet and Kosher: Jewish Popular Culture in the Soviet Union, 1923 - 1939. (german.utoronto.ca/anna-shtern...)
Isaac Rosenberg (b. 2003) is a member of the Octava Choir, and sings in Russian, English, French and Yiddish. He will perform songs written during World War II by an 11-year old who lost his family during the Holocaust.

Go figure...Yiddish is finally cool. I am 65 years old, born in Toronto from Holocaust survivors. We spoke Yiddish at home and English outside. So yes, I can speak the language. Sadly, fewer of us can. When I meet another who is conversant in Yiddish, all social barriers instantly melt...we are One. Nothing of my insanity needs explanation.

Дослушал до конца... Впечатление двоякое; 1) радость, что еврейская тема привлекла внимание канадцев 2) печаль от того, как эта тема была представлена. МНОГОЕ выглядело профанацией с долей провокационности. Прежде всего педалирование Холокоста и Красной Армии. Удручает композиторская беспомощность Псоя Короленко ворующего кусками известные песни. Непонятно, зачем ему в концерте ,,Еврейская слава,, понадобились такие песни, как ,,Между небом и землей жаворонок вьется,, М. Глинки, ,,Тачанка,, ,,Катюша,, ,,,Амурские волны,, и ,,Синий платочек,, Его страсть переводить на идиш все , что попало просто ошеломляет, а стихи даже по ритмике не подходят, не говоря о содержании. Я могу простить широко образованному Псою матерные песенки на русском языке, но на идише его творчество меня , как слушателя, как исполнителя, коробит. Трактовки и аранжировки песен примитивны, хотя их исполняют профессиональные музыканты. Но они плохо знакомы с еврейской музыкой. Сергей Эрденко цыган, играет все хорошо, но ,,не по еврейски,, Публике, пришедшей в зал познать еврейское искусство, предлагают суррогат. О публике. Большая трагедия, что еврейское искусство предлагается слушателям на английском, русском, французском или немецком языках. С евреями надо говорить на идиш, как это делают французы в Москве, т.е. поют и говорят на французском, как и итальянцы, немцы и др. Наша зависимость унизительна. А между тем сегодня существует огромное количество сравнительно новых ,, нестрадательных ,, песен на идиш, близких и молодым и старым слушателям, и пренебрегать этим нельзя. Очень нужны популяризаторы и организаторы этого движения.
Сколько зрителей в зале понимают и говорят на ИДИШ? Может быть 1%? Какой может быть ИДИШ в Канаде? Те люди, которые на нём говорили почти все уже ушли в мир иной. А их потомки уже и не говорят и не понимают этот язык. Спасибо Псою Короленко даже за это, что он делает. Сейчас мало кто продвигает идишистскую культуру. Я понимаю вашу критику и понимаю то,что вы хотите. Я сам музыкант и хочу примерно того же что и вы.
Господа! Это не сам Короленко соединил слова с русскими мелодиями, это наследие очень простых музыкантов-евреев восточной Европы 1-й половины
20 века. Это предвоенные настроения местечко выходные евреев Польши, Украины, Белоруссии.
