I'm going to comment here so that another "home mechanic" researching this topic doesn't have to go through the pain that I did. First of all, thanks for making this video. I watched several videos before trying my impeller change for the first time. So long story short, nowhere in the the service manual or owner's manual does it say to drain the engine oil before dropping the lower unit. To my surprise, I had a flood of engine oil pouring out when I removed the shaft and dropped the gear box. I tried to research the problem on line and found a few people who had the same problem, but what they were being told was they had a costly engine oil leak and would need major repairs. This just didn't sound right to me, because I could see a hole at the top of the opening where the drive shaft stops, so I started to do more research. I won't go into detail, but the bottom line is that at least on my 2013 115EFI Four Stroke, you need to drain the engine oil before removing the gear case. I confirmed this with three different Mercury certified mechanics and called Mercury customer service. I realize the OptiMax is different than the Four Stroke, but I just wanted to mention this so someone else doesn't make a mess like I did.
I start the Marine Maintenance Technology Program at Skagit Valley College in Anacortes WA in the fall (2018) This great video gives me a good heads up to details of what I'll be learning. Thanks!
Thank you Phil. I've used your video to refer to this time instead of going to the manual. This is much easier to follow. Quick and easy maintenance. The pito tube removal is something that few others ever explain. Excellent video.
Thankyou for showing me this. This is awesome to know. I have an old mariner 30 hp and I didn't even know this was on it. I really need to service my engine. Juan Streit
At 16:35, better advice would be to have the gearcase in gear, and just rotate the driveshaft by turning the prop slightly. That way you don't need a second person trying to turn the engine over.... Let's keep it simple, folks. Other than that, this is a great instruction video. two thumbs up
I've done this once and I'm about to do it again. I'm aircraft mechanic that doesn't know jack-all about outboards, especially my 150 Opti-Max... On first first go at this impeller change out, that's what I did (turn the prop to align the drive shaft). I wonder if there is some actual reason for turning (bumping) the fly wheel instead. Is there?
@@TioGrassiente People that move it to forward or reverse without moving the forward control shift lever to the right position it causes a problem where it won't shift requiring disassembly and re-syncing. Too difficult to explain to most in these types of videos so it's best to just assume the boat is in neutral like they almost always are in storage or maintenance.
You installed to the top shaft seal incorrectly. The install tool Merc supplies is designed to be used by pushing it down as far as it will go. Not just touching like you said. The Mercury Specification is the top of the rubber seal needs to end up .350" above the metal housing plus or minus .030"
Great video! Wish I would have seen this a few hours ago. This looks exactly like my 2013 Verado 300. Appreciate this video greatly! Cheers, from Miami.
Great video! My son was monkeying around with the shift rod on the lower unit while it was off. My shifter is in neutral at the steering wheel, however, how do I know that the shift rod on the lower unit is oriented correctly for neutral before I attach the lower unit back?
I have a Mercury 225 Optimax. I wanted to know whether to run it with fresh water is possible (only with headphones), attach the hose to the discharge side where there is that fake plastic bolt that is to be checked
HI PHil- great video- I have a 2007 115 optimax--is this the same procedure for that motor? Does it have the (yellow carrier) too? I have seen this apart once but didn't pay close attention. I don't think people appreciate how much work it takes to make a decent instructional video- so I give you props for this- its a great video and answered many of my concerns about doing this procedure. Thanks
Just a quick tip, if your really stuck with low water pressure and no new impeller, as a “get out of trouble “ move just turn the impeller around 180 degrees and replace. This will make each blade reform with better seating and better pressure. Just sayin!!!
There is a difference between a 86-89 35hp and a 2004 200hp. I have a Merc 40hp classic and just used the video as something to point me in the right direction, knowing well that everything wasn't going to be identical.
My first time changing impeller on my mercury 40 hp bigfoot . I follow the esteps on your video , everething went smooth till i turn the mootor on to check if impeller working good no problem on that so but i notice thd propeller was turning fast wile on neutral so i itaked to the lake and didnt want to go in gear forward or reverse but propeller still spining fast so what went wrong on that ,any subgestions
good video,I tried to do 20 hr serv. on my 2016 90 4 stroke merc. out board could'nt get lower unit back up, went to dealer and they installed it for me, got home and hooked up water to test run motor noticed no water exiting tell tail, what do you think is wrong? do I need to drop unit again? thank"s David O
At the 1:57 mark you are removing a bolt to a plate. Can you tell me what size socket to use? That bolt is down a long chamber so its hard to see if the socket is the right size.
yes its under the bottom carb and forward. remove the air silencer and starter motor if you can't get at the nut holding the shift rod on. be sure to pop it in reverse before doing this
hi, someone sugested that when i put the silicone between the waterpump and the exhaust as you did, that i let the silicone dry first before replacing the lower, is this correct?
Georooney You are 100% right. I asked it because we have shit lot of algaes here. And I sometimes have to take them out from water pump between the services. Not often, but it happens. Of course - changing of gaskets, even if they are not damaged, is the rule of good form. But in my case - I don't see the reason to change it now if there is big probability of need to disassemble the pump one or two week later
I had oil leaking out from my 25hp mercury prop and had replaced my prop oil seals and o ring which held up for a couple days and started leaking again. Is it possible something else is causing this?
You must NOT have any grease on top of the drive shaft because grease can NOT be compressed! And so,, when you push the driveshaft into the female splined area of the crankshaft, the driveshaft will not go inside the female, because the grease will stop it from fully entering into the right position!
By far one of the best mechanic videos I've ever watched. No bsing around just straight to the point and everything was well explained. Great job
Danny Mayo i 100% agree.
Hard to see the black silicone part? Rest is awesome!

I had the same question. I have watched several videos on this and NONE of them said to drain the oil. That should be the FIRST thing said

Awesome upload. I love the attention to detail when most would just slap it together.
Best maintenance video I've ever seen. Strong work!
This was a great video! First time boat owner and following this video was EXTREMELY helpful

Excellent tips throughout...great camera work too
Thankyou for showing me this. This is awesome to know. I have an old mariner 30 hp and I didn't even know this was on it. I really need to service my engine.
Juan Streit
Good mechanic right there. Wish he lived close to me to work on my boat
Good job! Just bought a Mercury 60 hp, and Subscribed 👍🏼🇱🇷
This guy is like the Norm Abram of outboards. Very cool stuff ; )
he looks like dan bilzerian.
He does favor : P
Awesome video. Great commentary and awesome camera work.
Great video, straight to the point.
Thanks!
That man knows his craft! Great video.

Excellent video. Everything was explained very well. Thanks!
Excellent video. Wasn’t exactly what I was looking for BUT went away with knowledge. I do know I’m making a devise like that to hold my lower unit!!!
A Black and Decker Workmate portable bench is awesome as the "jaws" can be adjusted perfectly for holding the unit.
Great video! Wish I would have seen this a few hours ago. This looks exactly like my 2013 Verado 300. Appreciate this video greatly! Cheers, from Miami.

Excellent Video. Has convinced me to keep paying for this to be done. Too complicated for me. Thanks, great informative video.
I have a Mercury 225 Optimax. I wanted to know whether to run it with fresh water is possible (only with headphones), attach the hose to the discharge side where there is that fake plastic bolt that is to be checked
What size was the nut that held on the plate? Can not seem to fit my ratchet in there.
awesome video and thanks for all the great tips!!!!!
Good job, much more detailed than some other similar videos here.
a very good teacher. thank u
Very informative and to the point
Put in reverse before removal and turn the prop to install the drive shaft spline. Safer than turning flywheel

Great video, that guy is a wicked hard worker 🤣
I realize it is hard to show ,but how about explaining what all these tubes and shafts are for and a better look at how they connect
Great, detailed video. Thanks so much for sharing this!

Any videos of that evinrude 8hp in the background??
Would this be the reason if the boat would start beeping continuously once your turn it on?
Why did you use the silicone across the divider at the back of the housing? I didn't see that from the factory.
Very good video. Thanks for uploading.
WD40 wait 10 minutes grad a putty nice and watch how easy the gasket scraps off. Super clean and easy time saver.
I would say that an entry level mechanic could for sure do the job. Just take your time and be careful.
Really good video
That's a professional. Wish I lived close to them to service my boat. Would this be similar to a 2004 Yamaha 225 hpdi.
what is the grease you used on the bolts, nice video
Nice and Clean Job!!!!
If the seals are wore in the Carrier, would you get water in your gear case?
thanx very much!!! i have a 2005 mercury optimal xs racing engine. Would every thing be the same??
Can I put the garden hose through the water intake and run the motor to flush the salt water out instead off using ear muff? Thanks.
good stuff. Forgot the prop. Gear lube. Fishing line.
great video very informative
Thank you for sharing your knowledge!
Please tell me Why you put the black silicone across the block line ? I have an alpha 1 gen. 2 I/o should I do the same ? Thank you.

do you put the silicone in place and let dry first or pt in place and install wet ?

Would it be safe to assume that a 2006 OptiMax 115 is the same more or less in changing the LWU?
what size and type of tool are you using to get big allen type bolt out with under anti vent plate at anold
Excellent Video, Explained perfectly
Good shit phil ... very informative
i have to replace mine
cam i get away with just replacing with the basic kit
or do i have to buy the kit that has "EVERYTHING" in it?
THX
I have a evinrude motor and it leaks gas and oil out. Do you know why it might leak?
thats why you renstall it in gear so you can turn the prop to make the shaft go in first try
You know its going to be good when you see a hammer in the thumbnail
I have never used this much grease in my life...LOL
At the 1:57 mark you are removing a bolt to a plate. Can you tell me what size socket to use? That bolt is down a long chamber so its hard to see if the socket is the right size.
Just try different sockets till one fits
i have a 1993 johnson 50 hp and i have to change the impeller, my prob is i cant figure out how to un hook the shift shaft first
yes its under the bottom carb and forward. remove the air silencer and starter motor if you can't get at the nut holding the shift rod on. be sure to pop it in reverse before doing this
hi, someone sugested that when i put the silicone between the waterpump and the exhaust as you did, that i let the silicone dry first before replacing the lower, is this correct?
I personally would have to say no. once it sets it cant be compressed to "very thin" for the seal all the way around.
i got a 1999 150 suzuki i get water thru the pea hole but nothing thru the heads ive removed the thermostats and still no water
Like he said always remember to lubricate the tip of your shaft be for inserting it.😂😂😂
Exelente Video,FELICITACIONES
I replaced the water pump on a 25 horse m 2005 mercury 4 stroke bigfoot. put it back together ,, now it will not shift,
what happened
great video
hello, why you clean the top of the shaft in 07:28, any particular reason???
lo muestra fácil y sencillo...buen trabajo
I'm local how much to do this job?
Can anyone tell me if you NEED that pitot tube?
Is it important to replace the gaskets if I don't use my outboard at the solt water?
Why would you not want to replace the gaskets, since you got new ones with the kit anyway?
Georooney You are 100% right. I asked it because we have shit lot of algaes here. And I sometimes have to take them out from water pump between the services. Not often, but it happens. Gotcha! That makes sense.
What is the name of yellow piece?
I had oil leaking out from my 25hp mercury prop and had replaced my prop oil seals and o ring which held up for a couple days and started leaking again. Is it possible something else is causing this?
It's a two stroke. Sometimes they drip oil that's two-stroke. Think "unburned".
Show how to replace water supply line from pump to engine' and show how to remove year housing.how to replace e water tube on mucery 225 engine

q bien las esplicaciones de la mecanica
thank you super video

Great share, thank you...
Hello any body can help me to change oil sealer under water pump
Wonder if he hangs out at Dunkin Donuts? lol
Yea it is the same but no wires.
My auto mechanic dad died of leukemia caused by working in oil and grease and solvent every day and not wearing rubber gloves.
Thanks bro 👍
Thank you
(?) You mention changing the impeller every other season. How many engine hours each season is this based on.
Bravo!!
When taking off the lower unit do you have to put the gear in forward before taking it off like a alpha drive I/O ?
yes, best way to do it
it doesnt matter , neutral is ok
"a little dab uh grease."
