When I think of a stinger, the ball is 9 ft, maybe 20 ft ball height max.

If Tiger claims him inventing the stinger,?...then he is dishonest! Low ball flight shots were the ORIGINAL GOLF SHOT in and around early days.....home of golf, St,Andrews. Every hack and Jack played it as it was effective in the wind. Im sure Tiger copied it and renamed it. I think its a common punc shot

Honestly, I hit stingers, attempt to, with all clubs in my bag, LW-Driver, as a drill. The absolute only way for me to successfully do it is to clear my hips. So I use it as a hip clearing drill. Similar to driver off the deck (drill for me).
Thanks Clay for walking me through what is actually happening for such a shot. Do you have anything on driver off the deck. I assume it's similar, in that youth must come in shallow, as such, you must clear the hips.
Hi Daryl, thanks for the comment. I typically don't recommedn hitting driver off the deck unless you have a fluffy like the ball is on a tee. The sweet spot is too high on the face and the loft is usually too low on the lower part of the face where you'll be able to strike the ball. This results in a very low launch and high spinning shot which is trough to control. I would recommend just hitting a 3 wood. It will usually go further and be easier to hit. Play well! Thanks for this *correct* explanation. 99% of "stinger" tutorials are actually tutorials for standard punch shots. Tiger's real stinger is a full shot, not cut off or shortened or any of that. The length of the swing is the same as his full shots. I believe the only difference is he (1) delofts the face more through forward shaft lean and (2) Hits the ball slightly lower on the clubhead. The second part I've never actually seen addressed in tutorial videos, but even a lot of forward shaft lean won't produce a shot as low as Tiger's stingers. He must also be hitting it lower on the face. But it takes tremendous talent to do that without topping it, which most of us would struggle with. Just go out to the range and try to hit a few lower on the face. You'll top most of them. Once in a while you might get lucky and you hit this perfect low, piercing shot. Difference is Tiger can execute it every time.
MrElculver2424 watch the backswing and then lag which is directly down and through just like a 1.5 driver
MrElculver2424 wouldn’t say it’s ever a good idea to try to hit the ball anywhere other than the sweet spot. Especially lower on the face when hitting a stinger because hitting the ball lower on the face will create more spin which creates more drag which is a killer for distance on a stinger.
@@aaronmacchia1011 Exactly. Always hit the sweet spot. Ethan is right though that most tutorials are for punch shots. What I liked about this one is that it addressed the hip turn. I was hitting 3i stingers, but in reality they were more of a punch shot because I wasn't turning my hips enough. Next session though I'll be doing as instructed here.
Hell yeah, tried it at the range today. I used to think he hit thin every time. Everything clicked when he dragged the club against the ground and explained the kink in right wrist. I tried the swing with every club in the bag and now I have a knock down swing for every club. Thanks!

Tiger explains stopping his hands quickly after impact. So this isn’t a full swing shot. I think that is a big reason your shot was 71’ off the ground. That true stinger is staying much lower.

Top Speed Golf - Clay Ballard I think you had all the rest spot on. But that full backswing to stopping hands so you finish below shoulders might explain some back and knee problems. Problems you likely/luckily haven’t had to deal with. 🤣
No disrespect but in Tigers video he specifically states that you need to stop your follow through about shoulder height so therefore it wouldn’t be a full swing you’re supposed to cut off the finish slightly. Basing off of how tiger stated it.

Tigers stinger is not 70' high. It's probably half of that. How does HE do it?
Hi, I'm not sure exactly how high Tiger's stinger is but if it is lower than he is just getting more forward shaft lean to launch it lower. He is using the technique that Clay demonstrates here. To get it lower, he is opening his body more and getting those hands more out in front at impact. He is also coming in nice and shallow which gives him more compression on the ball and less spin so that the ball doesn't balloon. Play well ~ Quentin | TSG Instructor

I want to clear up some confusion....when a club manufacture stamps a #2 on a club, it's not really so important what the number is but how much LOFT it has compared to a driver (hence the name "driving iron") Tiger struggled to get his driver off the ground with a right-to-left shot, so he used his 2 iron as a substitute. but his natural swing path was OUT to IN and that is where the "stinger" comes from, since Butch Harmon told him to keep the ball down out of the wind in Scotland.

I think that people are getting confused between the punch, knock down and the stinger which are 3 different shots. I know that I have been. Thanks for clearing up this. Question, Tiger hits a draw with his stinger, is this the shape we should be looking for?
Hi Brian, not necessarily. You can hit a stinger that is a fade, draw or straight. Draws will typically be lower because you it's easier to deloft it when you are hitting a draw. Play well! Quentin | TSG Instructor
If i try doing this, will it hurt my regular swing, because if i practice turning my hips and shoulders more for this shot, it might leak into my full swing, so should I try doing this?
When you watch tiger do it he comes across the ball tjen delofts the club at the last second amd follows tjrough with a full swing and they fly knee high all the way down tje fairway.

Hi April, the iPad is connected to a FlightScope launch monitor. The app on the iPad just displays the data that the launch monitor is gathering. The FlightScope runs about $12k. Just so I get it, you take a 3 iron, de-loft it and hit it pure. So, the same as a nice sweeping 1 iron? Why would you choose one over the other? Genuine question from someone who doesn't see the difference! lol
Hi Toby, I get this question a lot. If you don't have forward shaft lean then you'll be losing speed. Also, if you don't have forward shaft lean then your impact will be unstable. You want the force (hands) leading the mass (club head). Imagine a boat pulling a skier vs the other way around. It doesn't work. Also, if you flip then you'll typically just be able to hit thin shots unless the ball is sitting up like it's on a tee. Play well! Quentin | TSG Instructor

Like Clay Ballard a lot, and I know he's just trying to get views (and teach a valuable shot), but I just get _so_ irritated with this "stinger" thing every time. Like guys weren't hitting hard knockdowns back when Snead and Hogan were playing. Or Jones, or Vardon, or the Morrises, for that matter. There's just something that smacks of the whole "Tiger invented golf" thing in it.
But yeah, the info is good here as usual.

I think the problem is people don’t practice with the clubs they have to learn how to hit them, Iv learned how to hit all my clubs using a impact net then started adding power and wider swings im smoking the ball now dead center and getting the ball up and have mastered the clubs I have, that’s how I learned how to play! Then I decided to watch these youtube videos and learn everything I can but everything y’all are teaching I learned my self but the biggest tip I got that really made me super consistent was from Calvin Peete watching him teach someone and he told the person to bend there knees then grip the club best tip I could of ever learned I think because I keep my knees bent now all the way threw the swing and that allowed me to really smoke the balls speed and allowed me to be more persistent in my shots
The stinger is nothin more than a strong-punch. They are easy to hit, just practice punching the ball. Most people would never pull a 2i (or any iron) and try to punch from a tee box or fairway, that is why everyone is in such awe when they see him do it. The time you hit it in the water was the stinger, but you shank'd it. 70' in the air is a regular swing-height for some people with a 2i. Strong punch = Stinger.

Mr. Sig I hit my strong punch shot like he did when the ball went in the water, but I also close my clubface to correct for the slice. Is this okay? My ball starts low, but rises? The height is about half as high as my regular shot.
@@magicmike1122 It all depends. You can hit a stinger fade, or stinger draw. There are a couple of reasons for a natural slice, and a couple reasons why even if you close the face down to correct for it and the ball still slices. Someone knowledgable would have to watch and evaluate your swing. If your swing is a mirror image of a his when the ball went in the water, then your ball goes right because of a slight shank. He didnt have much of an open stance, and he didnt swing over the top, his weight looked centered and balanced. Closing the face down with a descending blow sometimes traps the ball against the hosel even though the ball still contacts a good portion of the club face to give it an initial straight flight.

Put it towards the back of your stance, stand a bit open get your hands out in front and swing normal
Hi Brandon, thanks for the comment. That's exactly it! You just want to make sure that you don't get it too far back in your stance like Clay mentions in the video. If you do then you'll come down too steep and chop into the ball. You can see how much distance Clay lost doing that. The key is to get more forward shaft lean to lower the ball flight and come in nice and shallow so that you get that really good compression. Play well ~ Quentin | TSG Instructor

Hi Joseph, hope you are doing well. You're exactly right, it probably isn't that high but I'm not for sure. I haven't even seen the launch numbers on one but I would imagine it's around 50 feet. It was definitely not our intention to mislead anyone. The technique that Clay went over in this video is correct but Clay may not have executed the shot the way he wanted to.
