Mr. Hennig THANK YOU soo much for this video. I just picked up stick again after 25 years of not playing (and being mediocre at best on snare even back then.. ) and joined a community band two weeks ago. I've started taking lessons from someone half my age to try and learn what I never learned before, and working on The Thunderer for the band. Thank you for recording this, Its giving me something to help read my sheet music too and practice and aspire to do my best.

This was fun to listen to. Nice job of playing on this Sousa March. Marine Corp style.

Don this is clean clean perfection drumming. I grew up hearing this kind of snare work especially when Hawthorne Cabs and Blessed Sacrament drum corps were in their prime years. Drum corps and style are changing. This is the snare sound I like to hear. Unfortunately today the snares sound like FORMICA TABLE TOPS bring back the good Snare Sound but I am afraid that won't happen again? Thanks again for posting your fine fine drumming.

Im 66. Was in high school band drummer. I off course have drum sets, but also a c.d. of marine band playing sousa marches . Maybe 20 songs. The cyms snare and B.D. all soubd great with soft and accents. Especially the cyms.

Very nice... I'm wondering if the rolls should be played open when in a marching setting... Hmmm.. I could see arguing either way

A few years ago “The Presidents Own Marine Band” released a full album on TH-cam covering all of Sousas known marches and that albums rendition of “The Thunderer” ruined all other versions for me. Mainly because the one on TH-cam is the only version (outside of this video) that included the unique drum method (I don’t know what the technique is called) and it sets the rythim and tempo so well it legitimately ruins any version that doesn’t have it.
If I get 40 seconds into a play through of “The Thunderer” and I don’t hear it I am dissapointed 😂

My preference is for gut snares and a more open or at least more densely textured roll. c.f. Eastman Wind Ensemble uder Frederick Fennell.

The is in the style of the U.S. Marine Band. We never played open rolls on marches.
