As a DIYer teenager in the 80s I think the head gasket brand to use was called “Monotorque”…….. only torqued em once basically…..
And back then we used a fair bit of aviation glue around the water jackets….. Permatex I think…..
I also see these days once the cam is in some people will put the lifters in and spin the cam with a drill to ensure all the lifters spin……
and if the don’t they shim the affected lifter bores with copper shims…….
That all came as news to me…..
Apparently as part of the casting the bottom of the lifter bores kicks out a afew degrees to facilitate the spin as you explained
and if that angle is wrong from the original casting the lifter doesn’t spin…… so now they even check that….!!!!
Easy fix in that case would be roller lifters and new cam to match….

mono torque stood for tighten them down and replace them after one season because they would leak again I hated it when they would supply them when you did a head gasket repair think I hardly used them in all my years as a mechanic

Isn't it the graphite that made the gaskets so good on the V6 commodores ? That graphite burns and seals against the surfaces....

I didn't see any sealant go on the head bolts?
I'm sure some of them go to water jacket
