I'll attach a link to the whole playlist below, as there are quite a few other channels participating!
PLAYLIST: • Winter 2022 Ugly Duckl...
The goal is to find the ugliest furniture possible and make it AMAZING! Well.. SPOILER ALERT... things don't always go as planned and if you've seen my other videos, you KNOW that I don't run from a challenge. This one, however... this one broke me. 🤣 I had to walk away from a piece for the first time in a LONG time, but I still wanted to put out SOMETHING for this, so I started working on a different piece that had its own set of issues. This second piece was a GORGEOUS makeover, even if it wasn't at all what I wanted for this particular challenge.

Out of everyone that I follow for furniture transformations, and I follow a lot of people….you are, by far, my favorite! I learn so much from your projects, and the quality of your work is outstanding. Now when I come across an issue on a piece that I’m working on, I ask myself….. “What would Angie do?” Thank you for sharing your amazing talent, and maybe one day, I will be half as good as you are. Can I ask what those “artist markers” are? That would be an excellent tool, to have on hand! 😊

You're a wizard painter. I would spend days trying to get that spot to color match and not get it to look that good. Just amazing. Love the black paint and how it amplifies the wood tones. It draws the eye perfectly to the beautiful veneer. Also that hemp oil pour into the drawer shot - so satisfying!

    1) I don’t consider the first piece a fail because you have that amazing hardware! 2) Thank you for showing the fixes. I’m more likely to consider taking on a broken piece after seeing how you’ve fixed the broken bits. 3) the black paint beautifully frames the drawers and makes the different wood on the top and sides less obvious. 4) The end result on the spot on the top is truly amazing!!!👏

In my new workspace (I’m currently redoing my workroom), I’ll have a bit more room to maneuver so should be able to take some “after” video instead of only still shots. Mainly just an issue of only having so much room (and thus only so many angles from which to film). That should get better in the new space as I’ll have a longer wall to stage on. :-)

A few things I appreciate about your videos: you thoroughly explain why you're doing what you do, you treat each piece of furniture as an individual piece of art and let it's own individuality guide your choices(some pieces are better painted, and some are better being restored, I 1000% agree with you there), you show us mistakes you make and then explain how to fix or work around those mistakes (one of the biggest reasons to not just fast forward to the end reveal, I don't want to miss any of the little nuggets of wisdom you drop), you have an outstanding attention to the details (like inside the drawers or underneath/behind the furniture), you film and edit your videos expertly, and to top it all off- you have a pleasant voice to listen to.
Anyway, I just wanted to let you know that the work you do is appreciated, inspiring, and educational. I look forward to seeing more in the future.

I`ve had a dresser similar to this one that I started on 3 months ago. I too try to stay away from painting a wood piece unless I have no choice or I feel a hankering to paint. :-) I stained the top, drawers and sides and have been struggling on what color to paint the trim around the dresser and in between the drawers. I can`t tell you how many times I stood in front of the dresser, trying to imagine which paint would look good. I even considered staining it but I knew with all the wood filler I had to use, the stain job would look splotchy and I just couldn`t bring myself to do that. Your video cleared the cobwebs out of my creative mind and a paint decision was made. Your piece turned out absolutely beautiful. I`m hoping I will have the same results. Thank you!!!

    BEAUTIFUL! Wow. Just. WOW!
Some of your pieces in their ‘before’ state give me such negative visceral reactions- it actually makes me laugh how strongly I dislike some of them due to their weird-plastic finish or, in the case of the ‘fail’, the contact paper. That’s something I very much appreciate about you & others: you can see beyond those things and find the diamonds in the rough! Either completely transforming the piece or taking the hardware and calling it when a piece has served its time and needs to end its furniture journey!!! So amazing.

Angie, you have become my new “rabbit hole”. I can watch your videos all day. I can’t express how valuable and timely this particular one is for me. My mother loved to refinish furniture, had a great eye for quality pieces, and had a dresser and highboy in the George Hepplewhite school from 1951 that she lovingly refinished at least two, if not three times over the years. The last go at it was in the late ‘70’s or perhaps early ‘80’s painted in an avocado color, antiqued with who knows what, and the veneer top finished with some sort of a Jacobean stain which looks perfect to this day (other than a few cigarette burns🙀). I recently toyed with selling the two pieces, but sentiment prevailed and I decided to try and bring the top back to a more natural state and lighten up the rest of the piece with one of the Fusion whites., adding antiquing glaze or perhaps aging wax to highlight the fluting on the frame and legs. After seeing this video I realize that these beautiful pieces need to be stripped naked before deciding on how to proceed. Her care, and perhaps painting over the years totally preserved the integrity of the pieces. They were always used in her master suite, I’ve continued the tradition. Although I never loved them, I appreciate the exquisite craftsmanship and can’t let go without trying to bring them into the 21st century. You’ve provided the inspiration to not just “slap some paint on them”, but to honor their bones. Thank you, thank you, thank you!

The beauty here is the minimal use of black as a contrast, allowing the wood to shine. You would normally see this all black except the top and drawer faces. Less is more. Top job.

I love that you bring the wood back to life again. The depth of the colors, especially red woods, are beautifully highlighted by your hands.
BTW, you didn't fail in not reviving that first dresser. You made a conscience decision to put your time to better use. You're the best!🙂🥰

Pretty. Love how the black makes the wood pop. But I love that it’s mostly wood. Can’t cover up the great craftsmanship.

Paint or stain or clear coat you do beautiful restoration to pieces that otherwise would have been left to perish. And I wouldn’t consider that first piece a fail. Sometimes they just can’t be helped. Can’t say you didn’t try. Your ugly ducking is now a beautiful swan. Wonderful job!❤️

You’re so talented I think that you could’ve actually done some thing with the green dresser, but you’re smart enough to walk away! You can tell you have an artist background because your colors are just awesome. This piece is absolutely beautiful! Take care!

Another amazing job! I'm someone who loves wood furniture, but I'm also realistic enough to understand that not everything can be saved and kept with a wood finish. You keep so much of the beautiful stained wood, and I love that. The painted areas are done sparingly, and really enhance the beauty of the piece. It's a shame that original dresser was so poorly made, but I'm in love with the finished second piece!

You did an amazing job! You didn’t just give up, you kept going. The piece is beautiful! In the south if we have a spot on the furniture, you just put a doily on it, or a dresser scarf. Yep, those are real words! Thanks for showing so many techniques.

Finally ordered Odies Oil…am excited to use! This piece is so charming and I love the sheen on its handles. I soon will be embarking on an effort to restore many antique family pieces my Mom purchased from an old college dorm that was being redone. (Back in the 50’s!) She made a haul! All these years ( I am 71) these pieces have been with me ~ either stored or being used in our home. In have watched hundreds of hours of restoration videos, plus have done a few pieces over these many years. I am SO READY and itching to begin! Wish me good vibes and happy relations with my furnitures! Thanks again ~ always teaching your viewers valuable lessons. I will be enjoying your work as I journey on this learning adventure.

What a gorgeous piece! The black paint is an excellent foil for the mahogany. I love that you respect rather than worship the wood; purism is overrated. I totally appreciate your knowledge and skills, so many levels above a "furniture flipper". Keep up the good work!

OMG. So stunning. I haven’t been a fan of black but your use of it has inspired me. A more intense contrast to the lovely wood than white would be. And to add to Joyce’s comment below - my thought whenever looking at furniture is “what would Angie do”. Of all the channels I follow yours and Mad City Modern are the most inspiring. It’s almost a spiritual experience! If you can see the potential in a piece of furniture what could you see in the potential of a garden, a house a person!

Ok one more thing lol I totally agree with your opinion on painting certain pieces. There’s nothing wrong with painting an any piece that YOU choose to paint or not paint. It’s your project, your time and YOUR decision. So don’t feel bad or feel like you have to explain the choices and decisions on your projects. Bc what you do ALWAYS turns out to be Gorgeous and tasteful and classy.
