Instagram- more on skin care tips and product reviews
Vitamin C or ascorbic acid is a member of skin actives - namely A, B, C and E. This skin care product is not for everyone. Most dermatologists will start you on Vitamin A or retinol, adding Vitamin B, then C as tolerated. Most skin care companies will have a Vitamin C product line ranging from 10%, all the way to 20%.
    SKIN SCIENCE
Ascorbic acid has been shown to decrease pigmentation via inhibition of tyrosinase- the enzyme that produces melanin. Melanin accounts for the colour of skin. Ascorbic acid is also a free radical scavenger, decreasing UV induced ‘stressors’. Vitamin C is also a key vitamin in the synthesis of collagen.
    TEXTURE / FEEL
The Ordinary makes a cosmetically elegant ascorbic acid cream/ lotion. Goes on easy, easily blended.
    EASE OF USE
In the scheme of skin care, Vitamin C can sometimes be challenging to apply. The acidic nature of this vitamin is needed for better bioavailabity and absorption. Ideally the pH formulation should be 2-2.5 pH. What this means is that in patients with sensitive skin, irritation can occur- see below for caution.
    CAUTION
Remember, vitamin A and C can be irritating in sensitive skin types including rosacea, dermatitis and allergy prone individuals. IMO Vitamin C should be the last ‘skin active’ in your routine. As always, if in doubt, test patch the product before applying to your face.
    PACKAGING
The Ordinary ascorbic acid comes well packaged in a light proof air-tight tube. Protection from UV and air is essential for optimal biological effects.
    PRICE
As always, The Ordinary comes in at a super competitive price.
FINAL THOUGHTS- Dr Davin S. Lim
IMO Vitamin C is the very last vitamin to add to your routine. The majority of my vitamin C prescriptions involve combining this active with other actives such as hydroquinone and or glycolic acid. In this context, vitamin C acts to stabilise the other actives and reduces oxidation. Once again, ascorbic acids should be used in caution if you have sensitive skin and or compromised epidermal barrier.

Apply ascorbic acid (vit C) during day time. vit C come from fruits n vegetables is an active ingredient (stabile nature) that very powerful antioxidant form among other group of Vitamin and its important for ur skin connective tissue which is help prevent damages from radical of uv rays and another hand which niacinamide alternate to apply this at night time which this acid works well for skin prone acne, reduce pigmentation and skin declaration. Dont ever use to apply them layering. Both acid has different functions. If u apply layering them together, niacin could kill the vit C since its form nature and u cant get the result of vit C benefit even u use for years of product. Same goes for another acid such AHA & BHA and not to mention is Retinol where those of acids do not mix use together in layering with Vit C. Always listen to ur skin whatever that you apply on it.

Good day Dr Davin. Thank you for the informative videos. I have some nagging questions that are bothering me. You see, there's this celebrity dermatologist who claims that it is not beneficial to use moisturisers and that we should completely stop using them (unless you live in a cold place or country). She claims that it is better to exfoliate daily (either chemical or physical), then follow up with using retinol or Vit C, and then that's it - no moisturisers involved. She said that this is because moisturisers retain dead skin cells by creating a layer in our skin resulting to clogged pores. She also claims that she has been using Vit A since she was 12 years old. I'm curious what you think about this. Is the claim against moisturisers true and is 12 years old too young or just the right age to start using Vit A? Also, how safe is it exfoliate on a daily basis? Thank you for your time!

Dynamite Dynamite at night the Vit C in Suspension 23%. It is a little grainy, which is why I use at night. If it’s too strong for you at first, mix with a little NMF until your skin is used to it.
I also like The Ordinary MAP 10%, during the day under sunscreen. This has a lovely texture 👍

So I've been using vitamin c only (after face wash and toner) on my face for a few months now when I ran out of and got tired of resupplying the other things I usually put on. To my surprise, adult acne healed faster, haven't got new breakouts, PIH got lighter, and I feel like I don't get sick as much anymore even when people are coughing/sneezing at my face. This works for me.

I wasn't able to hear even half of what you were saying because there's an echo in this video. Maybe you could adjust the sound? Maybe I missed it, but is that a cream or serum? I have really sensitive, reactive, allergic and eczema prone skin but I can tolerate Vitamin C. I do use a hydrating essence and toner, followed by Differin (as my retinol), then Drunk Elephant TLC Glycolic serum, and their Vitamin C serum right after that. I heard it helps it absorb better and it has really made a difference using it this way.

I bought the Freshly juiced vitamins by Klairs / wishtrend. Waou ! I am 50yo, with good quality oily thick skin, no wrinkles, but with some big pores on my nose. My big pores are cicatrizing ! I can not believe it. For my skin, layering does not work. Overnight alone is great. before a serum, vitamins, then SPF, is not as efficient. But it is incredible ! I also tried mandelic acid, even better, without the glow given by Vit C.

Thank you for the great review and video on vit c. I would like to ask about this big hoo haa on blue light claiming to be even more damaging than uva. Is this true and if it’s for concern what are the ingredients that we should be looking for in an spf now w this new guy in town. Some websites claim antioxidants again there are no spf number factors or broad spectrum pa pluses to indicate the amount of blue light ‘cover’ I am practically sitting tight and waiting for the main brands who manufacture spf to respond with a new launch perhaps. The claimed blue light spfs here are s$75 and s$250 onwards which to me hey we need to use a certain amount that’s just too pricey.

I can add the retinol and Niaminacide. No problem. Still trying to find a Vit C that isn’t grainy, oily or stinks or doesn’t absolutely nothing? I need a morning canvas so my makeup doesn’t make me accentuate wrinkles, look shiny or make my pores larger? Maybe niaminacide, peptides sunscreen ? HA makes makeup, float on surface of your skin and you look textured! It is not smooth Makeup moves...trying more products

But The Ordinary never uses airless packaging, only dropper bottles and tubes, so that is not good for Ascorbic Acid, Retinol and Granactive Retinoid, right? Grant Industries the manufacturer of Hydroxypinacolone Retinoate recommends airless packaging.
