It is a perfect paean to the very soul of Jewishness (at least in the East-European tradition), expressing the suffering, the tears, the heroism and the tribulations of endless wandering in the exile, the Diaspora. This is portrayed through a touching picture of children crowded around their Rebbe in a heated room, learning the wonders of the alphabet. Having read various books on the Holocaust and seen several movies, I can empathize with the countless victims. I also had an opportunity to visit the Sachsenhausen and Westerbork C camps and visualize the horror. Itzhak summarizes the sadness and loss in these pieces very poignantly.

Many years ago, I took care of an holocaust survivor lady. I knew nothing about the holocaust or Jews people then, but since the first day I went to her house I felt something that I cannot explain. She was bedridden, not talking at all, sometimes she opened her eyes, very rarely. Eye drops came daily at times out of her beautiful eyes I used to wipe her tears and I cried so much with her feeling her sorrow. within my heart and soul. I was wondering what the marks in her arm mean (Tattoo). Reading a booklet that her daughter left at tables I began to read the Torah it was like my soul was connected to another world since then. After she passed away few months later, and I still feel such pain a pain that never stops and many times I find myself crying specially after I went to college and learn about Jews and the Holocaust. I just find this video and this music touch deeply within my heart, the same way, I felt touched by that Holocaust lady crying at times. I love Jews people. I never told this to no one until now, it was my beautiful but, sad true story. BH. Shalom

Itzhak Perlman, one of the great musicians, violinists in the world, that never forgot our music who identify us so much ! Thank you very much! The arrangements are so beautiful too! Best regards from Argentina !
Yo también soy de Argentina, la cultura judía especialmente en yiddish fue en gran parte destruida por la voladura de la AMIA. Eramos tierra de promisión por eso nuestros abuelos eligieron Argentina.
I am so grateful to Itzhak Perlman for keeping these important pieces of World Culture alive and orchestrating them in such a beautiful manner. There is so little left of Yiddish culture, we should cherish what remains, no matter where we are from. Yiddish music always speaks to my heart. Greetings to all my Jewish friends from Syria.
You say there is so little left of the Yiddish culture, but that is not true. If you went to the Hassidic world you would find the Yiddish culture alive and well and growing.
@@mordechai- True, but unfortunately the Hassidic communities only preserve the religious aspect of Yiddish. Nothing wrong with that. But what about the Yiddish culture? The music, literature, theater, etc? There are no more authors publishing books in Yiddish. No more newspapers. Even in the Hassidic communities, some slowly abandon Yiddish in favor of the hosting country's language. In Europe, before the holocaust more than 7 million Jews spoke Yiddish as their native language. Today, unfortunately, that number is no more than 200,000
@@mordechai- Yiddish culture is not restricted to davening and memorizing all the little archaic, anal, life-negating proscriptions of the Jewish faith.
I know there are already so many comments, but i cannot help but to appreciate the absolute beauty of these wonderful pieces. As a gentile I am wholeheartedly in love with the culture and the people, and I wish the best of fortunes to the Jewish community and those who continue to promote this wonderful music and the many other beautiful aspects. שָׁלוֹם
Yitzhak Perelman can play any genre of music on his violin, he has such a deep understanding of it. Klezmer, Bluegrass, Country, Classical, you name it, he owns it... Exquisite!! This man also has a wonderful operatic quality singing voice as well.

THANK YOU..........for EVERY SECOND of devotion and hard work and BEAUTY YOU have so graciously given to US! You understand ....................... how POWERFUL this music IS and will ALWAYS BE.
I miss my mother in law. We always listen to the music when we visited her in Long Island. Memory and comfort, a true joy to listen to. Thumbs up with Itzhak Perlman. Thanks.
This is a man whose talent is sublime..otherworldly.. I love anything and everything he plays, but especially music from my own heritage. I sang this song for my Grandmother and Mother. I can actually hear each Yiddish word to the song spoken with each note and phrase Maestro Stern plays . He truly resonates with the Jewish soul, as clearly demonstrated in this album and his score and performance of the theme from "Shindler's List".
A heartbreaking performance (especially of my favourite "At the Fireplace") by a musician with BIG heart and an orchestra "in tune".... Can't stop listening and crying...
much love to my Jewish brothers and sisters, from a Jewish-born Muslim (mother is Jewish, family escaped pogroms in Russia and Poland and we lost many in the holocaust), praying for peace between Muslims, Jews, and Christians
Oh what a fine memory, the first song was enormously popular when I was a child just after WWII, thank you very much for this marvelous music with Itzhak Perlman.
Music reflects the soul of the composer and his/her people and time. Thank you Itzhak, you have told me eight stories... I have learned of the minds and hearts of the yearning, love, despair and joy... long past yet frozen in time with each composition... a story the does not lie or change, a truth profound if you will only listen.
As Iraqi bombs would drop in our heads, as a 7 year old these music were the only careless memories I have from my childhood, dancing on top of sofas imagining the whole orchestra around me in an open green, lushes place, I am in tears now how soothing this is ♥️🙏🏼
As a Jew and a son of a Holocaust survivor, I say that if you have never been a supporter of what the Nazis stood for and did, you should not be ashamed to be a German.
I'm trying to learn German y for me it's difficult. Latin languages pose no problem for me. Seeing that you can cross barriers I too will continue to overcome German if it be God's will. Shalom.
My mom and Yaya took me to see him perform Hebrew melodies at Atlanta symphony hall in 1997. It was incredible. I was so young. Bleacher seats. Yet still phenomenal.
Jewish melodies are full of sentiment for all aspects of life. "The people of the book" couldn't express better the hardships of its long history. Music and study for wisdom and moral perfection. This is the DNA of European Jewry.
When the violin cries out to tell the story of the homes and families that gather together on a beautiful days, and the memories of loved ones near and far and gone to heaven sure will the violin cries out ,remembering the laughter, pain ,sorrow and happiness that once a heart holds dearly closes to God almighty for His goodness towards us .
Oif'n pripetchik [about 20 minutes in] is one of favourite Jewish melodies. Raisins and Almonds [about 5 minutes further on] is pretty sweet too! And probably nobody plays them better than Perlman.
I remember most of this melody playing on weddings in small town call Tomashpol. I was 6 years old and they touch my hart. But your interpretation have touch hart of 70+ . Bravo Maestro!!!!!!!!!
Thank you for this. What a genius and gifted artist is Perlman. I was raised Catholic, but I can hear the ghosts and the anguish in this Music. "Those who do not learn from History are doomed to repeat it.", and yet humankind seems to be hell-bent on destroying each other and our planet. 😢
I recognize this comment. And to let somebody know my heartbreaking drama. I saw the new film of david attenborough. My family hhasmurdered my 94 years old mother by taking away from her beloved house. Her spirit is gone while still alive. This music helps me to get along with this.

II.WHEN THE REBBE ELIMELECH BECOMES SO VERY MERRY (06:49)
As der Rebbe Elimelech is gevoyrn asoi freylach
Music: Anonymous
Moshe (Moishe) Nadir was one of the great Jewish humorists and satirists. Here, with all due respect to the great Rabbi Elimelech, he portrays him as a happy human being, not above the foibles of frolicking with abandon at times of joy.
III.REYZELE (12:44)
Music: Mordechai Gebirtig
A victim of the Holocaust, Mordechai (Mordkhe) Gebirtig created many songs that became very popular throughout the lands of Jewish dispersion. Here a young maiden, wishing to preserve her traditional "purity," implores her secret lover not to whistle when he comes courting.
IV.AT THE FIREPLACE - Oif'n Pripetchik brennt a feier'l (16:57)
Music: Mark Warshavsky
This song, by a protege of Sholem Aleichem, has become the essence of the Yiddish folksong, and a classic of the genre.
V.DOYNA (21:06)
Music: Romanian Anonymous
This tune originated in Romanian folk song and was adopted by the Jewish Klezmers who traveled around playing at weddings and other festivities. (Similarly, many Jewish melodies found their way to the folksongs of other peoples.) The Doyna has thus become one of the most popular Klezmer melodies.
VI.RAISINS AND ALMONDS - Rozhinkes mit Mandelen (24:50)
Music: Abraham Goldfaden
Originally an aria from Goldfaden's operetta "Shulamit," this rapidly became such a hit that it quickly turned into a popular folksong. It is a statement of innocent optimism and faith in the Jewish fate and future.
VII.BY THE WAYSIDE STANDS A TREE - Oif'n Weyg steyt a Boim (30:31)
Music: Anonymous
Itzik Manger was a true folk-poet whose works have rightly become classics of Jewish literature. In the present example a young Jewish lad dreams of turning into a bird, so that he might experience true freedom in all its glory, to nest among the bare branches of a wayside tree, deserted in the wintry storm by all the birds.
VIII.A SONG - A Dudele (36:00)
Music: Reb Levi Yitzhak of Berditchev
Many of Rabbi Yitzhak's songs have become true folksongs. They are all, like the present one, simple and straightforward expressions of the faith in God the Almighty, and of the great inner joy that may be derived from this faith.
« Oh, mighty God! O mighty God!

@@diodotosbactrianos131 There ARE books coming out in Yiddish, and there ARE newspapers in Yiddish. About the rest, you're right.
This is a jewel of the Jewish antologic music. It is wonderfull the Itzaak Perlman's performance. I love it very much.
שָׁלוֹם

☀️☀️ THANKYOU MAESTRO ITZHAK ☀️☀️☀️☀️☀️☀️☀️ F.
Mr Perlman is a genius, - what a fantastic rendering of 'My Yiddishe Mama '. I couldn't stop crying
Me neither. My father used to play this on the piano. Rips my heart out since my mother died.
Yitzhak Perelman can play any genre of music on his violin, he has such a deep understanding of it. Klezmer, Bluegrass, Country, Classical, you name it, he owns it... Exquisite!! This man also has a wonderful operatic quality singing voice as well.

God bless Itzhak! What a tremendous player and my favorite violinist 👏👏
Recht herzlich Dank!!
In the NAME of G-d and EVERYTHING HE CREATED...I am GLAD HE created YOU...Mr. Itzhak Perlman. What a BLESSING YOU ARE to this whole world.
Thanks.
Always a great experience to listen to Itzhak Perlman perform. His performances are just magic.
This Music is so divine. It's reflect the profound sadness the pain of those Who disapeared so tragicly
La música más bella que escuchado en toda mi vida. ❤
this music reminds me so much of a friend who passed away about 10 years or so...I still miss him so
This is a man whose talent is sublime..otherworldly..
This was brilliant!! I listen to this when studying the Torah. It helps me focus and clears my mind from worldly thoughts. Toda raba!! Baruch Hashem!
A heartbreaking performance (especially of my favourite "At the Fireplace") by a musician with BIG heart and an orchestra "in tune".... Can't stop listening and crying...
Love anything Itzhak Perlman does!
Tears of joy, tears of sadness, tears of longing, tears of belonging.....
Oh...tears of everything in life

❤️😇 merci beaucoup.
Words cannot describe how beautiful this is
Oh what a fine memory, the first song was enormously popular when I was a child just after WWII, thank you very much for this marvelous music with Itzhak Perlman.
As Iraqi bombs would drop in our heads, as a 7 year old these music were the only careless memories I have from my childhood, dancing on top of sofas imagining the whole orchestra around me in an open green, lushes place, I am in tears now how soothing this is ♥️🙏🏼
Thank you for bringing the memories of my ancestor that were from Minsk, Kovno and Hungaria ~ I am sure they were singing those songs
Very, very beautiful music 🎶 Thank you very much Maestro Ithzak Perlman 🎻🎶🌺
Touches every fiber of my being. Thank you

As a Jew and a son of a Holocaust survivor, I say that if you have never been a supporter of what the Nazis stood for and did, you should not be ashamed to be a German.

Music for the heart, soul and mind !
Did a bach need this kind of promotion or justification or did it sell itself quite literally?

Thank you for this. What a genius and gifted artist is Perlman. I was raised Catholic, but I can hear the ghosts and the anguish in this Music. "Those who do not learn from History are doomed to repeat it.", and yet humankind seems to be hell-bent on destroying each other and our planet. 😢
