On one of Richard Nixon's trips to the Middle East, the band struck up this march to greet him (outside the US, they can't play "Hail to the Chief"). Apparently no one realized, or bothered to check, that the Washington Post had dug up all the dirt about Watergate.
When I was in band in high school, we played and memorized many of the Sousa marches. We played them for football games, also on the 4th of July and while marching in parades. I loved them then and still do!
My MP platoon had a lot of musicians in it (who had played in marching bands). So one time, in the shower room where the acoustics were perfect, one guy started to singing out loud the opening trombone part to The Washington Post, and spontaneously, more guys joined in with brass parts. Soon half the platoon was singing, harmonizing, and perfectly recreating note for note the Souza march completely by memory and acapella. It sounded pretty amazing as it was totally unrehearsed and spontaneous.
Sousa's marches all have a martial air (as they should) but they also have a lilt, a lightness, that's almost danceable. I think that's their underlying appeal--at least that's why I like 'em!
I marched to this in the military once on parade and I was tearing up trying to hold back laughing at thought of marching to this and having to look extremely serious. Compared to every other march song we did together this was so hilariously upbeat and happy
Ukraїnian congratulations to the whole planet) You can treat the USA differently ... but Souza is really a strong composer in his profile. One of his best marches the planet has received.
🇺🇸 Here. Greeetings to Ukraine! Sousa loved the lower brass! And I was lucky enough to play two: the baritone horn. (like a euphonium but with the bell pointed to the audience.) later I played trombone. My band director was John Hoover, a sergeant (I think, definitely non-com) who directed the 202nd Division Army Band in the National Guard. (Indiana, just north of me) I feel lucky to have had him for a director!
Flying Circus theme is actually another one of Sousa's marches, though I totally see how you could mix them up. Check out the Liberty Bell, it's the actual march they used.
Re-elect mayor Goldie Wilson! Progress is his middle name. Mayor Wilson's progress platform means more jobs, better education, bigger civic improvements and lower taxes! On election day, cast your vote for a proven leader...
Sorry, but I got spoiled by a jazzed up version which I grew up listening to, and this, which was performed perfectly, seems so boring by comparison. It was Andre Kostelanetz and the John Philip Sousa Band with the album title THE THUNDERER, released by Columbia Records around 1965. Can be found here on TH-cam.
We English children of ill repute, confined, reviled, interred in a place of HM's pleasure a Childrens' Home of the 1940s-50s reputedly had this Yankee march for our occasional 'Meetings' when we marched uniformly to attend a whole school assembly where a 'Charter' was read out and reports and announcements shared to the regimented assembled lines of pristine presented children. Once assembled the imperial English 'Jerusalem' or 'Non Nobis Domine' was sung.

smwca123 This made my day. Thank you.
Wasn't Watergate after?
Could be why they played it 😂
I delivered the Washington Post before dawn on the day the headline read: “ Nixon Resigns”!

There's nothing like good Ole marching music (think of it this way, this might be the grassroots of Slipknot)🤘👍

Yeah, I hear that, too!
This march almost immediately helped popularize the two-step dance.
Superb as always! I especially enjoyed the half-note crescendo rolls in the snare carefully balanced to the sax runs. Beautiful!
Sheesh he was on a roll here. Cranking out hit after hit

The Liberty Bell always cracked me up because I associate it with Monty Python.
If you watch TPIR, this was used as a cue for trips to Washington D.C.
Always!! 😂
