  • Apple makes it pretty easy to migrate to a new Mac from an old one. In this video, I walk you through the migration process. Both Macs must be running macOS Sierra or later.

Excellent clear video warning of issues that could arise that other videos didn’t cover. Thank you 🙏 ☺️

You make it sound so simple! I have an iMac from mid 2010 and a Macbook that's a year older, and I'm running them both on Yosemite (crazy!); I want to trade them both in and get a new iMac but the thought of it makes my stomach turn. I backup each of these devices to separate external hard drives which are equally ancient but still have plenty of spare space. But where to start?

Very informative. But I'm moving up from an Intel based iMac, to a Mac studio. So for something like Lightroom/Photoshop, would it not be better to download the latest version of those programs rather than moving them over from the old computer? I've been led to believe that the newer versions can take advantage of some features not available to the older Intel based models.

What about after mac has been set-up. I missed the screen for migration/time machine and now I can't get my machine to go into restore more (Keyboard does not sync fast enough before reboot). How do I get my old stuff onto new mac?

Does it transfer over the keychain and all saved passwords?

I’m having a very hard time trying to migrate everything to my new Mac. The new Mac keeps disconnecting from the old Mac. I even had them tethered with a thunderbolt cable and it still disconnected. Beside Current Connection it said Thunderbolt, then 5 minutes later it suddenly switched to Wi-Fi, then 5 minutes later it said Connection Lost. Any idea what the problem could be?

If you have a 2015 laptop & a new IMac - would you still to migrate everything?

Sometimes it is wise to just start over. Make sure your files are backed up but start over with fresh settings and install the apps you use as new. I do this every couple of years.

I don’t trust iCloud back-up because I had it running forever (even paying monthly because I had so much! But when I got a new device - the back up didn’t even show 1/2 of my things!

I have had this happen. I always check on the backups to make sure everything is in fact being backed up.
