The Caterham is such a pure drivers car that even with if the 620R has a seqential transmission, instead of a "proper manual" I hear no people complaining about it having a sequential. I guess with 500kg and 620hp/ton it's nice to keep your hands on the wheel and your left foot at the brake.
I'd really like to see some crossover between Drag and Track battles. So here we see the Porsche win easily in the drag, but what about the same two cars in a track battle?
Torque, spread of torque, spread of power, gearing, aero, traction, etc - all have an effect. A lot of this race went the Caymans way because of the Caterham having to change gear almost constantly. Then aero takes over and it's game over.
Power to weight ratio actually favours the Porsche, not the Caterham. Driver included (say 75kg), the Porsche has a mass of 1415 kg (1340 + 75), the Caterham 615 kg (540 + 75). Power to weight: Porsche (230 bhp/t), Caterham (228 bhp/t). Porsche's UK website quotes the unladen (DIN) weight as 1340 kg, and Caterham's website quotes 540 kg.
there are people adding aero package to a caterham, running track days or maybe small club races. Another benefit of that old shape though, is that it can be registered as a vintage seven (at least in the US), while normal modern kit car may have a hard time getting registered to be road legal.
When you take into account the weight of the driver and of the fuel, the power ratio is clearly in favor of the porsche. And 140hp for a 2L engine, is that the late 70s? Caterham certainly offer more exciting engines than that without too much of a cost difference.
when you get up to speed there is no replacement for displacement/cylinders, a 4 cylinder will never keep gaining speed at the same rate as a 6cyl or 8cyl at higher speeds, (providing they have similar power:weight), so no surprise to me that the cayman took it after 60mph.
Basically the Caterham is a nice toy. The Cayman is also a lot of fun [maybe though not as much as the Caterham] however it is just so much more a daily driver, with 2 trunks, comfortable [when it needs to be]... I select the Cayman [or better even - the Boxster - open sky is so much worthier then the couple of more horse powers, stiffness and fractions of a second...
Caterham: 140bhp/550kg = 255bhp/tonne. Porsche: 325bhp/1320kg = 246bhp/tonne. But, if you assume an 80kg driver (plus helmet and camera equipment etc.) Caterham: 140bhp/630kg (550+80) = 222bhp/tonne. Porsche: 325bhp/1400kg (1320+80) = 232bhp/tonne. That makes a little more sense doesn't it?
I do not see the point in these battles of small, lower but lighter cars against bigger, heavier but more powerful cars. Throughout the entire video you mentioned power and not once spoke about torque. The Porsche has a tremendous more amount of torque than the Caterham. Something which is entirely different to power.
The reason the Caterham gets passed at that speed is aerodynamics. The Caterham doesn't have any, LOL. The Porsche has next to zero air resistance. It also has way more torque, which is also important at overcoming air resistance. If this test could be done in a vacuum, it would be more interesting.
Not that it would have mattered but you are not taking into account the weight of the driver in the power to weight ratio. Try with a more powerful 7 taking into account driver weight, then it would be fair!
The mention of the 620R begs the question! Get one and let's see! I'll take the Cayman GTS because I'm old and my stones are shriveled and shrunken! Also if it rains, I stay dry, if its hot, I have AC, and ladies my age prefer their hair to stay in place!
The Caterham has his windscreen intact and side windows which causes lots of wind drag over 60mph. Take them off (real easy) and greatly reduce the frontal area and see what happens. That is what you can easily do on the Caterham but no such easy advantage is there for the Porsche. Also no acount for driver weight, why not since they are in the vehicles ? Were fuel tanks both full or empty? Like to see those results after the easy mods. The difference would be far less under 100mph or the quarter mile.
You know that the driver weighs something right? Add the weight of the driver and the Cat is 215hp per ton and the Porsche is 229hp per ton! Not a very fair test of power to weight at all!
Well in actuality, Caterham beat the Cayman to 60mph. It was after that point Cayman took the lead and mocked the Caterman. Given it's light and rigid body with better off the line performance Caterman would be more of a challenge on short course race track. But given this is a mile drag race, well done Cayman beating a better power to weight ratio Caterman.
I know these comparisons are tongue in cheek but most Caterham's are much more powerful but I guess that's not the point. The Cayman is a great car but like all modern cars you don't realise what it's doing for you until you drive something like a Caterham. Granted the Cayman can be driven daily and is a great all round car but the Caterham is much more involving. Now if Porsche made a Cayman in the ilk of the MK1 911 GT3 then that might be a different story; however no one seems to do analogue cars anymore.
I'm sorry but neither of these cars is made for going as fast as possible in a straight line, if they were they would've just smashed in a 6000000 hp... They both, the Caterham of course even more, are designed to have fun while driving and to achieve a great cornering speed so I think that this test is a little bit redundant. Also it was pretty obvious the Cayman would smash the Caterham in a straight line...
without watching I know the Porsche is going to win because Power to weight figures are WRONG since no car ever does a drag race without a driver. A driver adds about 6% extra weight to the Cayman, but some 15% extra to the Caterham and of course at higher speeds, power to weight is nothing... only power matters since drag becomes more of a problem, not weight
Another stupid test. Why such a stupid pairing? On a track this would be a better pairing as it's not just about raw power but the delivery, handling, aero and brakes.
Harley (nice gay name) thanks for your comment. I only wish you had a better grasp of the English language, still each to their own. Best wishes knob jockey.
Thanks Paul and John, glad I'm not the only one who thinks this. They seem to be putting together some really awful comparisons at the moment. Bring back Harry I say and let's see some decent videos again. Harley, it seems you are in a class of one and it seems that same class has just one idiot in......
Power to weight ratio is a big thing at low speeds. When you get to 150 kph and higher, air drag dominates. And air drag doesn't care about mass, only power can beat it. In a drag race, you easily get to those speeds.
This is EVO Drag Battle segment, that's all they do, DRAG racing. Get it? So stop being illiterate, or go else where with your senseless comment attempts.
This is EVO Drag Battle segment, that's all they do, DRAG racing. Get it? So stop being illiterate, or go else where with your senseless comment attempts.
How does Porsche manage to keep making the cayman so damn ugly! The rear end is better than mk1 but still so badly lacking at least to my eye. Also everyone I ever met who owned one was as dull as ditch water...911s however rock.
This is stupid. I like Evo but common. Power to weight ratio is about going around the track.. The only time it becomes the be all to end all in drag racing is when you start getting under 7 second quarter miles. You can buy an American 3500 diesel truck for under 10k pounds, spend 10k pounds on the engine, drive train and suspension. And lay down 10 second quarter miles all day with a big heavy truck that would make that Porsche look like a joke. Then go home and drive your kids to school, your wife... Go haul your camper and drop it off at storage.. Help your neighbor haul his Tractor on trailer to the farm. All weighing more then both of those cars combined. But it would get it ass wooped around a track. It's about as stupid of a test.
Cayman s is one of the best drivers cars you can actually live with
Still wold take the 7, because it's the purest drivers car!
On the twisty road 7 would kill the Porsche
it would probably also kill you.
swunt10 lol
swunt10 that's half the fun of cars like that

I guess with 500kg and 620hp/ton it's nice to keep your hands on the wheel and your left foot at the brake.
MrFalconfly yeah you don't want to be using less than 2 hands lol
*So we have seen 0-100,*
*but what about 100-0?*
I'd really like to see some crossover between Drag and Track battles. So here we see the Porsche win easily in the drag, but what about the same two cars in a track battle?
Do aerodynamics play a part too?
Next, Can you have a Segway vs Yugo 45, might as well with these current battles.
That Cayman S... what an amazing car!
2.0L...you mean 1.6L
Torque, spread of torque, spread of power, gearing, aero, traction, etc - all have an effect. A lot of this race went the Caymans way because of the Caterham having to change gear almost constantly. Then aero takes over and it's game over.
Did they miss the 0-60 time for the caterham?
Power to weight ratio actually favours the Porsche, not the Caterham. Driver included (say 75kg), the Porsche has a mass of 1415 kg (1340 + 75), the Caterham 615 kg (540 + 75). At least somebody is thinking
Take them on a twisty B road and the Cayman would be left in the wake of the 7
911 Turbo S vs 911 GT2 RS pls. (best AWD vs best RWD)
This has been done(not by evo), the turbo S annihilated the GT2
should have put it against a similar priced caterham, the 620r and you'd see a complete different result
Yeah but which one is more fun to drive? Numbers and straight line performance mean nothing to me.
Do a track battle: cayman gts vs carrera (s?), at similar price.
Do they make a Cateram with an aerodynamic shell?
Yes, it's called the BAC Mono
there are people adding aero package to a caterham, running track days or maybe small club races. Another benefit of that old shape though, is that it can be registered as a vintage seven (at least in the US), while normal modern kit car may have a hard time getting registered to be road legal.
there is companies that make hard tops for 7 style cars but I don't think caterham have anything like that just the fabric one
***** and costs more than the caterham and Porsche combined
***** oh I know, I have one that I use on track days and I would pick it over next to any other car there is
Two of my favourite cars in one video :D
I recently got back from a 4 day road trip in that very Caterham which I'd hired. A cracking experience, great specced car.
When you take into account the weight of the driver and of the fuel, the power ratio is clearly in favor of the porsche.

The new Cayman is a truly phenomenal machine, indeed!!
Basically the Caterham is a nice toy.

I select the Cayman [or better even - the Boxster - open sky is so much worthier then the couple of more horse powers, stiffness and fractions of a second...
Cool :D Still, would like to see 640R in a battle.
I was expecting the Cayman to win on aerodynamics, but not this soon.
Caterham: 140bhp/550kg = 255bhp/tonne.
Porsche: 325bhp/1320kg = 246bhp/tonne.
But, if you assume an 80kg driver (plus helmet and camera equipment etc.)
Caterham: 140bhp/630kg (550+80) = 222bhp/tonne.
Porsche: 325bhp/1400kg (1320+80) = 232bhp/tonne.
That makes a little more sense doesn't it?

I'm amazed, i was expecting a better acceleration in the caterham

need more vids guys
Caterham dude..... Hey! Nice Bandit! Still my favourite lid...

That's the Stig himself LOL!

Come back Harry Metcalfe !!! or put Henry in charge. Subscriber from beginning, but perhaps not for long.
rather than getting mad at evo like nearly everybody else is can I just kindly suggest a rematch using the 620R
power to weight needs driver weight too... pretty obviously. Add 80kg and your power to weight ratios look more like 222 vs 232 for the cayman.
Why am I not surprised?
looking at horsepower is BS, you must look at Nm pullingforce because the Nn tells you how fast you will move from your spot
Drag coefficient had something to do with this.
what was the point? who didnt know that porsche would win?
power nearly always wins for similar power-to-weight ratio
I'd still have the caterham though. Such a character
The Roadsport is a 1.6 not 2l
in a drag race power wins every time especially the longer it is.
Pure power... same reason why is Veyron/SS way faster that Atom V8 or Caterham Levante
That driver in the Caterham had a Stig-like helmet!!! #Bringbacktopgear
Now try it around a track where handling is king.
I'm sorry but neither of these cars is made for going as fast as possible in a straight line, if they were they would've just smashed in a 6000000 hp... No replacement for displacement
Torque is for acceleration, Bhp is for top speed. So, what's the torque of the Caterham and the Porsche, than do the math again.
without watching I know the Porsche is going to win because Power to weight figures are WRONG since no car ever does a drag race without a driver. A driver adds about 6% extra weight to the Cayman, but some 15% extra to the Caterham
and of course at higher speeds, power to weight is nothing... only power matters since drag becomes more of a problem, not weight
They used the slowest Caterham and it is a lot cheaper than the Porsche the should get 2 with the same price
Now race the 620R
*typed that before the ending btw.
expected the caterham to do better tbh
1:00 It's a mini Stig!!!
Cayman S is the dream!
Another stupid test. Why such a stupid pairing? On a track this would be a better pairing as it's not just about raw power but the delivery, handling, aero and brakes.
then it would be a TRACK battle, not a DRAG battle you imbecile
Harley (nice gay name) thanks for your comment. I only wish you had a better grasp of the English language, still each to their own. Best wishes knob jockey.

Harley, it seems you are in a class of one and it seems that same class has just one idiot in......
mazdaman1980 it is not gay, it is unisex
mazdaman1980 haha
Its all about the drag
mini Stig in that Caterham? LOL...
Mercedes CLA45 AMG vs Subaru Impreza STI
No thanks.
time for the Caterham aero... who agrees????
No replacement for displacement!
I'm making a shirt out of that.
Cool! Send me one!
Forced induction is!!!
Ooooooh no its not! lol
fahad abbas nope. Yes you do get power but you will sound like a vacuum cleaner :P. There is nothing like all motor horsepower.
It is just wrong to put these 2 cars on drag race.
dat helmet in the caterham !
Re race against the faster Caterham.

Should of been done with the 620 not this.
let's take a car meant to handle and put it in a drag race and see if it loses, really stupid you didn't do a lap battle with it
thank you some sense on the internet FINALLY
This is EVO Drag Battle segment, that's all they do, DRAG racing. Get it? So stop being illiterate, or go else where with your senseless comment attempts.

God those walkie talkie noises are annoying.
I can use the Porsche in the rain and get Air conditioning.
Caterham needs a bigger engine simples
Drag races are boring, can't we see them on a track?
Cayman S for me
How does Porsche manage to keep making the cayman so damn ugly! The rear end is better than mk1 but still so badly lacking at least to my eye. Also everyone I ever met who owned one was as dull as ditch water...911s however rock.

It's about as stupid of a test.
Well that was obvious
No surprises here.
get them on a track
This would have been way cooler with real units of measurement.
Cayman GTS vs Carrera
Fake Stig is bad and you should feel bad.
Well I suppose the Caterham lost so that is bad enough :P
Caterham 640r would destry that
1 st comment
Fun. But pointless video
