Helloooo amazing people! We hope you enjoyed the video! Just thought we leave a quick note: this is just a very general set of guidelines for anyone wanting to start out with actives in their skincare routine, so we chose active combinations that we feel are best for beginners. 🤩 But this isn’t to say that you should follow the guideline to a T! Everyone’s skin is different and can even react well with ingredient combos that we didn’t mention here! So if you’re already someone who regularly incorporates actives in your routine, we encourage you to continue doing what you do since your skin is reacting super well to it! Hope this helps clear things up a bit! And as always, thank you soo much for your amazing support! 😘
Thank you for shedding a light onto us skincare rookies! 😊 I just would like to know more about copper peptides and bakuchiol and how to layer treatments. For example, I read somewhere else that treatments should be used after moisturizers, is that true? For example, I use Youth to the people's Kombucha + 11% AHA Exfoliation Power toner and then, Herbivore's prism serum, then I use Peter thomas roth retinol serum and then Youth to the people's Superberry hydrate + glow dream mask and lastly Ole henriksen's Youth activating oil. Now, I would like to incorporate the new Peter Thomas Roth Pro Strength Niacinamide Discoloration treatment. In what order could I layer this with my skincare routine?
Here are my detailed notes on everything (because I was that bored) *Getting to know the key active ingredients:* Vitamin A (Retinoids/Retinols): - Antioxidants - Increase cell turnover (smooth out fine lines & wrinkles) - Even texture - Kill acne-causing bacteria - Side effect includes drying => Pair well with moisturizer - Not necessary until 25 years of age Vitamin B3 (Niacinamide): - Produced by our body to transform carbohydrates into energy - Help all sorts of skin conditions (dullness & pore size) - Balance sebum production & texture - Less acidic than Vitamin C (4.5 pH level) Vitamin C (l-ascorbic acid): - Brightening effect - Promote elastin & collagen production in the dermis layer - Derivatives: tetrahexyldecyl ascorbate, ascorbyl glucoside, magnesium ascorbyl phosphate => Better for sensitive skin Alpha Hydroxy Acid (AHA): - Fruit/milk-derived chemical exfoliants that are water-soluble - Slough off excess dead skin cells - Unclog pores and even out skin tone (help with black & white heads) - Common AHAs: glycolic acid (most potent), lactic acid (best for sensitive skin), tartaric acid, mandelic, and citric acid Beta Hydroxy Acid (BHA): - Chemical exfoliants that are oil-soluble - Control sebum production - Smooth and minimize the look of enlarged pores *Combining active ingredients:* Hyaluronic Acid + Vitamin C => Extra synergistic boost (brightening & hydrating) => Help with dehydrated skin Azelaic Acid + Vitamin C => Azelaic acid calms inflammation, kills acne-causing bacteria & treats post-acne marks => Paired with Vitamin C for amplified efficacy Vitamin A (retinol) + Vitamin B3 (niacinamide) => Great combo for sensitive skin => Niacinamide helps dilute the potent effects of retinol => Help to stimulate ceramide production in the skin (ceramides are lipids that hold our skin together) Vitamin B3 (niacinamide) + Vitamin C => Help smooth wrinkles and even out dull, pigmented skin (post-acne marks & hyperpigmentation) Vitamin C + Vitamin E + Ferulic Acid => Stabilize & boost the efficacy of vitamin C => Calm down irritation & nourish skin => Create an ironclad shield that protects skin from the environment & UV rays & stimulating collagen *Layering active ingredients:* Method 1 - Texture & Consistency - Watery products include toners and serums - Creamy products are emollients like moisturizers - Emollients trap water inside & soften the skin outside => Apply products from thinnest (watery) to thickest (creamy) Method 2 - pH Levels - pH scale ranges from 0 - 14, from acidic to alkaline - Too acidic products can cause irritated, red, and inflamed skin - Very alkaline products can cause dry, flaky, and dehydrated skin - Ideal pH level for our skin lies between 4.5 - 5.5 - The lower the pH, the better absorption - Products that are lower in the pH level (pH 2.5-4) : AHA, BHA, Vitamin C => Incorporate first or earlier in the skincare routine - Products that are higher in the pH level (pH 4.5-7): Retinols, Niacinamide, Hyaluronic Acid, Copper Peptides, facial oils (jojoba oil, rosehip oil, etc) => Skin barrier friendly => Apply low pH products before high pH products *Active ingredients for daytime routine: * Vitamin C + Vitamin E + Ferulic Acid (skin protection from UV rays) AHA (for hyperpigmentation, acne marks, overall skin brightening) BHA (for active breakouts) Azelaic Acid Gluconolactone (PHA - a milder form of AHA) Cleansing Vitamin C AHA or BHA or azelaic acid (toner or serum) Moisturizer SPF sunscreen *Active ingredient for nighttime routine:* Retinols (helps with cell regeneration) Retinols shouldn’t be used during the day due to its photosensitivity nature Method 1: Cleansing Retinols Moisturizer Method 2: (preferable for beginners to retinols) Cleansing Hyaluronic/Niacinamide Retinols Moisturizer Tips: Pilling: flaky shits that appear on your skin after you apply products Pilling occurs when your skincare doesn’t absorb into your skin Give your skin an extra 10-30 seconds to allow the product to absorb Applying products on damp skin helps better absorption Personal note: According to dermatologists, ALWAYS apply Retinol on dry, moisturized skin.
How I wish someone would create an app that we could put all of our products and a routine would lol up. I.E. This is better at night. If you use this at night, then use this in the a.m. Etc. Yes, I'm only dreaming...but wow would that be helpful!!!
Girl delete this comment and make this app yourself and make that $$$$ lol if I knew how to develop an app which I could prob do if I wasn’t in school or lazy I would! Lol
*Guide:* *Hyaluronoc acid + Vitamin C* For hydration and skin brightening *Azelaic acid + Vitamin C* For discoloration and skin brightening *Retinol + Niacinamide* For calming sensitive skin to retinol and increase ceramide production *Niacinamide + Vit C* For fine lines, brightening skin, and hyperpigmentation/post acne marks *Vit C + Vit E + Ferulic acid* For calming irritation, nourishing the skin and protecting skin from the environment
What about the skin that have all these problem and concerns that requires you to use bunch of ingredients, products combination an all. will it work well because it's confusing to think where to start and what to use?
@@MJ-pl8lh By Paula’s choice do you mean their BHA? Because using a BHA and a vitamin C in the same routine is very intense and will possibly give you irritation
If you are using the Ordinary niacinamide + zinc, they instructed not to use it together with a vitamin c serum because the zinc in their formulation would react with vit c. Other niacinamide products are fine I guess.
It's important to note that if you are not allergic to either Vitamin C or Niacinamide, you won't have a harmful "reaction" if you do this combo. The issue is that some of the ingredients used in their niacinamide + zinc serum cancel out vitamin c serums, so you are actually just throwing money and product away.
I was told that when you combined vitamin c with niacinamide none of the ingredients do their job as they supposed to do. Well I personally preferred using vitamin c at the morning and niacinamide at night. I have been with this routine for almost a year and it works amazing
They don’t recommend their “pure vitamin C” ie l Ascorbic acid or the suspensions. However a vit c derivative like the magnesium Ascorbyl Phosphate is completely fine to use
Lauren Redman thank you! I was kinda worried that I have been doing it wrong because I always put the Niacinamide and zinc serum and then the magnesium Ascorbyl phosphate and I thought I gotta throw it out for a sec

Succes Succes Note Vit C can comes with / without water/ oil. It’s more complicated to choose the right vit c to mix. Maybe just use ur fav vit c and wait at least 20 mins to use other matching products.
omg i so wanna know how AHAs and Niacinamide work together. i wanted to introduce glycolic acid to my routine for little bumps and acne spots but i already use niacinamide in the morning and a BHA at night. im confused as to how to incorporate an AHA like glycol in.
I have been using this vitamin C face serum by rice berry littleextra for a few months now, and I'm truly impressed with the outcomes. It's become an essential part of my everyday skincare regimen. Over time, the serum has noticeably reduced the size of my pores and faded dark spots. It's excellent for my sensitive skin. One of its standout features about this serum is its light, non-greasy texture. It absorbs quickly, making my skin feel refreshed without any greasy residue. I definitely recommend it to anyone who wants a brighter, more even complexion, particularly with the benefits of black rice water. This serum is gentle enough even for sensitive skin. After applying the face serum, I follow up with rice berry sunscreen, which contains niacinamide and kojic acid, These have helped me even further reduce dark spots. Also, practicing yoga daily helps maintain my skin's elasticity.
Thanks to you guys i am finally mastering my skincare routine and im ALMOST acne free 😭😭😭❤️ ive been struggling with hormonal acne, since HIGHSCHOOL! Im now in my mid 20s and im finally getting the flawless complexion ive dreamed of ❤️❤️❤️❤️ love you guys!
*The following are notes I took during the video* Ph-layering: - Aha, Bha, Vit C - Hylaronic Acid, Copper Peptides, Vit A, Plant oils Morning: - Vit C serum (defense uva, uvb, free radicals) - Aha, bha, azelaic acid (pha) (Vit c + aha/bha/azelaic acid) Night: -Vit A (fragile while exposed to dun, so night, - Hylaroic Acid/Vit B3 then Vit A
This is an eye opener. It couldn't have come at a better time. Was looking for products to try during this quarantine period. Thankyou boss lady. So educative.
Yes I used Adapalene for acne when I was 19. I didn't know it also helps against wrinkle. I guess she is referring to those who are younger than 25 and doesn't have acne. The side effects outweigh the benefits.
I'm a straight guy, I don't use make or any such thing. My gf was talking about all this and i wanted understand the chemistry and use some products that have the above listed chemicals. What a beautifully presented video... Thanks. Just subbed. Hello from bangalore. GOD bless. 🙏🏻😊
the more i want to know about skin care, i get more confused.. because we need everything but they dont work together.. lolsss. WHAT SHOULD I USE THEN???
I would try watching Skincare by Hyram here on TH-cam. he says all regiments need 1. Cleanser 2. Treatment 3.moisturizer and 4 Sunscreen. I find his videos easier to digest and navigate.
I just want to thank you. I suffered from a breakout because I moved to a different country. I watched this video a year ago and now I almost have clear skin!
This is literally everything 😩!! This video helped me put my skin care routine together. I never had acne until I hit my 20s and I have sensitive skin, plus I get acne scars easily. I really think this will work! I can’t wait to try my new routine! thank you!
I feel like I am watching a nicer and softer version of Crash Course, but in a skincare course ;) Edit: Omg, thank you all for the likes, was not expecting to relate to so many people😆💕
Love how you explain al these active ingredients. Honestly this breakdown is the easiest way anyone has broken down these skin care active ingredients. Awesome video!
When i started using niacinamide toner, moisturizer, vit C serum and hyaluronic cream helps a lot my skin to reduce pores, blackheads, dark spot and became more brighter, and smooth
amino acids are essential natural moisturizing factors which the skin produce itself. if you see a word ending in “-ine” on your ingredient list, that’s an amino acid. they are very moisturizing and aid in protecting the skin’s barrier as it’s just giving you more of what your skin already makes and loves :)
I'm 26 and don't have any sort of skincare routine so I'm binging all your videos for information so I can get what I need over Christmas, your videos are very educational and easy to understand, thank you x
Thank you so much for this video! As a newbie to skincare, I've gone down a rabbit hole of videos telling me I need this and that. I have a list that's insanely long of things I WANT to try, and things I NEED to start using. But with everything out there, I feel paralyzed when I start shopping because I don't know what I can use, when I can use it, what won't work with something else, etc. So thank you thank you for putting everything into layman's terms and helping guide me in the right direction!
Hi, guys. This video format is so amazing and informative. Especially when you separated products on the diagram visually by the groups and Ph levels. Make so much more sense now 🥰
I'm blown away! I'm a newbie in the skincare world, and was looking around for guidance. This video gave answers to all the questions I had in my head. Instantly subscribed! Thank you!
My skin has never looked better! My heart bursts at the seams from how much I love you two, you’re one of my favourite things in the world 🥰 I really want to try the seabuckthorn moisturiser from Purito but it’s 70% vitamin c. I already use retinol and niacinamide I’m scared to venture into vitamin c territory ahh 😦
Azeliac acid (from the ordinary) has been my holy Grail after struggling many years with adult acne and comedonal acne. My skin has never looked better and after failed after failed product I can't believe how this one product has completely changed my skin (and my life!)
How do you use the azelaic acid? I put I on directly after my bha serum and wait for 10 minutes before I apply the next produxt. but the azelaic acid from TO always feels super dry on my skin.
@@Konocha I use it morning and night after washing my face. I use a pea sized amount only on the problematic areas of my face and pat in really well. I find that using it on the other areas of my skin that are acne free (like my forehead) it can be more drying. Then I use my moisturizer afterward, I always put the azelaic acid on my face as the first ingredient after I wash
So glad we could help!! Hope some of the ingredients mentioned were the ones you were wondering about! But as always, this is just a general guide and the most important thing is to test on yourself and get to know our own skin the best hehhe! Thanks so much for watchinggg, much love! ✨😊- fel
This is the best guide ever! TH-cam algorithm is reading my mind: I have been browsing Paula's Choice Acne products and got confused over all these AHA, BHA, C and Retinol..... How do you even use that?!! This video summarises this very well! thank you very much for taking care of our skin :-)
Started an extensive skincare routine and currently am going through purging. While I was aware of this outcome I am glad I found this channel to get a better grasp about the ingredients without losing myself in too much information 🤩
Oh, and my name is also Felicia! I am 55 though and just starting to pamper myself due to acne and dreaded wrinkles! Loved this video so much AND the notes people wrote below!
I did the layer routine for a couple months and my skin breakout. I did cleanse toner essense then moisture. I came back to just cleanse and moisture and my skin now feels great I am using essense once every two days at night. So simple is best.
When do we apply these? Before the toner? Before the moisturizer? And how often should we be using these? Sorry, I'm new to skincare and I'm trying to figure out when/how to use Ordinary haha
This video is amazing, my skin is gunna be literally glowing and the best it’s ever been come 2024, can’t wait to put this information from this video to use in my skincare routine
I'm coming back to this after finally purchasing active ingredients, and months of researching to say: I FINALLY UNDERSTAND EVERYTHING YOU'RE SAYING. :D OMG. I was so lost when I first stumbled onto this video. Now I'm proudly nodding hahaha.
I’d love a video from you two on PEPTIDES! What the different peptides do- long term vs very short temporary effects. As always love the informative understandable content! Xoxo
This is literally the most helpful video I've found. I'm a noob with these acids because I'm now 25 trying to prevent any aging coming my way lol. I didn't know you can use vitamin C with AHA/BHAs. Every article I've read says not to.
I’ve been having sudden breakouts for the past few weeks now and I want to explore and get to know these ingredients. This channel have been my go-to whenever I need a skin care knowledge. Thank you!!! It feels like i’m watching a webinar ❤️
Best video ever! All essential information compressed in 1 video with the how's. I wish this was the very first video I saw when I started with my abc's, Thank you!
One of the best skincare ingredient and combination videos, which is based on years of research and previously proven research. Great work and I wish more content creators actually watched this before giving wrong advice.
Im so excitedd, thank you beauty within for helping me forming a good skincare routine. I learned a lot from your video's!🥰 And the funny thing is that i'm a 14 year old boy🙃😂
Awww thank YOU for being a part of our fam and wanting to learn more about your skin and skincare routine! It's never too early to start and we wish we started younger like you! Stay awesoomme hehe 😍- fel
I have been into skin care for a while and know quite a bit BUT it is always soooooo refreshing and helpful to go over the key points again and expand my knowledge! Thank you so much guys - this helped me out a lot ♡
I used to layer up retinol, niacinamide, vit c & peptides for over 10 years until I was adviced by my dermatologist that I could apply all ingredients to face and massage gently until absorbed. Mixing all at once saves lots of time as opposed to layering where you apply one ingredient at a time and wait to semi dry before ypu can apply other ingredients and wait to semi dry in between ingredients. But be mindful that skincare is very personal. What works for me may not work for others. It's very important to really know your skin. I also use AHA & BHA once a week. I'm almost 60 and I have zero fine lines or wrinkles without botox or facelift. But I started some serious skincare in my teens. My siblings & friends used to tease me for overly vain but my skincare is less than 15 minutes and I figured if I was going to do skincare, I might as well do it right & use all active ingredients that was needed on my super oily skin. Now, my friends & family that are 6 years younger than me are now wrinkled. It's very important to use sunblocking lotion and I use a very generous amount of moisturizer especially at bedtime. I heard from Dr. Drey that Cetaphil hand & body can be used as facial moisture. 591 ML, 2 bottles for about $14 at Costco... it will last for about over a year. I owe Dr. Drey tons of gratitude for saving me serious money because it's by far more effective than Clinique & Lancome 180 ML for $180-$200+. Another proof just because it's ridiculously expensive is more effective.. Cetaphil is very cheap but by far more efficient. My siblings won't apply anything on their face not unless it's from a high end brands. I was able to convinced them to try the Cetaphil hand & body lotion even for just 1 day. The rest is history. They all are converted to Cetaphil and couldn't believe that they wasted thousands of dollars over the years.
@@abigailalvarez2939 I think the laneige cream skin refiner is a good one. Also, cosrx cetella water alcohol-free toner and i'm from rice toner work pretty well on sensitive skin.
She says you don't even have to think about using retinol before your 25 but I was struggling with pimples for a couple weeks due to using something that irritated my skin pretty badly and while just about everything else kept it the same for the most part, retinol was the first thing that started calming my skin down
god what is great job have you done. Almost everyone asks for tips about cosmetic products, but I want to say thanks for the very beautiful video, there are a lot of useful details
I’ve loved skincare since I was 12 too I’m now almost 30!:) biggest recommendation would be, dont over do it. Don’t use too many actives and keep a simple routine and ALWAYS wear sunscreen!:)
@@haleymoon657 yep. never over do it . I started being interested in skincare since last year. Im interested in skincare because of my face acne, it use to be worse but now its getting better. I only cleanse, moisturize and wear sunscreen in day time. At night time i cleanse and moisturize. I would use exfoliators twice a week. Keeping the skincare routine simple is very important.
Hi! Thank you for this video! Can you do a part 2?lol include peptides and vitamins C or peptides with retinol? Arbutiin how to layer these with ingredients for best results or q10? Thanks😊
I've watched so many videos the past few weeks! I love this one that explains so much! Grabbed my notebook and stopped and wrote and went back and listened and was so excited! Thanks!
@@chireemiri hey thanks for the great advice! did you mean B12? cause ive never heard of b13... im pretty much vegan and i eat a lot of nutritional yeast for my B12. ill try to add more vitamin D :)
You actually can use them together. I just watched a video on Dr. Cindy Bae on harpers bazaar and she spoke about it. It all depends on how sensitive your skin is and if it can handle it.
You can use them together. It does depend on your sensitivity but the main reason people say not to combine them is because of the differing PH levels. When they mix they can change the efficacy. So they won’t work as well. Btw I’m an esthetician
What's more, you might want to use a vitamin c powder because it's a lot more stable than a serum. The Ordinary and Sokoglam have a vita c powder (The ordinary is like $6-$10 and Soko glam's is like $18-$20) I just got mine from Soko glam and it DID NOT IRRITATE my skin. I was happy as fudge! lol Also check on Sephora for the ordinary.
Don't do that. Use the acids at night and niacinamide in the morning. Mixing them could lower the niacinamide's ph and create niacin which might be very irritating for the skin so don't take the chance by mixing them together.
Ana CG i have a cream that has niacinamide as a higher ingredient in the list, and i bought the paula’s choice 2% liquid exfoliant. can i use them together since niacinamide is just an ingredient in the cream?
Yo I just barely realized this channel used to be, “Asian Beauty secrets.” I never connected the two before. I used to watch Mia’s videos religiously. Whatever happened to her? D:
I'm kinda of a new subscriber so I was curious about that too while binging their videos. I haven't watched all their videos so I'm not sure if I understand the whole situation but Mia and Felicia did an announcement video a while back introducing the new branding and how it would expand to add new hosts. Mia started showing up less and less and in the comments of another video people were saying she moved back to Australia:(
I read this on “the ordinary“ website: Ideally Vitamin C in the PM and this formula(niacinamide+zinc) in the AM. Otherwise, Niacinamide can affect integrity of the Vitamin C. This formulation can be used alongside acne treatments if desired for added visible skin benefits.
Wow, you woman are so awesome!!! Thank you so much for demystifying all this. I am 56 and only just now wanting to use these serums. After a week of research, I became frustrated at the lack of coherent info. Then I found your channel. ❤️
I suffer from stubborn small white and red bumps all over my cheeks and jaw, which looks like malassezia but my dermatologist thinks is mild acne. Also years of layered brown scarring from this condition which is pretty unsightly when I don’t have time to do skincare properly. As far as I’m concerned it could be both and we’re treating it like that. I’m not a professional but this routine is working for me (I have oily/combination skin that is only dry after washing my face): Morning 1. Gentle cleanser (calming or packed with antioxidants) 2. Gentle, calming toner (rose water, soy, aloe, hyaluronic acid, thermal water) 3. (Optional if your skinny feels ‘dirty’) Exfoliant (magnesium salt, AHAs, BHAs) 4. Antioxidant serum (vitamin C, phloretin, niacinamide, vitamin E, ferulic acid. Choose one, or pairings that work together. Don’t use niacinamide and vitamin C together in the same routine) 5. Gentle moisturiser if your skin still feels dry (no mineral oils, fragrance or anything fancy - you just want to hydrate the skin and lock in all the previous steps. For acne prone skin a gel cream is recommended) 6. SPF!!!!! Night Steps 1-4 the same. I might use an exfoliating toner like glycolic acid, in which case I will skip step 3. If I’m opting to use salicylic acid (BHA) as part of step 3, I’ll make sure 1 and 2 are as gentle as possible. 5. Retinol 0.3%. Quite new to retinoids so I’m using a face cream formula. I don’t use this every night as my skin has its good days. You MUST wear sunscreen in the morning if you use retinol products. 6. I prefer to use a plant based oil for the evening, like rosehip or squalane (prefer the latter as thinner consistency and no strong smell, plus it absorbs better). If my skin is feeling particularly dry or dull I will use a sleeping mask Additional steps: 1. I use a sulphur clay mask every 1-2 weeks, depending on if my skin is ‘angry’. 2. For blackheads, I use an enzyme powder face wash once every week 3. I also use a Korean sheet mask around 3-4 times a week mostly to hydrate dull looking skin or calm irritated skin. When it comes to skincare I think what works best is if you keep each step separate and wait between steps so that products sink in. E.g. I wouldn’t recommend an exfoliating face wash - for me a gentle face wash and exfoliation should be two distinct steps. Aside from skincare, what you eat and do is super important. I would recommend at least 30min of exercise everyday. Drinking plenty of water is the most effective, and I’m saying this as someone who absolutely detests drinking water. Try a detox like celery juice every morning for 2 weeks (surprisingly really nice by itself), or smoothies with antioxidant powder (basically berries). For vitamins, I mostly take the B group, omega 3 and 6. I drink green tea everyday (contains flavonoids) and try as best as I can to eat probiotics (if you like Asian food then organic miso soups and kimchi are great add ons to your meals). Cut out dairy, oily and sugary foods completely. For me it’s impossible to be stress free and sleep 6-8 hours a day as I work in banking, so making sure I do the rest is super crucial. If your genes didn’t bless you with good skin, then sadly it takes hard work. But like body building, once you get into a routine it feels weird to break out of it. I honestly feel adding some discipline to your life makes living slightly more purposeful and fulfilling, esp under the current environment. Hope this was helpful and shout if any questions (we’re all here to help each other at the end of the day).
Kat Wadsager I did some research because I want to incorporate niacinamide into my routine and it looks like it’s not a good idea to combine or layer niacinamide and BHA and/or AHA. It’s because they’re too acidic and can cause redness/flushing/irritation etc. Hope this helps :)
Hey! I watched this video after using a cleanser with niacinamide and then using the ordinary aha+bha. My face turned red :( I don't think I'll be using them both in the future.
I researched and found that you CAN layer the two if you use the BHA first and then niacinamide no less than 30 minutes after. I tried it and it worked with no redness or flushing! I used Paula's Choice 2% BHA first, then Paula's Choice 20% niacinamide 30 minutes later.

Beauty Within LOVED❤️LOVED❤️LOVED❤️THIS VIDEO❣️💯💯💯👌🏽
Such a GREAT video 👍🏽 can u do a part 2 about how to layer for specific skin conditions please 🥺🥺
Omg this is sooo helpful! I’ve been stressing trying to figure out what combines with what and how and when to use them together.
Is this return cream??? Can you tell us more abour that please?
Here are my detailed notes on everything (because I was that bored)
*Getting to know the key active ingredients:*
Vitamin A (Retinoids/Retinols):
- Antioxidants
- Increase cell turnover (smooth out fine lines & wrinkles)
- Even texture
- Kill acne-causing bacteria
- Side effect includes drying => Pair well with moisturizer
- Not necessary until 25 years of age
Vitamin B3 (Niacinamide):
- Produced by our body to transform carbohydrates into energy
- Help all sorts of skin conditions (dullness & pore size)
- Balance sebum production & texture
- Less acidic than Vitamin C (4.5 pH level)
Vitamin C (l-ascorbic acid):
- Brightening effect
- Promote elastin & collagen production in the dermis layer
- Derivatives: tetrahexyldecyl ascorbate, ascorbyl glucoside, magnesium ascorbyl phosphate => Better for sensitive skin
Alpha Hydroxy Acid (AHA):
- Fruit/milk-derived chemical exfoliants that are water-soluble
- Slough off excess dead skin cells
- Unclog pores and even out skin tone (help with black & white heads)
- Common AHAs: glycolic acid (most potent), lactic acid (best for sensitive skin), tartaric acid, mandelic, and citric acid
Beta Hydroxy Acid (BHA):
- Chemical exfoliants that are oil-soluble
- Control sebum production
- Smooth and minimize the look of enlarged pores
*Combining active ingredients:*
Hyaluronic Acid + Vitamin C
=> Extra synergistic boost (brightening & hydrating)
=> Help with dehydrated skin
Azelaic Acid + Vitamin C
=> Azelaic acid calms inflammation, kills acne-causing bacteria & treats post-acne marks
=> Paired with Vitamin C for amplified efficacy
Vitamin A (retinol) + Vitamin B3 (niacinamide)
=> Great combo for sensitive skin
=> Niacinamide helps dilute the potent effects of retinol
=> Help to stimulate ceramide production in the skin (ceramides are lipids that hold our skin together)
Vitamin B3 (niacinamide) + Vitamin C
=> Help smooth wrinkles and even out dull, pigmented skin (post-acne marks & hyperpigmentation)
Vitamin C + Vitamin E + Ferulic Acid
=> Stabilize & boost the efficacy of vitamin C
=> Calm down irritation & nourish skin
=> Create an ironclad shield that protects skin from the environment & UV rays & stimulating collagen
*Layering active ingredients:*
Method 1 - Texture & Consistency
- Watery products include toners and serums
- Creamy products are emollients like moisturizers
- Emollients trap water inside & soften the skin outside
=> Apply products from thinnest (watery) to thickest (creamy)
Method 2 - pH Levels
- pH scale ranges from 0 - 14, from acidic to alkaline
- Too acidic products can cause irritated, red, and inflamed skin
- Very alkaline products can cause dry, flaky, and dehydrated skin
- Ideal pH level for our skin lies between 4.5 - 5.5
- The lower the pH, the better absorption
- Products that are lower in the pH level (pH 2.5-4) : AHA, BHA, Vitamin C => Incorporate first or earlier in the skincare routine
- Products that are higher in the pH level (pH 4.5-7): Retinols, Niacinamide, Hyaluronic Acid, Copper Peptides, facial oils (jojoba oil, rosehip oil, etc) => Skin barrier friendly
=> Apply low pH products before high pH products
*Active ingredients for daytime routine:
*
Vitamin C + Vitamin E + Ferulic Acid (skin protection from UV rays)
AHA (for hyperpigmentation, acne marks, overall skin brightening)
BHA (for active breakouts)
Azelaic Acid
Gluconolactone (PHA - a milder form of AHA)
Cleansing
Vitamin C
AHA or BHA or azelaic acid (toner or serum)
Moisturizer
SPF sunscreen
*Active ingredient for nighttime routine:*
Retinols (helps with cell regeneration)
Retinols shouldn’t be used during the day due to its photosensitivity nature
Method 1:
Cleansing
Retinols
Moisturizer
Method 2: (preferable for beginners to retinols)
Cleansing
Hyaluronic/Niacinamide
Retinols
Moisturizer
Tips:
Pilling: flaky shits that appear on your skin after you apply products
Pilling occurs when your skincare doesn’t absorb into your skin
Give your skin an extra 10-30 seconds to allow the product to absorb
Applying products on damp skin helps better absorption
Personal note: According to dermatologists, ALWAYS apply Retinol on dry, moisturized skin.
Thank you! 💛 I'm going to use these in my skincare notebook. :)

How I wish someone would create an app that we could put all of our products and a routine would lol up. I.E. This is better at night. If you use this at night, then use this in the a.m. Etc. Yes, I'm only dreaming...but wow would that be helpful!!!
That would be genius and helpful
Girl delete this comment and make this app yourself and make that $$$$ lol if I knew how to develop an app which I could prob do if I wasn’t in school or lazy I would! Lol
That would be magical!

Anyone else here learning to use The Ordinary?
Bailey Todtenbier yes
Yeah I looked this up because I used their vitamin c suspension in squalane and it’s pilling!
Yes lol just got lactic acid and niacinamide today!
Me. I ordered vit C, retinol, hyaluronic acid and niacinamide
Dulce Martinez how do you use them together?

*Azelaic acid + Vitamin C*
For discoloration and skin brightening
*Retinol + Niacinamide*
For calming sensitive skin to retinol and increase ceramide production

Glycolic acid plus vitamin c
What about the skin that have all these problem and concerns that requires you to use bunch of ingredients, products combination an all. will it work well because it's confusing to think where to start and what to use?

OMG THANKS
Thankyou! i put on my note 😍 you just make it easier
If you are using the Ordinary niacinamide + zinc, they instructed not to use it together with a vitamin c serum because the zinc in their formulation would react with vit c. Other niacinamide products are fine I guess.
thanks!!!! NEVER would have thought of that. i was doing that every now and then this month lol but won't anymore
I was kinda worried that I have been doing it wrong because I always put the Niacinamide and zinc serum and then the magnesium Ascorbyl phosphate and I thought I gotta throw it out for a sec

omg i so wanna know how AHAs and Niacinamide work together. i wanted to introduce glycolic acid to my routine for little bumps and acne spots but i already use niacinamide in the morning and a BHA at night. im confused as to how to incorporate an AHA like glycol in.
Thanks mam. My dull skin is looking fresh and glowing with the use of rice berry face serum.

-Vit A (fragile while exposed to dun, so night,
- Hylaroic Acid/Vit B3 then Vit A

Side note on the side note: you definitely CAN start retinol before you're 25. It's also good for acne, not just wrinkles
Yes I used Adapalene for acne when I was 19. I didn't know it also helps against wrinkle. I guess she is referring to those who are younger than 25 and doesn't have acne. The side effects outweigh the benefits.
I’m 19 and I recently started using retinol
I'm a straight guy, I don't use make or any such thing. My gf was talking about all this and i wanted understand the chemistry and use some products that have the above listed chemicals.
What a beautifully presented video... Thanks.

We all know about AHAs and BHA but can anyone talk about Amino Acids and their benefits? It can surely be the next big ingredient. .
Anu아누 thats a great topic.. I’ve been looking into it myself
I agree, peptide serums are become more popular and products to help increase your collagen production.
amino acids are essential natural moisturizing factors which the skin produce itself. if you see a word ending in “-ine” on your ingredient list, that’s an amino acid. they are very moisturizing and aid in protecting the skin’s barrier as it’s just giving you more of what your skin already makes and loves :)
Or phas
Anu아누 Can I use an AHA toner and then a Niacinimide+zinc serum ?

Can we have a part 2 where you talk about alpha arbutin, Tranexamic acid, ferulic acid, azelaic acid etc?
you said this two months ago but yes defenitely
Arbutin did nothing for me but tranexamic acid serum has
Hi, guys. This video format is so amazing and informative. Especially when you separated products on the diagram visually by the groups and Ph levels. Make so much more sense now 🥰

I already use retinol and niacinamide I’m scared to venture into vitamin c territory ahh 😦
Azeliac acid (from the ordinary) has been my holy Grail after struggling many years with adult acne and comedonal acne. My skin has never looked better and after failed after failed product I can't believe how this one product has completely changed my skin (and my life!)
is this safe for sensitive skin? thank you
I use Niaciamide and I find it really helps. I am going to try to add the Azeliac Acid!
This is one of the best of layering of skincare ingredients videos I’ve seen. Thanks for breaking it down so well!
What I’ve learned is it should be 1. Cleanser 2. Toner 3. Serum 4. Moisturizer 5. SPF
Thin consistency to thick consistency

So does this mean I can use vitamin c and salicylic in the same routine? I thought vitamin c wasn't supposed to be used with an AHA/BHA?
Thandarrr I’m confused because I thought the same!
Me too
You actually can use them together.
I can always count on you guys when I need information.
Omg this video was EXACTLY what I was looking for. So informative, Thank you!
Can you use bha/aha with niacinamide?? Because I have been wondering about that for awhile.
Don't do that. Use the acids at night and niacinamide in the morning. Mixing them could lower the niacinamide's ph and create niacin which might be very irritating for the skin so don't take the chance by mixing them together.
@@anacg8510 but I have a skin toner with BHA(0,5%) and now, I am thinking that I should start using niacinamide. So it's not safe to do it?
Reda Ieva it is safe it just lowers both products' effectivity. Use the toner at night and the niacinamide in the morning! :)
Ana CG i have a cream that has niacinamide as a higher ingredient in the list, and i bought the paula’s choice 2% liquid exfoliant. can i use them together since niacinamide is just an ingredient in the cream?
Ana CG can you mix retinol with niacinamide?

Yo I just barely realized this channel used to be, “Asian Beauty secrets.” I never connected the two before. I used to watch Mia’s videos religiously. Whatever happened to her? D:
whaaa? i had no idea! i wonder why they decided to rebrand?
I'm kinda of a new subscriber so I was curious about that too while binging their videos. I haven't watched all their videos so I'm not sure if I understand the whole situation but Mia and Felicia did an announcement video a while back introducing the new branding and how it would expand to add new hosts. Mia started showing up less and less and in the comments of another video people were saying she moved back to Australia:(
i believe she got married and moved to australia

This channel is the best! So informative but also so entertaining. If you guys were my teachers in school I would have stayed past class time haha
Niacinamide vit c works well when taken together orally

I suffer from stubborn small white and red bumps all over my cheeks and jaw, which looks like malassezia but my dermatologist thinks is mild acne. Also years of layered brown scarring from this condition which is pretty unsightly when I don’t have time to do skincare properly. As far as I’m concerned it could be both and we’re treating it like that. I’m not a professional but this routine is working for me (I have oily/combination skin that is only dry after washing my face):
Morning
1. Gentle cleanser (calming or packed with antioxidants)
2. Gentle, calming toner (rose water, soy, aloe, hyaluronic acid, thermal water)
3. (Optional if your skinny feels ‘dirty’) Exfoliant (magnesium salt, AHAs, BHAs)
4. Antioxidant serum (vitamin C, phloretin, niacinamide, vitamin E, ferulic acid. Choose one, or pairings that work together. Don’t use niacinamide and vitamin C together in the same routine)
5. Gentle moisturiser if your skin still feels dry (no mineral oils, fragrance or anything fancy - you just want to hydrate the skin and lock in all the previous steps. For acne prone skin a gel cream is recommended)
6. SPF!!!!!
Night
Steps 1-4 the same.
If my skin is feeling particularly dry or dull I will use a sleeping mask
Additional steps:
1. I use a sulphur clay mask every 1-2 weeks, depending on if my skin is ‘angry’.
2. For blackheads, I use an enzyme powder face wash once every week
Amazing video! I'm going to watch again with a notepad.
This didn’t answer my question for if I can layer niacinamide and BHA / AHA ....
Kat Wadsager im having the same question!
Katie bless you for this. 😭💕 honestly trying to decide if waiting 30 mins is worth it lmao. I feel like I’d dry out and feel tight 🥺
