Great video, thanks for posting. The #23 917 shown here is the factory replica of the 1970 Le Mans winner, chassis -001. The actual 1970 Le Mans winning 917-023 is in the Carlos Monteverde collection and doesn't come out to play. The 917/30-02 shown is an Ex-Penske car and one of two they used to win the 1973 Can-Am title. I saw the 917/30 race for the 1st time at Laguna Seca in 1973.
The Porsche collection 917/30 now use's revised engine management & electronics . Porsche say ok this may upset the purist , however it make it much simpler to keep the car running without having to deal with the complex servicing needed during show events. Otherwise ever thing else is as it was. A small price to keep such a car running.
I saw Donohue race this (type of) vehicle at Mosport in 1973. He and Jody Scheckter (in another older 917) caught up to backmarkers midway through the 4th lap on a 2.5 mile track. Most amazing thing I had ever seen on a race track.
It's funny how we are effected by the sound so much. On another point, the more of an understanding of the workings, the more we can dissect the sounds into their component parts. Eg. Transmission, turbo, lifters etc.
Man, I also love that 911 GT-1 so much! What a great looking car, Zakspeed livery notwithstanding. In the works livery, it's one of my all-time favorites.
The Penske Porsche 917 Can Am car might be the most significant race car ever, it single handedly destroyed all its competitors, a series, forced a rewrite of many racing sanctioning bodies rules, it simply dominated
917K,,,, First Porsche to take Le Mans..... 917/10,,,,,The Porsche that STOMPED Can Am..... 956/962,,,, The Porsche that won, and declared,,,,,,,, I'M HERE TO STAY !!!! Thanks.
Gilby Moody No. He’s right but with the boost at 1.4 bar - which was all these old turbos could handle - it was probably not more than 1,400. Don’t get jaded about that, by the way. The turbochargers of 1973 were quite primitive by today’s standards and the boost dial wasn’t calibrated, only the wastegate. In any case there was a lot more to this car than just outright power.
Yeah, it's also not true. This engine _might_ have achieved it once on a test but it suffered a catastrophic failure (Ian Bamsey). However, in the inanity of the internet, if it happened once on a test bench it must have happened all the time on the track... The 912 block (to give the 917's correct engine designation) was both long and flexible, mainly because of the centrally mounted PTO and the lack of water jackets. Flexibility in an engine block is a Very Bad Thing. That and the fact that this engine was built out of Porsche 908 parts (designed for 350 hp) were the major limiting factors in the quest for power. Porsche engineers never quote more than 1,100 hp for it. Max boost was 1.4 bar.
TheThirdMan I don't deny that 1500 was seen for only a short peak boost, nor that horizontally opposed engines are dumb beyond a six. Water-cooled 911s are pretty strong, ut then you have a dumb rear-engine. Anyway, the car is iconic and 1100h0 or whatever WON EVERYTHING.
S C Flat 12 engines are okay in water cooled form but yes, not such a good idea in an air cooled design. You raise an interesting point about the 911. The later 3.2 litre 935s under maximum boost were good for better than 800 hp but raced with 750. I have done the maths on this and it actually does make sense. One thing I didn't mention about the 917/30 was the turbos. If you've never heard of Eberspacher turbos, it's probably because they came from a truck engine. Turbos had not reached the level of reliability they have today so, as long as the engine held together it won. When it did, Donohue spent most of his race lapping traffic.
Now that's a comparison. Even after all these years, the mighty Mclaren still sparks up debates. After all,he went toe to toe with the CanAm's! You could say that the F1 is the greatest road car ever, and these(Porsche 917,Ferrari 512m,Ferrari 312 pb) are the greatest race ones. Or the maddest. And i'm biased regarding the sound of these beasts
peoplehavetherights I don’t believe there are any replicas. One of the 917/30s is owned by Australian Peter Harburg, who is also a notable sailor (Google the boat “Black Jack”).
I've planned to go to the Historic Grand Prix at Circuit Zandvoort again to film these Porsches and many more historical supercars! This time with my new Camera and Microphone, so subscribe to see more! bit.ly/2s4PmLe
Friggen a 1500 hp twin turbo flat well technically v12 engine.if im correct.how friggen crazy, thats the same as a buggati chiron with a much larger engine and 4 turbos😨😨😎
The 927-30 is so small. A nuclear reactor strapped to a skateboard then you sit on that. WOW WHAT A THRILL.

Ecadman87 Same here. I saw the 917/30 race at Laguna Seca in 1973. Unbelievable speed.
Gregory Youngr I saw that same one at Watkins glen in can am same year.

I also saw this at Laguna, Mark Donahue driver. Remember it lapped the factory 917 during that race! Awesome times!
Look at all those ICONIC Porsches, pleasure overload!
Damn I miss the Can Am!
Only one that I'm missing is the 935 which I think was also a great Porsche! Who iswith me?! :)
If any race car (that actually competed in a medium/major racing series) deserves the title 'beast'...this car is it.
Man, I also love that 911 GT-1 so much! What a great looking car, Zakspeed livery notwithstanding. In the works livery, it's one of my all-time favorites.
Many of the claimed 1580 horses appear to be sleeping.
Jep! - I think it's about 1500 of them. BUT: Listen to the sound of the turbo. WONDERFUL!
Not sure but I think you can turn the boost down, which might be a good idea in these conditions.
How many men would be brave enough to let them all off the chain?
It's a parade of classic race cars... on a wet track. Irreplaceable history. Not a race.
those cars are no longer owned by production companies, but by private parties that don't want to crash their investment!

0:44 took my breath away
They were racing these things, man.
With ^1580 hp the car had a power to weight ratio of 2 hp for 1 kg
xXAlmdudlerXx Except That it did not have that much power.
@@thethirdman225 on full boost it does
Nick Pallatt Nope.
@Vince Binte it raced with around 1100hp
Back when reaching was the real deal. I miss those days
For gods sake, boost the dam thing, i wanna hear it sing out loud!!!
Wow it's faster than today's cars. 💗
Lol no not at all
More bhp, for sure. Faster? Not a chance.
Too bad we never got the Toyota 7. Might have mounted a challenge against the Turbo Panzer of Death.
More like 1100 hp during races. ;)
Your right, the 1500 horsepower was in qualifying trim.

Less than 21 PSI of boost to reach 1500hp. Amazing. Greatest car ever made. Better than the McL F1

I love the F1; the triple-seating, looks, motor, outboard shocks, amazing stuff.
I'll take the one with Jewer on the side ;-)
Lars Thomsen I don't want to be the fun spoiler but it is "Jever". Jever is a very famous german brewery making a very tasty beer :-)
Lars Thomsen I would too but it had a nasty habit of flipping.
How I love the real "Red Arrow"' , with enough power to kill most....;-)
I miss that cars of porsche, witch just ware the limit of what is possible. But they build the 919 und the evo so i have some hope.
The Kurz sounds much more impressive, to be honest. Probably because the guy in the 917/30 is scared of the loud pedal.
What do you mean by 911 GT1 3.2l H6 won 47 titles
Geweldig!
Thanks! :-)
its probably never ever going to happen, but it would be great to see an onboard video of the 917/30 being driven really hard.
Sadly I don't have any onboard footage, but yes it would be very great to see the driver fighting against that turbo boost!
How many Donohue 917-30 cars are out there? One is at my workplace. Petersen in Los Angeles. Are there replicas?
peoplehavetherights I don’t believe there are any replicas. One of the 917/30s is owned by Australian Peter Harburg, who is also a notable sailor (Google the boat “Black Jack”).
Wow that 917/30 in the wet? Talk about throttle control.... when pulling into the pit lane he's probably changing tires and his underwear
Driving a 917 would be better than sex.
The 919 evo before it was cool
This 917 is best than shit 919
Wwwhhhiiiisssstttllleee.

What are the 2 at 0:28 ?? I cant tell
The red one is the 917 Kurzheck and the one from Rothmans is a 962. For more info take a look at the video description.

And it weights a lot less and also possibly brings superior handling to the table.
