Watched this video when it was released and two days later planned the trip. Completed this loop with my wife last week. We did it in 8 days.... stupid beautiful.
I’m a local of Boise and I’ve been up in the sawtooths a bit and have tons of friends that have as well. Nobody I know has ever seen a bear in the Sawtooths. The forest service says there are black bears but again; I’ve never heard of anyone seeing any. None of us locals use a bear canister or do any beer hangs. I don’t even bring bear mace. It all seems unnecessary especially since there are no grizzlies.
@@mattmiller6246 No offense but this is bad advice. I did this loop last year and ran into two black bears within 20 minutes of each other. One of which was literally 6ft away from me when I rounded a blind corner. Not hanging your food is irresponsible. Statistically more people are killed every year by black bears than by grizzlies.
I absolutely love your pattern for film making: ambient silent hike then a breakdown at the end. I’m from Idaho living in another part of the country for over 20 years now. I miss the Sawtooth’s so much. Thanks for this one!!!
Eric Normark, Bruno Pisani. Eric is in Sweden in the forest near the ocean ,not so much in big mountains with views. He goes out all four seasons with very little talking and the sounds of nature. Bruno is in the Italian Dolomites. Very into filming in high up spots with great views with the sun and stars.
Videos like this are just what the world needs to see. At a time when there is so much ugly going on this type of video lets you see that there is still rare beauty to find and see. Thank you for sharing your journey with us.
The greatest thing about this is the amount of work this guy put in. Not only did he hike 70 miles, he also had to carry some kind of camera equipment with him. That could potentially be a lot of extra weight. Everytime he sets up a camera he has to go back and get it. This is crazy.
This is wild. I was there just yesterday! Native Idahoan backpacking for the first time. Went to Alpine and Sawtooth lakes. Beautiful place, thanks for this!
Kraig, owner of a digital media company for 30 years. This is some of the finest capture and editing I’ve seen. Keep the same format in your videos, it just works. Hike with background music and overlay the sounds of the hike itself. Last part of the video you explain the technical stuff. Some damn fine editing to boot. Keep things the same for all your videos and you will hit 1 million subscribers. You are doing something unique here and the talent is evident. Keep up the good work Kraig.
I grew up in Jackson, WY, just over the border from Idaho. Such a gorgeous place. I hiked all the time as a kid, I'm so glad I picked it back up now. Daily hikes have changed my life!
I will say- Kraig, that this video is very giving than your other hiking videos. You are inviting people who watch to have a similar experience or want the same experience and providing clear and explanatory information to give us the power to do so. All-in-all, I like this format and encourage you to keep going =)
The "ripples" shot is my favorite shot so far (13 minutes in). Reminds me of that quote by Mother Teresa "“I alone cannot change the world, but I can cast a stone across the waters to create many ripples.” With 436k subscribers, you better believe you have influence. I love seeing creation through your lens, it brings a calm to me in the middle of the chaos. Thanks Kraig.
I don’t know whether it’s Kraig’s film style or him as a person or the awesome places his hikes take us to - or all the above... but I hope he’s flattered that I too am trying to record my adventures (In Kansas, no less) using a similar technique on TH-cam. Kraig’s style - and let’s be real - this is all thx to him - takes us back to a time where it was more important to listen and be present, appreciate the splendor of a visual, the serene environment and how it sounds - than a droning monologist giving you all the info in rapid fire segments. Kraig’s stuff just hits the right tone and is a constant reminder that simplicity is often the right answer. Bravo man! Seriously!
30fps gives it more of a TV Nature Doc feel, but I think it works. It gave the wind blowing through the grass and flowers a dreamy feel. Love the longer updates at the end, let us know how the nomad setup ends up going this time around.
I don't think I'd ever be able to finish the trail. I'd just plop down in awe of one of those vistas and realize five hours had passed and I hadn't moved an inch. Beautifully done! A spectacular way to remind everyone that there is still natural beauty in the world and it is worth preserving.

The shots in this video are literally insane. Beautiful trail, for sure feeling inspired to conquer it myself and adding it to my list of trails to hike and adventure on. Thank you for the video brother.

(obviously the talking that did happen....was also excellence. I've been on the Sawtooths for trail work, and its great to hear its pretty well maintained still. Also, just in case it helps anyone, Idaho trails routinely undercalculates its trail mileage, which I think is great....because it burns out the weak people and the trails are nicer as a result)
Hey, I tried out your Sawtooth loop trail with my 3 kids! I was about to take them to the Wind Rivers, but when we saw your beautiful video, we changed our plans last minute since I hadn’t done the Sawtooths yet. It was amazing! Thanks for the inspiration and keep doing what you do.
Other hiking videos show us a pretty place. Kraig’s videos tell us a story about a man living a free life of adventure while interacting with the beautiful place.
Yes! Kraig's films are 'deep', but as far from pretentious, vanity or egotistical as you can get. He somehow 'connects' us to the total experience, rather than just broadcast 'look what I did'.
he is rushing through trails because he needs content. Rushing through trails is counterintuitive to the entire idea of being out there. I don't mean to be a dick but how is 20+ miles a day realistic? He says himself that he did it too fast. I just think he should relax more and take his time.
this video started a new chapter in our lives in regards to travel and nature.. during covid this particular video inspired me so much. thank you Kraig!
Just like to point out that this guy had to set up his camera, film himself walking to/away, pick his camera back up and repeat. That’s dedication. Beautiful work!
I knew something was different about this one, I thought Kraig must be experimenting with a new frame rate...and then you confirmed it in the BTS. Just my opinion, but I prefer the look of your older videos (specifically the drone footage and 24 fps full frame), but love that you experiment and are always trying new things. Much respect as always!
I plan to be there in September, as of now is there any restrictions for outsiders, visiting Idaho, ? Been researching about quarantine and all that stuffs before I get the flights!! Any tips and advice please do share, thanks a lot
@@5thlakeadventures Yo! To the best of my knowledge, there is no restrictions for non-Idahoans coming to visit. However, Boise/Ada County and a couple other places have legal mandate for wearing masks outside and inside. Stanley, Idaho, where the Sawtooths are located does not have a mandate right now. A few backpackers and hikers were wearing masks just while passing people on the trail. You should be alright.
Luke Kempers awesome, Thank you very much. I also called the city office and asked, but that Lady said stage 3 right now and that is 14 days quarantine for outsiders. I got to think about it, atleast 6-8 hrs total to get there by flight so I want to be sure. Thank you once again my friend. Namaste 🙏
Inspired at 50, doing this hike with my son and daughter next summer. And your music is so refreshing, I live that you don’t use the typical techno electronic crap. Thanks buddy!
Congrats on getting out of NYC and living nomadically for a while! I'm looking to get out of the city and do the same. And, as always, the film is masterful!
This video looks like to me was done NOT by a solo traveler but with some 10 crews. This is the most beautiful hiking video i have ever seen, ever. Sooooo beautiful and the 🎶 is like im watching from the 🌌.

Why not just look at his supplied link to his 'Alltrails map? It shows 61 miles for the route. Camera work and some brief off trail jaunts after setting up camp in order to seek alternate views can easily add another 9 miles. www.alltrails.com/explore/map...
I'm only a couple minutes in and I couldn't ignore the thought of the amount of time it had to take to have the tripod set up, record multiple takes and angles of the same dramatic walking away scene. I had to make sure I wasn't the only one who noticed this so I had to check the comments!
Kraig ☺️ you can come to us in switzerland everytime. Just text us here or on our channel. We can hike together do some videos and hang out. ☺️ 🇨🇭 best wishes from us. Roman and Nadine

Bears yes, they want nothing to do with you. Cougars yes, they would rather remain away from a human sized opponent. Wolves not so much in this area but they are more common elsewehere in Idaho, but it's extremely rare to see them or cougars unless you are experienced and looking for them.
@wayouttatune2 Unless you're in grizzly country there's really not much to worry about aside from moose. They are the real dangerous ones. But again they are generally uninterested in human contact. Hike with a bell on your pack Manu V. Be loud if you are alone.
@wayouttatune2 They are moving back into northern Idaho but there are none in the Sawtooths or surrounding regions, closest grizzly to this video would be in Yellowstone.
@@nickmcgarvey6463 Hiking from grandjean up to Ardeth Lake we ran into a Bear and then a Cougar and then another Bear ! It was an amazing day the 2nd bear look like a grizzly standing up on 2 legs ...blonde head hair ! He eventually moved up the mountain. I did report it to the fishing game though. I have heard of other sightings of possible grizzlies in the Atlanta area .
The amount of creativity and artistry to make a video with zero speaking is amazing. It takes a humble and secure person to do this. Also, the videos are beautiful.
I get where you're coming from, but when it comes to hiking or outdoors adventures I associate the term 'solo' with 'challenge' or a 'first', breaking a record or something considered risky or extreme, which have their place. But the term 'alone' in this context seems apt. It has a kind of 'Yearning, searching for something, a need to reconnect with something other, to find completeness, wholeness' ring to it, and nature provides.
I am going to add my voice to the 24 fps crowd. For some odd reason, 30 fps just makes it seem to much like I am watching sports. P.S. - I hope you got her number!
@@sky_rokit That doesn't make sense lol. If he walks back and forth, he is adding value to his distance traveled. AllTrails does not account for walking back and forth to your camera lol.
@@nowayjose20 at around 27:35 he explains that he had to walk back to film 15 minutes of footage, but he was hiking all day long for 3 days, so it shouldn't have added too much distance. at 18:15 he attributes most of the added distance to all the switch backs that AllTrails doesn't account for.
Absolutely love your videos. In younger days I hiked and backpacked. Now that I have aged I still camp and hike but your videos take me once again out beyond what I can do now and take me to places I can no longer go. They also stir memories of places I have been in years past. Photos are awesome, music is perfect and I can watch without mosquitoes ;-)
I feel like the non-narrative style of this was a win. I have hiked this loop and portions of it several times and to see it from your lense is awesome and great drone footage. Thanks for sharing...
Hey bro! Keep up the good content! You and your vlogging skills are very inspirational! The amount of subscribers you have is phenomenal for a hiking channel. So proud of how large you grew your channel! Any advice on how to build a hiking channel? I been working really hard on mine and I hope one day that my channel can grow to just 1000 subscribers!
Well a lot of his subscribers came from knowing him from wedding film school back in the day.. heck I became one and learnt everything from him! I stopped to and I know why he did! Need to find my peace now to!
Hey mate, If you have been watching him from his "vlogging" days, then you would know, that he didn't purposefully made this a 'hiking' related channel although he enjoys it very much. His earlier videos were vlogs around NewYork, travel films(Japan), road trips (Alaska), some on minimalism & digital minimalism, gear reviews, life updates, personal finance, hiking films with his brother Curtis and also occasional solo hikes (Sweden, Adirondacks). He was experimenting with various different formats of content while trying to keeping a cohesive story of his life. Around 1 year ago his, Hornstrandir (solo hiking) video went kinda viral with 3.6m views today. From then on he pursued solo hiking related films rigorously and we all kept supporting his endeavour. Even before his personal channel, he successfully ran a Filmmaking Channel called Wedding Film School. I didn't know him back then or from WFS. But if you put everything into a perspective, then you know he came a long way to be here today at 437k subs. Jesus, he is probably 29 or turning 30. Listen to his podcast if you wanna know even more about him and his thought processes. Today people might subscribe him for his hiking films, but his relatively older audience care about him. They will watch almost anything he shares because there is his character in every format of videos he makes. I hope this was helpful. Cheers. :)

I love the silence and calm music in your videos
Hey, I tried out your Sawtooth loop trail with my 3 kids! I was about to take them to the Wind Rivers, but when we saw your beautiful video, we changed our plans last minute since I hadn’t done the Sawtooths yet. It was amazing! Thanks for the inspiration and keep doing what you do.
There is so much to see in America the beautiful. I hope it always stays free!
Kraig seems like a really nice person
@davidl0917 really? :( maybe Im looking at the wrong IG page
this is one of the best way of stress reliever. be one with nature and enjoy every moment without gadgets and internet.
I love all your hiking videos. There are so peaceful and beautiful. They help me relax and focus
This man produces brilliant content. Cheers.
It’s amazing! He doesn’t have a cameraman...and he have to go and return for take some good pictures !!!
Good job 👍 Greeting from Russia
Yeah, I truly admire that too! It makes the video itself WAY more satisfying to make and to feel about.
Other hiking videos show us a pretty place. Kraig’s videos tell us a story about a man living a free life of adventure while interacting with the beautiful place.
Brandon Davis well said
👍🎂
Owen Meany well yea. Or else he wouldn’t upload on YT. And he’s doing it for free so what’s the problem?
I really enjoy your silent trips. I’m older and not able to do what you’re doing so I enjoy the outdoors through your eyes. Thank you.
this video started a new chapter in our lives in regards to travel and nature.. during covid this particular video inspired me so much. thank you Kraig!
Супер контент! Спасибо Kraig Adams!
Крейг.
"Your Face looks like you" 😂😁so wholesome 👌🏻
The videography and editing are so beautiful! Never get tired of these, it's so calming and a perfect escape.
These videos are good for my soul right now
Just like to point out that this guy had to set up his camera, film himself walking to/away, pick his camera back up and repeat.
Agreed. 23.98 is always where you want to be.
yeh, me too the clips taken with the A7 on his hikes were something special but can understand going smaller/lighter
Agree with this assessment! Still 24fps for me, but good on him for trying out 30
Just finished this exact loop starting and finishing at Iron Creek, also solo. It's truly an incredible trip.
Luke Kempers awesome,
Thank you very much. I also called the city office and asked, but that Lady said stage 3 right now and that is 14 days quarantine for outsiders. I got to think about it, atleast 6-8 hrs total to get there by flight so I want to be sure. Thank you once again my friend. Namaste 🙏
@@5thlakeadventures oh true, i forgot about that 14-day self-quarantine. Take care
Luke Kempers 👍
I'm guessing the 59 thumbs down are from native Idahoan's like myself just trying to keep this to ourselves. Beautiful work!
Inspired at 50, doing this hike with my son and daughter next summer. And your music is so refreshing, I live that you don’t use the typical techno electronic crap. Thanks buddy!
It is my dream to walk these trails. This is a stunning video, thank you.
Congrats on getting out of NYC and living nomadically for a while! I'm looking to get out of the city and do the same. And, as always, the film is masterful!
23:43 I think he also likes watching "Pirates of the Caribbean" film series
I found that nature was still alive.
This video looks like to me was done NOT by a solo traveler but with some 10 crews. This is the most beautiful hiking video i have ever seen, ever. Sooooo beautiful and the 🎶 is like im watching from the 🌌.
I'm from the UK.... Ur so blessed to have that beautiful scenery around u! We all are no matter where we live there are beautiful places....... It's just called Mother Earth!💓 Great photography, & poise from u kraig, u r a natural person just being u & I think ur great & ur brothers alright too 😉
-Actual hike: 35 miles
-Walking back to retrieve camera after each shot: 35 miles
Stop it 😂😂😂😆😆😆
Why not just look at his supplied link to his 'Alltrails map? It shows 61 miles for the route. Camera work and some brief off trail jaunts after setting up camp in order to seek alternate views can easily add another 9 miles.
www.alltrails.com/explore/map...
I'm only a couple minutes in and I couldn't ignore the thought of the amount of time it had to take to have the tripod set up, record multiple takes and angles of the same dramatic walking away scene. I had to make sure I wasn't the only one who noticed this so I had to check the comments!
Самый годный контент в плане хайкинга. Соглашусь с тем, что не надо вставлять голос в сам маршрут. Удачи и новых маршрутов!
Kraig ☺️ you can come to us in switzerland everytime. Just text us here or on our channel. We can hike together do some videos and hang out. ☺️ 🇨🇭 best wishes from us.
Roman and Nadine
Yess! Amazing video as always Kraig. I'm a huge fan of yours and have been watching your videos for many months. I finally got motivated to make my own hiking video inspired by you. Would mean a lot if everyone could check it out and Subscribe to me small channel :) Thanks!

Watching your video is so relaxing
Someone once said, "quiet is beautiful, silence is a gift", and I feel it on your video
Incredible scenery, music selection and filming. Award worthy
It's only 70 miles because of how many times you have to walk back for the camera Kraig :D
Tim Ezard 😂. That is true.
140, lmaooo
Aren't there bears or cougar's or wolves around!? I would love to hike around such beautiful places, but don't want to become a happy meal either..
Ain't no coronavirus coming near you
The amount of creativity and artistry to make a video with zero speaking is amazing. It takes a humble and secure person to do this. Also, the videos are beautiful.
It's 410am witth coffee getting ready for another day with a calming video bless up
How about hiking “solo” rather than “alone?”
Doesn't have the same serene ring.
Solo and camping? Sounds like a warzone strategy.
I am going to add my voice to the 24 fps crowd. For some odd reason, 30 fps just makes it seem to much like I am watching sports.
P.S. - I hope you got her number!
The walking back to your camera is probably the extra miles that you recorded, compared to what AllTrails said.
He's talked about that in his podcast - the distances he goes are so massive that the walks back to get his camera don't amount to much in the end.
@@jeffreymcneary3055 I watched the video too, thank you.
Brian_Hikes_All_Day agree
Well a lot of his subscribers came from knowing him from wedding film school back in the day.. heck I became one and learnt everything from him! I stopped to and I know why he did!
Need to find my peace now to!
Hey mate,
If you have been watching him from his "vlogging" days, then you would know, that he didn't purposefully made this a 'hiking' related channel although he enjoys it very much.
Cheers. :)
Keshav Dulal man he is lucky to have a viewer like you.
Nice, but I'm pretty sure you know that drones aren't allowed in wilderness areas.
Ну привет,ну привет на на на
The gem of all states. Great work..
I think this video was your best yet. Mostly footage, and a tiny bit of the camping. Loved the breakdown at the end too.
