Insecurity, depression, anxiety, jail, relationships, and sobriety? - (Episode 150)

  • I have a confession... Like you, I also experience anxiety, fear, depression, and wonder if things are going to get better.
One of the reasons why I quit drinking, was to eliminate the variables of not being my best self. To have a better chance of being able to COUNT ON MYSELF every morning. To get better sleep. To have better mental health. To be able to achieve the things that really matter most to me.
But in the attempt to have my cake and eat it too, I learned a few hard lessons: Jail, love lost, bankruptcy, and more.
We burn the candle at both ends. We shave precious time off the ends of our lives and create distance between the people we love, including ourselves.
I like to say that "I tried everything to quit alcohol except for quitting alcohol".
Going back to the school of life doesn't always look like 4 walls and student loans; sometimes it's just sitting yourself down, shutting yourself up, and having a real listen into what the universe and your higher self have to say to you.
Can you help us by sharing this video? I Have A Confession - (Episode 150) - • Insecurity, depression...

Heavy video Jae. That's awesome that you mentioned the Hero's Journey. A friend introduced it to me a few years ago and it blew me away. I couldn't stop asking everyone "You ever heard of the Hero's Journey? It's amazing!"
I've definitely gone through the abyss and rebirth a few times it seems; I don't think that's a one-off event. I'm a few years older than you and I've been around. I've seen some shit, done some shit etc. But I'm a pretty reflective guy and as the saying goes "When you lose, don't lose the lesson."
I'm grateful that I've come out okay to face more challenges time and time again, and my relationship with booze etc is just another challenge.
Glad I'm out here fighting. Glad I found your channel. Glad for SO much in life, although sometimes I think I could be a bit more appreciative. I'm only human.
If I could give you a great big hug right now I would Jae! Keep it up!

Hello Jae, once again a video that hits home.
It's not easy to continue to stay sober but I find it's all about taking one day at a time and it is now much easier to no thank you when offered a glass of something without feeling like I am missing out.
Self-doubt, depression, anxiety and all those negative emotions we have are inevitable and can be incredibly destructive and having a drink or three will help overcome them and take the edge off.......NO.
Recognising that and dealing with them is hard but not impossible.
I try and find a positive in every situation; that's easy to say and always difficult to do but it can be done and of course a big thank you for your honest approach to staying sober.
Today is one year and 1 day for me being sober and I can't say how proud I am of myself.
Is it wrong to be proud? I don't think so.
Keep the faith and keep sober.

I think that one very important concept is competitiveness. When you are competing to be the most important person on the company softball team or the employee who most deserves to be promoted to supervisor of all 18 people in your section of the company, you don't want to show any weaknesses or vulnerabilities.
Since many people think that strong, tough, persistent people make the best leaders, a person must suppress all points of weakness and all stumbles.
Why is it considered "out of character". for the boss to say that you can leave early to see your child perform in a school play or a band concert?
Would the company really lose that much money if you did not make the last three sales visits of the day to go to a school activity once every three months?

I had to pause at 7:44. You mentioned your dad dying. I had to comment. I lost my dad (And my mom later) . That took its toll on me also. But the bad part was, I wasn't there. I was in a different state and couldn't see them. It hurt. I did see my mom once before she passed. My addiction came from my dad. He slowly died from drug use. I don't do drugs, but alcohol is taking over me. But I just had a visit with my GP (doc) on how to slow down and quit on my own (he's been my doc for 20 years. I trust his advice). I've been to the hospital where they overdosed me on drugs to get me off of alcohol but I don't want to do that again. I showed him your video on how to cut back slowly and, surprisingly, he agreed!

    • @GettingSoberAgain
      @GettingSoberAgain  8 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

Tapering is always adviseable. But having a solid date lined up for quitting is the most important part of that equation. That's why we always suggest the 10 in 10 method. If you consume 10 units of alcohol a day like I did, set a date to quit 10 days from today. Have your normal amount of alcohol today, one less tomorrow, one less the next day until you hit 10 days later and you're down to zero.
too many people keep flirting with tapering as an excuse to keep drinking and then never actually quit drinking while staying imprisoned in a state of tapering.

Well ive been steadily catching your vids daily, hopefully more than one. Definetely made to order. Ive been working on my sobriety with some serious intention since 2017. I come from a long line of alcoholics. All the men in my family are dead because of this. Ive been using any and all tools available. Strangely enough I only came across your channel recently for some reason. I just tell myself I willed it into existence because up to now your content and understanding of alcoholism is pretty much made to order for me. Maybe its a generational thing, I dont know, but you definetely speak my language and I really appreciate you doing this. Is the channel still active? I started digging in on older videos I guess, any suggestions?
Again thank you Jae. Ive been sober but i'm smart enough to know its to early to even begin counting days, which I don't like honestly. I'd like to just open my eyes one day and realize its been a month. Which has been a rare occurence in my life, rare but it exists.

Think of it like this: none of the other men before you were brave enough to STOP the generational trauma.
you WILL BE that person. and you WILL BREAK THE CURSE. Be the change you want to see in your family. And when you do, you will be able to pass these foundations on to help those that need it most.
it is a blessing and a huge opportunity. life is short, but our legacy depends on the words we share, the actions we commit to, and the hugs we give along the way.
and yes, we are still active lol

Lenka how did you find us!! They say the brighter you let your light shine, the more undeniable your presence.
While we hid in the darkness for so long, we avoided being truly present. There will come a time when those around us need us most, but will we be there mentally? Will we be there emotionally, spiritually, or physically?
I'm happy you're here. And while I have your attention:
      1. Be kind to yourself
      2. Know that you are practicing. Practice makes PROGRESS!
      3. Be patient with your sobriety journey (we all learn lessons along the way)
      4. REPEAT 1-3 🙏🏼

I have a question for you Jae:
Do any of your old "party" friends know you do this channel? Have you ever been outed?

    • @GettingSoberAgain
      @GettingSoberAgain  ปีที่แล้ว +4

I'm fairly public, but I do keep my different creative endeavors separate from my personal pages for the most part.
I actually went out on memorial day and went to an after party at this huge mansion (totally wasn't expecting this out of my evening). Some of the people there were talking to me about the channel. It was great.
It's important to me not to preach. It's also important to "be me for free"; to hang out and have a good time without people needing to know that I happen to be sober.
There are generally 3 categories, people either know, Know and don't care, or don't know. General, I know. But also it's important to me to not have any one particular thing be MY IDENTITY. I am not the artist guy, the sober guy, the DJ guy, I'm just Jae. Make sense?
A lot of people who I used to DJ with, or make art with, see that I am now just more productive which is also important to me. I want to be able to show people that they can still be creative, social, and themselves....SOBER!
