  • Koala Sampler is a really cool app for iOS music production that combines simplicity, portability and some powerful feature. One feature is midi mapping to use an external midi controller like the Novation LaunchPad X and/or the LaunchKey Mini MK3. If you’re looking to expand your sample making, patterns and performances a controller might be your next step. This video explains for to do the midi mapping and possible custom configurations for Koala’s layout using the Novation Components software. There are some great ways to improve your workflow and productivity, and there are some shortcomings as not everything in Koala is midi mappable {is that a word?}

    Nice walk through! That's cool having access to all 32 samples at once.

      You can access all 64 samples as well. I set up 32 on drums section and other 32 on keys section. As they all work with the piano mode in Koala, I have a full spectrum of sounds.
      I only need the second and 3rd octaves for piano.

      I like GrooveBox but I run into limitations pulling my work into other DAWs for full arrangements and complete songs. Are you using any other iOS apps with Koala and GrooveBox?

      If I recall, Push was not an inexpensive device. Might as well use it.

      @@JeffyG Right, and I for like $100 at the beginning of the "Pandemic" when people were selling every thing they had to buy Toilet paper. A decent licensed version of Abelton is also expensive (for Me) so lets see what happens with Koala. Thanks for the upload and the response.

    Thanks, really helpful to see the options and limitations of using these controllers with Koala. I've been thinking about a midi controller e.g. to have access to the effects without having to switch screens. The free app, Bluetooth Midi Controller, seems to let me do that from a second iPhone/iPad - albeit on a phone the virtual sliders are very close together and they're also slower to operate than a physical knob or slider. There's a similar app that gives 16 pads, which is a bit easier to control on a small screen.

      That's interesting...I see lots of used mini keyboards (usb) for $50 - $100. You can't beat that price!

  • @foryou2728
    @foryou2728 ปีที่แล้ว

    Is there a specific mode the launchkey needs to be in to get the pads to map? When I’m in mapping mode it looks like it’s working and I see the Cc values changing, but it never “sticks”. Once I exit mapping the pads all play the one sample inplayed last. Is this something I need to do in components?

      @@JeffyG i am ising a korg kross 1 61 key version. It has a USB B port, i have a usb b to usb c cable, i am (unfortunately) using an android tab (xiaomi mi pad 4 plus on android 8.1). But i dont thonk it's not that of an issue since i can use other midi apps normally. Ive been using modi commander since 2018 as a patch switcher to make my keys act like a kronos set list.
      What i find an issue with this app(tho i know it can be improved) tho is that it doesnt have any indication that your midi device is detected like how it is in midi commander where KORG INC-KROSS shows up on the notifications bar that it is indeed connected and detected. Here on koaka, if i go to settings > midi > mapping > start mapping, it only shows "no notes" something on the midi notes list. So i have to assume that my device, despite being connected, is not detected perhaps.
      Another problem i have is, i load my audio sample on the first and second tile (upper row) on the samples page but when i go to the keyboard layout (chromatic), my first sample is mapped to c3. It sounds if i press on the virtual keys but it doesnt if i press the actual c3 on my keys. What i would'e eanted is to map the samples close to each other so that i can press them simultaneously while playing "wild boys" with the band (i have the chant/shout parts sampled)

      @@JeffyG just an update:
      I tried the app on my Android 12 xiaomi phone just a while ago and mapping and triggering the samples on keys WORKS. So i am surprised why it doesnt work on my android 8 tablet.

    • @JeffyG
      @JeffyG  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Frankly I’m surprised it works at all on Android. That’s beyond my abilities. The way you describe it makes sense, but I don’t know if the tablet OS passes midi note data through the USB port fully. In iOS I have an app called Midi Spy that shows exactly what midi channel, note or CC value is received at the app layer. There is more than just note values expected by Koala Sampler, as velocity and other data comes from the Korg 61 keyboard. Sorry I can’t be more helpful 😢

      @@JeffyG well it's ok. I am just flabbergasted by the fact thay it works on my android 12 phone but not on my android 8 tab that i also use to play iGrandpiano and a DX7 vst app for android. My last resort here is to try to root my tablet to install a custom rom with higher android version on it and see if it would solve the problem. Maybe android 8 just sucks this bad. Lmao

    Quick question, are you powering the mk3 off the ipad?, cause my ipad won’t allow that without an external source. Is there a setup in the mk3 software that allows this? I’m inquiring cause I don’t see an external source in your video. Thanks

    • @JeffyG
      @JeffyG  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes. My 2020 iPad Pro has sufficient power for the MK3, although it does shorten the battery life. The usb hub I have, can be powered and this is necessary when I have multiple usb devices connected.

    Thank you, I was looking at Launchpad Mini vs Launchkey. And right now they have some limitations with midi mapping, so Il pass. I know the developer for Loopy Pro has them on the future update list so Il get them then.

    • @UKULELERIGA
      @UKULELERIGA ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I changed my mind :D and the Launchpad Mini is fun to use with Koala. I would like 4 custom modes instead of three, to setup sample manipulation in one as well. But probably will figure something out in the process. The customization options are pretty cool and a lot easier to do, then it looks at first glance.

    Hey my iPad can’t power the launchkey mini by itself, so I have to plug into wall. I see that you don’t, is that because you have an iPad with USBc instead of lightning?

    • @JeffyG
      @JeffyG  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Good question. My 2020 iPad Pro has usb c and seems to have enough power for the LaunchKey Mini, or my Launchpad X, or my Rode NT-USB Mini, but not enough power for all at the same time. I have a small 4 port USB hub that works with or without a power supply. When it’s plugged in (USB Micro Jack) it provides enough power for all the devices and keeps the iPad charged.

    • @davidstephen1753

      @@JeffyG interesting, I think I saw somewhere that lightning doesn’t have enough juice to power a keyboard so you need an adapter so you can power and connect via Usb at same time. Offical Apple adapter device doesn’t have a third port, audio out for sound,.. what gives Apple?! I love iOS music production but the constant cabling issues is giving me PTSD
