Another trick you can use, is to create a "standard" (non-administrator) user account for yourself and use that instead of the default user account, which has admimistrator-level privileges on your OS. Viruses piggyback on the accounts that activate them and as they all seek to modify the Kernel, using an account that doesn't have admin privilege prevents them from doing any harm.

The issue with windows defender is not necessarily its ability to detect malware but its ability to remove it and protect itself from the malware. Defender has terrible self protection it can be shutdown with just a few command line commands, its ability to remove malware is also terrible, most common malware it is able to find but that is a bare minimum for an antivirus, and any decent antivirus should be able to detect all prevalent malware threats from the past 10 years whereas defender fails on huge well known ransomware like scarab. The firewall can also be shutdown just as quickly.
It also has numerous bugs all of which I know i will list below all are recent but some may have been patched by this point
Can only detect 30 things per scan more than 30 threats = multiple scans to remove
Elevated privilege bug allows for malware to gain admin rights and bypass UAC
    Numerous remote code execution bugs
    Showing notifications for nonexistent files
    Removing exclusions after updates
Bugs not allowing it to be reactivated after an antivirus is uninstalled
    The list goes on
There is simply no reason to use defender of something better like bitdefender, kaspersky or sophos free.
As for the av test scores almost everything on av test is able to score a 100 or close to it products that definitely can't block 100% new malware samples
I have personally tested windows defender and seen it be used on heavily infected systems where it has done nothing to fix the problem

Now, Defender hasn't totally stolen the spotlight away from the McAfees and the Bitdefenders of the world. You could chalk that up to decades of name recognition for competitors, but testing has revealed some notable shortcomings in Windows Defender. We found that the SmartScreen filter in Edge blocked just 68 percent of phishing sites, for example. That's particularly bad compared with the 89 and 90 percent blocked by Firefox and Chrome. In those tests, Kaspersky and McAfee blocked 100 percent of the phishing sites.-pc magazine

Saw this video yesterday and it's the first time I have come across anything advocating using Windows Defender, other than Microsoft's own advertising. I am only a domestic user, with backups, so I would be ok if something did "get through" the defences, but the biggest thing I've noticed since uninstalling the free Avast AV is how much my system speeded up! I'm on an 8 year old laptop but I did upgrade it to an SSD and maxed out on the RAM with 12 GB. I don't know if that's significant.

    • @scissorbeaksgames8208
      @scissorbeaksgames8208 2 ปีที่แล้ว

Yes, switching from an HDD to an SSD will definitely see a "speed increase" (lower latency) in your system. The 12 GB of RAM also helps. You made three changes to your system at the same time, I assume, and saw a speed increase. In order of influence; that would be SSD, RAM, antivirus.

But... If you use multiple operating systems an independent anti-virus program might still be a good idea. Kaspersky Total Security is pretty good value and can be used on as many as six separate devices. Not only does it give you a decent antivirus but it also has several other features Windows does not offer. Personally, I prefer third party anti-virus because I have seen it catch viruses that Windows never found. Microsoft may make a good virus scanner now but I have no assurance how long that will last. One of the privileges of running multiple operating systems is that you can use different virus scanners to scan all the drives on your PC. I could care less if Microsoft paid someone to rate them a thousand out of thousand. I'm still going to run independent software that has already been tried and tested and proven superior. I will always treat Microsoft virus protection as a last resort.

    • @AlDunbar

It's kind of funny because sometimes I feel like the Maytag repair man. I'll fix their PC and 5 years later I'll ask them how's it running and they'll say great! :D To be fair, I have had Microsoft catch a virus on a different drive running a different virus scanner on a different operating system. It's rare, but it happens. So ideally, if you can manage it, a triple boot with a different AVS on each operating system would be ideal. For example, you can run Windows 11 with Microsoft AVS, Windows 10 with Kaspersky, and Windows 8.1 with Avast. All of these on the same PC, on separate drives will afford you the privilege of running seperate AVS to scan each and every drive (including your storage drives) without any conflicts as each virus scanner is on a different operating system.

Ive been using Defender over the years but with the newer versions of Windows theres been enlist issues with crashes etc. I thought it was Malware but scans always come up clean even with third-party Antivirus software like Trend Micro and Bit Defender. Settings also are just as important and takes just a few minutes to setup and you don't have to pay a cent.

I think Windows Def shines by not nagging the user to constantly upgrade to a premium or paid edition of a particular AV. Dealer with older folks they aren't really ready to close the nag messages down thinking it's something that requires their immediate attention.

I have bitdefender, I used to hate antivirus so fkijg bad. Now I just love it. It stops so many connections trying to work with my pc. Things I didn’t even know were possible. Without the antivirus they would try to make connection with my pc for example going to google images and looking at pics. Just by browsing it , sites hosting pics would try to start connections to my pc .

I never liked Norton. My company used to supply us with norton to install on client PC's (small workgroup networks) and it caused so many issues (resource hogging, blocking network traffic, etc) that i refused to install it any more. We started using AVG at the time and it worked well. Haven't used Norton since (2005), so I'm not sure how good or bad it is these days?
