  • "The President's Own" United States Marine Band presents The Complete Marches of John Philip Sousa, a multi-year project to record and publish scores for all of Sousa's Marches. Sousa, known as "The March King," was director of the Marine Band from 1880 to 1892. Recording directed by Lieutenant Col. Jason K. Fettig. www.marineband.marines.mil/
Other than the fact that Sousa’s “thunderer” was undoubtedly a Mason, his identity may never be revealed. “The Thunderer” march was dedicated to Columbia Commandery No. 2, Knights Templar, of Washington, D.C., and it was composed on the occasion of the Twenty-fourth Triennial Conclave of the Grand Encampment. The conclave was held in October 1889 and was sponsored by Columbia Commandery No. 2. Sousa had been “knighted” in that organization three years earlier.
“The Thunderer” was Mrs. John Philip Sousa’s favorite march. This was revealed by their daughter Helen, who also surmised that the “thunderer” might have been her father’s salute to the London Times, which was known as “the thunderer.” It has since been determined that Sousa probably had no association with the newspaper at that time, however. The “thunderer” might have been one of the men in charge of making arrangements for the 1889 conclave-in particular, Myron M. Parker, who worked tirelessly to make the event the spectacular success that it was.

That’s a great idea! Marches are usually written in 6/8 time-which basically means that you can subdivide and count 1,2,1,2,1,2. This is why you see marching bands playing marches such as this one.

@@williamlopez2761 I think you will find that marches are usually written in 4/4 time, as in "Hut-2-3-4." Six-eight time is counted 1-2-3, 4-5-6.

    Absolutely wonderful, captivating, charismatic!
The trill at the beginning ("tremulous") is simply enchanting.
Sousa outdid himself with this little perfection.
Of all his marches, this is the one that I consider
    the most beautiful and emotional,
but very far from being corny.

In the 1952 movie "Stars and Stripes Forever", which starred Clifton Webb as Sousa, a boys band played this tune off-key outside Sousa's house on his birthday (November 4). The band sounded decidedly like the one in "The Music Man". Still, Sousa invited them inside for some cake.
