I repair and refurbish computers for a living. What these fellas at Gamestop are doing is testing the consoles a couple of minutes and selling them. I hope they are REALLY cheap, because they are not putting work on it at all. I get notebooks and desktops from several brands. All of them get tested, BIOS updates and then disassembled, cleaned, air dusted, and thermal paste is replaced. Don´t expect less.
Chances are those marks on the consoles are from the bubble wrap. They’ve probably been boxed up for a long time and a chemical reaction has occured between the plastic and the packaging. A similar thing will happen if you wrap your controllers cable around the controller. Over time the wires silicone coating will eat into the plastic.
That’s interesting because I keep tabs on GameStop’s website almost every day, and I bought these the day they were available. And unboxed them less than a week after I got them. So they must’ve been boxed up in gamestops warehouse for a long time before being listed for sale
Dang if bubble wrap does that In storage, ima rethink my storing ideas for all my collectibles 😂😂😂 since their all bubble wrapped and boxed up 😂😂😂 But don’t think bubble wrap would do that tbh
I don't know what else people expect from a 9 year old console, there's only so much they can do with the outside case unless they put a new aftermarket one on and raise the price.
Fun fact about GameStop: they are surprisingly picky about what you bring them with older consoles at least. I don’t think they can give you a 3rd party controller because I doubt they’d accept a 3rd party controller with a console.
why the magic eraser though? still. you'd think they would get the point by now. i bought a used wii from them in 2014 and it looked like they sanded it. and they still do it a decade later?
yeah idk, it's a gamestop signature lol. I'm not quite sure how they haven't gotten the memo that they shouldn't be using magic eraser. I think someone commented on a previous video and said gamestop does the magic eraser trick to deter resellers from buying their consoles.
Probably better off buying off ebay. A week ago I got a PS3 Slim off ebay for $80+$15 Shipping and it was in fairly good condition. I dont get why they insist on using magic eraser for everything. Just spray a microfiber cloth with some non-residue cleaning solution and wipe it down.
I use baby wipes 😂😂😂 non alcohol-all natural baby wipes been doing that with every “used” item I get 😂😂😂 since it’s plastic, use armorall wipes to shine it up…. Been doing that for… just recently actually lol
I bought a refurbished original PS3 from them about 10 years ago and they sent me an OEM controller with a gigantic chunk missing in between the 2 analog sticks, I thought that maybe it was broken in shipping but the piece was nowhere in the box. There is no way they didn't see that when packing it, that is the last time I ever bought a single thing from them; thank you for the great videos.
I recently re-pasted my PS3 Slim and the paste looked a lot like this one did. It was still okay and seemed to work fine but I still did it bc I love that thing and want it to last as long as I can make it
I think that's what scares me the most about buying a used retro console. that the inside is desert amounts of dust and dead bugs inside. It's gross to have that in your house. I don't feel confident enough in my own ability to fully disassemble a console and put it back together to check it myself
With how hard it is to keep those L1/L2, R1/R2 together when it's put back together I highly doubt they do. I don't know why but it's harder than a switch joy con to me.
They probably used furniture polish to clean them, that’s why they have slick residue on them, wouldn’t be surprised. When I was a kid my dad always had to remind my mom to not spray his home theatre with furniture polish. This was in the 80’s 😂
I do console refurbishing every now and then as a side hobby and I can't stand having dust, dirt or debris in them. The funny thing is one time I purposely looked for the nastiest/broken PS2 I could find (to restore it) on Ebay and even that came nowhere close to a desert PS3.
Honestly Jacob, you should visit GameStop headquarters in Grapevine, bring these bad refurbished systems and ask for Ryan Cohen to look how subpar these refurbished systems are. I’m sure he is highly interested in improving the quality of this.
The bubble wrap is marking the shell... They're wiping it down and literally throwing it in the box and the pressure from the uneven surface of the wrap is making the pattern.
the bug in question was a chinese beetle, a pretty invasive species that looks like a ladybug. oddly enough I have never seen one of these in a console.
So funny enough I'm just seeing this video I went into GameStop yesterday to go pick up FF7 and I was talking to a buddy of mine who still works there and he was telling that during a meeting they were talking about they were planning to start carrying more retro stuff in store and that shipments from distro were going to be including more retro games and systems. I guess GameStop warehouses has a bunch of old retro games still stored away and enough to supply high traffic stores only.
Just wanted to say I love this series of you buying consoles and such. I actually live very close to the Retro V games store. I want to go there and just see wtf is going on.
Magic eraser is the biggest villain when it comes to retro games and restoration, the amount of "odd tinkering" wannabes busting up consoles with magic erasers is unreal.
Still got a few piano consoles from my old job, thankfully all worked, and a few repairs got them up to full power again. Already have one modded too, so now I'm wondering what kinda hard mods i can do to it.
I usually use Tomb Raider for PlayStation games to test the controller, often Chronicles, as I can easily test all the buttons and the Analog sticks wh ile I'm at it! Also, they're not actually up to date, my fat 80GB jus updated the other day to 4.91, I went out and left it to it as it was downloading slow, though, I do know what you mean about the feel from whatever cleaning solution they've clearly used and I love older consoles, this is quite painful for me to look at... the missing feet... and what the hell did they do to that Analog stick...? I'll probably stick with my old classic PS3, could do with a bigger Hard Drive, though, mind... still got the original in it! Oof, not fair... I want a PS5, but not a Spider-Man one and I'm in the UK anyway on PAL Region, I highly doubt I even could play any game I got from you... I feel left out...
I been trying to get into the ps3 but i started emulating it because it was easier to do in my area since most ps3 sold in my area cost the same price as a use gpu for computers
Hey Jacob I know it’s weird to ask on here but your good with technology, my buddy bought his ps5 yesterday and had studdering on all his games , he tried changing a bunch of settings and it didn’t work, only thing he didn’t try was a different hdmi. Do you think that is the issue or that he just got a bad ps5?
Looking at this video I'm glad I found a 120 GB PS3 slim for 80 $ I've been playing uncharted 2 for like 30 minutes every Day and the fan turns on but it ain't too loud and it is a very demanding title to run so it's been holding up ok clearly the console I bought isn't clean but I'll keep testing it the pawn shop gave me 15 day warranty any advice on what I needed to checkout without opening the console to determine if I keep it or return it and I really appreciate this video thanks for giving some time to the old good PS3❤️
Gotta ask how do you find your consoles, do you get deals or are you biting the bullet for your videos. I cant count how many hard drives ive replaced in ps3s. Only ask because the texas load and the goodwill load. People know i fix stuff so i get all kinds to repair but when it comes to shopping i got to markets , yard sales and goodwills. Not as much as id like. Just wondering if you have a system. Thanks
gamestop's most desperate way to get these consoles out the door to make some sales. I present to you gamestop's half assed cleaning solution, comes complete with a not so good looking console and hit or miss you may get a decent condition controller or a really crappy one, and it's a pretty dusty rusty console at that. well there ya have it folks
This video is so obviously faked that it's sad. GameStop is a stand up, reputable company for ALL gaming needs both modern AND retro and would not in under ANY circumstances be so careless with any refurbishment job. GameStop trying to get back into “retro” consoles??
At least they aren’t priced at double market value like some other stores… 👀
Xbox 😊
And that "some other store” is dkoldies 😂
😊👍🏼
True that
GameStop is nothing but a rip off company
I swear, I'm gonna apply at gamestop just so they have someone who does things right 😭
I’m sure they won’t let you lol. They probably have a specific way they do things that take the least amount of time
@@jrob0021 That's McLame.
@@jrob0021 The process consists of lightly dusting the unit and throwing it in a box with whatever accessories from the random pile in the corner.
Try saving every gamestop then.

I've been seeing more ps3s in store recently ( they have been pretty cheap and usually the fat version)
You’ve seen them at GameStop?
@@jrob0021 yes literally a week or 2 ago it was a fat one too not slim for about 95 I think It said
@@pk_ikeohh interesting, what state are you in? I might have to go check out some GameStop stores 👀

Quality control at these companies is completely over, it's like they just grab a bunch of random crap and dump it in a box and ship it out..
Considering the profit margins are veeeerrrry slim I don’t blame them
GameStop=" We just don't give a F0CK"...
Well, most people on the internet are no fu... FOCKIN better. Reddit is abysmal.
Idk about anyone else but seeing consoles cleaned by magic eraser gives me chills in a bad way

First step is confidence man. You got this!
PS5 is really easy to take apart and put back together
I am curious to know what the controllers look like when you open them to see if companies actually clean them

They could have used Pledge dust cleaner. That stuff always leaves my hands slick and greased.
I was today years old when I found out ALL Ps3 consoles can play PSone Games......

I still have my PS3 slim. The controller doesnt have battery life now (basically now wired) but the actual console works like new. Its crazy!
I think it's time to come up with a law against calling used electronics "refurbished", f-ing scam.

Well dude, great episode. Big fan here 🙂 Really missing custom console episodes from ebay, those where super fun to watch 😀
It really hurts seeing that oem controller considering how expensive PS3 controllers can be.
The white spots on the consoles are from the bubble wrap. Also; Magic Eraser, or Brillo pad?
White slick solution!! 😮😅 I would have one rubber gloves before I touch that. Lol
They should be arrested for destroying the best console of all time
I’d rather it have several deep scratches than it be sanded all over
