Awesome job brother. That's very true. In every job we receive projects that we don't necessarily like, but we can't reject clients, otherwise they never return. That's just how life works. Also the experience we get from such projects, we don't get them from projects we like, since we stay in our comfort zones and we won't learn new things. Fantastic paint job !
I used to practice the art of bonsai and soon had people asking me to either sell my trees or to style a tree for them...now I'm not going to get into the details of the art but one, I seldom sold any of my personal collection, the trees become so much a piece of you, or like your children...some trees can easily be passed down generations...I sold at least a dozen specimens upwards of 35k...and I sold many $40 trees...ushually I did commission work...clients would tell me thier price range they were looking at, I would charge a set percent that was non refundable...people would change thier minds, any number of things might happen to break the deal...but at the end of the day I would have to be compensated for my time and materials at least. Almost acepted backers to open my own gallery/nursery but in the end I would never compramise my art to make money so I didn't want anything or anyone influencing my decisions. If you are wondering, no I no longer practice having lost my entire collection in a hurricane. Some trees I had been training longer than my children were alive...literally like losing a child almost. Lol I don't know what I meant to convey with my post except that 1, art is subjective and the only "fair" price is the one the buyer is willing to pay. If you are unsure how much you should charge ask the person who is asking you to do the work what THEY feel is a fair price and I strongly recommend you asking for a upfront nonrefundable percentage, like I said earlier that way at least your material is covered. Oh another point, in almost all markets a 15% markup on the material is considered standard practice. Beautiful model and good luck with your future plans to everyone!
Thanks for you message dude. And I am sorry about your nursery. I think that artists need to realise that just because it’s art doesn’t make it any less skill or work than any other job. And if you can’t eat after you’ve worked then you probably charging too little. But mostly I agree. It’s only worth what someone is willing to pay. Hope you get back to bonsai again I used to do that too before I moved to uk and lost my garden. If I had a garden I’d have my trees and I’d have my orchids back in a heartbeat best place to sit and think is in the bonsai nursery around all those trees. They give off a vibe…. Hard to explain unless you’ve been there 🙃
Everything you said was spot on. I love the look of finished models, but often find myself with boxes of models that need to be painted because the job is so tedious. With that being said, it is always satisfying once you get the paint flowing and done,
I think I’m just a really bad boss and I tend to get myself into a bind and put deadlines really tight so I don’t have time to leave them in a box haha but it does mean I just don’t get a sec to rest so probably not the best plan
I just started following you on Instagram! My husband and I just bought our first 3D resin printer in November, I started painting them for fun without prior experience. and next thing we have a ton of commissions that I cram into weekends. I think the hardest part is pricing them cuz we do enjoy working on these
The pricing is the weak spot for everyone. You don’t want to say how much you think you should earn but also you want to make sure you’re not shooting yourself in the foot.
Awesome looking piece! I must agree, working out what to charge for a commision to cover your time & costs is a challenge, especially when just starting out.
I would say start at minimum wages. And negotiate from there (negotiations are with yourself wether you want to raise the price or lower it) but don’t think that just because you’re a beginner your time as a human isn’t worth anything that’s a bullish!t way to look at life!!
Devilishly Amazing. Some great tips as ever. What was the final price, a ball park figure without being too nosey, one thing I often struggle with is price. When I was designing engineering pieces and printing them in carbon fibre, I often felt I was under valuing what I was creating. As I was designing, prototyping improving and supplying a finished piece. Autism means I'm embarrassed to ask for what the project was actually worth and finally charging peanuts for something worth much more.
These are pretty big and I definitely undercut myself but they were around 500 quid each. I had to do two so I thought I’d discount as I could do them together but that but me in the arse lol.
As always another great video! I’ve done commission work years ago on resin kits. I can’t tell you how many Death Dealer and Silent Hill Pyramid Head models I painted for people (without an airbrush). I never charged enough for my work. Also people wanted them fast, I don’t work that way. I’m not sure if I would do it again, but seeing your work is really inspiring!
Yea unfortunately the worst part of any job always comes down to the people doesn’t it? People want cheap and they want fast but we are not machines or factories. At first I was worried about how high my prices were but as I get deeper into this I’m learning my prices are still too cheap. You gotto charge what you’re happy with earning for the time and I agree after the 2nd time duplicating the same model it already starts getting tedious.
Great explanation as always. I’ve done commissions before with my printing and electronics and I never fail to sell myself short lol. Love the model too and thanks for the shoutout (Jay Carbon) 😄
Hey 👋 thank you for the support my dude. Yea it’s a curse of any artist or self employed persons to undersell themselves. But we must stand tall and stand by our prices!
If anyone has experience painting for commission I've got a question I can't quite find the legal answer to. There's 2 versions: 1. Say I buy the STL for a model from a creator who offers a "merchant" tier on their patreon. I don't get the tier just the model. I paint it and display it on a website with a price listing just for that completed piece. I sell it once to whomever. 2. I do the same thing but instead list the photos as reference for my commission painting service. I print from the STL I already purchased, paint and send it to the customer. Do either of these scenarios leave me open to copyright consequences? Are "merchant" subscriptions specifically for selling unpainted prints or do you need them to do commission work?
Awesome painting and great video as always. Are there any good places to go to put yourself up for commissions? Any Facebook groups you would recommend for example? As of yesterday my tattoo studio had to close (landlord sold the building) so I was thinking of putting myself up for a commission so I can keep the kids fed but unsure where to advertise my services
Oooh that’s a really tough one. Facebook groups annoy me for that cos there’s always someone out there willing to undercut you. Best advice I can give is just keep posting ok socials about your commissions being open and keep producing work, when you post make sure you mention that something similar can be commissioned. It’s gonna take a bit of word of mouth but my work mostly came from all my own socials none of the groups. Also be prepared for a lot and I mean a lot of tyre kickers. Everyone wants a custom commission until they find out how much it costs for a custom commission (that should be on a shirt haha)
I prefer to because what someone thinks is a quality print is usually really low quality compared to what I would produce. Usually meaning I have to do so much more prep work to get ready for paint. The difference between a few hours of prep or a couple days.
Haha always love your vids. You did a fantastic jobby on this. Interesting to hear that this type of thing is not really your thing, it being a demony gogga type. Its like that for me also, also just because im a devout Christian. But i mostly dont like this type of stuff anyway😋 but keep the awesome vids coming, bud. Well done

Yup. Very true. You want to grow, then climb out your box and stretch the comfort zone a bit. Thanks for watching my dude!!

Do you have an insta or a website where I could see your work. Always interested in seeing other artist's work.
Great work and great feedback in general. This is something that really translates into any form of commission.
Thanks my dude. Appreciate the feedback from you too!
Wow! That is a killer paint job man, outstanding work!!
Thank you very much!

Incredible paint and awesome speech. I had few comission and applied all your advices
That looks great!! love the way the orange pops
Yea man that is the help from the white. Could do it with layers of orange but that’s gonna take more layers than just one white and one orange.
wOOOW you are crazy friend! Incredible the sizes of the figures and the detail of the painting! congratulations
Thank you very much 🙏
I want to start with painting models and your channel is blessing!
Great stuff dude. Welcome. Hope you find some helpful info!!
Well done masterpiece! I don't think I could ever pull off something like that.
Great explanation as always. I’ve done commissions before with my printing and electronics and I never fail to sell myself short lol. Love the model too and thanks for the shoutout (Jay Carbon) 😄

What’s the black triangle looking brush you were using for the details?
army painter kolinsky brush. i dont use that anymore now, not because i dont like it just because i found a cheaper option, expo tools sable brushes
I wish I have skill like you :( so fantastic
Watch more videos maybe you can pick up the skill?
Interesting stuff Brent. So when you take on commissions do you ALWAYS print the files? Cheers
I prefer to because what someone thinks is a quality print is usually really low quality compared to what I would produce. Usually meaning I have to do so much more prep work to get ready for paint. The difference between a few hours of prep or a couple days.
Cool vid 👍🏼 not my kind of model either but you did an awesome job 😎
Thank you dude. Yea it’s very different from my usual but still worth learning what it taught me though!
What is the name of that character?
I've been asked to take on jobs, but I always feel bad when I say a price because it is pricey
Don’t feel bad you are worth it. No matter what even if you do a terrible job your time is at least worth minimum wages.
Wow *-*
Thanks 🙏
