- This is a small mod I worked on this week that allows Sonic, Tails, Knuckles and Amy to use their mouths more in-game, rather than mind projecting their screams at you.

I always though it looks strange when I was a kid but then when I notice his teeth are shape more like an animal's so I thought that maybe he talks like that because he is supposed to be an animal who often communicate with their ears and eyebrows. But nowadays I think Sega really want to show off their new facial expressive features which come off really excessive and uncannily off

I'm pretty sure that was actually a translation error. In the Japanese version, he says “Is this Angel Island?” It context, he's confused on whether or not he was on Angel Island, which crashed into the Mystic Ruins.
Lance yeah, and Im pretty sure that whole Classic Sonic being from another dimension retcon is actually a translation error, oh boy, time to ignore everything you said because I have no idea what you're talking about.

No unfortunately is the classic Sonic thing not a translation error the Japanese version maybe doesn't say dimension but saying "its that Sonic form a different world" has pretty much the same implications.
Ryno Behnke and in the original japanese Sonic Adventure Script, Sonic said this is Angel Island. It doesn't say so, but it has the same implication.

The fact that they put separate dialogues in for _every area in the game_ amazes me. Like, who's gonna wait around to hear what Sonic has to say about the snowboarding segment ahead?
Nobody. No one's got that patience.
But they did it anyway.

@@secoTheSonicFan feel like you're making a big deal out of these lines. They're no different to like Sonic's idle poses in 2D games. You don't gain anything from hearing or not hearing them, they're just neat. If anything I'd prefer idle lines compared to the constant dialogue of Forces.
@@secoTheSonicFan Cool. It's not the end of the world buddy. It's better phrased as a "design oversight" because it's just using the systems that levels use. It's not Shadow the Hedgehog alignment system of design so it really doesn't warrant ranting about.
Not to mention that a lot of these are just sort of generic.
@@secoTheSonicFan Jesus man, their just idle lines, it's not that deep. Who's to say the developers didn't just add these in for fun and nothing more? I'm pretty sure 1998 Sonic Team was already aware players wasn't gonna stand around for 3 minutes just to hear Sonic talk about how cold Ice Cap is or how high Sky Deck is, it's just harmless fun the developers decided to add in. It's no different from Sonic killing himself in Sonic CD if you stand around for 3 minutes doing nothing.

Ryan was always the best English voice IMO, and he got better in each game. That being said, no one can top Junichi Kanemaru. The man practically IS Sonic.

Probably because it looks a lot different from when he last visited, mainly due to it somewhat merging with the Mystic Ruins area.
The line reading is wrong, though. It should be:
"Sooo... *this* is Angel Island?"
Rather than:
"So _this_ is Angel Island!"

Dang, I have so much more appreciation for Ryan Drummond's performance as Sonic. I have never heard 90% of the lines in this video. Such small details that really bring the character to life. Absolutely remarkable, really.
Voice clips most people have probably never heard before.
@Mihnea Bărbulescu Some of them are near-impossible to hear in-game because they require standing still during active boss fights and the like.
It also doesn't help that he has stock phrases that remain the same in every area. After so many of the same "Better get going!", you tend to think that's all he's got for that area.

I like these idle dialogues, shows details about the stages and characters in the game, and makes the game feel "more alive". Also, that animation it's pretty good, it was strange to see them talking without using their mouth, now it actually makes sense.
I'd like to see videos of Tails, Knuckles and Amy talking "with their mouths."

It amazes me how every character have lines for every type of situation, every area, including areas you don't expect them to have any idle dialogue, etc., Sonic Team must've had a lot of time on their hands or were already blowing their load on the game that they decided to get as much out of the voice actors than realistically was needed.

Sonic is one of the most dense mothertruckers around, saying things like "I can hear the wind in the distance" while INSIDE A TORNADO
This game has the best cutscenes ever specially with characters faces while talking :)
And they were rendered in-engine! Unlike SA2 which had pre-rendered FMVs.

@@slabman6262 To be fair, unleashed looks cleaner, has (mostly) better lighting, better audio, and the animation is way less janky. But sa1 cutscenes can look good too. Honestly, I'd prefer sa1 over unleashed if the models and animation were bumped to 2021 standards, because I think they're pretty good on their own.

I'm becoming fairly certain that Sonic Adventure will remain the peak of the series. Say what you will about dated graphics or this and that, but it was a very ambitious title, especially for a Sonic game. I have nothing but feelings of love and nostalgia towards this masterpiece!

2004 (I hope I remember release year correctly) Half-Life 2 also has this feature, but the fact that SA1 was released 6 years early and can have the same thing is just... Wow

I've never heard many of these lines before, and they've really made me appreciate Sonic Adventure's writing and Ryan Drummond's voice acting more than I already did, which was quite a bit! It's really charming stuff even if obvious at times, prevalent in every area in the game, and it really helps you know more about Sonic's tastes and personality, which many cartoony mascots, like Mario and even modern Sonic, fail to do. As for Ryan as Sonic, he has such an upbeat and charming teenage voice that's easy to love, and I completely understand why so many fans want him back!
Oh, and the new animations really help sell the lines and adds more character to it, so great work!
