    So I'm relatively new to the sign carving community, I'm a novice woodworker and all my "carving" I've done has been with a dremel tool mostly on flags..when I found your TH-cam channel it was like a breath of fresh air..really enjoy your work and the way y'all handle your business! I'm looking to take your in depth inset carving course..do you have any discounts coming up for that class..asking for a friend.. lol..sorry for the long comment by the way

    8:33 hey guys, I have a question. I’ve been commissioned to do a memorial cross for someone’s pets, and they want the names carved in the arms of the cross. I’ll be using a kiln dried 4x4. What I need to know is, do you carve then seal before you spray your inset letters or seal then carve, and reseal after exposing fresh wood?

    • @oldave100
      @oldave100  5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      With redwood, we don't seal it until it's carved, sprayed and sanded. Redwood doesn't bleed when using the primer

  • @dekklin5517
    @dekklin5517 ปีที่แล้ว

    Hello! Thanks for the info! Question How should I go about sanding my letters and clean them after I free hand with a router? There's bits of chips everywhere in them.

    • @oldave100
      @oldave100  ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey buddy! Honestly man, you can check out any number of our videos and the almost all have the steps we take to sand our boards off after they're sprayed. Make sure you use a stiff brush before you spray your black, otherwise when you blow it off, a bunch of the black will come out.

  • @onlymoney8110

    What if you got an out door sign what's the best wood and sealer to use

    • @oldave100
      @oldave100  ปีที่แล้ว

      You can use pretty much any good wood for outdoor use. We use a lot of cedar. As far as finish, I really like the Helmsman Spar Urethane.

  • @vtxrider1800r
    @vtxrider1800r 10 หลายเดือนก่อน

    After sanding the finish off and before applying the stain, apply wood conditioner. That prevents blotches. The primary difference is that a "conditioner" is used before staining and a "sealer" is used after. They are both, for most purposes a "sealer" or barrier between two surfaces.

    Eric would using tow different color stains work the same way? Spray with Lacquer first, stain the interior letters and design then stain then sand then stain with the different color? Can you please help?

    • @oldave100
      @oldave100  ปีที่แล้ว

      I have used 2 different stains before. Normally I only use stain on the surface of the sign. Everything down in the carving is normally color. Hope this helps. If you have further questions you can email me directly, eric@makeawoodsign.com.

    So, do you seal every pine board BEFORE carving them? I have been carving bare wood then sealing after I "repaint" them with the primer after carving. (I know this is an old video but I have a lot to watch to "catch up"!)

    • @oldave100
      @oldave100  9 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      We always try to remember to seal our pine boards before we do anything to them. Usually try to do it as soon as we get back to the shop from the lumber yard

    I’m using acrylic paint that I get from the local HL. Does the acrylic sit on the surface of the sealer the same as the One Shot?

    • @oldave100
      @oldave100  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Lou, They should sit on top if the sign is sealed up with finish. One thing you want to do is test the reaction of the acrylic and the finish you are using on a test piece first to make sure they play well together. I have used acrylics before but I don't find they work near as well as one shot for me.

    • @Mrwolfpack85
      @Mrwolfpack85 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@oldave100 thanks, Eric. I need to try it. This last one I did took forever because the acrylic literally floated on the surface so had to “dab” the whole thing. Actually came out very nice but took forever.

    Can I use polyurethane to seal? I only have that and stain

    • @oldave100
      @oldave100  ปีที่แล้ว

      Sure I have used polyurethane for years. Just make sure if it's going outside that it's an exterior product.

    So you should seal the board before carving anything??

    • @oldave100
      @oldave100  ปีที่แล้ว

      I really only pre seal the boards when I'm using pine, to help prevent the black spray from bleeding. All the other woods I use don't have the bleeding tendency. Let me know if you have any other questions, eric@makeawoodsign.com. Thank you for watching ❤

    So a recap!
    1. Raw wood, basically clean it up for the first seal
    2. Seal it
    3. Draw design on top
    4. Cut it out
    5. Paint or stain design
    6. Seal again for the finished product!
    Is this correct?

    • @oldave100
      @oldave100  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      No, you want to carve, spray black, seal, sand, then stain and seal again. You want the clear coat down in the carving so the stain doesn't make the primer run.

    • @jacelandadventures1523

      @@oldave100 I’m gonna have to watch some more videos, it’s still not clear to me! 🤣I’ve made four signs in the last few days, I’m waiting on a few items before I finish them! So In that time I will be watching some of your demonstrations, do you have a particular videos that will help you mentioned a few in the video? 604, 238?

    • @oldave100

    instead of using that brush, use a 1-inch foam sponge brush, it works wonders, no streaks or drips.
