Nice setup. You can convert your undergravel filter to an anoxic filter by regulating the water flow. Very slow moving water in and out of the substrate will create the low oxygen environment needed for denitrifying bacteria to grow on the bottom of your tank. My 40gallon goldfish tank has the same undergravel filter plate that you used. I regulate the water flow by decreasing airflow from the uplift tube. Finally, after 6 months my nitrate is going down from 40ppm/week to 10ppm/week.
I am using a similar undergravel filter, though my 10 gallon tower itank only needed two plates! I'm running one lift tube and a box filter for mechanical and chemical filter off one air pump. I hid the lift tube with Anubias, and the box filter with driftwood like you hid your powerhead.
That was a pretty cool build, I will try the UGF myself early this year but I will also be using plants and nutrient rich soil, but to prevent the substrate from reaching the bottom I am planning to use filter floss and then everything else above.
@@monlegaspi To be honest I am not completely sure since I have never done it before, but I think it might work, I am planning on setting up a slow moving plenum using an UGF so as long as the water continues leaking slowly from the top to the bottom it should be alright.
@@Sinserg I am a complete novice but I believe the problem you will eventually run into is that the filter floss will be completely clogged, essentially stopping all water flow through it. Maybe it can work with a very slow moving plenum?
You can use some mesh to prevent any gravel from seeping down under the ugf. Check out Dr. Kevin Novak's videos on how one can use this old tech to have excellent biological filtration not mechanical. The lift tube ideally should be the same height of the substrate and use a very low power air pump. Powerhead will be very strong. Idea is to move water very slowly underneath the ugf. Good video anyway.
Nice setup, but I much prefer the Lee's Premium under gravel filter. Much more stout and effective. Costs a little more up front, but worth the extra cost and literally lasts forever.
I just installed a Lee's in a 65 gallon for fresh water 18x24 inches with two power heads. I was amazed after one week how fast the aquarium was cycling.

Not regularly, but when you notice the water quality declining, it might be some of the gravel already full of debris just like any other filter media that clog (very rare in low stocking tank). If that happen, stir the gravel and suck the debris that float. The plate never need cleaning. There can be some debris under the plate, but they rarely cause any trouble.
In my opinion, cleaning fish faeces is just waste of time. It only has like 20% of total nitrogen from fish food. Most of the ammonia is produced by fish from their gills, not from those faeces. With low stocking level in home aquarium, it's not required at all to keep our tank healthy. Those faeces will disintegrate, they won't stay forever and clog our filter. There will be brown mulm that accumulate, but those mulm aren't fish faeces. They are different thing. Those mulm can clog the filter if we are overfeeding with low protein fish food. If you are so strict with tank cleanliness, just use gravel with color that can hide them.
