Shane MacGowan's widow shows items singer wanted taking at his funeral

- Shane MacGowan’s wife Victoria May Clarke took to the stage at the singer’s funeral on Friday, 8 December, as symbols of the singer were presented.
Items included a Gaelic football shirt, a copy of the Crock of Gold book featuring MacGowan’s art and writing, and a tray that Pogues singer Spider Stacy would “bash over Shane’s head” during gigs.
MacGowan’s funeral mass was attended by Irish leaders and the country’s biggest celebrities, who gathered to pay their respects at St Mary of the Rosary in Nenagh, County Tipperary.

Never been to a funeral where somebody held up a box of teabags and there was a round of applause - fair dos I suppose.

That was great. Poignant as well an all done respectfully an with good humour. That's the best Irish funeral I've seen in a long time.

He always had sense of humour. A real funny fucker given the chance.
This is how funerals use to be before funeral homes came along. My mom and grandma told me how the deceased would be put on a table or up against the wall in their casket and people would come over and pay their respects and tell stories or drink a beer. All the neighbors would come over. Then obviously there was a church service but I believe it helped so much with the grief. Love funerals like this.
Still common in ireland alot of people are waked at home still
Yep, we still do this in rural Ireland...an all community effort waking the deceased at home for at least a day and a night, neighbours making sandwiches, tea, bringing the whiskey, local farmers opening their fields for car parking space... directing traffic. Epic and sorely missed during covid
This is the way to remember and to celebrate

My sister visited Ireland in the Spring and when she asked me what she could bring back for me I told her "Irish tea"....and that was my introduction to Barry's. I can understand why Shane loved it. RIP and fly with the angels, dear Shane. I will think of you with each cuppa that I have....😢

@@Pizzageek-jc4xp Where do you live? Here in Canada, one of our grocery stores carries Barry's breakfast tea. Another place I find it is in a British store here. My sister is going back to Ireland in the spring and already knows what to bring back for me! 😊

This is similar to some West African burial rites where the coffin is filled with items believed the dead would need in his new world e.g. money, items family thinks he will make use of in the land of dead etc. wonderful funeral filled with love n culture
This was very unusual. The wife’s odd production was probably after the actual funeral Mass. (I didn’t see the whole funeral.) It was probably just allowed to appease the wife. She may have been misleading and this got out of hand. Shame on the priests who allowed this. None of those items are useful in Heaven.
@@LoantakaBrook Not at all nearly every catholic and indeed non catholic funeral in ireland.These items are not buried with the deceased its purely for the mass and rememberance of the deceased.They are some items that should not be allowed like the Budhist thing absolutely not in a catholic church thats no disrespect to budhism .

Not really, I was at a funeral where the deceaseds favourite CD was held up. It was Fleetwood Mac by the way!

A wake was at home with the body or in a pub without the body celebrating the (past) life of the deceased. But the funeral mass was and should be a different thing, it's for the onward journey of the soul hopefully to heaven or purgatory (through prayer to the big JC). Through his devotion to Mary mentioned in the mass hopefully he will be there now in peace. Pray for him.
He seems to have loved his life and was well loved by so many.
Totally inappropriate for a holy Mass. save it for a secular event.

Same. I want a natural burial as possible it's all my stuff that needs a coffin.
Thankfully it's normal for ppl of my faith to bury items that a person loved, totems, statues, jewelry etc. I just told my family save putting all the truly important things in after everyone leaves and place all my "wtf? Is she a weeb, a geek, or a psychopath?" for when everyone is in attendance. My husband just burst out laughing and said "Typical! You leave me to explain why all of the 90's miraculously ended up made into your funeral!"😂
The priests holding the items up was similar to the way they normally hold up "the sacraments".
Everyone was happy, I guess.
It's just something that I thought they might have done at the wake.

this would have been a normal part of ceremony in many a bygone Era...shame and the like in places where notables had goods buried with them would be shown as reminders. It is the newer religions who find it strange and even uncomfortable. His wife and priest fully understood the more universal symbology ❤

Where was the funeral held? At what Protestant Church?. Surely a Buddha would not be held up on the altar if it were Catholic?
In most places in Munster and Connacht we celebrate our dead and so do our Priests. I'm sure it's similar in most places around the country.
Most Catholic Priests in Ireland do not fit the stereotypical hard stern ardnósach fire and brimstone religious fundamentalist stereotype.

This is culturally acceptable here - the priest was part of the ceremony- he was helping the family show all the things that gave this person joy in life - it’s not all about verses of set prayers - life is a prayer.

OK guys....please don't be mean about this. It is part of every funeral I've been at to have the procession of gifts. These are symbolic of the life of the deceased and of the gift of their life to the world. Shane has left the world and humanity with the most amazing gifts. There is no shame here.
Hopefully Shane has found Jesus Christ in his life as his savior and Lord…

This is shameful and a slap in the face of Catholicism and God. Shame on these priests. The funeral is not the place for this in the Catholic Faith. All of this should be done at a wake or other party
you can bet your dollar bottom its drug related most of these celebraties end up that way no pity for them.
Its nice of them all to get this all together, but it just seems a bit much on the pomp and circumstance, considering he was really just a guttersnipe poet at heart.
