Third Time's The Charm | 2021 Genesis G80
ฝัง

- Genesis started as a novelty in Hyundai's American lineup in 2009 but its popularity helped to justify the brand we now know as Genesis. The flagship of the Genesis brand is of course now the G90, but the G80 will always be the Genesis of Genesis. Now in its third generation, the 2021 G80 sports an all-new platform, new engines and a dramatic update to the brand's interior and exterior styling. It's also entering a world with less competition now that Lexus has killed off their GS sedan for 2021. Does that mean third time's the charm? Not quite... You see, the G80 had already outsold the Lexus competition in this segment for 9 out of the last 10 years...

Genesis has increased their design quality. I think they are the best in the class
Look up their designers they are all from Bentley, Lamborghini...
@@Warrior11117 Err, that point is irrelevant considering Genesis isnt the only automobile company to copy from others. Its not the first not the last, but considering that the car is good, it doesnt matter that it takes things from others, the way I see it, a mashup of great things is still a great thing as long as it brings something new.
Compared to Chryslers and Chevys, I agree. ;)
Taki jump force
@Vibe Umm no you would not...They are not even in the same class and nor did Hyundai intend to compete with Rolls or Bentley.
Genesis absolutely nailed it. I have the current gen and it is amazing. Can't wait to upgrade to this new one. I am sure the 3.5 will perform well too as it will be the same engine in the revised Kia Stinger. Very easily tuned for increased HP.
Sure you do
Got an 18 g80 myself and love it to death, but holy crap does the 2021 blow it away in features. I'll wait until 22/23 to do a trade in for the 21. Should be able to get one with under 10k for about 35 or less easy. Got my 18 with 5400 miles on it for only 34700 in early 2019, and it has almost all the luxury packs too.
Looking forward to that dual-clutch too since the first g80s shift a bit slow.
Have fun when the turbo goes....
Finally, real buttons and no piano black plastic.
Genesis is done being a follower, they are releasing this just when the 2021 5 series and E class are coming into the market. Koreans want that smoke.
Period.
Except you look like a "wannabe rich" when you pull up to a German.
Still are baffled on how to build a passenger seat unlike the premium German sedans. Hell, even a 3 series is better in M Sport version.
@@hby7768 I guess if you care what people shallow enough to judge you by your car badge think, then that's a valid concern.
AirLancer The only reason this car exist is to compete with the luxury brands. They could have easily made a Kia with this kind of build quality. If you’re buying something like this, you want some prestige without paying the high premium. And in doing so “you look like a wannabe rich”. If you don’t want “shallow people judge you” maybe you shouldn’t be “shallow” yourself and buy that Kia instead.
Giving praise to a car brand in an attempt to gain recognition without considering how others view this brand relative to its competitors is an oxymoron don’t you think?
It’s crazy how the established Japanese luxury brands lost their way in the midsized sports car arena. The Lexus GS, Infiniti M and Acura Legend started off as great cars and worthy competitors against their European rivals. Now they’re dead and Genesis is the only Asian brand to compete against the Audi A6, Mercedes Benz E Class and BMW 5 series.
The new TLX should help that and the Lexus gs-f is a fun monster of a sedan, but for the most part that’s very true.
@@caglioso The TLX is FWD and the GS-F is dead like the rest of the lineup. What he said is true- the Japanese are too cowardly to even compete in this segment.
@@nedschneebly4829 acuras have always been FWD. That's not really the issue. The old TL / TSX were really good and sold very well.
Calisto Riviera The new TLX is Acura’s entry level car that also serves as a sports car in the Type S trim. Before the TL/TLX there was the Legend, which was eventually replaced by the RL/RLX which is now dead.
I'm gassy
This reminds me of the lunch of the Lexus LS400, back in the Fall of 1989
Clearly two steps ahead of every other vehicle in its class. Hyundai's Genesis brand is on it's way to the top
In fact, they already are at the top of J.D. Power and Associates Initial Quality Study, two years running
Hyundai has finally smartened up and is now following Lexus' blueprint for success.
everything on papers and paid promotional ,
Jd Power is purchased Valor. It's meaningless.
@@JeromePJr is that true? why isn't other companies such as GM or BMW purchase such promotion then? is Hyundai just paying more or what? is Toyota paying them the best then?
JD Power is an Automotive PR firm. Their ratings reflect what the manufacturer pays them.
@@domdrty So Toyota was paying them for a generation to say they were the highest quality vehicle, but GM and Ford couldn't or wouldn't? Now Hyundai can outspend the most valuable car maker, Toyota? Really? Whatever helps you sleep at night....
The Japanese are watching their side glass as Genesis is passing them while up ahead the Germans are nervously looking at their rear view mirror wondering what is gaining on them. Market competition is a good thing.
And American car manufacturers are still sitting in the garage for their cars to get fixed 😉
No TAO V8, they can keep the Turbo POS, I'll find a nice 2018-2019 V8 Ultimate for half the money and it will last twice as long.
@@mike5559
I agree, the used market for a Genesis is compelling. Even a standard NA V6 is a hell of a deal. Have at it and good luck.

That light was designed just for you, Alex!
Another sales person got their $50.

Genesis G80/G90. Palisade. Hyundai is killing it. Fantastic value for your money and looks stunning.
Alex, you are by far my favorite car reviewer on TH-cam!!! The level of detail in your reviews is second to none. Keep up the good work!
Absolutely gorgeous!!!
you prolly dont care but does someone know of a method to log back into an instagram account..?
I somehow lost my account password. I appreciate any tips you can give me

My wife & I own a 2018 G80 Sport and will definitely be upgrading. We also had a G70 2.0T as loaner recently and that thing blew me away! VERY fun car to drive!
Aside from that front end. That's one of the best looking sedans I've ever seen. It appears to be quite a good value too.
What?? The front end is the best part!
@@diceflawless9115 I respect your taste but I find big grilles obnoxious, vulgar and tacky, not sporty and not luxurious.

@@diceflawless9115 no, I don't. Older ones, yes. Personal taste.
Genesis is the best luxury brand atm no doubt
It’s still too young to carry the same weight and perception as German cars do.
If a customer pulled up in a Mercedes
That customer will be immediately treated better than a customer who pulls up in a genesis.
supershroom164 You don’t know that and there is no official way to test for that, your assumption is all subjective
Byron Nasem I guess I have to specify for you. “Genesis is the best luxury brand atm IN MY OPINION no doubt” 😉
@@supershroom164 Perception my friend, perception. There is no way to test that, besides, it has nothing to do with one car being better than the other in terms of value for money and overall user satisfaction.
Lcsighte ken
there are so many things in life that you technically cannot test.
But it doesn’t automatically invalidate claims.
Anyway, I didn’t say German cars are better cars.
I said people still perceive German cars with success and panache. (subconsciously or consciously)
But, they do not for the Genesis.
Genesis is clearly going after Mercedes and BMW, not Lexus
Or really, they are going after everybody
They are offering similar drivetrains and sizes as the Germans, with the value proposition of a Lexus
Better looking, more powerful, more features and less expensive? Sign me up, Bud!
Well this specific car is going after the Audi A7
Lexus used to be a value proposition. Those days are long gone my friend. This is a very nice vehicle though. I am a fan.
@@joecool9739 this isn't a sport back. Its not on edge tech wise. It's not going for the a7 and that's also no comparison.
@@joecool9739 The A7 is a hatchback, and this is not.
This is a sedan going after the 5-series and E-Class. And it's better than them. The only question is when do you realize it?
It’s engines are still not at the Germans level, but ok. I’d wait until we know what depreciation is before I’d get too excited.
I would totally have believed that this was the new e-class. It's got the elegance E-class have lost
Because it looks like the 2nd gen CLS
The E class is too busy getting the same lights as an A class. 🤦♂️
Wow genesis is just crushing it lately. I had my heart set on the new TLX but this looks so damn nice.
I remember 15 years ago everybody made fun of cheap, plastic Korean cars. Look at them now.
Cheap is what made them popular
I still make fun of them. Have you been in a Kia or Hyundai dealership?
@@DoctorSkillz why`?
@@NisuUuno It's a subpar experience.
@@DoctorSkillz you are there to buy a car, not to eat snacks or drink coffee :D
Killing it! I will be eagerly waiting for 2-3 year old examples of this for my next car.
“That was a risk” 😂 yes, yes it was.
"Oh look, there's LED lighting in here!" Made me spit out my drink. LOLOL
Simply stunning. Gorgeous exterior and interior. I'd easily take this over the cold 5 Series and E Class. I also love the red turn signals and the invisible sensor plate upfront that doesn't create a system that takes away visibility in the cabin like Volvo/Greely system. Genesis nailed it. Shame you couldn't drive it for registration reasons.
For me, separated red turn signals are slick; over the brake-same reds and under amber.
Alex you always do an amazing job, despite not being able to drive the vehicle in this instance. Thank you!!
Holy Cow I didn't expect this! Good job!
Just for comparison, my BMW 540i has a sticker price of $67k (which is basically the most G80 can go), it doesn't have any autonomous active safety features, not even ACC.. This is definitely the car I will look into when I return my current BMW lease.
Bmw and German cars in general are excellent at making you pay for options that should be standard.
Yeah, I would stop that lease at the end of the 1st term to be honest, actually it's smarter to do that anyway with german cars as the depreciate so damn fast.
@@taki4707 That's exactly why lease (not buy) a BMW. They inflate residuals so the depreciation isn't your problem. In all means it's a wonderful machine at a great price.
My 19’ GS 350 Fsport AWD has a sticker price of 72K and doesn’t even have half the stuff this genesis has.
@RpM_Evan The X7 is quite a nice car. Ive been eyeing up my neighbors X7 M50I but I still think im going to buy an Audi Q8 Prestige to replace my 15' Lexus LX.
Yeah, it must be Christmas. 2 video's in one day! And on the 2 cars, I was waiting for!
I think the Hyundai group has really stepped up with their design and interior looks and quality.
Even the Hyundai Sante Fe look gorgeous. It was good looking that I could easily think it is a BMW X3 or Mercedes GLB.
Now if only Genesis would get their act together with offering stand alone dealerships separate from Hyundai showrooms that would be the nail in the coffin for other luxury brands!
The dealership that I take my Genesis G70 to for schedule maintenance, has separate building.
Also one lot has only Genesis vehicles, the only Hyundai and used vehicles.
Since I'm not a brand snob, I don't have a problem going to a Hyundai dealership for service.
A caramel latte is not worth an extra ten thousand dollars added on to the price of a vehicle.
Also make their cars have amber turn signals instead
Tulsa gettin' one
12:11 is an example of thorough coverage we expect from Alex on Autos
Genesis key fob is just the right size, good quality feel and doesn't look cheap. I think it's better than even Lexus' key fob. I would consider a Genesis over a Lexus based on value of the Genesis and the fact that I really can't stand the huge gaping Lexus grill.
It has smaaaaaht paaaaaahk!!! Genesis/Hyundai/Kia out here coming for everybody in the last few years!!!! Great looking vehicle here!!!
That description of how the front fender and hood (bonnet....I am in Australia!!!) join is just one reason I enjoy your reviews. Keep up that technical detail please. Oh....fantastic car! Go Koreans!
Alex, I hope Lexus/Toyota is noting the generous head and leg room Hyundai/Genesis is offering here. BTW that Lexicon sound system ought to be really helpful with language lessons.
Lexus has given up on this segment. The GS is finished, and the torch bearer from now on will be the Camry... I mean the ES.
If I wanted a FWD Camry, then I'd buy a normal Camry for half the price. But even then, I'd rather take the Sonata.
I don't care what Lexus does anymore. Genesis has stolen me as a customer.
I know you're making a joke, but Lexicon has been around for decades, they do high end audio. I have a digital processor made by Lexicon for my home theatre that I bought in the 90s, still in use today for Dolby Digital and DTS surround decoding. It's owned by Harman International (Harman Kardon), recently bought by Samsung.
@@AllyMcLesbian Toyota is still making a Crown (which is basically the GS) for Asian markets, they've just determined it isn't worth selling in Europe or the USA because we love SUVs so much.
@@joa8593 You're correct, though the Crown is executed in more Asian traditionalist style, and built more for comfort than sport. Similar idea between the Lexus LS vs. the Century. And for that matter, why the Cressida is no longer sold in the West, whereas it lives on in Japan as the Mark X.
Wow, that's an awesome looking car, especially from the side view.
As a chauffeur (in Australia), if I were going for a mid-sized sedan, the main competitor is the A6. It's advantages: more prestige badge (gets me more work), a better boot/trunk (it really is best in class in the mid-sized category IMHO), and it also has folding rear seats. However, I am seriously considering the GV80.
They are moving much quicker than Japanese luxury brands and are making great vehicles every year can’t wait for an expanded lineup
Alex, Thanks for the overview. Kudos to you for being one of the first in the US to have pre-production models . . . in your driveway no less (Baller move! :)). I’ve been waiting on the arrival of this vehicle as a potential replacement for my 2018 Stinger GT2 (you definitely influenced that purchase). It’s either this car or a Tesla Model S 100D. If the G80 had a sportback and folding rear seats that would likely close the deal for me. I’m a fan of brands that emphasize quality, premium materials and value. I hope you can drive this car soon, I’ve been watching @AsianPetrolhead videos to hold me over, but really need to understand what has changed for these G80 US-spec vehicles. Thanks again.
The second time was a charm, I own a 2020 G80 Sport and it is one of the most underrated luxury sedans EVER made!
These things are HEAD TURNERS!! Watch out Benz, Lexus, & Bimmer!
I just bought a 2020 Hyundai Palisade. It is an incredible vehicle. I would have seriously considered a Genesis but the closest dealer is in Bend Oregon and I live near Medford. Since Genesis split off from Hyundai, they have not kept up with the dealer network.
Was waiting for this, great job Alex. Looking forward to more on this model.
“Oh, There’s also LED lighting in here.” 😂🤣😂
Alex, just a reminder that the S90 discontinued it's T5 since 2020. Therefore it's first engine option is the 316 horsepowerT6. So, the G80s 2.5 turbo is still less HP than the current base engine option for the S90. Look forward to the comparison review. Nice job.
I really, REALLY hope the Genesis brand can sustain itself long enough to become a big competitor with significant market share to 1) prove how unaware & inept the naysaying consumers are about Hyundai (and Kia)’s serious revamp in the last decades or so & 2) because the brand’s unique aesthetics & “USPs” are such a power-packed value. - Great segment as always, Alex! 🔥
Excellent review; you're the only reviewer who bothers to sit in the back seat's three positions to get a sense of the space. No other reviewer in any other car review does that.
I love the vehicles Genesis is producing. They are the brand to watch in the upcoming years!
I’m excited to see the redesign of the Lexus RX 350 vs the GV80. But the GV80 is on another level!
I need a Genesis with an electric drivetrain in my life. Come on Genesis, join the electric bandwagon.
🙄
There have been a lot of spy shots in Korea of an electrified G80, apparently a full EV, not a plug-in. Additionally, there've been trademarks filed for "e" models of every Genesis nameplate so far (i.e., eG80, eG70, eGV80, eG90, etc.) I agree, though; a full EV version of this car will be an absolute dream.
My favourite genesis

Genesis just keeps hitting them out of the park.. First then G70 3.3T then the GV80 3.5T then the G80 refresh and pending GV70. Acura better watch out as there market share with the RDX/MDX will be taking a hit.
This car is gorgeous. It takes everything that makes the new Sonata sexy, loses everything that makes it goofy, and builds on it with really classy design elements leaving a distinctly upmarket looking finished product. Lexus hasn't been able to pull off something like this for the last 15 years.
Genesis: Enters midsize RWD luxury sedan segment giving 100% effort with a great competitor to the Germans
Lexus: Discontinues GS

People still buy the BMW and Mercedes because of the name, look what I drive to the world, hahahahaha. Let me drop some facts , NOBODY pays attention to that anymore, those vehicles are EVERYWHERE! Genesis on the other hand, STANDS OUT and gets a lot more stares and questions than those German brands do. Plus bonus, you save a lot of money, get all the comforts and styling of a much more expensive luxury vehicle, and the BEST warranty in the business.
Your observations are actually spot on. Mercedes and BMW have realized that they must expand their offerings below the minimum of 45k and to expand their age demographic in the hopes of customer retention. Since these are fairly correlated, they started with the CLA, and BMW then started introducing the X1/2/3, as well as the series 1 and 2. Long story short, Genesis is really going after the Europeans like there's no tomorrow, and I'm one of those people. I have a 2018 Volvo S90 and I would seriously consider a G80, although it seems the back seat amenities on the GV80 is more attractive, I just really prefer sedans. The design, comfort, technology, (not sure about suspension performance, so we'll wait for that), engine performance (probably brilliant, and we don't even have ECU flashes for it, yet!), and the warranty/build quality is really a no-brainer.
They are EVERYWHERE BECAUSE people still pay attention to it bro.
If anything, the fact that more people have German cars means they care more than ever.
Sorry, but people do admire EXPENSIVE CARS, and they do give the owner a certain panache. Or respect that cheap cars don't. Trust me when a business, or proprietor sees my Uncle pull up to their establishment, And gets out of his nearly new ROLLS ROYCE, he gets treated much differently than someone who pulled up in a 20 thousand dollar car. I know because I've experienced it when being with him. Its just normal human nature to be impressed by WEALTH.

Well said
I saw ONE G80 in the DC area. I don’t care about badges but like the fact that I’m driving a unique vehicle. I upgraded from an Infiniti M35 AWD and have been very pleased with the purchase.
Beside all that gorgeousness, it's has very long warranty that I don't think the Germans someday will offer.
Very nice review. Thanks.

Beautiful interior.
Made in Korea! Fabulous!!
Steering wheel is fine. I could hold in by the lower sides like I do with my 4 spoke G90.
Definitely a head turner.
I drive a 2020 G80 sport its a great car
Thanks for this awesome preview! On the G80 itself.... hmmm I'm not sure I on board with the new front end design. The rounded lights and diamond tip grill seem less aggressive. I hope this design language doesn't trickle down to the G70.
The G70 refresh is coming out very soon. It does actually have the same grill style as this G80.
That side profile.....wow!
Another home run for Genesis!
What a beautiful vehicle ,, the Genesis is a true star in luxury sedans. Personally I'd rather stab myself in the heart with a rusty screwdriver than buy a new Genesis. Depreciation in these vehicles is astronomical, check that out before even considering buying a new Genesis. Average depreciation is 35 - 38 % in the first year.
About the steering wheel: i kinda like it! It has an old school style to it (and reminds me of the Impala’s). What’s good is the two “holes” at the bottom are just perfect for some easy-going cruising.

10:39 "If you are a taller driver or front passenger, you may want to look at this rather than some of the European options, because the front seat will move farther rearward" - Moving the seat farther back may be pointless if you can't reach the steering wheel and maintain a comfortable and safe driving position. I have found that out on quite a few cars. The key measurement I don't see any reviewer do is the maximum adjusted distance from the pedals to the center of the steering wheel projected on the floor.
Can't understand why Genesis never offer folding rear seats, looking at sedans as a utility car this has always been a deal-breaker for me. All the German brands have that feature...
It's the same with many Lexus and Toyota models too. I am not sure why.
Cause they're designed for power reclining functions on other markets and have to be large enough to accommodate that. That means they're too large to be folded. Same with some other Lexus vehicles like the ES. Sadly, none of them offer the power recline backseats on the US-spec models.
@@gasstation405 I know the Avalon and LS have that. Even IS has reclining rear seats?
Seems like a massive flaw to compromise the NA models when this market is very important for Lexus.
@@connorPiper0 Avalon and IS do not have reclining rear seats. This LS does and its seats do not fold either. The ones on the ES and G80 are electrically controlled and include the lower seatbacks etc. People who want the most rear space don't buy sedans, they buy crossovers.
