  • Today we are giving an update regarding Summer Temperatures in the Greenhouse. This is a Geothermal Greenhouse. We started with a kit from Greenhouseinthesnow.com. This Greenhouse has Aquaponics, Solar, a Pond, a Strawberry Trellis, and much more. Let us know if you'd like us to cover any specific topic during a future update.

Try using tubing for the bees to enter into the green house

Thank you so much for sharing the videos of your greenhouse and the results of various changes. It is a beautiful and relaxing. We’ll be adding a GHITS to our place this year. I especially admire your straight and upright retaining walls. How deep did you place your posts? I noticed also that you placed hardware where the posts and cross-boards meet. Can you give any additional advice regarding the retaining walls or about the kit, in general? We could take the conversation off-line, if that is easier.

yes, seems like something is ready for harvest every week. This week its been passion fruit, tomatoes and figs.

After a few years of tracking data, could you please describe the air temps you're getting out of the geothermal, and if you are seeing any variations with the seasons?

    • @trailbreakfarms

I am in the mid 50's F temperature during winter out of those pipes. Mid 60's during Summer. Pipes are 8 feet deep and shouldn't show that much variation. My guess is they are circulating air from the Greenhouse that isn't heating/cooling 100% to earths temperature during circulation but I don't know for sure. I need to do a better job collecting that Data and attempting to better understand it.

I was wondering what size your raised bed/retaining walls are? Thanks for all the great updates. Fascinating!

We seem to have similar weather here in SW Nebraska. In the newly constructed greenhouse, similar to yours, with no shade cloth, a month ago we had temps up to mid 130's at ground level ( the temperature sensor was shaded from sun). They're down 10-15 degrees here in late September as the sun's losing intensity. But still wow - very hot! No plants yet, so nothing to increase humidity. Plan to use the 40% shadecloth next year. Please describe your fan usage. Do you use small one when? Big one when? I currently have one 36" shop fan installed up high in the interior wall. On the east end I went with double pane awning type windows - in order to better seal out winter weather vs louvers. I agree with you that it does not make sense to run the loop when running a big fan, as you'll just push you cool moist loop air right to outdoors. I have my big fan set to come on at 36c degrees celcius and stay on until it's down to 30c deg celcius.
Are you pushing air through your loop from East to West?

I love Western Nebraska and spend a lot of time near Bayard. Its like a second home for me. I highly recommend a shade cloth. You will notice an immediate impact. Your weather is similar to mine but you have greater extremes than we have. I use two fans. I have a small 20' fan (I think) that I use all year long. Its the only fan during winter and a secondary fan during summer. I like it because I have enough venting and tubes in the Greenhouse so that I don't need to open any vents when it turns on. My big fan (I think its 24 or 30) runs only during the hot months. When it turns on, a couple of vents on my east end open to allow the air to pass thru. My main set of geothermal pipes run from East to west (intake on east, air comes out on the west).

What sensors do you use to keep track of the temperature?Does it use WiFi. I had one last winter and it quit working. I’m in NW Ks. I also have a greenhouse like yours. No aquarium though.

I bought a weather station from Acurite.com. Its a 5 in 1 station. 1 outside sensor and 4 inside sensors. I have a Wife hotspot that allows me to monitor the temperatures and data from anywhere just by pulling it up on my phone. It has worked great.

Russ said to me during my 2021 tour of his Alliance greenhouse model, that they use an Acurite App to monitor his greenhouse sensors.
