I recently clicked on a Sanderson video. I either missed it or there were no spoiler warnings, and I didn't really know what it was about. Out of nowhere, from my perspective, he drops "and you get to attend the wedding of x and y". My brain goes "wait... are those the names of two characters both mentioned in the first dozen pages or so of this huge series I just started reading? Oh well, I guess those two are meeting at some point, then."
@@mascot4950 On the bright side, it's pretty obvious from the beginning of the second book, so this spoiler only affected the first. Interesting how the poster for "Rebel Moon" looks nothing like anyone, or anything in the actual movie itself and is vastly superior as a result. That's like the wrapper tasting better than the candy bar. A truly "Modern"(tm) approach to film making.
About the Rebel Moon poster: I find it quite funny that the movie(s?) is a space opera and the poster looks like it came straight out of Game of Thrones
Which is odd, because a space opera with a purely medieval aesthetic would be baller. I’m actually trying to write a series like that (instead of spaceships, they travel to other worlds with portals).
@@Ximira_Xelo Kind of, but instead of a stargate, it's a type of crystal that serves as a conduit. The source of magic is Stardust gathered from meteorites. It's a work in progress, so I might use a different source (they have meteorite swords though, because that just makes too much since).

I also appreciate the design of the witcher comic. After all, they used to advertise they'd never have ads and now...
Red Sonja? 😁 Watched it 25 years ago. I’m always surprised that a lot of people didn’t hear about it. After all: it’s Arnie! It’s a fun movie (same as Conan…….)
Hearing that tidbit about how badly Daniel handles character actors staying in character really makes me want to see him having to navigate a medieval fair or something like the Star Wars hotel.
funnily enough Netflix has always been bundled with another streaming service here in India and I don't know a single person who subbed to it separately ever, They are most certainly only talking about US and Canada
Rebel Moon was dogshit. But that poster? Goddamn. That artist went above and beyond. Probably will make Netflix a few millions just on the unaware viewers.
The Red Sonja thing is... tricky. The original character was named Red Sonya - with a 'y' - and wasn't in the world of Conan. Instead she was a mercenary in late medieval Europe. Created by RE Howard, she was one of his few female main characters. However, the Red Sonja character was based on L Sprague de Camp's rewrite of the character to fit a Conan story, and as such is kind of sort of not created by Marvel - but also definitely is. Like I said, it's... tricky.
Created by Roy Thomas & Barry Windsor-Smith, based on a character created by Robert E. Howard. I have not been able to confirm the connection to L. Sprague de Camp (or Lin Carter?).
Yeah, you should try one out. They are usually super fun with live jousting, gigantic turkey legs the size of your forearm, huge tankards of ale, all kinds of wild events from magic, to comedy, to time period accurate singing and dancing plus they usually have a lot of wild stuff you wouldn't even think to expect AND they all ALWAYS have loads and loads of awesome handmade schwag you can buy! I was hyped for the 1st Rebel Moon. I watched it, it took 3 attempts cause I honestly kept falling asleep during it. I haven't watched the 2nd and have no intention to ever. What really annoyed me was they promoted this as something never before seen, something new and ground breaking and all he gave us was the shittiest version of The Seven Samurai and I've seen most of the versions out there.
He went in to the studio with drawings like "Let's do seven samurai with these people in space" And they were like "Oh, that's a good idea. Who are they?" "No idea... But they look cool right?"
Which is sad, because "Seven Samurai IN SPACE" sounds like it would take effort to mess up (or combine it with Magnificent Seven and make it a Space Western). But part 2 especially might be the first film I've seen in a long time where I thought "wow... people AREN'T being too men in their reviews."
Gotta say the fantasy news host not knowing about the Red Sonja movie surprised me. Maybe there's potential here for some entertaining content about 80s sword & sorcery movies in general.
Gail Simone writing a prose novel feels like a big thing! She's been one of the most influencial female writers in comics for the past decades. Her work has been huge for diversity representation before it really becomes a thing big comic publisher would push and it has always been naturally integrated into character development. I'll keep a look on that Sonja book...
“Rebel moon has to be the worst movie that I’ve seen in the past 5 years.” Makes me wonder what he saw in year 6 that beat it. Was there a live adaptation of The Cursed Child that I’m not aware of?
I love that the Red Sonja movie is based on a Marvel character, created for the Conan comics, co-stars Arnold Schwarzenegger as "not Conan." For those interested, Gail Simone has largely written Batman spin-off comics, Deadpool, and Marvel's Domino. She will also be the first woman to write Uncanny X-Men solo*, beginning in August. (*Kelly Thompson was the first as co-writer on the Uncanny X-Men 2018 series). People online have been joking about movies having "walled off" DLC for years. Zack Snyder apparently didn't get that it was a joke. I'm surprised Netflix didn't charge $9.99 for the additional content. I personally feel Snyder is an amazing visualist. He's crap at character direction or coherent story, however.
I hope you eventually read all of Hainish Cycle. It takes Left Hand and The Dispossessed to a whole new level. I’m doing a full Le Guin read-through currently and am constantly blown away by the depth and breadth of her style
The intro to Left Hand of Darkness is something I also share as often as possible. Fundamentally changed my perspective not only on SciFi but all fiction.
I had to check my Netflix account. It's offering to resume Rebel Moon at 30 minutes, so that was when I bailed out on it. I would say I dodged a bullet, but that's still 30 minutes I'll never get back.
Depends if you want to learn from it. I think Rebel Moon so far is a great example of a potential decent story that is just ruined in every scene by the writing and directing. It's far more blatant and in your face with it's failures that you can learn a lot about what not to do in the creative process, and failure can be a great teacher.
Daniel just wanted to let you know I love your channel - you always bring a smile to my face and your voice is calming. I am getting back into writing because of you as well. Thank you for all you do!
Not a big fan of the new mic settings, background hiss is even more pronounced and the sibilance makes the overall sound kind of harsh to my ears. Thank you for the content though, love Fantasy News!
The Left Hand of Darkness was one of the first Spec Fic books I read in my late teens. That book still carries weight in my mind, and I still think about it regularly.
As for the Witcher I think it's taken from our (Polish girl here) first comic book adaptation by Bogusław Polch. I have a soft spot for his Funky Koval comics.
There was a series of six Red Sonja novels published between 1981 and 1983, all written by the duo of David C. Smith and Richard L. Tierney. Until now I was only aware of three of them--they were not very good. The best thing they had going for them were their covers by Boris Vallejo.
What kind of a world do we live in where Halo gets cancelled and Rebel Moon continues like the Juggernaut charging down a hallway? Halo had problems (some severe) but it was getting there in its own slow roundabout way….
I'm not sure it will continue after this. The Director's Cut is already filmed and paid for, so mind as well put it out for the Snyder-boys to huff their cope-ium. He supposedly has 2 more two-part movies planned to get a "six-part trilogy," but I doubt he will get to do that.
11:28 I absolutely agree about the witcher cover. While I love Peter Jacksons Lord of the Rings, but if I look for lotr art, I especially search for non film art.
That Earthsea cover is gorgeous. I saw Red Sonja at the cinema when it was first released. Its wonderfully campy schlock, with some hilariously terrible acting, wonderful scene chewing, and Arnie couldn't be Conan for rights reasons, but everyone knew he was basically Conan.
I appreciate you saying "the wedding of Spoiler and Spoiler", because although it wasn't a spoiler for me, I was upset for people who have not yet read Stormlight Archive. I think authors need to be more careful with spoiling their own books.
I personally can’t think of a different way to announce the event? If you are a hardcore Sanderson fan you would need a reason to go and pay for an event like this, and if you haven’t read this far… I’m not sure how to tiptoe around then. I’m not asking you come up with one. But at a certain point a media juggernaut reaches a certain cultural relevance where in order to maintain fan engagement, I feel certain sacrifices happen e.g. Game of thrones red wedding. Star Wars- Luke I am your father. Harry Potter. Snape kills Dumbledore.
@@isaacanderson4856 I just click most Sanderson videos because.. You know, I think I just like to hear the guy talk. I didn't really connect what the event was about and completely missed any indicator that there was a reason to worry about spoilers. I should add that as spoilers go, this one was pretty inconsequential in my case. It doesn't seem like a plot point that I'll care in the least about, although I suppose it might turn out to ruin some suspense between where I am in the series and when the event actually occurs (or the characters even meet, in my case). Given that my brain is of the sort that will not remember a tv series cliffhanger through a single sleep, that might not even turn out to be an issue. I've now learned to be more discerning with my clicks, next time I might not be as lucky. :)
The main thing I learned from this video. The quote "holy shitake mushrooms" which I use every chance I get is from Spy Kids. It's a childhood classic of mine but I don't ever recall the quote from there.
The desire I have to go to Dragonsteel Nexus and the wedding is immense. But alas, I am on the east coast and have no money, nor have I flown on a plane EVER (and I don't want my first time to be solo, I have bad anxiety)
I do not mind swords in fantasy covers at all, they feel classic in a way. Elegant weapons for a more civilized age. A dragon's tooth on a mortals hand, they kill, they maim and they rule the land... plus swords are like really sharp guys! On a diffferent note... I am glad I did not watch Rebel Moon part 2 because we knew this Snyder cut was going to happen... rememer when "300" blew our minds?
I remember going to a Ren Faire with my dad as a kid and he left me to go to the bathroom and this lady, a performer working there, was talking to me while my dad was at the bathroom, watching me basically while I was alone. And talking to her was so weird cuz yeah she refused to break character and I really did not enjoy the conversation lol
I'm okay with Arkane getting two seasons, but I want to see Fortische so other shows in the League verse, or one of their alternate universes that they have for their skins.
When will studios learn to stop making a bunch of extra bullshit for something that might not even be good? Just let a thing exist and then if it’s good do more
When Netflix says User Experience, I don't know if they're talking about their programming but their tech. The other apps in comparison are clunky. Netflix has been refined for a while
You're not the only one. I love that they're doing this ball with actors and all.. this extra experience is a really cool idea. I will not be attending if I can help it. Hopefully the girlfriend won't ask cause as cool as the idea is, it sounds like my personal 7th circle of hell.. but if she wants to go, I'll suffer through. Maybe I'll get lucky and she won't hear about it till it's sold out.
Red Sonjia was fleshed out as we know her in that Marvel comic, but she did in fact originate in a Robert E. Howard story. However, it was not a Conan story, nor was it even fantasy. It was a historical fiction story published in the 1930's and set in the Ottoman empire. As for that film, people often assume Arnold is playing Conan, and that you're looking at Red Sonja and Conan on the cover, but he's actually just playing... **checks notes** ... some dude. Sandahl Bergman is in it too, but she also has a new role as some queen character. It was Marvel who really saw Sonja as a character to depict as a barbarian and started lumping her in with Conan, and I think the movie tried to do the same thing without licensing Conan himself. Hers is a strange and confusing history. You should google the posters Robert Rodriguez had made for his shelved Red Sonjia flick featuring a certain Rose McGowan completely devoid of muscles, resting atop a hill of skulls and licking a sword absolutely **drenched** with blood lol.
I'm not a Zach Snyder fan, but my husband is... He got about halfway through Rebel Moon: Pt1 and said, "I'll finish it later..." and never came back to it. 😅
Rebel Moon was very forgetable, I only remember both Daario Naharis a flying horse (maybe) and Sofia Boutela. Iknow there was more, but I have to focus realy hard and I don't really remember the premise of the movie

Daniel just wanted to let you know I love your channel - you always bring a smile to my face and your voice is calming. I am getting back into writing because of you as well. Thank you for all you do!
I hope they do the ramen shop from Yumi in the future! That would be so cool!
Not a big fan of the new mic settings, background hiss is even more pronounced and the sibilance makes the overall sound kind of harsh to my ears. Thank you for the content though, love Fantasy News!
Nice sound. Really brings out the depths of your voice.
You need to wait on that best scenes of 2024 video until Stormlight 5 is released
You know i actually agree with Daniel I prefer the goofy graphic novel cover
My cat is absolutely locked into this episode.
Daniel not LARPing shocks me.
Witcher looking like my retired elementary school teacher.
Lol, I loved the Red Sonja movie. ❤ I also loved the Halo show I am devastated it's camfelled.
Yup. He did covers for the books and comics.
Damn the hate on ren faire vibes was NOT the vibe daniel
The mic setting is goodly luxurious
Sound is great!
11:28 I absolutely agree about the witcher cover.
While I love Peter Jacksons Lord of the Rings, but if I look for lotr art, I especially search for non film art.
Actors not breaking character when spoken to normally weirds me out hard. Never going to a Disney Land
That Earthsea cover is gorgeous. I saw Red Sonja at the cinema when it was first released. Its wonderfully campy schlock, with some hilariously terrible acting, wonderful scene chewing, and Arnie couldn't be Conan for rights reasons, but everyone knew he was basically Conan.
im actually really excited for that witcher classic collection. give it to me
Rebel Moon needs to stop. It might be time to start protesting outside of the Netflix offices.
Lol I almost spit out my coffee at big booba 😂
@5:59 Daniel: “Skibidi Fantasy”, literally.
In the director's cut of the movie, the grain is covered in semen and viscera as they harvest it.
Geralt got the the pringles guy mustache on his forehead.
@isaacanderson4856 That's a great explanation, thank you! I have not considered maintaining fan engagement.
@mascot4950 It's definitely not a major spoiler and I do believe Sanderson would never spoil an important plot point or twist.
You just need to make a visually interesting sword preferably with a nice looking background.
100% here for the DSL and high pony tail lol
Hi Jackson 👋🏼 I like your sweater!
11:30 I wasn't ready. 😅
Red Sonja looks fantastic!!!
Nah the Witcher comic art is good. It's a goofy design, but it reminds me of Moebius.
thank you for ripping into this synder rebel moon scam
The Red Sonja movie honestly looks awesome.
When will studios learn to stop making a bunch of extra bullshit for something that might not even be good? Just let a thing exist and then if it’s good do more
When Netflix says User Experience, I don't know if they're talking about their programming but their tech. The other apps in comparison are clunky. Netflix has been refined for a while
Mic settings were velvety 👌
Nothing says "Hard Pass" more than "reinvented for a Nu-Generation("Modern Audience")". LOL!
I snorted at the 'superior' line!
I guess we won't invite The Goblin to our Larp here in Boston....
Rebel Moon was very forgetable, I only remember both Daario Naharis a flying horse (maybe) and Sofia Boutela. Iknow there was more, but I have to focus realy hard and I don't really remember the premise of the movie
