Speaking across generations in a way no-one in history has, or I daresay could, since he has yet to stop! He has a great synergy with Vinnie Colaiuta who is perhaps one of the few people who can match his innovation.

Interesting to listen to JB now and hear all the players that came after him and are so influenced by his sound. One of a kind. Also, I like Jeff because it's not always just the Jeff Beck show. The other instruments play a vital role in his compositions. Great stuff.

Clapton good licks ,good sound but in the second half of the top ten.Eddy...took it where Hendrix left it ,massive sound (in those days) different technic,speed,creativity.All of this within a std rock and roll structure.Beck 's got all of the above plus musicianship,a musician's musician.

I really personally think that Jeff Beck should be no.1 i used to not believe in lists but he really is just the greatest cos everyone sounds the same but he truely sounds way above everyone hes of the greats whos taken influence from hendrix but didnt abuse it where he sounds like him like alot of hendrix jr's *ahem* john mayer *ahem* Stevie ray vaughn *ahem* as well as being influenced by jazz and fusion like the mahavishnu orhcestra. Hes just in a class by himself and no one comes close.
I've seen J Mac several times but my favorite was late 80's at a tiny venue in Ft Worth called Caravan Of Dreams. Maybe 150-200 people at the most. Jonas Helborg was on bass and Trilok Gurtu on percussion and anything else that could make a sound. We were about 15-20 ft from the stage. I distinctly remember their version of "Goodbye Porkpie Hat." It was awesome. Went backstage for a while, drank some Heini's, talked, autographs etc. Great memories of a great show!! {B>)
Charles Mingus' original 'Porkpie' was elegant, deeply emotional and beautiful on it's own. But to hear Beck's yearning, melancholic version brought it forward in proper spirit.

Of course he was the typical instrumental musician and joined some band that had a vocalist,,,,,,,, and then he got famous enough he didn't have to have a vocalist in the band..The best thing about Jeff is he hires females to drive his audience crazy because they think they are better than his female bassist? LOL
Everybody repeats themselves. Listeners have zero tolerance for zero-repetition players. Beck is one of the few who really stand out as original, and continues to improve and further develop an already phenominal style. Perhaps it's your listening ability that's worn out; not Becks riffs. I for one, will keep enjoying the "same old" brilliant phrasing, and rich tones that he produces like only he can.
@cestnoir: In case it helps your enjoyment, please know that '70's Fusion & Prog rock played around with compositional forms trying to test the boundaries of what "works together and compliments" (not that it always worked out). This song is compositionally tame compared to contemporary stuff like RTF/Medieval Overture, Jan Hammer/Magical Dog, most cuts by Yes. -- many themes, heavy gear shifting. Also, maybe check the Blow-by-blow original?
For those who think this is all just a note-heavy, self-indulgent wank, and who haven't taken a music appreciation course: Look up "text painting." Simply put, it's "the musical technique of writing music which reflects the literal meaning of a song." (See Wikipedia, "Word Painting") This tune is absolutely a musical reflection of the title. It's not about showing off technique; it's technique being used to serve the spirit of the music.

I still have my Blow By Blow album I bought nearly 40 yrs ago. Well, I have the cover and sleeve but the vinyl is so thin it's nearly gone:>) I got to where I could play all the guiter riffs and bass lines and some of the drums (no keys at the time) but this song was the hardest to learn on guitar. I saw Jeff in '75 with John Maclaughlin encore with this song, going faster+faster when Beck finally threw in the towel and said "ladies and gentleman, the master of guitar MR John Maclaughlin".
and Beck is still coller then any of them. and can also draw an audience. I spent around 5000 houres practicing my guitar, and I'm still young. with that much time I could have finished any game twice. your fighting a lost cause. guitar is some thing you devote your life to. guitar hero is a game. your better of reading a book.
