    The prominence of bassoon in this piece gives me great joy.

    Probably my all time favorite piece we ever performed in High School and I think the rest of the band would probably agree. Felt like practically everyone got a chance to shine during this piece, especially some often overlooked instruments, and a bunch even got a chance to sing! The dense parts of this made me wonder what "Emblems" by Copland would look like in one of your visualizations.

    I've often thought how much more interesting it would be if this march were played at a university convocation or graduation -- far more so than one of Elgar's "Pomp and Circumstances", eh?

    This was not a piece I was expecting to see here, brings back good memories of performing this piece. I like the little outro with the shapes and colors, I have never noticed one of those before. Though I do remember a few intros doing something similar, like showing the pitch coloring in a video of Bartok's music.

    Like a child's imagination, as the piece progresses, it becomes more and more complex until it becomes an utter cacophony, difficult to parse and make sense of as a listener, but making perfect sense to the child, or conductor. The melody is simple and memorable, indicative of the simpler logic children utilize, but anyone who has ever been a child should attest to the fact that they are far more complex than they may appear.

      This composition and video are my "Life can be good, can't it!" escape clause. A 62 year old head banging in certain sections and then just rocking in time back and forth and side to side at others. And all the while, a smile. Favourited and visited more than I care to mention, mainly cause have lost count. Merci to both Composers (a fellow Aussie is) Percy Grainger and Smalin. More power to both,
      And apologies to Ludwig von... but 'Rage for a lost penny' is still one of my top three

    • @smalin
      @smalin  6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Assuming you're talking about the passage which starts there and ends at 4:31, you can intensify the thrill by playing the "trust game" with it. Here's how:
      At the accent at 4:25, start counting the beats (out loud until you're confident you can do it right). If the counting is correctly in time, then the accent at 4:31 happens at "7." The "truster" falls backwards so as to land at "7" in the "trustee's" arms.

    This way of showing the multiple parts of an orchestra score is very illuminating in a way that sheet music doesn't convey. I assume there is some octave transposition involved but that illustrates the point even better... it's the same set of notes across many sections and instruments/

    • @smalin
      @smalin  7 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      I'm not sure what you mean by "some octave transposition involved" ... in my graphical scores, the vertical position indicates the absolute pitch level of the note (so, for example, a flute and a piccolo playing the same written note would show up in two different positions because the piccolo plays notes an octave higher than written).

      Aℓαηтιc ƒℓαмє I know what a movement is. I think I misread your comment as "Children's March is part of a greater piece. It's not just one song, it's multiple movements." I thought you meant that Children's March was one movement from a greater piece of music. Like Claire de Lune.I now assume you are simply stating a general fact that there are compositions that have more than one movement to them. And that extend over an hour in length. So that was a mistake on my part.

      In this recording, it's often hard to hear the piano, so as a general rule of thumb, I'd say: bring out the piano when its notes are the highest thing in the texture, and when fast repeated chords anticipate a big tutti chord for the ensemble. And, of course, the glissando!

    A wonderful children's activity song. It has a real Peter Pan and the lost boys, playing follow the leader vibe. If only I could follow them over hill and dale, and across streams with tadpoles, and through fields of flowers with butterflies, etc., with my big speakers. There is even a spin around and get dizzy part and lie down and look at shapes in clouds until distant lightning says it's time to go home.

    Not that I mind, but why so many marches recently? Preparation for 4th of July?

    • @smalin

      Epsilon SIlver I started working on this one (suggested by my girlfriend), and it was looking interesting, so I decided to focus on marches between then and the 4th of July.

      smalin Ah-ha! So you *do* take suggestions! You've been caught red-handed Mr. Malinowski.

      @smalin  9 ปีที่แล้ว +12

      JoeMiyagi Actually, I misspoke. She didn't suggest it or request it; she just told me about it (and told me that she had a strong emotional connection to the piece; she played it to her daughters every morning to wake them up and get them out of bed in good spirits). When I asked "should I do a video of it?" she said "omigod, would you? I didn't want to ask" (because she knows how I feel about requests).

      Yes, there is one person I take suggestions from: the woman I'm sharing my life with.

    Missing the alto clarinet part and tuba, as well as there being no bass oboe, contrabassoon, or soprano sax in this song? why was all that included in the end?

    • @smalin
      @smalin  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Not sure what you mean by "missing." The instrument key/legend at the end is based on the score. What's your objection?

    • @cunurelive
      @cunurelive 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@smalin I own the score myself and by missing I mean the alto clarinet part and the tuba part are missing, as well as those random extra instuments included at the end

    I play 4th trumpet for this in my high school band. Despite the fact I don’t play for over half of it, it’s a fun song

    Anyone know which version of the score this is? Is the the original military + piano version or some edited arrangement?

    • @smalin
      @smalin  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The version I used is from R. Mark Rogers' critical edition (published by Southern Music Company). It is for band + piano. I don't know whether you would consider this the "original" version (I didn't have anything else to compare it to).

      Is it mandatory? Either Bourgeoise didn't want it, or the performer didn't want to do it. Creative license is a wonderful thing. ;)

    Do you have the files to some of the instrumental parts? Most importantly the Bass Oboe, english horn, Contrabass Sarrusophone/contrabassoon, string bass and piano? If so, could you send them to me? Thanks in advance!

    • @smalin
      @smalin  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      You should contact R. Mark Rogers at Southern Music Company for that sort of thing.
