How To: DT Swiss 370 54T Ratchet LN Upgrade -- Install Video -- Specialized Roval Traverse Wheels

  • How to install a new set of 54 tooth ratchet rings on your DT Swiss 370 LN hubs. This set is on my 2022 Specialized Stumpjumper Evo, and is a fantastic, easy to install wheel upgrade.
    This will not work on your 3 pawl 370 hubs, you will need a different drive ring and parts kit.

    This video was a godsend. I found it after my first spin on the exact same bike. Same boat - TOTALLY love the bike but was disappointed by the hub. Bought the DT Swiss upgrade kit. It arrived today, and so I'll get the new rings installed this weekend. But I'm just totally flabbergasted that what looks like about $3 worth of raw materials costs in excess of $100. WHAT THE ACTUAL F*UCK?!?!? Crazy...

    Have this same bike and after watching this video decided to make sure my 2022 EVO Stumpjumper did in fact have the same ratchet system. And as usually happens when I try to do something after watching a TH-cam video I encountered weirdness. Pulled the cassette off with my hands, checked and yep, Star Ratchet system, made sure the springs were oriented correctly, put the cassette back on, put the wheel on the bike, turned the pedals and found I had turned my bike into a fixie. What the heck???? Dismounted the wheel and removed/replaced the cassette several times and still had the fixie problem. Took the wheel to the LBS where a mechanic well versed in DT Swiss hubs found that the axle seal had dropped into the hub body where I couldn't see it (it's small, black and looks like a sag ring on a fork) and without the seal in the correct place, too much force was being transferred to the hub when I tightened the axle not allowing the ratchet to disengage. Watching numerous installation videos for this system I have never seen the axle seal mentioned so I thought I would post about my experience in case someone else encounters this.

      @@michalkamensky1622 the Canyon Spectral 2022 comes with the exact hub from the video. It‘s a DT Swiss 370 ratchet LN with the standard 18t.

    I have the DTSwiss M1900 wheels, I'm guessing are 370hubs, with the 3paws. This can be upgraded to the ratchet rings but the 3paw hub body needs to be replaced to the LN ratchet hub body

    • @achn2b
      @achn2b ปีที่แล้ว

      Plus, you need $150 worth of DT Swiss tools to remove the old hub pawl ringdrive and install the ratchet ringdrive. Plus the upgrade kit, whatever that costs. Worth spending the extra money to buy a ratchet based wheelset in the first place, end up costing you about the same.

    • @DaBinChe
      @DaBinChe ปีที่แล้ว

      @@achn2b True but if the wheels/hubs comes with the bike than the cheapest thing to do is upgrade the internals. But yes the upgrade kit is about $100 and the tools is also about $100 but there is a work around for that...a 1" hex head can be used so I just used a parktool that has a 1" hex on it to fit into the hub paw ring drive. Use a heat gun or blowdryer to heat up the hub body first, it really makes a difference in getting the hub paw ring drive off.

    I am confused about the "3-pawl" vs "ratchet" DT Swiss hubs. I thought the 370 was a 3-pawl hub and 240 and 350 are ratcheting. Did the 370 change in 2022 to also be ratcheting now?
    I am looking at some DT Swiss "P1800 Spline" road wheels with 370 hubs. Do I need to ask the retailer "which" version of 370 that it has? I doubt they would know. They also have "PR1600 Spline" wheels with 350 hubs for about $100 more. Now I'm not sure what the difference is.

    • @kylehasfun3114
      @kylehasfun3114  ปีที่แล้ว

      350 will always be a nicer hub than 370. SOME 370 hubs form 2022 are ratchet mechanism, I believe they are all labeled as 370 LN hubs, if they are not denoted at 370 Ratchet LN or 370 LN, you should probably assume they are 3 pawl.

    • @larrymelman
      @larrymelman ปีที่แล้ว

      @@kylehasfun3114 I wrote to DT Swiss, they said yes the 370 was changed in 2022 to the new "Ratchet LN" design. Unfortunately you have to pull the cassette to see the labeling which is on the freehub body. Also, since making that change, so far (as of 2/1/2023) they have only used the new 370 in mountain bike wheels. (Not at all in road wheels which is what I was asking about.) If an old 370 was upgraded using the official kit, that will also say "Ratchet LN". Pictures on their web site.

    Fantastic vid..! I bought the same bike and a few things I hate about the bike and the looosy goosy play in the pedals was driving me nutts. I just switched out the brakes for XTR, as I wasn't happy with SCRAM progressive feel. I need to either change the dropper seat post or tweak it as its terrible to activate...

    The 54t is not a great upgrade for MTB riding in my experience. It tends to slip under hard load. That's just my experience.

      was wondering about this ... the 54t seems a little "less" mass, less height for each tooth ... and like you sad, possibly slip under load ???

      @@JohnPhan1 and would wear quicker causing it to definitely slip under load

      @@JohnPhan1 found this on dt swiss's website " Strength of ratchet is highest with lower tooth count. For E-bikes do not exceed 24T"
      so we have the right mindset, it's all for the angle of engagement and noise, not for reliability

      What about I9 hubs then that have way more than 54t?

      @@HD-on2eg no comparison really. They are a completely different system. DT is ratchet and i9 is pawls

    Nice video. Where did you get the kit from?

    I always wonder why they just don’t do this from the factory and sell a better hub right out of the gates. Just charge the extra money, nobody wants less engagement!
