    I've been rowing for decades and keep going back and forth on using and not using oar rites. This convinced me to just keep them on....the elbow thing was the selling point. Thanks so much for an informative video - look forward to seeing your new shop!

      Thank you so much for checking this out. We also like having our oars indexed so we don't miss a stroke when in a tricky area.

    Good points!
    You want to be seated so, that you can move your body both back and forth: you do not row that much with your arms, you row especially with your body.
    This oar lock system is antiquated; that is why the oar rights are needed. Modern oar locks, which can be found today even on cheap boats (such as the Intex Mariner 3 or 4), keep the oars so, that they rotate exactly as you need them to do so you can row with your mind elsewhere (video call home, scenery, potential dangers, etc.).
    Professional rowers have the oar handles overlap (that is, no distance between the oar ends) for maximum rowing efficiency. Rowing, then, takes a little getting used to, but doesn't anything else?

      Professional rower vs. casual boater though, seems to me there’s a big difference between someone who’s primary/sole task is just to row at max effort for long periods, vs. someone rowing casually down a river while fishing. Seems much more likely the professional rower will always be settled into a routine they never deviate from. That really doesn’t apply to casual fishing boaters, does it?

      @@Johnfisher12345, very true. Not the case here, though: this is not a one-person fishing boat; the man rowing will only row.
      Being able to get into a routine is important no matter what boat you are on; there will always be longer distances to cover between rapids or fishing sessions.

    I like the oar rites. That's been a problem for me and now I know how to fix it! Thanks for that.
    Question: How do you calculate how long the oars should be?

    Love the great info. What is that seat/pad on your dry box? It looks comfortable and has the added advantage of keeping a lower center of gravity than other seat options.

      It is 3 inch minicell foam with a spot for the rower's butt carved out.

      Hey Glenn, I know that Sawyer is overwhelmed with orders this year and I believe all of our oars are already sold with our SOTAR Strike setups but you can contact the shop and see if we have any additional ones coming in. Email our manager - matthew@blackfootriver.com Cheers -JH

    If adding oar locks to a home built row boat, is it alwaysbest at the widest part of the boat? Does it matter on location?
    ( the crossmembers/ seats have not been installed yet). Thanks

    • @blackfootriveroutfitters
      @blackfootriveroutfitters  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I don't think positioning with regards to width is important. Oar position needs to be near the center of the boat in order to maximise ease in pivoting. Our oars are typically slightly back of center. This affords quick pivot while allowing for more control when crabbing. Hopefully this helps. Good luck with your boat.
