It works. I could not handle having this malware run in my background and eat away at CPU, forcing me to get updates, and writing things on my disc without my permission. To me this is the definition of malware, when you take away the ability for the user to remove this "protection", it is malware. The best anti-virus is yourself, don't surf shady websites, and don't torrent files.
Yea just don't go to shady sites and download some shady torrents, but as someone who pirates stuff i still need a antivirus and i use avast antivirus or AVG after disabling the stupid defender
In latest Windows 10 (2004 ver) The name of Gpedit windows Defender has changed... its now called "Microsoft Defender Antivirus" or smth like it. So change it from there :).

I was checking on my pc it’s not called Windows defender it’s called Microsoft defender. Same steps after that. Hope this helps some of you. Maybe Microsoft changed the name recently

I looked in my registry and the entry is already there and made my gpedit. It really is a shame that all versions of WIndows 10 don't have the group policy editor.

It doesn't work in Windows 10 19H1 build 18362 while adding DWORD DisableAntiSpyware. It says "Error while renaming Value". Restarting to safe mode, make a registry edit (it should make a value), restart to normal mode but it diasappears when I log back in. Any ideas?

I followed your directions but every time I restart or turn on my computer windows defender has turned itself back on and says my antivirus program is turned off. However, when I open up my antivirus program it says its enabled and on. so it seems like both are on except windows says the other is turned off and I have to manually turn it on all the time. As of 2022 this no longer works on Windows 10 Home edition. Windows will erase that key after a few hours. At this time, only Windows 10 Pro users can disable the Defender antivirus

My Avast antivirus gets shut down with Windows Defender - only Windows Defender almost immediately turns itself back on. Defender gets FAR too many false positives and I can't install some disk install software I know is clean. I hate it. I'd rather just run my Avast.
Can someone please help, I did the first suggested steps to this video about a month ago, everything was working fine, and it was successful turning off my built in anti virus on my windows 10. I am starting to have the same problem as before with my app that I've downloaded, and the app freezes and continues to notify me that I need to disable my antivirus on my pc in order for my app to run efficiently, the problem is, that the built in anti virus is still turned off. worked for me: go to gedit and do what video says and install avast, disable all modules, do what you want and enable the modules again
