Alarming trends in stimulant use in kids

  • GAINESVILLE, Fla. ---Two-thirds of young people surveyed said the use of prescription stimulants is a moderate-to-large problem among youth, according to a new University of Florida study. Nearly 15 percent said they had used a prescription stimulant, the study shows, and almost 12 percent reported diverting medications by giving their stimulants to a peer or taking someone else's pills.
The National Monitoring of Adolescent Prescription Stimulants Study involved surveys of more than 11,000 youth ages 10 to 18 from urban, rural and suburban areas in and around 10 U.S. cities. It is the first national study to monitor prescription stimulant use in both preteens and teens, including non-medical use, with significant details for each topic. The study findings appear in the September issue of the journal Current Opinion in Psychiatry.
Other studies have documented teens and college students using prescription stimulants non-medically as "study drugs" to enhance concentration. Stimulants such as Ritalin, Adderall and Concerta are typically prescribed to help patients with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder stay focused and to control behavior problems. But when the drugs are taken incorrectly or without a prescription, they can increase blood pressure, heart rate and body temperature and decrease sleep and appetite, according to the National Institute on Drug Abuse. At high doses, they can lead to cardiovascular problems.

They're a minority, and the people in question could be abusing anything in principle. Noone with a functioning life structure will seek to use or even abuse drugs. This is not a fault on the drug, but the user, and really on the one who judges the situation, or fails to do so.
My money is in the basket that says; this video was *placed* and the narrative *forced*. Many can and do have progressive and constructive relations with drugs. Stimulants included.
Personally im prescribed via gov. controlled products and diagnosis. It's changed my life, or well more specifically, it changes my ability to interface and act with life when i take stimulants. In principle there would have been no need for this diagnosis and prescription process, were the drug legal and controlled on a free market. Im sure many others could benefit similarly or even more greatly.
I will not attest against the benefits of proper diagnosis and drug treatment, but if the drug's damaging effects (for 'friends who are being shared with') are not outweighed by the 'healing'(this is highly figurative) effects that others, why should it be for me, or everyone else who is doped daily, via government controlled prescription.
A critical perspective sees, that this narrative attains nothing but a restriction of market availability. (Pharm. Companies have HUGE advances on the production and sale of these substances. Most the time they are *very* easy to mass produce, and 100% safely so)

I don't have adhd, but have enjoyed abusing medical amphetamines when I was like 18. I wish I could legally buy like 10mg adderall tablets over the counter for an infrequent euphoric buzz.

Amphetamines work for everybody. But not everybody can be prescribed them. Like me. Doctor prescribes me 20mg I’m taking 90. It’s literally impossible for me to take the stuff properly. It works so good for me and gives my brain the reuptakes it needs but only in high amounts

@Seljak Magnum It depends on the person. I like coke more than adderall but like adderall more than Concerta/Ritalin.
But people react differently. Some prefer Concerta over Adderall.

Aside from addiction, I think teens get into different things. If their behavior is unhealthy or out of proportion I think there should be focus on changing the entire family unit. Whatever is causing that in the teen is part of the whole family. Make real life more meaningful and complete :)
Our connections are a vital/core part of our existence. If the connections are off we are off.
