Maybe Slugo was such a disaster that it lead to rules against this sort of thing. Yeah, my head canon is Hoshi completely devastated the ecosystem of that planet.

Yes, this is what struck me when I saw this episode. These humans with so much experience on their own planet moving life forms around and causing devastation were pretty cavalier about relocating Sluggo. Maybe they just didn't talk about the study Phlox did about the species' reproduction and how he determined that parthenogenesis or other asexual reproduction wasn't possible, but it seems like a big problem.

Just wait for Sluggo to pupate and turn into a massively destructive Omnivore that devours half the planets native species.
Hopefully Sluggo doesn't reproduce asexually and/or isn't already pregnant.

My favorite Hoshi story. There is something so tender and loving about her demeanor when she releases Sluggo. The actress communicates this so well, nonverbally. I just wanted to start hugging...

I concur. I vividly remember seeing this episode when it first aired and being very happy to see an exploration of the implications of pre-TOS tech. This was about cutting their teeth, delivering on the promise of what the show was to be. Sadly, it only took a few episodes for them to have functioning phasers, transporters, perfectly intelligible UTs, etc. They really only spent a few minutes on the development of each tech (e.g. one guy who gets a few leaves sticking out of his skin from a transporter accident but was fine), which I have always seen as both a lack of imagination and a sorely missed opportunity.

Hoshi always felt like she was so much more interesting than she ever got the chance to be, especially since her focus episodes just entirely dried up just as the show developed its own identity in seasons 3 and 4. Just never quite got her chance to shine.
But it does make me appreciate this episode that much more in retrospect.

@@euansmith3699 We obviously don't know much about the slug into the enterprise episode, so we can't speculate all that much. Look into the very real process of parthenogenesis. No fertilization required! If this fictional slug could reproduce this way, the whole planet could be covered in them. But they would all be clones of Slugo.

Though it's been a very long time since I've seen this I think this is what cemented my belief that this series had a lot of potential, that struggle to get tech to work, having to actually translate stuff, knowing very little of what's there and often not having much help around the corner if they do, made it a very fun space exploration show. I didn't manage to keep up with it, and I guess I learned way after the fact that things got away from them, similar in my opinion to how Voyager's premise got its sharp edges dulled all too quickly.

I think the metaphor is a bit more elegant than you realized. The slug was taken from its home, and now finds that it must adapt to a new home. From what I remember, Hoshi was kind of strong-armed into joining the enterprise through pride. Thus, she was taken from her home and now must adapt to the new home that is the enterprise.
In the pilot archer said you don’t have to come along, but we’re going to fail if you don’t, and then in this episode, he again says sure you don’t have to talk to them but we’re going to die if you don’t.

Firefly did episodes like this, but the difference was the characters were well designed and the dialogue was a crackled with wit and insight. Enterprise lacks that throughout the majority of what I've seen of it. The characters are barely interesting and this episode is the epitome of the series' ongoing problem. It's also a retread of Voyager's first season episode, "The Cloud". That episode is also a day in the life of the crew, but that episode had the characters doing and saying interesting things and the title premise is halfway interesting. Enterprise is mainly the characters dicking around for the first two seasons, the third season doing their season long version of "Year of Hell" from Voyager and ends with a cop-out reset, and the fourth season, while BIG LEAGUE fan service-y really is where the series should have started. It's the first Trek series that I never felt compelled by, and that is saying someone who adores the franchise.

Humans barely even know their neighborhood and this guy thinks they will just call the alien cops from other ships when they dont even know the language or if there even is any authority to solve this.

It occurs to me that if Discovery had been made instead of Enterprise at that time it might have been much more popular, and the more formulaic Ent may be more popular today for some of the reasons that SNW is. It's a shame that both of those shows seem to have missed their marks.

I know I'm a really big Star Trek fan because I never gave a damn about any of the characters on Enterprise but I still tuned in, hoping only for a good sci-fi story and not expecting good character development. I felt like every character was some kind of combination of naive, arrogant, insecure, or just plain unlikeable. I've been disappointed a lot lately, but except for Star Trek Picard, just being Star Trek is often enough.
