Dude, Tawney casually just dropping DS9 episode names is something I did not know I would appreciate about her. But really, there has been some real acid trip storytelling at times in Trek, and being so self-aware that is what Lower Deck's true strength of the show is getting to experace the truly wild and wacky shit you would never see an actor like Patric Stwart do in live action is the best. That really shows you have actor here who not only understand the material but want to love, respect and protect it.
Yeah Tawney is dang cool. I'm glad that whatever happens with Lower Decks going forward she'll at least stay involved with Star Trek through the Starfleet Acadamy show if in a different way.
There was a special she and Eugene Cordero did for Star Trek Day a few years ago where she knew *all* the _Trek_ lore (and he knew none). She's a hardcore Trekkie, and I love that about her.
I was surprised there wasn't a mention of the the Easter Egg of the actual fifth-season title card since it was prominently showed during the discussion about not skipping the intro. The reference is that the title logo now has those weird light streaks behind it just like the fifth season of TNG's intro had. So it's a very season 5 franchise-specific deep cut.
It’s cringe levels of positive to me. Also it has to be bc they want paramount to keep giving them access to cast and crew and special events. I love lower decks but his discovery ups and downs are way off. He can’t be honest and say “yeah this is bad Star Trek” and I get it and it’s okay if they want to make their business successful but let’s be aware of what’s going on
Dude you are just a hater. Discovery has its ups and downs like any other shows. He’s been doing this for years before they got cast recognition. He also genuinely likes Lower Decks. I genuinely like Lower Decks.
The Lower Decks credits are now using the TNG season five effects with the streaking letters. Also, no upvote for Other Boimler's reverse Riker maneuver?
LOWER DECKS! LOWER DECKS! GIVE US MORE SEASONS! GIVE US MORE SEASONS! I can't believe Sean didn't notice Other Boimler doing the Riker maneuver, pretty sure his beard is a homage to Riker too.
Sean w/ the 1701 gripped by the green Apollo hand and "Star Trek is so stupid." made me do a spit-take. Absolutely! We love the silly, the dumb. The "Shatner Ham." We love it all. Welcome back Lower Decks, and thanks again to TrekCulture and Sean for the best recaps in the Alpha and Beta Quadrants!
I love that the verb "to Fairhaven" was instantly understood on first hearing it. That the outdoor sets for Fairhaven were reused for The Good Place is just a cool fun fact and seems somehow appropriate to me.
Cetation Observation: I cannot believe you didnt point out the Riding crop is the call back to Mariner complaining about substitute captains might be some weirdo with a riding crop. Which itself was a reference to Captain Styles from ST3.
"…I'm _not_ gonna cover up my insecurity by becoming a screaming despot. I'll just… I'll just be the kind of commander I wish I had." That quote alone shows that Mariner's growth from Season 4 is going to stick. And I appreciate that.
William Shatner mispronounced the word Orion, that's the origin. Noelle is so much cuter irl than Tendi 😍🥰❤️ I definitely related to what Rutherford said. After my dad passed away, my boss offered me a leave of absence, and I preferred to keep working so that I have something to focus on.
Man, Lower Decks keeps giving us the most reverential experience of all of Star Trek while being as silly and irreverent as possible at the same time. The best of many worlds. These characters have earned their emotional connections to viewers, every single one. The writing, the acting, the support to make this a reality every season we've gotten, thank you all. And, I can find no fault in every up and down Sean gave. On point.
We’ve reached the point in the existence of Lower Decks where its own previous episodes are now the references it is lovingly calling back to with its Easter eggs.
Lower Decks was the arrival of fire engine co. #1 to the dumpster fire that was the year 2020 for me. I remember watching the original trailer three times in a row and before I knew it, this show had become (and still is) my second favorite Trek after TOS. "It's five year mission, to boldly go..."
I can’t say enough about how excited I was to see what they did with the opening titles this season. It did not disappoint, from the TNG Season 5 “Superman” streaks on the actual title to the VERY packed space battle. I didn’t even pick up on the whole V’ger “blaster beam” sound right at the end of it until the second episode! Genius!🤣👏Special mention to the little background thing after the initial meeting with the two Cerritos crews. While Mariner and “Becky” are talking in the corridor, the two T’Anas are behind them, hissing and screeching at each other before chasing each other angrily.😾🤣👏
The intro battle is epic. Each season they keep adding more stuff, and this season they added ALL the stuff! The giant green hand, V'Ger, and the Tholians made me crack up, and that is on top of everything else that was already there (and i'm sure I missed something!)
I hadn't considered the negative aspect of Rutherford turning Otherford's emotions back on. Sure, it worked out for the best in the moment but you are right. A radical change to a person's mind without consent is both uncool AND has possible unforseen consequences.
I also didn't think of it as a negative until Sean gave it a down (and his perfectly logical reasoning). And that kind of bothers me. I should have realized it was a question of consent. Now this is not an excuse or me trying to make myself feel better, but LD is such an upbeat and funny show that I guess I wasn't even in the right mindset to see any negatives of that magnitude.
Rutherford not asking for consent was reminder/callback I felt to Tendi not asking for permission when trying to get fix Rutherford. Get's an Up for me not a down.
the Intro feels like they packed everything they were going to load into the intro as the show went on. Mariner's shout 'of BECKETT!' WAS SO MUCH LIKE Carols shout in the same situation earlier. i am so sad this is the end of the series but i am glad we get a final season.
One other "Observation": ...when Prime Captain Freeman asks where her counterpart is, Otherverse Ransom simply says, "It's really nice to see you again." ...that is TOTALLY a reference to TNG's "Parallels" where Parallel Captain Riker says the same thing to Prime Captain Picard over the viewscreen.
Yeah! The Riker Maneouver! I only noticed it in the Cetacean Observations in the screen shot that was placed when Sean mentioned Boimeler takes command of his ship for the arrested of the captain. The leg over the chair image. Cheers to you all, loving trek, loving lower decks, and loving trekculture….. this from a Star Wars fan!!!! Haha.
I think the most batshit crazy thing about Lower Decks in general is that because this is an actual Paramount production, everything that happens in the show is CANON 😂
The opening battle... as I started the opening and remembered to look out for the new thing, the idea of the giant ship-grabbing hand did occur to me! But I discounted it becauae we had the giant ransom hands in 2x01. Then I was marvelling at the Tholian web so much I didn't even notice V'Ger!
I loved the crossover, too, we got to know the actors behind the voices. I loved everything about this show and I was a StarTrek fan from the beginning (TOS). More PLEASE!
Someone else mentioned it in a reply but a lot of people have missed in the Intro Battle: A Breen Interceptor chasing a Klingon Bird of Prey. They fly by in the foreground right to left, then you can see them reappear way in the back as the Cerritos turns to leave.
My theory is that Becky is the version of Mariner who kept the season one promotion and got promoted to Lieutenant Commander in season two. We've seen that a Lieutenant Commander can jump straight to captain, so she probably would have been being offered a small command (like a tiny science vessel) when her mom got into trouble and assumed command of Cerritos instead. I presume Ransom didn't get promoted because he was neck deep in whatever shenanigans got Carol sent to Starbase 80 and was only saved from a similar fate because Becky chose to keep him on as her first officer.
Lower Decks and Prodigy both have demonstrated how much Star Trek benefits from animation. You can do all sorts of things that would be prohibitively expensive, difficult or impossible in live action. Things that were always supposed to be there, but we rarely if ever actually saw. Just the variety of aliens alone makes it worthwhile.
Not to take shots at the legacy actors, and not singling out which have or haven't aged well, but with animation we can see how the characters aged as opposed to how the actors aged (Voyager actors on Prodigy, DS9 on Lower Decks). If only Star Wars could have benefited from that in some way. I'm sorry but Picard (the show) and the Disney trilogy was a bit sad and distracting. Not quite as bad as Helen Hunt in the new season of Mad About You (go ahead, rip me a new one for my comments about... well all these iconic actors, I don't, don't deserve it).
I don't know how I missed the fact that the Cerritos design for Otherverse is also different (specifically in the nacelle design, at least I think so?) until watching this. Wild.
I laughed so hard at Boimler doing the reverse-Riker. I can't believe Shaun didn't mention it 🤣 I literally noticed it straight away and screamed out "Riker!"
I loled during the intro when V'ger showed up, trying to remember if they talked about the Orions in TOS anywhere other than Journey to Babel and The Menagerie/Cage
I loved it when Becky Freeman did the exact same sarcastic Vulcan salute 🖖 as Beckett Mariner when she did it to her mom in season 1, and Beckett responded the same way.
After season 4 began with the horrendous "Twovix" we got a damned good opening with "Dos Cerritos." It's a shame that, for all intents and purposes, Lower Decks will be signing off after this season though, if such is the case, I like to think it is better for a show to sign off with you wanting more than to keep going along until you feel it has worn out its welcome. I raise a glass to the USS Cerritos and say "thank-you." I don't really know what more I can say which hasn't already been said, but a huge thank-you also to Sean for being the best damned host of these Ups & Downs. It takes a certain kind of person to be able to deliver these breakdowns and interpretations, especially when the opinions shared aren't the most popular, and Sean has done so magnificently. I second the latinum Up.
"Rikerised" Boimler doing a reverse Riker maneouver.... that is it ! no way they surpass that gag !
It was AWESOME!!!
I came here to see if anyone else noticed.
Can't believe they missed that!
@@madrabbit9007 Like, they showed the SCREENSHOT; think he just forgot to mention it?
@@EmperorSteele I think they just missed it but I bet the next video will get a mention on this.
Jack Quaid giving you a “latinum up” must have been so surreal! 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
Came here to write just that!
Bearded Boimler doing the Riker maneuver (putting his leg over the chair) was just chef's kiss.
I'm surprised that he didn't point it out.
BACKWARDS!!!! he did it backwards!!! Even more awesome!!!😂😂😂
I loved that backwards Riker! 10.0
Just watched episode and missed this, what time was the backwards Riker?
@@starhawke380 It's in this video at about 28:56, if that helps.

I love the intro when they add EVERYTHING to that Borg fight! It's like "This is probably gonna be our last season! So we're gonna add EVERYTHING!"
Props to *Prodigy* too. It's also animated and a demonstration of younger folks making a difference in space. I love them both!🥰🖖
I loved this episode. I literally screamed about V-ger being in the intro.
That was marvelous. Love it so much
I noticed the green hand from Who Mourns For Adonais was new and missed V'Ger. It wasn't until the Ups and Downs I noticed it.
I was surprised there wasn't a mention of the the Easter Egg of the actual fifth-season title card since it was prominently showed during the discussion about not skipping the intro. Season 5 and ONLY season 5. This is exactly what I came here to say.
Yup. The deep cuts are real.
Good eye. I thought there was something different but couldn't put my finger on it thanks for helping me figure it out

I did not know The Good Place used the Fair Haven sets. Eleanor Shellstrop would tell me I'm basic!
“I miss my wife” - one of my favorite LD quotes
As much as I love Lower Decks (and Trek in general), THIS is what I have been waiting for! UPS AND DOWNS! UPS AND DOWNS! UPS AND DOWNS!

Animators: How many references do you want for the final season intro?
Mike McMahan: Yes.
Cetation Observation: I cannot believe you didnt point out the Riding crop is the call back to Mariner complaining about substitute captains might be some weirdo with a riding crop. Which itself was a reference to Captain Styles from ST3.
My favorite part of the Vulcan salute scene was Mariner says almost verbatim what her mom said to her when she did it in season 1.
"…I'm _not_ gonna cover up my insecurity by becoming a screaming despot. I'll just… I'll just be the kind of commander I wish I had."
That quote alone shows that Mariner's growth from Season 4 is going to stick. And I appreciate that.

Sean I simply love your enthusiasm and energy when you're presenting. It always brings a smile to my face.
I always watch Lower Decks with my youngest brother. We rarely skip the into sequence. Especially not on a new season.
"What in the Kzinti f**k" had me laughing out loud and I completely missed the rest of the quote 😂
As a fan since the beginning TOS, I love all the callbacks and easter eggs from the series. Boimler is my favorite character!
This is the greatest show for us old school Trek fans!
The slightly darker uniforms was a smart touch.
so much of today has been spent refreshing YT waiting for this...
a life well spent
I was almost as excited for the ups and downs as i was for the premiere itself. I watch them immediately after every elisode

So much better than screen crush…it’s a breath of fresh air when TH-cam presenters enjoy the content!!!
give an up for the shirt with the best star trek pickup line ever

Boimler with the "Riker"Beard, gold

The way Sean kept saying (TAS) Orions, was waiting for a mention of the two known El-Aurians, Guinan and Dr Soran.

I don’t want Lower Decks to end 😢. It’s my favorite of the streaming era of Treks. Could easily go for 10 seasons!
Yeah! The Riker Maneouver! I only noticed it in the Cetacean Observations in the screen shot that was placed when Sean mentioned Boimeler takes command of his ship for the arrested of the captain. I think the most batshit crazy thing about Lower Decks in general is that because this is an actual Paramount production, everything that happens in the show is CANON 😂

The Orion ship resembles the one in Those Old Scientists closer, but yes both are derived from the TOS Remastered one
I can't describe how much I enjoy this show! I bought all 4 finished seasons on digital, and will buy season 5 when it is available!
Lower Decks is by far my favorite Star Trek show.
The Reverse Riker Maneuver killed me.
The Orion vessel also looks like the D'Var from Those Old Scientists, which was honestly the most beautiful version of that ship to date.
I love the "slightly darker shade of red" for the uniforms
Im loving this season so far!!
One thing I think you missed is the confirmation that the 'Mariner' is indeed Beckett's middle name.
I cannot believe you missed Boimler doing the Riker Maneuver when he went to take over captaining the other Cerritos! I have never laughed so hard!
He did it in ST:SNW too 😆
I loved the crossover, too, we got to know the actors behind the voices. I loved everything about this show and I was a StarTrek fan from the beginning (TOS). More PLEASE!
Loved the "warp effect" on the logo for season 5. Great Easter egg!
Someone else mentioned it in a reply but a lot of people have missed in the Intro Battle: A Breen Interceptor chasing a Klingon Bird of Prey. They fly by in the foreground right to left, then you can see them reappear way in the back as the Cerritos turns to leave.
The two connected Cerritos reminded of the ST TAS story Time Trap with the Enterprise and the Klode class Klingon ship, the Klothos...
3:06 Aww, Seán got a latinum up from Jack Quaid 🥹
This was an awesome episode. A very good start to the season.
I'm SO glad lower decks is back! Love the show. Great video you're a great, and funny presenter. Love the video!
@12:20 You mentioned the Shaxses complimenting each other without the contrast of the T'Anas hissing at each other. It was so perfect.
Didn’t know how much I’ve missed Sean. Yay!
so happy to be watching your ups and downs again! I've missed you!
It’s back! I’m so happy it’s back! I’m so happy you’re happy it’s back! I’m happy we get to do Ups & Downs again because IT’S BACK! 😃

I loved how at the end, on the Other ship: "Boimler, you're acting captain" has him doing The Riker Maneuver over the chair to stand up.
Another awesome breakdown as usual! Live long and Prosper...Lower Decks, Lower Decks!
I love the GIANT green space hand on the Borg cube😃
