Hey Tony! That is one special bottle! I thought about doing a review video on it, but had second thoughts and now just saving it for a special occasion 😆. There are so many other channels that did a review so I don't think mine is needed 🤣. Hopefully the bottle will be worth the wait for both of us!

Cheap Mixer: Kirkland Small Batch or whatever I have on hand, like Bulleit Bourbon & Rye.
Go To Pour: Woodford Double Oaked
    Friday Night: Hibiki
    Impress: High West MWND
Special Occasion: I don't have anything crazy at the moment. Likely a Redbreast 27.
Love the videos as always, David!

Great picks. Loved the out of the box additions! My mixer is Rittenhouse for pretty much everything except I gotta use Makers 101 for the Old Fashioned. Go to pour has been 1792 full proof lately. Friday pour is usually ECBP, out of the box is Evan Williams 12 Year. Impress my guest would JD 12 or maybe Old Overholt Rye 10 year. Special occasion is Little Book 7, out of the box would be the Harden’s Creek Trio sampler pack but they are only about 7 ounces each!

Hey Scott! That is a great list!! I love the Evan Williams 12 pick for the Friday night pour and the Hardin's Creek Trio sampler pack for the special occasion! I haven't had the Even Williams 12 year old yet but I heard it's different than the Wild Turkey 12. The Hardin's Creek Trio pack is a great pick as you get to try three different 17 year old bourbons in one sitting, which is always exciting!! 😁.

I was wondering if you take each state (you could bypass Kentucky and Tennessee) and talk about that particular state’s distilleries.
You know, where they are located and what is the one or two things they are doing that makes them unique.
This type of topic could keep you busy for content for a considerable amount of time. And when you think you’re about done you’ll hear about another and another. Boy, you would be quite the expert by the time you got even halfway through.
      Or some variation on that.
      Just spit balling.

Great list. Knob Creek 9 has become my daily drinker. My next three are Four Roses Single Barrel, Old Forester Statesman, and 1792 Aged Twelve. My special occasion bottle is Calumet Farms 15 Year. But also, every list should have a balanced mixer so I'm adding a 6th bottle. My local favorite is Bonneville Bourbon from Salt Flats Distillery. For more widely distributed mixer I typically use Michter's Bourbon.

The Lost Monarch is a good choice. Love the out of box choices but except for the Lost Monarch you are paying secondary (in Maryland) Love OC (I have 2 bourbons and a rye) but I would go with the Russell’s 13 or an Old Rip.

    • @WhiskeyBank

Hey Michael! Lost Monarch would have made my "standard" list if it was more available everywhere. It is a California distillery so I'm lucky that I can get it everywhere.
I was debating on making the special occasion bottle Old Carter, RR13, or JD12, but decided on the Old Carter as it is more available than the others and with so many batches and types (American, Kentucky, Rye, etc.), it could fit more palates. But RR13 would not be wrong for a special occasion! 😆.

As I've watched more content and gotten other people's opinions and try or buy more bourbon, my 'you only need 5 bourbon' has altered somewhat. Firstly I saw a video from Wisconsin Bourbon Bros the other day, where they only list 4 bottles: Mixer Bourbon, Daily Sipper, Friday Special and Rare Occasion. This eliminates the "impress/show off" bottle. Which as I thought about it, isn't a bad thing and probably conducive to mental health. Especially in today's bourbon market. I opted to add the fifth slot back as "wildcards", which will be your revolving lazy susan of bourbons that you inevitably will acquire and try as you explore more bourbons. The wildcards will more than likely be one-off bottles for the most part because these will be bottles you buy that you don't have the ability to try first. Also I started referring to the 'daily sipper' or 'everyday pour' as my "go-to pour" or "favorite pour". Another person commented on this already and I chimed in, but I just thought I would repeat it here again.
    Currently, my 5 Bourbon list:
    1. Favorite Pour - Eagle Rare 10 Year (still only have my one bottle of this ☹)
    2. Mixer - Wild Turkey 101 (considering old grand-dad bonded now that I've found where to buy it locally)
    3. Friday Night - Knob Creek 12 Year (this is awesome stuff but unfortunately intermittent supply in my area, could substitute with Knob Creek 9 Year Single Barrel Reserve)
    4. Rare Occasion - currently don't have one for this slot but it would be something like Stagg Barrel Proof or Blanton's Straight From The Barrel, something allocated that would be special for me.
    5. Wildcards - currently sitting on Kentucky Owl Confiscated, Maker's Mark Cask Strength, Russell's Reserve 10 Year, Sazerac Rye and Heaven Hill Bonded 7 Year.
    >Regarding the wildcards, this is where I would place any single barrel store picks. Also found Calumet 15 and 16 in my area at or just below retail but I'm undecided on it.
The main problem with bourbon is the same problem that plagues a lot of other things these days, the market is flooded with options/choice but the ones you ultimately want are ones everybody else wants too 😂.

    • @WhiskeyBank
      @WhiskeyBank  10 หลายเดือนก่อน

Hey Meta! You are absolutely correct! There is a limited supply of the bottles we all want and the demand is just too high to either keep them on the shelf at a reasonable price. But there are great bottles on the shelf, as you mentioned, Knob Creek 12 (or 9 year single barrels) and the Wild Turkey 101s.
The Wildcard is a great idea and is something I'll bring to the table on my next video for these types of lists; it's a fun idea 😆.
For me personally, I do love the hunt and I do put in a lot of effort to find these bottles, but I'm still searching for my first Blanton's Straight from the Barrel 😥.
Thank you so much for your thoughtful and insightful comment and let's hope in 2024, allocated bottles become available bottles!!

For sure! My current KC 12 has 'aired out' enough that it basically smells/tastes like a plateful of pancakes drenched in rich maple syrup! Thankfully I have a backup bottle too! @@WhiskeyBank

No pt in doing most of these since they are allocated.

It is the unfortunate reality that many bottles that would "impress your guest" or for a "special occasion" are allocated as either they are in high demand or are limited releases. Obviously the "out of box" picks were there so I could add some allocated bottles as I didn't want another list with just Wild Turkey Rare Breed, Jack Danie's Barrel Proofs, Smoke Wagon Uncut & Unfiltered, etc. It is a delicate balance I have to walk on as the "allocated" bottles are some of the best out there (and the reason they are allocated), but not to go overboard since many people can't find them. I wish we could all just go out to the store tonight and find every bottle we want 😆.

I like the WT 101 and ET BIB much better than the OF .

Hey Frank! WT 101 and ET BIB are great bottles but the reason I picked the OF 100's was due to having both the bourbon and the rye. For me, Ryes make some great cocktails as mixers (juice, syrup, etc.) are mostly sweet and the spice in the rye really balance it out. And when I compared the WT 101 bourbon and rye vs Old Forester 100's, the OF won by a slight margin. Maybe I'll have to visit that matchup 😆. But both are fantastic bottles!!

Saw a Buckner's 10 Year SB. Haven't seen one before, so I pounced on it for $153. Anybody have a pour of it? Seems like it could fall under the impress your guests category, if it's good

Hey Damon! I heard that it's a fantastic bottle but unfortunately, I haven't had a chance to get a bottle. Once you do have a pour, let me know if it's worth the money! 😄

Hey Odeh! That is a fantastic list and one I'm jealous of as it would be awesome to have a GTS for a special occasion 😆. I haven't tried the use the Bardstown BiB in a mixer as I love it neat but will have to give it a shot! What drink is the best to make with the Bardstown BiB?

Hey Kit! As I mentioned in the video, there are times where an expensive item doesn't make sense, but it's something we do to celebrate good times (expensive meal, watch, ring, handbag, jacket, suit, dress, etc.). And to me, whiskey or bourbon is an item where I would like to spend for a nice bottle for a special occasion. Some people get a nice suit, go out for a nice meal, or to go a nice vacation resort (or all three 😆). I am not advocating for people to spend a lot of money on whiskey for everyday drinking as there are great bottles at good prices, but for a special event... why not? (if it's within your budget).
What is your special occasion spend? Just wondering as everybody is different and has values on different things 😄. Mine is gifts for wife. I have spent.... way too much money getting nice gifts for my wife that doesn't make sense 🤣.
Thank you so much for your view and comment! Greatly appreciate it and cheers~
