Neil Sedaka is a legend but an artist I've never explored. In 1976 I was entering HS and very into hard rock, progressive rock, fusion, and about to start exploring punk. I'm glad you made this video because Sedaka wasn't even on my radar, but after watching his could be some nice music to play around the home.

Neil Sedaka had a an amazing career both as a song writer and as a performer over several decades. His big hit “Laughter In The Rain” has got to be one of the most romantic songs ever. When I first heard it I thought it was a female vocalist the tonality and tenor of his voicing was simply gorgeous. And his ability to sing in a higher key was a perfect complement to Elton John’s vocals on “Bad Blood” which was a great pop rock tune. I hope Fil analyzes those songs, they’re such amazing compositions and arrangements.

    • @ianrobinson4200

Laughter In The Rain his biggest hit but it almost got beaten to the punch. Lea Roberts put out a version of it 2 weeks before Sedaka was due to release his and as soon as he heard it he managed to rush release the single and go straight to #1

What got me to think about him as a singer songwriter and performer is the very fact that Elvis mentioned him at one time about his ability to write, compose and perform. You nailed it Fil. Elvis said the amount of songs this man has written for other people was extremely impressive. I did not realize how many songs he had written for others until doing a little research.

Great performers understand the importance of using Dynamics. That moves the song along stirring the emotions. Anyone can play a song end to end with the pedal to the medal, but true craftsmen use great dynamics. Sedaka was one of them. Great analysis Fil.

One of the artists from the Brill Building in the early '60s. Carol King was a friend & crush of his; wrote, "Oh, Carol" about her. His cousin is Eyde Gorme. I thought I knew about the songs of Neil Sedaka. I never have heard any version of this song before. I did a search and there are over 10 performances of this song by Neil available for view. I found this interesting bit. The Andy Williams version of this song was a #4 UK hit in 1973, two years before the Carpenters' version came out. There was a completely different song called "Solitaire" that was a hit for Laura Branigan in 1983. I am a sucker for anything involving an orchestra so I give "Solitaire" a "like". Hmm, I thought I was the only one that had their guitar out for Fil's show.Oh,analysis request. I put a second "plug" in for something from Tommy Boyce Bobby Hart ( of "I Wonder What She's Doing Tonight" fame) Thanks Fil.

It’s still a great song to listen to today.

Neil - singing 10, living the lyrics 10, piano - I wonder how much he had in reserve ie he is playing simply, mostly, with his talent sitting on the shelf (as you also showed in your guitaring). Also used a great technique to slow the chorus way down (to 1/2 time ????)

He's much before my time but I've always had a lot of time for Neil Sedaka. His songwriting output is extraordinary and his performance ability seemed to remain unchanged for decades. An idea for a future video, Fil - apparently a lot of songwriters and singers all came from the same area of New York at roughly, though not necessarily exactly, the same time period. Might be a different type of analysis to look at.

Been a huge fan for pushing fifty years. And a big shout out to Neil for what he has been doing through lock down. Virtually every week day he's done a mini concert of three songs .... well over fifty days and more than one hundred and and sixty songs now and counting .... absolute legend.

When I was a kid in the 1960 and heard Calendar Girl, I was hooked on the melody and the fast beat. The progression of the colorful monthly sayings were so easy to listen to, I thought he was singing to me! “February, you’re my little Valentine.” Thank you, Fil, you took me way back to the great Neil Sedaka and his wonderful performance, for whatever he sang, it was great-and melodically catchy!

He is such a good musician! I practiclarly like his 70s comeback song Laughter in the Rain. It's very upbeat and well performed! Could you do an analysis of Poco when Timothy B Schmidt , Richie Furray and Rusty young were in the band. Or an earlier song with Randy Misner on base and high harmony singing instead of SchmidtTY

In the mid 70s, during his "comeback", I was 15 or 16. While kids my age were into Frampton or Zeppelin, I was into Neil. I just recently started listening to him again. One of my favorite singer/songwriters.

Between Neil Diamond and Neil Sedaka you have walking jukeboxes. I have a hard time naming one Neil Sedaka song since he made so many, but there were so many people that he collaborated with that it added to his legend. I have to smile since you end every show with Rock, and yet this is one of the most amazing ballads with a vocal control that will melt your face. And your vocal ability adds to the analyses without stealing the spotlight from the artist.
Their is a vocal coach that does videos but I cannot watch them since he has such a nasty approach to analyzing songs. He wants to show what he can do all the time. You are the perfect side man, propping up the person you are analyzing. Since Neil is doing lockdown videos, maybe he can give his feedback to your analyses?
