2023 Lone Pine Fly In with my Aerotrek A220 Taildragger
Took my little baby bush plane A220 to the Lone Pine fly in for a couple days of epic flying, camping, and good times. I’m really impressed with the performance of this little plane! Of course, she has 100 horsepower and with me, my camping gear, and fuel, she’s still under about 1100 pounds.

My first attempt at 360 video. I generally suck at video editing, and this one is no exception! Insta 360 X2 camera mounted on the selfie stick, zip tied to my wing strut. The good news is that it was a real pretty evening, and some footage was nice.

    Confirmed in the positive via my TopScan Device which is a bi-directional scan tool My 2006 RT is finally free of all warnings or codes or unwanted warning lights. Did fill the tank with 93 before hand as suggested and added some VP Maddative to up the octane to 100 factory owners guide suggests 98 octane. I do keep it to a minimum of 97 as occasionally I run out of the VP Maddative. Stuff works.

    Hiya, Curt! I am very interested in the Aerotrek, or Eurofox as it is called over here on the old side of the Atlantic. I was wondering what kind of landing and takeoff distances you think it is capable of? There are many LSAs out there that sure can take off and land shorter, but the overall package and value seems unbeatable.

      Hi, I’m not this good yet, but the manual says about 350 feet is what you need for takeoff and landing at sea level. At this stage of my flying, I need about 600 to be comfortable. It’s a great little plane! Hope you get yours soon!

    Curt, nice work creating a concise, fun to watch video with scenery and a sampling of the A220's capabilities. I took delivery of mine last year and it has far exceeded my expectations - flying all over the PNW from sea level to over 10,000' on hot summer days. The build quality is superb, operating cost very reasonable, and plenty of power for all around back country/ off airport fun. Safe flying!

      I’ve only flown a Rans S-7, but have seen several Rans up-close at OSH and at fly-ins. I also did a lot of research on the S21. I owned a 2013 Aerotrek A220 for 2 years and have owned a 2021 A220 since new. I have flown about 300 hours in them. The fit and finish on an Aerotrek is much nicer than a Rans. Of the 10 planes I’ve owned, including Maule, Supercub, SuperSTOL, Bonanza, and four different models of the Van’s RV, the Aerotrek is my favorite for just going out and poking holes in the sky. The customer service from Rob Rollison in Indiana is beyond anything you could ask for.

    Well Curt, first I have to thank you for sharing this method! I will begin by saying I am an amateur mechanic but will venture down unknown roads when I feel like I have no alternative. The alternative in this case was a $700 invoice plus transportation costs in today's high fuel cost environment for my 2005 BMW R1200RT. So, I took apart the plastics per your video (worked as described) and began making my Zap tool from some grill repair parts from Home Depot. Once I had my homemade zapper built, I was ready to go. I put the bike on the center stand, and hooked up the 2 leads to the 2 outside posts of the fuel display connector. I zapped those 2 outside posts 12 times, then I moved the leads to the inside 2 pins and repeated the zap process 12 times to those leads. I then removed my home made zap tool, reconnected the 4 pin harness and fired up the bike before reassembling. After about 85 seconds, low and behold my fuel guage came back and showed the fuel level in the tank correctly and the yellow triangle error condition was gone!!! Needless to say I was ecstatic to say the least!!! I am pleased beyond words and can't wait to share my results with my BMW mechanic, who was very skeptical to say the least!!! THANK YOU AGAIN FOR SHARING YOUR METHOD!!! 😃😃😃😃😃

      I’m really glad it worked for you! As evidenced by the comments, it doesn’t always work, and my bike seems to need to be re-zapped occasionally. I have no idea how or why it works, but it beats going back to the dealership…. Again.

    Pretty cool, about how short of a runway does it need? Im thinking of an a220, and am thinking of using a patch of grass in my backyard. I didn’t measure, but it should be around 120 feet with a 11 foot obstacle in front. How long of a runway does it normally need on a non-windy day

    • @Curtster1962
      @Curtster1962 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      120 feet is nowhere near enough runway, especially with the obstacle. The book says minimum ground roll is ~350 feet, and that’s with a PRO at the the controls. I wouldn’t try anything less than 1000 feet, personally.

    Was that a wheel landing? Looking at some SLSA this one is high on the list. While I like the look of a tail wheel dread the ground loop. Do you find crosswind landings to be difficult in the aerotrek. Doesn't look like much suspension off field landings probably not as good as a highlander.

    • @Curtster1962
      @Curtster1962 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I love my little Aerotrek. This is my first tailwheel plane, and I’m getting better at crosswind landings, but still I won’t fly if the wind is too much. I was taught to do three point landings, but once I learned how to wheel land, I almost always do… especially in a crosswind. And yeah, I’d imagine a Highlander is better at off road, but they won’t keep up with the Aerotrek in stock configuration.
